Atkins: "We should all be open-minded. The only thing we can believe is evidence" Atkins: "No amount of evidence would convince me to rescind my position."
@@maninthecosmos5379 : Open-minded is being open to listening with respect to various views and then a readiness to accept whichever view seems to be true and most plausible. Being gullible is lapping in everything without any discernment. A big difference - not a thin line!
Late, I know, but I'd like to add that we should never be afraid to follow the evidence as christians. It is probably the best way we have to find truth, and the scripture encourages us to seek truth.
John Lennox seems to be in possession of a wisdom, calmness, light and inner peace wich Peter Atkins simply doesn't have. You can tell in the first minute of the video...
@@derhafi who seems delusional, the man constantly insulting beliefs of another human or the man sitting and listening? Atkins is extremely offended by what, a God thats not real? Saying we humans know more than a God, than THE God. Just by definition thats non sequitur B.S. and almost rhetorical
@@dr.zoidberg5096Atkins is quite right not to accept that people can drone on claiming something without any evidence and expect it to be treated as intelligent discussion just because it is cloaked in religion. He is right to make no exaptation for religion in that regard, he is right to treat it with contempt and to point out that it produces far more evil than good. I have no respect for Lennox's views and I don't care whether he comes across as more avuncular as that is irrelevant. I thought Atkins said what needed to be said about science and reality and I have no problem with him being dismissive of Lennox and his fantasies about non-existent beings. Delusion: characterized by or holding idiosyncratic beliefs or impressions that are contradicted by reality or rational argument. There is not a trace of solid, repeatable, unambiguous empirical evidence supporting a correlation of any God and reality, let alone the one God, Lennox happens to believe in. As there are no flawed arguments which hold up against scrutiny in favour of any divine being. Lennox is per definition delusional.
@@derhafi well. I can state simply and clearly that your wrong. Evidence comes in many forms, whether you accept it or not doesn't change reality. Logical thinking would lead us to two conclusions about Jesus, eaither He was on the same level as a man saying hes a literal chicken with feathers OR He was telling the truth. No historian accepts the body as being stolen, or mass hallucination or any theory, quite the opposite, they say that evidence for the resurrection is quite compelling. No to mention geological locations discovered or the fact that the Israelites are an actual people. Also prophecy is being fulfilled to this day! In 1948 Israel became a sovriegn nation and that was foretold in the bible. But you probably would dismiss all the evidence i gave lol Also, why would peter be so insulting to someone so calm unless he looked down on John? Atheist always have this out look of people tolerating then but they tolerate no one! Atheist are literal walking arrogance. Claiming to know better than God while at the same time saying they cant even answer all questions? They put themselves in Gods lap and then slap Him in the face.

You can listen, respect, receive, reason, have open body language, be polite, compliment, have an open mind, display humility -- and still be very wrong. None of those things vouch for the veracity of what you claim. None of the opposites of any of that indicates that who have lacks those things is wrong. It merely means that the person doesn't listen, is disrespectful, doesn't reason (at least not then), has closed body language, is impolite, does not compliment, has a closed mind and is not humble -- all of which is actually compatible with being right.
@@danhanqvist4237 Having closed body language, being impolite, having a closed mind and not being humble mean the absolute opposite of being right. It shows lack of confidence like trying to protect your own dignity from being hurt, show dissapointment and bitterness. Nothing to do with being right
@@katsaras1 No it doesn't. Being right or wrong is exclusively a matter of the quality of your arguments (whatever the Woke Brigade thinks). All those things may indicate uncertainty, for instance, but that does not impact the quality of the arguments. Being right or wrong is not a matter of sentiment.
You like John Lennox because he says everything you want to hear, you want to believe in a god and Lennox confirms to your satisfaction that there is a god, he doesn't, but he convinces you that he does. If you had any critical thinking left you would see that Lennox talks nonsense.
@@davinjohnson1110 Patience? he's talking nonsense, he listens then he talks nonsense. He tries to appear quiet and calm because he knows that works with believers because they don't actually listen to what he's saying. He talks as if everything he is saying is true but has no way of showing that any of it is true. There are no gods, there is no heaven, there was no resurrection because no one has ever come back from the dead. You want to believe it's all true but there has never been any evidence that any of it is. That's why what you believe is called a "FAITH".
Yes, because I believe in Jesus. Makes it far more better than listening to an immature brat who forces his point and interrupts all the time and talks rubbish 🗑.
@@davinjohnson1110 His 'patience' is there because he knows exactly what believers want to hear, they are waiting for him to speak no matter how long they have to wait, and he knows this, what you are seeing is not patience, it's confidence based on past experience, he has been doing this for a long long time and he knows he will get a mental standing ovation from every believer.
Truth Speaks he’s a reasonable fellow. The facts that his reasonably high standards makes people cower into the “christian” camp, is rather sad. And disappointing.
@@masongalioth4110 He claimed at about 59:40 during this discussion that it would be impossible for any evidence to convince him, which shows that he's not reasonable. He's not open to evidence.
I wonder if by "evidence" Atkins means tangible proof? There are things that are not tangible like the number 1 or 2 and so on. They exist only as constructs perceived within the mind yet are objectively real; immutable and imperishable. I suspect they were there even before the universe came into being. Every number has a basic property and a method. These are the attributes. Then how difficult is it to regard the Absolute Truth (God) similarly. The question is not evidence because the evidence is plain to see and irrefutable in the same way one can't deny the existence of the number "1" for a lack of evidential proof. If that makes sense.
@@muddypool7537 We have evidence that people have thoughts and ideas but we can't touch thoughts/ideas. They are not tangible but often represent things that are. God is not tangible but has given us many things that are.
This debate was so rich and powerful! It is truly noticeable how Jesus has fulfilled Mr. Lennox' heart with kindness, calmness and love towards those he's debating with. I just absolutely loved the way he presented the gospel and how significant, relevant and factual it is in the lives of those who proclaim it. God bless this man!
"Factual"... interesting way of putting it. Only because a person debates in a kindly manner, smiles, is friendly or even generous does not make them automatically correct in their assertions. It is preposterous to state that Jesus made John Lennox the debater he is.
@@Eudaimonia88 I agree with you overall, that Jesus did not make Dr. Lennox the debater he is because Jesus doesn't know him. But, Jesus' teachings Lennox does know and uses them very accurately. It's much like having a book on how to build a house, the person has all the information to make it happen, but neither it's writer, influencer nor inspirer know the house builder. However, Dr. Lennox, as well as many other Masters, PHDs and even double PHDs who have come to believe in God and creation, actually DO leave the other side (Dawkins, Hitchings, Atkins, etc., etc., etc) looking overall like a child in a grown mans discussion. How and why? Because the evidence, all of it, points to a creator and The Bible is the only book that explains such a creator.
@@markuse3472 You’re spouting petulant and ignorant nonsense but it’s hilarious reading whines about atheists looking like children from those who still need an Imaginary Friend. I don't think I could have engaged Peter's insolence and continued insults nearly as graciously as Mr. Lennox. Through the decades we are occasionally gifted with clear and concise thinkers who can distill cogent meanings from the fog of perpetual discussion. Mr. Lennox is certainly one of them.
I think the belief in atheism produces an empty pointless, angry life - Mr. Peter is the perfect example - because everything is pointless and meaningless anyway…I would be pissed and unhappy too
@elkefontillo3239 an atheist would argue that being atheist makes life indescribably valuable as you only get a single shot and its over. I get your point though, a belief in God and the transcendent is a beautiful thing, you wish others felt it too.

