  • The U.S. says it has evidence that Russia's invasion has been "a strategic disaster," and Ukraine says some Russian forces are now slowly withdrawing from the north. But there are fears they're regrouping to attack elsewhere. Holly Willams has more on the catastrophe left behind.

LOL this isnt' WW2. The Russians are not getting Western assistance and are not mobilizing a nation of millions. They're retreating because they have failed to secure Ukraine, they hold nothing of value and lack the supply to conduct a prolonged siege.

They're not retreating. For the last 8 years Russia has only cared about Donbas. Kyiv was a ruse to force the Ukrainians to split their forces. If Russia only attacked Donbas Ukraine would have sent their entire military. Instead they only had 100,000 in Donbas and their other 150,000 spread out defending Kyiv, Kharkiv and other major cities. They got played like a fiddle.

It appears to me that Russia has gone to its “Plan B”, which is to consolidate its territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, and extend a land bridge on the southern border as far west as Odessa. Parts of that area have been under Russian control since 2014, and I expect them to be “dug in” there. Pushing them out will be difficult. I hope they can.

I'm not an expert but I still want to ease the worries of some people in the comment section and also address some misconceptions based on what I've seen and what I've heard from actual experts who have been correct in their reading of the war so far.
    1. It is highly unlikely that Russia plans to nuke Kyiv or deploy a chemical weapon. People see Russia pulling out in mass and misunderstand what this means. Russia's offensive on Kyiv had already stalled weeks ago and they were actively digging into defend. We've seen this through satellite imagery its about as confirmed as it can be. Ukraine then began a series of small successful counter attacks. Yes, they were small compared to Russia's over all advance but the fact they were losing ground at all should concerning. Quite simply, the offensive on Kyiv had burned itself out and risked becoming a protracted conflict that would consume Russian supply for little gain or possibly active loss. Certainly there was little chance of them gaining the momentum to complete an encirclement of the city. This is something that happens in war. Offensives burn out their momentum and forces need to be regrouped and resupplied before further offensives can be carried out. Russian leadership realized this. I think they've also come to realize that their logistics just are not up to task with three separate prongs of invasion. So they are consolidating their forces. They are pulling out of the kyiv territory and are now going to focus their attention in the east where they have had more success and where there are generally more pro Russian sentiments. This could also ease some of their logistical issues. They won't be trying to maintain as many supply lines. So no.
    2. Dropping a nuke would just be a terrible idea for Russia. We have to think, what would they gain? Russia has only maintained their high support for the war thanks to strict control of the media. Most Russians refuse to believe civilian targets are being hit and that this is strictly a war against right wing nationalists. But here's the thing, you can't hide the nuking of an entire capital. No restriction would be enough, word would reach the Russian people and they wouldn't be able to lie to themselves. It would likely breed chaos at home. It's also a terrible idea for international diplomacy. Russia is short on allies these days and most of those allies already can barely justify Russia's actions. Nuking a soverieng nation would likely drive away what international support they do have and would likely mean active war with nato. After all if Russia has shown their willingness to use nukes all bets are off. Simply, it is a bad idea. Russia has everything to lose via the act and nothing to gain. And Putin may be a monster but he's not raving mad. He would realize this path is irrational.
    3. Make no mistake. This is a Russian defeat. Their original battle plan was clearly to swiftly encircle the capital and squeeze out the government to earn a quick peace while tying down ukraine in the east and south and gaining as much territory as possible. They've lost. They've realized they can not take ukraine in such a way at this time. This is a new phase of the war. Russia is shifting their forces to attack in the east likely in an attempt to win a victory there that they can sell to the people of Russia. We've already seen Russian forces moving east. Things are going to be brutal there. Russia will be moving more forces there but so will ukraine now that kyiv has been relieved. Things are going to be very bloody and Russia may very well ramp up the attacks on civilian infrastructure even further. Russia is not currently in control of the situation and that makes them even more dangerous to a civilian populace.

I am afraid if the US were to send Ukraine planes that they wouldnt last long enough to change the air situation. Ukraine's Air force just isn't big enough to sustain prolonged air combat. There losses would just add to the misery. I think anti aircraft systems would be better suited for the situation and the use of the current planes on hand. Once Russia discovers the airport in which missions are carried out , those planes would be toast from missile strikes. You would have to service them out of country and that would lead to dragging in other countries into the conflict.

SUMMARY OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THE UKRAINIAN CAMPAIGN
The real war is just beginning, before that there had only been the special operation. And that's no propaganda. In fact, from the very beginning of the operation, the Russians did not accumulate an excess of forces for the offensive, did not liquidate half of the Ukrainian army in the barracks, did not destroy sources of fuel and lubricants, did not establish military offices and field police units in the occupied territories behind them. Despite these miscalculations, the Russian army remained undefeated, and prevented any counterattack by the Ukrainian troops, and many large Ukrainian groupings were surrounded. Russia controls the Black Sea coast, has an air advantage, respects the Geneva Convention and does not use massive airstrikes to capture cities. However, despite the achievements, it became clear that the time had come to wage a real war, and this is the only way to achieve the surrender of the enemy, the destruction of its fortified areas, the liquidation of the trapped troops and the liberation of the most important cities.

They're more so regrouping to take a smaller portion of Ukraine. To realistically capture "Ukraine" as a whole...Russia would have needed at least about 750,000 troops. You need a roughly 10-to-1 ration (10 Russian troops for every one Ukrainian soldier) for urban warfare. That's a general thing that is known for urban warfare and even then it is risky. You're going into buildings one by one where your enemy (Ukrainians) have the advantage. You could step into a building and one soldier gets shot, the others cover him and fire back in the direction of the first shot only for another soldier to get shot from another room across the hall in the opposite direction. Before you know it, half of the soldiers in your group that were supposed to be clearing the building are incapacitated and you haven't even made it through the building yet. Now imagine that in the thousands of buildings across Ukraine.

    • @anenemystand5582

Don't be foolish. They've realized a siege is untenable and that invading from three directions stretched their logistics to thin. This isn't a movie. They're pulling out to refocus their attack on the donbas where they've had more success and have more support among the people. We've already seen signs of such a movement.
What would Russia gain from lobbing a nuke? They still have their people convinced they aren't attacking civilians and their relationship with the allies they maintain are tenuous. A nuke would shatter all that and would likely lead to open war with nato.
