Been living in NYC for 12 years. Became a software developer after years of hearing the hype and meeting people who had managed to get themselves out of dead end jobs. Overall it was a great decision but still a long way to go before I can get to a level where I am making "New York money". People should be aware that even a salary of say 120k per year i not enough if you plan to live on your own in a nice modern apartment and have a good lifestyle here. You gotta be pushing close to 200k per year here to have all that stuff that is often shown in these vids so aim high and don't sell yourself short. Still working on projects and building up my portfolio, hoping to start job hunting in a few months. Was born and raised in NYC, but moved to florida after graduating with a non CS degree . I've been scouting the tech scene here for a while now, and there are very little opportunities out here. Also the companies out here dont really catch my interests. Its hard to even find people with a common interest out here, being able to meet up with people here in hackathons or conventions are few and far between. Just a few weeks ago i was looking at coding meetups, and I could find 20 scheduled events in NYC before I could even find one in FL.
I remember back in highschool where I had friends doing programming, and they were able to go to so many events and just meet and interact with people. My goal is to move back to NYC, but only if I can land a SWE job. I have to come back to the city with a better lifestyle than when I came out. I love NYC, but its one place I dont not want to struggle living in again. I have no interest moving to the westcoast at all 😵‍💫

I moved to NYC when I was 18 years old, over 12 years ago now. No money, homeless for two years. Lots of odd jobs. Then Turned 23, got access to a program that led to a tech role internship at American Express. Then immediately after that, got hired by a startup tech company with a huge pay bump. Now I am Data Analyst making a lot of money, my own apartment, traveling. New York gave me so much access to resources that led to big opportunities. So I get what you are saying. I believe every word you are saying.

I think theres a big step we take as individual contributors, when we stop focusing less on "how" we do things more so on communicating "why" we do things. Even with a very messy portfolio, it's often the ability to clearly and succinctly define our driving work principles that hiring managers care about.
Higher new hire upside then someone with a perfect portfolio 👍

Hey man, I’m going to university to go into computing, hopefully I’ll get to move to nyc in a few years. From your experience what route of computing should I go down to make the best money/ best experience

I'll be graduating from the Uni in few months. I'd say try to explore as much as you can, in computing if you're good, no matter what you're doing, you'll be paid good. The real question is what would you like to do? Only you can figure out the answer to it. Go to hackathons, meet-ups, make personal projects, contribute to open source, you're good to go, all the best mate.

I lived 24 years in NYC and 6 in NJ and had enough of both and moved to Atlanta suburbs working 100% remote for a NYC based company. I’m now at a point where I’m not really interested in advancing my technical career but rather switching gears into becoming a successful day trader and investor. One thing the pandemic taught me was you can’t count on a company when shit hits the fan and it’s everybody for themselves. So I’m done with the rate race.

I lived in NYC most of my life and found it is the best city in the whole world. The world comes to NYC. I absolutely agree it is the best place to meet people and find different career opportunities. I believe I’ve had great success as a freelance designer because I am based here. Much luck to you.
