I noticed this, too! His singing range is pretty high, but in this interview, you hear him falling into a sort of male ‘vocal fry’-a kind of lowest-energy bass register.
The way he asked the rhetorical question about suntan lotion made him look like he was interpersonally debating the intricacies of life and the universe.
I have to disagree with some of the earlier comments. I didn't get the impression that they were being pretentious/hipsters. Regarding the yoga response: they're not hating on commoditization of yoga for the sake of being hipsters. They're just stating a fact--yoga has become a commodity. Yoga originated thousands of years ago as a spiritual practice as part of a lifestyle that was supposed to align body and mind, etc. Nowadays it is literally a branded product: Bikram Yoga, for example, is quite aggressive about enforcing its copyrights and trademarks. Nothing wrong with that, of course. Making money is awesome! but yoga has changed ("diluted" in this case), and VW is correct to point that out as part of their answer. Regarding everything else: non-branded Munchkins, existential crises over the meaning of suntan lotion...I see that as the guys trying to be precise about their responses, not being pretentious. Such a fun interview :D
I dont know if its just me, but I dont see how they were being pretentious at all. They were just having a conversation and I dont see why some viewers are getting aggravated at them for doing so.
"Along with the more lived-in sonics, Modern Vampires has the band taking a leap forward into emotional directness. Koenig and Batmanglij truly seem of one mind here, as the vocals and music interact with each other in an effortless flow. While skronks and snares pop on "Diane Young", the singer matches the live-fast intensity hit-for-hit. The song is a dissection of the 27 Club rock'n'roll myth, where Koenig's voice on the sly "baby, baby, baby" bridge is manipulated to intoxicating effect."
I don't think they were being pretentious at all. I mean, come on they went to university, and not any old one. An ivy league one. So they are intelligent.
I gotta be honest with ya, that's some terrible deductive reasoning. Don't get me wrong though, they are indeed intelligent (not because of the prestige you get from being a Lion) and I admire them. But at the same time, you don't really have to be smart to go to an Ivy League school (trust me, I know how college admission works... after months of researching and ended up applying to 21 colleges. Also, as an international student living in the U.S., I had to do more research on information regarding financial aid because it's complicated for low-income internationals living in America). As long as you have strong work ethics (which I actually think is more valuable than just being smart), Ivy Leagues aren't impossible (besides, if you're going to an Ivy League just for its name value, I don't even know what to tell you. You don't go to college to get a job, you go to college to pursue your academic interests and perhaps discover new fields). What about Will Butler (Northwestern)? Victoria Legrand (Vassar)? Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser (Wesleyan)? Yannis Philippakis and Edwin Congreave (Oxford)? There are so many intelligent musicians (including Vampire Weekend) who don't need the prestige of their colleges to prove their intelligence.
You're right, we shouldn't enjoy anything related to Bill Cosby. His character is tainted, therefore all of his work should be shunned and not talked about, even though it is a part of 90s kid's childhoods.
They're smart as fuck which is partly why they may come off as "douchey". I find it refreshing. There are far too many times when intellectuality is condemned and unintelligent demeanor paves its way into cool. Vampire Weekend discourse and keeps me on my feet - always nice too have.
Yeah, they're just laughing at the pointlessness of his statement. It added nothing to the discussion, it's just something he was pointing out, which made it hilarious.
"The Cosby Show"
Everyone instantly checks the date of the video was published.
Wow you nailed it for me
Yep
Thank u bill Cosby for being the worst and ruining everything
hahahaha exactly what i did. check the date. check the comments.
LOL
Ezra's voice is so funny. It's a mix between aristocratic, surfer dude, and extremely nervous.

Ezra's laugh is so adorable and so is his face when he's eating. Ezra is just a wonderful person in general.
+Par Ker I'm broke, sorry but I do like ur profile pic

1:09 The moment when Rostam knew he was going to leave the band.
Too soon

Rostam is so adorable.
I'm always horrified by the drawing in the end of these videos

I'm more surprised that they. Agreed to go to this, seeing the whole pitchfork beef.
(CinemaSins voice) Make Ezra eat an apple to seem even more detached and edgy
@@daishoryujin95 what beef?
They seem cool. Thanks PitchforkTv for making me accept Vamire Weekend into my heart.