@Jim H Well, it is sad that you don't go further and investigate. Exactly this was predicted and the whole roman catholic church with all it's apostacy had to go this way. But you only understand it when you read the bible. Why do you think the protestantism take place? The crusades? The papacy? Paganism was adopted into roman catholic church. What did Jesus say to the Pharisee? “And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.”(KJV)
The Lord has nothing to do with it. What happens you see, is a mummy and daddy who really love eachother get together and............well you hopefully know the rest. That's how his life came about 🙄
Not so foolish as to sit on his idle duff lazily quoting Bronze Age bigotry. Atkins is one of the most distinguished scientists in the UK. That you think his not sharing your weird faith based beliefs makes him a fool should give you pause to consider momentarily the possibility that you might be a mindless wanker.
Of the debates I’ve watched between a Christian and an atheist, there seems to be a common theme. The Christian tends to be humorous and humble and the atheist tends to be disrespectful, dismissive, and angry. It is an interesting representation of a person with God and a person without God… and how He changes us from the inside out.
Imagine the stupidity of having a world view that nothing created all of us, it means nothing, when we die its exactly as if we never lived, so lets spend all our time angrily trying to convince people that their lives are meaningless too and will essentially UN-LIVE at death where it doesnt matter what you did, what you believed, what you enjoyed or anything at all. Atheism is the most ridiculous and preposterously stupid belief system man king has ever been infected with, its not even close.
Also, the atheist tends to say “nothing could even hypothetically convince me to change my mind”, whereas the Christian says “Hypothetically, yes, but it would have a lot of explaining to do for what I have personally experienced”. Atheists are so reluctant to even entertain the opposing view, as Atkins clearly states-even if he witnessed Jesus dying and being resurrected personally, he would not be convinced. Compare to Lennox saying if credible evidence emerged that early Christians deceived and some other explanation for my personal witnesses of Christ’s power existed, but it doesn’t and Christianity is the way.
@@Movies-ji9gw I think he does. It's a matter of the side you cheer for. Many atheists say that Dawkins isn't arrogant or egotistical, he's just a scientist that says simple truths that offend people. Many Christians call him arrogant. Let's do a thought exercise, can you name any Christian apologist types that are arrogant and egotistical? If you can't, then that might be a case of Rose tinted glasses
A true Christian who understands what Paul means when he wrote 2 Cor 5:18-21 understands that Jesus earthly ministry was to get Israel to see their Messiah and when they rejected him and killed him that during the DB&R a new creation was made and that whosoever believed the message that was given to the only aspistle to the gentiles as well as the jews after the cross are saved through believing what Jesus accomplished with his DBR and the only thing that saves and gives salvation is simply to believe that. When a believer does then God sees the believer through his Son and nothing he does is held against him. Because of this free gift the person is grateful to God and chooses to live the best life he can knowing he can never live up to Gods standards yet he knows that he is a child of God and can never loose his salvation. What I have seen of evangelical Christianity is that they don’t separate Jesus’s earthly purpose from the eternal purpose for anyone who believes what happened with the cross. Note: I have only been saved a few years because all that I ever heard of Christendom seemed to be that all of Jesus life was written to me and that what was written in Matthew was for me yet all who preached and taught that couldn’t make anything in Matthew work for them thus I knew something was wrong with the baptist. Through years of struggle I happened onto hearing a Bible teacher explain the Bible the way it was actually written. What a difference it makes. I learned that it was called the Pauline doctrine and since the cross its always been around however theres never been more than a half to one percent of Christendom that heard or seen or believed it. Sadly its all but extinct in the US.
With all due respect, I'm a hopeful agnostic but that seems like somewhat of a copout. I can totally imagine well organized experiments on out of body experiences or something showing evidence of an afterlife or consciousness being outside the brain, so evidence is very much possible.
@@Pheer777 I seriously recommend you actually read Aquinas before you attempt to refute possibly the smartest man who ever lived. This was not at all intended as a copout, the point of the statement is to state that those without Baptism (this is where the gift of faith is received) will be disorderedly averted to the possibility of proof of the eternal truth, though it is possible to convince them regardless.
@@Pheer777 We are born at wrath with God due to original sin, Baptism removes this blindness. Also, most hardcore Atheists are extremely averted to any sort of proof of God.
@@lyricalmike7162 I'm basically an atheist but believe me when I say I wish I could believe in a god. I guess pure faith is just difficult because once you realise that all personal experience is subject to the fallibility and cognitive biases of the human mind, verifiable evidence becomes somewhat necessary. I can name several things that would prove to me unequivocally that there is a god, but feeling good during prayer is not one of them. There is a part of the brain that when stimulated with transcranial magnets, creates a spiritual feeling. Whether or not that was put there by god to allow humans to feel close to him, or evolved as a mechanism to promote social bonding and harmony is a different question.
@@Pheer777 I never suggested any of that as reasons there are superior metaphysical and philosophical reasons that God exists, anyone can understand them with common sense. What is cannot come from what is not, you cannot give what you do not posses. A plant cannot become a refrigerator, I cannot give you a phone unless I have a phone to give you. Existence works the same way, existence must come from existence, not nothing. You cannot have existence unless something gives you existence, however existence cannot come from nothing. This declared that existence is eternal, that eternal existence is what we call God. There, now you should believe in God, all you needed is common sense, God bless you.

