Thanks to my friend, Pastor Jeremy! An extremely important message today. 18:2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding another, but only in expressing personal (usually biased) opinion." One method to limiting our bias and becoming "wiser" is to SEEK OUT and truly seek to understand differing opinions on a subject. Ask clarifying questions instead of stating your own narrow opinions. I know personally that the conversation goes better and that I usually adjust my opinion when I do this. A great exercise to try is to 1. Seek out a friend who you know has a differing opinion on something ( not a HOT topic for your first time at this) 2. ACTIVELY listen - DO NOT formulate your own response while they are speaking. Ask clarifying questions so you don't misunderstand them. 3. Thank them. 4. Move on to another topic WITHOUT responding. 5. Later, run their comments and points back through your mind and see if you decide to adjust your opinion of the subject. Once you feel that you have a good grasp on this process, you may return to stating your own opinion TACTFULLY in response - NO inflaming words like politicians use. I know that when I really focus on active listening, and I don't always :-( , I learn and I usually do soften my stance. Active listening also builds relationships with others because you are showing respect to them even if you still don't agree. Lovin' the Journey!
