Easter Island fire ravages famous Moai statues, causing “irreparable” damage

- Wildfires over the past week has caused "irreparable" damage to Rapa Nui, Chile’s (Easter Island) megalithic and sacred Moai statues, charring some of the iconic stone heads beyond repair.
“The damage is unquantifiable, unmeasurable. It is also unrecoverable because the fire warms the stone, and the stone cracks. Our scientists, along with the park’s administration, will have to go to the island to make the corresponding analysis and see how big the damage is and what we’ll have to do in the future. I do not know if there is a solution for this,” Rapa Nui Mayor Pedro Edmunds Paoa said.
After the fire broke out on Monday, the flames raged through Rapa Nui national park, 3,500 km off the coast of Chile.
More than 100 hectares of land in the Rano Raraku sector was reportedly affected by the fire, including where the Moai statues reside.

Grass fire's are fast, especially when going uphill and pushed by wind's and die out just as fast as they started.
That's why there is still green grass at the base's and most likely they'd sustain superficial damage depending on how porous the stone's used.
Cement tends to pop and explode as it traps water inside and it becomes steam as it is heated.
If people really cared the place wouldn't be left to rot in the first place!

I can't see how a grass fire could cause the stone to get hot enough to crack. It seems to me there wouldn't be enough fuel to do that.

or other artifacts less resistant to fire, or support structures for the statues were made out of wood

What doesn't make sense is the grass directly around the statues isn't burned. You can see where they did an intentional controlled burn NEAR the damaged statues just to make it look like something. The grass around them isn't touched. And a grass fire wouldn't effect just the top of the statues. The grass is 6" high and the only damage is 8 feet in the air. Not to mention that the heat is no where high enough to cause this much damage. This was intentional and someone is covering it up

How is a grass fire damaging statues that are thousands of years old. I’m guessing that they have survived dozens of grass fires if not hundreds over that time. There are no trees to burn, and the Moai will be there for a long time to come.
*Hundreds of years, not thousands. Plus, climate change has been shifting environmental patterns for decades; maybe they never had many fires, if any. Besides which, a) there were people living there that could have combated the fires hundreds of years ago, but the scientist speaking now mentioned that the government isn't doing much to help preservation, and b) it appears after investigation that the fire was started intentionally.
More sadly, it's unlikely the Moai statues "will be there for a long time to come" if they continue to be neglected and wind/heavy rain continues to weather them down :(

How can the stones burn but grass, flowers and shrubs are still green around the stones. It looks more like a mud or intrusion of hot materials coming up from underneath. The main bodies of the Moai are still 90% underground, they would heat up from underneath first.
Ever see a Fire Ring with Lava Rocks? They don't melt. Melting point is close to the Original Lava State of close to 11,000- 12,000 degrees fahrenheit. That is NOT a low land grass fire.
I'm thinking maybe the grass was hoed up to keep the flames away? Maybe a last minute preventative.

However, your assumption that I don’t know something and am following blindly ( my interpretation of your assessment of me) You are correct in that I don’t know everything and nor have I made such a claim. Nor will I ever because, like you said, learning is imperative and far too many people choose not to educate themselves. The path of least resistance I suspect but I digress.
I have seen various different media from different outlets and different “fires”. Like yourself, I don’t claim to be an expert but I can clearly see something that doesn’t make sense to me and probably most who give a damn about what’s being presented as fact. Which seldomly is the case nowadays.
The statues are made of stone. Stone doesn't burn.
Nobody ever said the stones were burned, but the heat could cause the stones to crack as stated in the video.

Well I cannot believe that hasn't happened before because those statues have been there for several thousand years - I am sure they will be OK in the future.
Not to take away from the tragedy of the situation, but I think it's more like several hundred years. The Rapa Nui didn't landsettle there until sometime between 400 and 1000 ad. They didn't start erecting the Moai until around 1400ad and stopped shortly before European contact. Then the natives started tearing most of them down. It's not on the level of the pyramids being destroyed or something, but still quite tragic.

Considering the Moai are thought to be between 750-500 years old, it seems they've survived periodic fires on the island, by natural or human causes. Attempting to preserve them from natural events is a fool's errand-certainly, protecting them from wanton vandalism/destruction by humans is a noble effort, but humans overall are stupid petty animals¹.
¹ I'm reminded of the destruction of the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan-the _Buddhas of Bamyan_ thought to have been carved into a northern cliff face over looking the Bamyan Valley c. 570-619 CE-wantonly destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.

These were not wild fires. They were on purpose fires. I don't know the reasoning behind the fires, but I can think of several different scenarios that would explain the fires.

Ummm...how does a nearly golf course like grass fire heat up stone sufficiently to cause any notable damage??? What kind of grasses do they have over there? When we have grass fires in the prairies, we are talking 4-6 foot grasses and bushes that burn at about 20km/h for no more than 15 minutes in a place...it's hot no doubt, but we have A LOT more grasses and substantial foliage.

It is literally impossible to have ANY kind of land fire and it ever be hot enough to melt rock. Period.
As someone who studies rocks and geology, this is an extremely questionable “rock” in my per view if it melts away because of land fire.
All stones on earth are either made under massive pressure or intense heat or both and with both of these cases the pressure that is achieved by the earth alone to make a stone will always leave the stone capable of withstanding low temperature forest or land fires because of it own thermal resistance.
lets say even if it weren’t subjected to molten flow, just the pressure alone that is required to make an actual stone in the earth is already higher in temperature do to energy of force than that of a normal land or forest fire.
And it’s pretty common knowledge that rocks that have already reached a certain temperature in its formation are thermally resistant to temperatures lower than what was required to create the rock in the first place.