@Psicólogo Miguel Cisneros those are really good questions!! Though I don't know why you are asking me these... Does it relate to what i wrote? In reality i value truth as a very high priority. I love truth! I pursue truth! It moves me deeply when i discover or recognize it. Even when it is difficult or challenging personally. I have found no greater, no other truth than Jesus, His words, God's whole story and plan as related in the Bible. I have experienced the healing power that comes with it, a redeemed life and perpose and being set free from various afflictions. And His truth is still changing me, enabling me to be a part of the new creation. To take my role, to grow into it. "I am the way, the truth and the life." Jesus said. I love truth. I love God.
@Psicólogo Miguel Cisneros you're asking reall good questions!! 😀👍 How do you relate to any person? By talking with them, right? By spending time together, getting to know each other... Jesus aleady knows you in and out, He knows your thoughts, good and bad, He knows your hopes and desires... So it's up to you now to get to know Him 🙂 He is very near you, if you start talking to him, He will draw even nearer. Ask Him all your questions, tell Him tht you want to relate to Him, but don't know how. Ask him to show you! Reading the Bible is priority number one to get to know Jesus, because His words are in it. And these words have power! They will change your heart and thinking for the better 😊👍👍👍 Talking to peoplewho already know Jesus, spending time in fellowship is important and exciting, also for seeing whatJesis does right now! To relate to the historical Jesus who walked this earth 2000 years ago I recommend thenew show"the chosen". Have you seen it?? They have it in different languages
@Psicólogo Miguel Cisneros Feelings do not always equate to truth. Often, feelings can get us into a lot of trouble. I was brought up in an atheistic household. By the age of six I started asking questions about God and was often mocked by my family. My mum actually thought I was ill for even asking. I lived my life thinking there's probably a God but I didn't care. At 30, I had a vision that I was at my dads funeral and I was prompted to preach the gospel of Christ to my dad. I had never read the Bible so I had no idea what the word "gospel" meant and had to google it. I told my dad about my profound experience and we studied the Bible together (I left out the part that I was at his funeral). I started writing in Hebrew, Aramaic and Koine Greek-the three languages that the Bible is originally written in. Again, I had never read the Bible and certainly didn't know anything about the languages. I was guided to learn about Biblical prophecies. Again, I didn't know what prophecy was. I just want to add, that none of this happened to me because I'm more special in God's eyes than you or anybody else but because I had a willing heart and through using me as an instrument, many of my family members now have a relationship with Christ. My dad excepted Jesus Christ's salvation plan for him-the gospel of Christ and he died 3 months later smiling in a coma. There's so many more miracles I can get into that are mindblowing but I cannot prove my testimony to you. God doesn’t say just have faith, He backs it up with evidence. He gives you something to examine and I don't just mean historical evidence and archaeological evidence but through Bible prophecy. More than a quarter of the Bible contains prophecy showing you how important it is to God to give us information about the future. Approximately 70% of Bible prophecy have found fulfillment with 100% accuracy which means the other 30% reserved for the end times have remained unfulfilled and will also be fulfilled with 100% accuracy. No other religion in the world has such confirming evidence to inspire its faith. This is God's way of saying, examine Me so that you can know amongst all these idols and false gods that I am who I say I Am. There are plenty of outside sources for example, the first century historian Josephus. He was not a Christian but he wrote about Jesus and how both during and after His death there were countless eye witness accounts claiming they witnessed this man performing miracles and claiming to see the risen Jesus, which led to a huge conversion to the faith. We have the preserved writings of the first century Pharisees in early Judaism. Remember, they flat out deny Jesus as Son of God and yet they affirm in their writings that this man was doing something supernatural, causing up a stir among the people. Interestingly, they do not apply these supernatural acts to miracles rather something demonic in nature. The Old Testament predicted that the nation of Israel by in large would reject it's King and this is why they refuse to read prophecies such as Isaiah 53, written 700 years before the first coming, death, burial and resurrection of Christ and Psalm 22, written by kind David 1000 years before. They don't read it because it clearly predicts the Messiah coming and being crucified. The crucifixion of Christ predicted 1000 years in advance (Psalm 22:16) is also significant because as capital punishment, the Jew's stoned people to death (Leviticus 24:16); (Numbers 15:35-36). The piercing prophecy is remarkable because history tells us that the Romans would come into the land of Israel and take away from the Jew's the right to execute their own criminals. The Jew's had to turn Jesus over to the Romans after they accused Him of being guilty through their own religious courts (of course Christ was innocent) because of what Rome had done beginning of 63 B.C. It was the Roman's who crucified people. The Romans did not invent the crucifixion, that was the Assyrians. The point is, at the time the prophecy was penned by David 1000 years beforehand and then again by Isaiah and all these other prophets, by saying “piercing” they were anticipating the Roman's coming into Israel and removing the right to execute their own criminals. If a mere man had written that, there's no way a Jew could have foreseen that and it wouldn't have said “piercing,” it would have been written that Christ would die by stoning. The Old Testament predicted a two-part prophecy; a physical and spiritual