I dont know if its just me, but I dont see how they were being pretentious at all. They were just having a conversation and I dont see why some viewers are getting aggravated at them for doing so.
(Ik I'm 4 years late but people say this about Ezra today and it's not true at all)

I don't think they were being pretentious at all. I mean, come on they went to university, and not any old one. An ivy league one. So they are intelligent.
You can be pretentious and intelligent, lol.

HoJun Yu yeah you're right actually. I need to re edit my comment.
they dress a bit hip, but they seem alright. they didn't seem like they were bursting of knowledge, and i also didn't think they were pretentious.
bill cosby. yikes.
You're right, we shouldn't enjoy anything related to Bill Cosby. His character is tainted, therefore all of his work should be shunned and not talked about, even though it is a part of 90s kid's childhoods.

Crocs: "if you're European artist that doesn't give a fuck"
hahaha
Love this
if they do another over/under during their press tour for lp4 and it's without rostam then i no longer wish to live on this plane of existence
I fail to see how they're pretentious or "hipster"
+Galaxy Because the people calling them that have never used words that are more than 5 letters, or hard to pronounce.
nerd
that was directed at micah but fuck u too buddy
***** How is that nerdy? LOL. I prefer intellectual.
just cause ya don't use "hard to pronounce big words" doesn't mean yer not smart

Does anyone know the song that plays at the end?
GuiRomGon "Diane Young" from their album Modern Vampires of the City.
Thanks a ton man, cool song!
+GuiRomGon you got problems.
+gabelogan56 ???
GuiRomGon good call, Gui. I was just being a drunken jackass about the fact you were watching a video with VW and didn't know the tune. My bad.
Vampire Weekies

Ezra's shirt either says Brooks Brothers or Jonas Brothers and I just don't know...
finger's crossed it's Jonas Brothers...
I thought it looked like Modern Vampires of The City merch
2019 is a good year for both vw and jb i'd say
Where did Rostams solo over/under go?! I can’t find it anywhere
Help: What are Entemanns (sp?)
It's like a brand that sells stuff like doughnuts and that sorta jazz lol and it's Entenmann's
Snack food. Donuts and stuff.
baio and ezra have quite similar voices
What happened to Rostam’s solo over / under? Why’d it get taken down?
I felt so much better about myself when Ezra asked what the heck suntan lotion was
What is Ezra doing with his mouth when they talk about Doughnut Holes?
eating...
Thanks :)
omg what a dork with his apple lolzzz
"the entenmann's version was called 'pop ems'"
Can someone explain to me what was going on at 1:22?
i could watch that all fucking day. and what i mean to say is; more of that.
Hmm, I haven't read many of Pitchfork's reviews, but I found the one for Vampie Weekend's most recent album quite well written, js.
They're smart as fuck which is partly why they may come off as "douchey". I find it refreshing. There are far too many times when intellectuality is condemned and unintelligent demeanor paves its way into cool. Vampire Weekend discourse and keeps me on my feet - always nice too have.
Right on man, blind hate rules
As a fellow Canadian, I had no idea a timbit was called a doughnut hole.
WHAT IS SUNTAN LOTION
This is funny!
Is Ezra wearing a shirt with Brooks Brothers screen printed across it?
This ages like milk with the Cosby show.
yes
JAJAJAJA OMG!! this is so funny i cant
Overrated + Underrated ≠ over/under
Overrated + Underrated = rated/rated
Try that on for a series.
New album plz
Tim Horton's Timbits, LOOK THAT SHIT UP
I know haha. It was that and the kind of snarky intelligence in their responses.
What I read, "OH NO MY FAVORITE BAND GOT POPULAR"
cool dudes
What did Baio do to his hair?! STAHP!
"what is suntan lotion?"
ezra asks the important questions
loosen up francis!
chris baio though
im guessing they were just laughing at the name "pop em's." there's not really a hidden meaning or inside joke that you're missing haha.
Yeah, they're just laughing at the pointlessness of his statement. It added nothing to the discussion, it's just something he was pointing out, which made it hilarious.
