In todays episode we look at the origins of the First Day Cover and find out how much a 1d black FDC is worth. We also look at more recent covers and discuss the pro's and cons of collecting them.
The music throughout this video is called "It's the time of year" and was written and performed by "When Rivers Meet". They have kindly given me permission to use it on this video. You can here more from this multi award winning band at whenriversmeet.co.uk/
Interesting, as always!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing
The artwork! The typewritten addresses! The cancellation marks! The paper! I love them.
Thank you for your channel, I find it very interesting. I met you at the stampex in London this year, we had a quick chat. Thank you for the link to Where Rivers Meet, Really enjoyed their music and have ordered a CD
It was nice to meet you, thanks for your comment. So glad you enjoy When Rivers Meet.
Beautiful music!
First time I have seen your video! Very informative. Thank you! I have subscribed to your channel!😊
Thanks for subscribing, glad you enjoyed the video.
excellent postage stamps
What do you do to get rid of creases in FDCs? Weights or ironing?
I would try ironing carefully, with paper or something between the FDC and the iron.
Collect what appeals to you. Be it a country or a theme.
Yes, you are absolutely correct. There are so many areas to collect, there is something for everyone.
The popularity of collecting formats is cyclical. If you're a country specialist, it stands to reason that a FDC would be among the sought after formats.
Very true, and I guess the same thing applies to thematic collections too.
in belgium a FDC is never a card, always an enveloppe. By consequence there is never information on the back (like you mention sometimes happens). A card with information on the back is called a "maximum card" (I speak for Belgium), also containing a stamp & first day stamp. Confusing : a stamp on a stamp (same words). In belgium we use 2 different words (postzegels and stempel).
Interesting, thanks for the information. The cards with information on them are often inside the envelopes too.
One of my collections is of stamps issued on my birthday, so a FDC with the correct date is great to prove that the stamp(s) share a birthday with me. 😁
The big question, though, is which is preferable - addressed or unaddressed FDCs? I guess it's up to you, but to me collecting (modern) unaddressed FDCs is kind of the FDC equivalent of collecting mint stamps.
Yes, tough question, they certainly look cleaner and neater, but it does mean they haven't been through the postal system. Much like CTO stamps, which I like the look of but cannot really be classed as used.
I have a collection of more than 500 first day covers.
What is your favourite one?
THE ANSWER IS " YES " BTW, FIRST DAY COVERS ARE THE BEST FOR COLLECTING...THEY ARE RARE, UNIQUE AND SOMETIMES VERY VERY PRECIOUS...I KNOW SOME COLLECTORS, WHO JUST COLLECT FDC'S AND SPECIAL DAY ENVELOPES, COVERS APART FROM THE STAMPS...
Thanks for your comments, and yes i agree with you
What I need to know is are those addresses legit on the covers