revival of national Israel; the physical (the land coming back to life after laying as a desolate wasteland for a lengthy period of time until the last days, which it did for nearly 2000 years). The physical revival has been fulfilled but as predicted, the Jew's are back in their land from being scattered amongst the nations and are in rejection of Christ. So, the spiritual revival-the acceptance of their true Messiah who already came is yet to be fulfilled. Many of the events such as specific detailed wars, locations and buildings are verified and more and more is being discovered. For example, the inscriptions on cylinders in the British Museum engraved by the Babylonian king, Nabonidus varifies the same account in the Bible and there are countless artifacts like this and archaeological sites verifying the Biblical accounts. There are three tests. The first is bibliographic, which examines whether the documents we have today are the same as those originally written by the authors. This test considers the quantity of existing manuscripts and the time between the earliest copies and the originals. When people try to mock the Bible as untrustworthy, keep this in mind: there are only 49 copies of Aristotle’s writings in existence and each is at least 1400 years removed from the original. Aristotle for anyone who doesn’t know, is considered to be one of the greatest Greek philosophers. It gets worse: of the writings of Greek philosopher, Plato, there are only 7 copies on the planet and they are 1200 years removed from the original. Contrast that with the Bible, of which we have over 24,000 copies and they’re finding more all the time. The earliest of those is only 25 years removed from the original and even from within the lifetime of the actual authors. Yet people don’t think to question the authenticity of Aristotle or Plato’s writings while they scoff at the Bible. It makes no sense. And the Bible’s preservation story gets better than 25 years. In the same community where the Dead Sea Scrolls, (with their Old Testament copies), were found, just in the last few years they have actually found copies of the New Testament books too. If you use the dates people estimate for the writing of the New Testament manuscripts, based on what they have just found. We now have portions of the Gospel of Mark from within 13 years of being written, portions of Romans from within 11 years, James within 8 years, Acts within 5 years, 1 Timothy within 5 years, and portions of 2 Peter from the exact same year it was estimated to have been written. The New Testament is the most verified document in the history of mankind! When people mock the Bible, its due to their own lack of understanding or their lack of pursuit of Biblical knowledge. What about legend vs historical figure? Women were the key and chief witnesses to testify that they had found the empty tomb of Jesus after He had been buried for three days. The first eyewitness to see Jesus resurrected was a woman. We know according to Jewish custom women were deemed to be unreliable witnesses. If you were a first-century Jew making up this story out of thin air, you would never say that women discovered the tomb. It would damage your case or credibility, not help it. So,why did all four gospel writers record that it was women who discovered the empty tomb? The disciples recorded what actually happened and knowing their truth in Jesus regardless the backlash. The presence of these women is strong evidence of the historical accuracy of their claims and how they were embarrassing to the early church gives us even more reason to think that they are real historical witnesses. Now, what’s interesting is that when you look at this from our twenty first century perspective what was a weak point in the first-century is a strong point from a historical critical understanding of the gospels now. The first century issues of proclaiming the gospels turned out to be more support and strengthening of the historical fact nowadays and this is why 75% of scholars across all broad spectrums affirm the empty tomb. We understand that people do not generally tell stories or lies that hurt their reputation nor would they all be willing to die based on a lie. The more embarrassing it is the more reason you have to think it’s historically accurate. So, if you were in the first-century culture and you wanted to make up a story of Jesus’ tomb being empty, you would never narrative it with women as witnesses to that event. The Bible doesn’t consider women as bad witnesses obviously since the Bible is using them but the first-century culture did. There is a case for Christ. Most people who scoff at the God of the Bible, aren't honestly seeking truth or they don't believe in the first place that truth lies in Christ. It's not sincere in many cases. Christ says seek and you'll find Me.
@@psicologomiguelcisneros He is real. Jesus is real. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever Heb. 13:8. I want to quote Apostle Paul in one of his letters to the Corinthians. 1 Corinthians 2:4-8 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power. If you seek the Lord carnally, then if bounds to fail. Just like the reply of Anna, she experienced the healing power of the Lord which is one of His ministries during His life on earth. And this still exists today because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. That's the reason Apostle Paul demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit. I too, one of my secrets from the occult was revealed by the Lord thru one of His servants as a mouthpiece by the Word of Knowledge (one of the Spiritual Gifts you can read in 1 Corinthians 12), that only the Holy Spirit can reveal so that the walls that blinded me be destroyed. The reason also the Lord reveals Himself supernaturally is because that's who He is. Supernatural beyond human wisdom and knowledge, All-Knowing, the Alpha, and the Omega. Accept Jesus Christ, cry out to Him, and be patient. Just seek Him with all your heart and you will find Him Jeremiah 29:13. He will reveal himself to you. That's what also happened to me, so many questions about Him until He revealed Himself supernaturally destroying the walls of worldly reasoning which is nonsense.

What I find interesting about these debates for example, is the fact that Lennox has specifically quoted others (including scientists and atheists) and he's provided references. Atkins continued to say "suppose," and provide hypotheses' not providing evidence or references to support his arguments. My questions to the scientists and atheists is how do they explain the existence of water, fire, and wind?

If you were a little more perceptive and less overcome with fanboy adulation for Lennox you would have understood that he was actually sneering at Atkins whilst appearing to compliment him. There's nothing wrong with that of course. Debates to a large extent are about point-scoring, they never really arrive at the truth. Lennox is an accomplished performer and Atkins, not so much.
I'd agree with prof Lennox. Our world of experiences doesn't begin with matter and energy, it begins with consciousness. Only after we have consciousness we can contemplate about things like matter and energy, not before.
@@purpleohm1440 No, that would be arguing a non sequitur. The idea that we can have matter and energy without consciousness doesn't necessarily mean that we can have consciousness without matter and/or energy. Good comment. Descartes was wrong. Being is a prerequisite for thought. We meet experiences through being, try to understand them with thought, and from that attempt to understand we create categories like 'matter' and 'energy'.
@@stephenbailey9969 If as you say, being is a prerequisite for thought, then having thoughs proves being. As far as I understood, Descartes merely argued the latter with his "I think therefor I am". The therefor is a reference to proof, not a reference to causation. premise 1 : being is a prerequisite for thinking premise 2 : I think conclusion : I am Not sure why you consider Descartes to be wrong about that, the reasoning seems valid and I see no reason to doubt the premises. Or did you mean that Descartes was wrong about something else?
@@BlacksmithTWD We are not always conscious of 'I', but we 'are'. There is much more to our being than our self consciousness. If as you say, Descartes was attempting to supply a scholar's proof, then in that internally referential pursuit it would be evident that he was accurate. ( His statement is almost a tautology in that respect. Although, I wonder: what is the 'I' that thinks in "I think"? Or is it thinking that creates 'I'. Just shows the inadequacy of words to capture the reality.) If you are speaking about our general experience of life itself, then his statement is lacking.
I was an atheist, a very very adamant and faithful atheist. I know why Atkins believes what he does, i know why he is wrong. If i were to talk to him he would tell me various things: emotional crutch, stupid, whatever else he says in the video. I know what is right by reason logic and evidence. I have moved past that. I have been SAVED for 4 years now.
@user-qg1kb8ih3g I finally stopped running from God and surrendered. We all know the truth. The truth is written on our hearts, and our conscience bears witness to it. But in our unrighteousness, we suppress the truth because we want to live life our way instead of God's way. But God's way is so much better. All the evidence came later. But first, I had to surrender my life to God and submit to the Truth.
Lennox is very clever, he actually has no logical arguments to prove there is a benevolent god other then his holy book, so he comes over as nice as pie and lets his opponent be the bad guy. In fact the god be believes in is ANYTHING but benevolent, yahweh is cruel ,retributive and he only includes a tiny proportion of humanity in his original plans , the jews. So given thats a finite number , he expands his appeal to include others, but only did so in the last 2000 years when we've been around for a hell of a lot longer then that , doesn't this seem strange to you ?
@@reverendbarker650 Lennox isn't there to lecture on Christianity he already assumes that Atkins is aware of all the arguments so he go over there main ideas. In Orthodox Christianity you can't reach god only by pure logic you also need experience because we aren't logical according to David Hume And the other point is just a misrepresentation of Christianity, Jews don't go to heaven because they are Jews. we can all go to heaven and we can all reject it Moreover, Atkins didn't have any logical nor illogical arguments at all he already preassumed Christianity is wrong and therefore "It is intellectually lazy" (in a funny british accent) actually if you think about this statement from Atkins it doesn't make any sense
That’s a mischaracterization of OT texts. You’re slapping the 21st century on top of the ancient world. Israel was establishing itself as a nation in the midst of severe brutality led by Assyria and Egypt. As violent as Israel was asked to be, it was still less than the nations around them. The purpose of that nation was to be a shining light in the world, not to the exclusion of others but to the benefit of the world. And those born before Christ were not excluded from salvation. And you can dismiss Lennox’s arguments, but you certainly can’t deny they’re at least arguments.
This was at least a little painful to watch. I salute Professor Lennox for his patience. I don't think I could have handled such a difficult conversation anywhere as graciously as he did.
I wonder if John wonders himself how he doesn't fly off the handle and punch some of these guys in their belligerent, arrogant faces? Only explanation is by the grace of God.
Something I notice from the vast majority of atheist scientists is that they don’t believe in a God and if you do believe in God it’s not “ okay, whatever “ it’s more like “ I must do whatever I can to shut you up “
Took the words right out of my mouth! Atkins was constantly and consistently interrupting Lennox and then getting angry when it happened to him. He honestly acted like a child, constantly speaking over others and getting snippy when it happened to him. Then he’d make jokes and insults and act smart. I would not be able to handle him on the basis of addressing him as an adult, that’s for sure!
Honestly, I was expecting something better from Peter, more I watched him more I got annoyed. First he started huffing and puffing. Then he acted like a bully boy calling Christian Nobel prize winners irrational. Peter can be a good pub debater but not at the university. John Lennox was very respectful and very well answered the questions.
I've listened to a few of Peter's debates and saying God did it is "intellectually lazy" is his stock answer. But saying Karl Benz built the first automobile with an internal combustion engine isn't intellectually lazy, it's what happened.
@UCyG70eXQ_ZigqLzgTUavdAQ Already the first statement of Lennox is full of lies and fraud. More interesting is his interrupting "response" at 20:42: is how to respond to this in a very "nice" and "pleasant" manner. It is more than obvious that the burden of proof is due to the person asserting the claim. With the same "argument" I would like John Lennox to disprove the 500+ k other images people have ever made of their figure of a whatever omniscient being. Or to put simpler: He shall start and disprove that the tooth ferry does NOT exist.
@active285 But he was rude from the very beginning. I came here to hear his side and I leave feeling that I watched him have a defensive, arrogant tantrum. If he truly believes John Lennox is a lazy intellectual and deluded then he should have just listened and calmly presented his evidence. Would he bristle and insult a child who believes in Santa Clause?! He added weight to John’s argument by being so defensive.
@@active285 well then he shouldnt have accepted the debate in the first place and should have stayed in his superior darwinian chimp cave munching leaves and rubbing rocks instead of refusing to engage in any healthy dialogue or meaningful discussion .
Prof Lennox is an absolute legend! His countenance always display hope and peace whilst his opposition consistently display hostility and arrogance. The reason for this should be clear to the wise and, not necessarily, to the intellectual.😉
Atkins saying our morality came from evolution is the weakest answer I've ever heard. No matter how science and technology progress in the end our morality will dictate what should be done with it. And Morality cannot be explained by science. John is right it is innate in us what is good and evil even as a child I know when I have deliberately did something wrong even before my parents will scold me. "Do not do unto others what you don't want others to do unto you" is the golden rule because we all know it's true. Even the evil people doesn't want anyone to harm them. I believe in God because I believe in Good and evil and science cannot explain why there is good and evil.
A powerful line of evidence which becomes obvious as this debate plays out is the nature of the two participants. Scripture says that a mature Christian will be characterized by "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness...". It is easy to discern that one of these men exemplifies those qualities, and the other does not.
Yes, because we know that every christian throughout history has exemplified those virtues. Just ask the pagans they persecuted. Atheists can be assholes. So can christians, and buddhists, and sikhs, and muslims, etcetc. We're humans, and humans, largely, suck. What you're claiming as evidence of something is in fact evidence of nothing at all.
"Scripture says that a mature Christian will be characterized by "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness...". But that's just the propaganda. The reality is very, very different.
The fact you think the existence of God is proved by the fact Atkins is a grumpy old man and Lennox looks fat and jolly tells us a great deal about how childish and limited the thinking processes of religious people are.
Much has been said about John Lennox' patience, which is remarkable, but the MVP here has to be Justin. He is the perfect moderator and does a brilliant job of summarizing each point for both. Outstanding!
Why should he respect the religious? Think they’ve had it their own way for the past 2000 years and none of them have ever proved their god exists. Comes to a point that religion and its believers are no longer worthy of respect.
@@vashna3799 - well, maybe because they are your human beings fellows? @Steven Pounsett Ha! Steven Pounsett, thought the name was familiar, your the one who I argued with on another video, I asked what is the purpose of stars blowing up every single second in the universe and you either wouldn’t, or couldn’t answer that, and now you’ve got the brass neck to start lecturing me on morality. Right, well I won’t duck your comment unlike you. Regarding North Korea, it is the most prayer force state in the world. From dawn to dusk it’s citizens must praise their “Dear Leader “ as if he is Devine. The late great journalist Christopher Hitchens, one of the very few westerners to visit the country said this: “Religion is a totalitarian belief. It is the wish to be a slave. It is the desire that there be an unalterable, unchallengeable, tyrannical authority who can convict you of thought crime while you are asleep, who can subject you to total surveillance around the clock every waking and sleeping minute of your life, before you're born and, even worse and where the real fun begins, after you're dead. A celestial North Korea. Who wants this to be true? Who but a slave desires such a ghastly fate? I've been to North Korea. It has a dead man as its president, Kim Jong-Il is only head of the party and head of the army. He's not head of the state. That office belongs to his deceased father, Kim Il-Sung. It's a necrocracy, a thanatocracy. It's one short of a trinity I might add. The son is the reincarnation of the father. It is the most revolting and utter and absolute and heartless tyranny the human species has ever evolved. “ Now to correct again on the fact that Scandinavian nations (Iceland,Sweden,Denmark,Norway) are among the least religious nations and yet have among the highest standards of living, low crime and poverty, full equal rights for women shows the nonsense you’ve just stated that secular countries such as those fair worse. Japan, too is now largely secular and again, high standards of living, low crime and poverty, excellent health and education too. Canada and Australia have their fair % of religious people but both have secular democracies, and the USA as a secular constitution, written by its founding fathers, none of whom were Christian (Franklin was an atheist, Washington, Jefferson, Adams were Deists) . Compare that to countries were religion does rule, the entire Islamic world is ruled by its theocracy and is among the worst places to live. African nations under the thumb of Christian theocrats have Third world lives literally under the rule of their leaders telling them that contraception and birth control is “sinful “. And than trying to say it’s the non religious who start the most wars. The First World War was between the all the major Christian empires of Europe, Germany, British, French, Austrian -Hungarian as well as the Islamic Ottoman Empire too and very nearly obliterated each other and ending the term “Christendom” which became redundant after. And the Nazis, main antagonists of the Second World War were anything but secular, each Nazi belt buckle said “God On Our Side”, 40% of the dreaded SS were confessing Catholics, Hitler’s birthday was celebrated every year by the Catholic Church and Hitler himself never renounced his Catholicism and also believed in the Occult and superstitious Nordic myths. So that pretty much refutes your idiotic statement saying the non-religious cause the most wars. Looking forward to your refutation AND what the purpose is with stars that blow up every single second.
@@bandie9101 The irony is there are certain religious extremists who feel the same in reverse. We have to at least start from a baseline of respect. We can't presume that someone is stupid just because they sit it differently. I was an Atheist for a long long time before I came to Faith in Christ. I understand the Atheistic world view all too well, and I even still defend parts of it, including the common "You just hate God!" argument I hear from my religious friends. It's easy enough to box us all in.
Ben mad for what? Instead of you people reading for yourself, thinking for yourself for the legitimacy of the arguments and their defenses. You brought a scientist to debate philosopher and because he didn't adress some of the points and you obviously didn't understand most of what he was saying, you concluded that your own worldview is correct (this is called cognitive disonance). These apologetics shouldn't represent you go read and find out for yourself, this militant atheism and stupid christianity lead nowhere.
I've never thought more than this for myself and if you'd do the same you probably wouldn't be saying this. There's a problem in that "atheism" or evolution theory just like in every other belief. You read it from books at your school, people say that school makes you smarter and you believe it because those teaching in school speak of their theory as the truth. I don't need anyone to think for me but it seems like you do when you accept that as "the truth". When you say "stupid christian" you do that from pure hate and not one bit from actual knowledge. You've let those people take your mind in their hands and form a view that you think is your own but it's not. At the end of the day it's foolish to think that science could ever answer those biggest questions which Atkins was referring to as the unneeded or fake questions. He is partly right because science can't ever answer those but it doesn't mean those questions cannot be asked nor that they wouldn't be real questions as any other question. Now if I said that Darwin knew in his own theory is incorrect (which he really knew) it's as true from my mouth as those who say it is true. That might be confusing but scientists can't actually prove it in any way in its fullest state. What I noted here in this debate was Atkins basically saying "that's nonsense", "there's no God" when Lennox was explaining himself to him. Anyway I don't need those people to think for me it's just interesting to see their arguments even tho everyone knows it leads nowhere. Please don't try to drive me to write a whole dissertation of this topic and go see the world from a perspective where no books or theories are influencing your own way of thinking. In the end everything is a belief
Ben there are many problems with what have you written. First, atheism is not necessarily belief in the non-existence of gods (gnostic atheism), it could also be not believing in god (agnostic atheism). Second atheism is not to be confused with the theory of evolution, because atheism is stance on worldviews that involve gods, if you are gnostic atheist. If you are agnostic atheists then atheism is not worldview neither a theory. Evolution through natural selection is hypothesis that has never been proven wrong and that's why we call it theory. You are misrepresenting facts with theory. Fact is based on repetitive observation, while theory is idea of how something has happened which is experimentally tested. Intelligent design doesn't come even close to theory of evolution, because intelligent design is not a scientific theory. You are also misusing the term truth, which is generally used as a property of statements which are to be tested using our senses. Truth doesn't exists as a property of reality. And evolution has never been presented as the truth rather as an idea that has explanatory power and has been experimentally verified.
I'd feel hopeless knowing that my whole story is a pre-determined story written by some big douchebag in the sky who pretends to be all good, despite torturing his creations, his "children" every waking hour.

It's a joy from the inside. Happiness is a choice. When you have a problem, you can drink it out and forget until you wake up. It feels empty. But when you have the Holy Spirit, the joy is genuine inside. We can observe that it's the dopamine, serotonin and other good hormones that make us happy. But when it is unlimited, that's supernatural.
I really appreciate your comment. I find it interesting how Peter was very negative and crass with his comments towards John. I believe it's because the atheist worldview has no hope. Life has no purpose therefore there is no peace in the soul. I believe Peter's language was only in reference to the discuss that he feels on the inside. He doesn't even try to be open-minded.

As an atheist, my heart was with John in this one. His patience and peace alone made me sympathetic to Christ.. it was evident in him. Atkins was rude and insolent. Atkins himself asserted that physics presupposes mathematics: an entirely non-empirical domain of knowledge. How can he then sit there and claim physicalism to be true? Where is the number 7? John sits there, a mathematician, as a perfect example of someone who has ‘wasted his time’ studying something that ‘can’t be tested’. Yet his entire discipline underpins Atkins’… philosophical and mathematical questions are just as important as they are seperate from empirical ones
Your ability to be so unbiased in your assessment is a rare ability. Hopefully one day you find evidence that is sufficient enough for you to become a believer in Christ. @@JamesRichardWiley You say that as if there’s no way out of it. Like there’s no hope. The Bible clearly says to believe Christ died and rose on the third day and you shall be saved. Ask for forgiveness, repent for your sins and you shall be cleansed. You’ve obviously have not looked deep into the Bible as well. It talks about the Holy Spirit which gives you an inner peace and joy. As you could see in the video it looks like John Lennox has no worries and an inner peace, I wonder where he and I myself got it from. Besides the Bible seems like that way most of the time because it’s focused on human redemption, we sinned against God and chose darkness. He’s not going to pat us on our backs and say “very good faithful servant”, no he says “depart from me worker of iniquity I never knew you”. That’s why there’s grace and hope in Jesus Christ Seek the truth and it will be given onto you. Seek Jesus.
When Atkins says even if he were standing at the foot of the cross and witnessed the resurrection he still wouldn’t believe.. that is truly something. He would explain it away as hallucination. Truly fascinating. This directly answers what Sam Harris says which is “God could give us a sign right now to make us all believe but He won’t do it”… He could give this huge sign and no matter what many still wouldn’t believe. Peter Atkins is stunningly arrogant, shockingly rude, and lacks the decency to listen and have a thoughtful debate with a colleague without interruptions. Humility is not in his vocabulary - when he disagrees with John, he repeatedly responded with insults and belittled everyone who disagreed with his view. Throughout the debate, John Lennox was respectful, kind, brillant, and even complimentary to Peter. He should have given John the same courtesy - Civility and respect should be the foundation of any discussion - regardless of what side you're on.
I fully agree. I expected a lot more from Atkins. I have lost quite a bit of respect for the man now. Just remember... to him, everyone else is just stupid, lazy, think only nonsense, and not worth listening to. That about sums it up. I also found him to not really understand the opposing side. He based response after response on a wrong assumption. I agree with your word "shocking". Indeed. On several levels too. His level of misunderstanding and his horrid personality traits is quite striking.
I am a Christian. I have had a lot of great discussions with Atheists. Most of the time there comes forth a really deep exchange of ideas - both of us supporting our own beliefs with rebuttals. Sometimes, however, the discussions go completely South almost immediately. In my experience - it's the attitude that Atkins approaches this discussion with, along with his incessant interruptions and degrading of Lennox that causes it. These two men have vastly different demeanors. Lennox is calm and respectful and listens to his opponent - while Atkins seems upset and flustered. Anxious and rude. "You don't get to say it's true" is a phrase from a person who doesn't understand Christianity at all.
Lennox is full of evasions. In response to Atkins's request for evidence for the existence of god, Lennox just deflects with statement about his personal beliefs. No evidence.

My mother believed like Peter does, that religion is just an emotional crutch, until she came to the point of death after a serious car accident, and found herself confronted with the reality of God, that He held her life in His hand and brooded over it, then gave it back to her. From that moment onwards she started recovering in a miraculous way (a secular Jewish doctor who I spoke to at the time informed me that (and I quote) "Your mother's a miracle, you know that?"). She could no longer, after that experience deny the existence of God, and this set her on a journey of herself entering into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ some few years later. God was merciful to her. I pray he may be as merciful to Peter Atkins before his death...
I am one that HOPES Peter will record his transition as an experiment for his followers/students of his belief. What a great experiment that would be! If he is so confident there is no such thing as God, right? It should be a "natural" transition, with zero intervention. If he is serious about his position, let him step up as a Bonafide donor to science....

On the age of your God, the earliest modern anatomical human (i.e. a human with essentially the same cognitive capacity as current humans) is known to have lived 150,000-200,000 years ago. That's 140,000 years of humans who never knew your god or even knew of organised religion (earliest dates somewhere between 8000-6000 years ago in Sumer). Anyway, I'm not here to change your minds but its something to think about.
@@Paulo-py4mm Every Christian scholar I know says the universe is 13.8 billion years old and the earth somewhere around 6 billion. Totally don’t understand how listening to Peter Atkins proves that a video exists ????? I would agree he comes over as somewhat arrogant - on the other hand Lennox comes across as extremely condescending
@@romnarz having better arguments and able to present his point better = condescending?? what kind of logic is this? So anyone who you disagree with but winning has to be condescending? Explain to me why would a person who is condescending be praising the other person who he is condescending towards to from time to time? Why did John praise Peter?
Thank GOD for the rare people like John Lennox. He is a gift from God to other humans. Those who choose to ignore or insult him are missing out, at their own peril. 🙏 Bless you John. Thank you for your beauty and commitment to the truth. 🙏
Peter and John are both gifts, both crazy smart, it must be exhausting to be that angry towards someone so kind and humble toward a person constantly insulting him and for what? And that’s what I ask you? For what reason is your attitude towards him like this? Why so angry?
Must be nice for Atkins to have such faith and belief in the knowledge that he knows all. Atkins: "We should all be open-minded. The only thing we can believe is evidence"
Atkins: "No amount of evidence would convince me to rescind my position."
Atkins brings to my mind a biblical truth -- "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" by showing me how dogmatic a scientist's mind can be.
Exactly what I thought! His position is unfalsifiable!
I have a question :What is the difference between being open minded and gullible ? It seems to me a thin line ,I need some insights
The inner peace he has is Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It’s the missing hole every human has in their soul. I pray for Peter’s salvation!
It is called "delusion"

Notice who is polite versus who name calls
Notice who meets the other on their level versus who uses profanity (eg using Christ’s name in vain when one is debating atheism with a Christ follower)

Very well said.

It was definitely a blessing to watch this level of patience be demonstrated by John Lennox
You like John Lennox because he says everything you want to hear, you want to believe in a god and Lennox confirms to your satisfaction that there is a god, he doesn't, but he convinces you that he does. If you had any critical thinking left you would see that Lennox talks nonsense.

A true Christian believes in what the Lord Jesus Christ said. Like John 17:1-3
@cynthiaramirez8305 You really meant John 17:1-5, right? Everyone seems to be terrified of verse 5...
Sadly its all but extinct in the US.
if missing the point was an art. religious people like you would be the picaso of it

“To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.”-Saint Thomas Aquinas
How do you relate to any person?
By talking with them, right?
By spending time together, getting to know each other...
Jesus aleady knows you in and out, He knows your thoughts, good and bad, He knows your hopes and desires... So it's up to you now to get to know Him 🙂
He is very near you, if you start talking to him, He will draw even nearer.
Ask Him all your questions, tell Him tht you want to relate to Him, but don't know how. Ask him to show you!
Reading the Bible is priority number one to get to know Jesus, because His words are in it. And these words have power! They will change your heart and thinking for the better 😊👍👍👍
Talking to peoplewho already know Jesus, spending time in fellowship is important and exciting, also for seeing whatJesis does right now!

If you seek the Lord carnally, then if bounds to fail. Just like the reply of Anna, she experienced the healing power of the Lord which is one of His ministries during His life on earth. premise 2 : I think
conclusion : I am
Not sure why you consider Descartes to be wrong about that, the reasoning seems valid and I see no reason to doubt the premises.
That’s a mischaracterization of OT texts. You’re slapping the 21st century on top of the ancient world. The purpose of that nation was to be a shining light in the world, not to the exclusion of others but to the benefit of the world. And those born before Christ were not excluded from salvation. The First World War was between the all the major Christian empires of Europe, Germany, British, French, Austrian -Hungarian as well as the Islamic Ottoman Empire too and very nearly obliterated each other and ending the term “Christendom” which became redundant after.

@@jokerxxx354 i think you automatically lost the argument by calling a stranger "stupid", right off the bat.

I love how most Christian debaters are more often than not, are happy on the inside and it's evident on the outside.
It's because they have a friend in Jesus.
But scientists have sub atomic particles and galaxies to play with.
The Lord grants us peace and happiness, because we know that He died not just for the believers, but also for the unbelievers,so that all may have a chance to live forever away from death, pain and suffering, but to live with happiness, peace, joy and with the Holy presence of the Lord at our side.God bless.
