Thank you DW News for going to peripheral cities like Rēzekne! Rēzekne is beautiful city in Latvia. 👍 As well as I am very proud of Maria Dubitska from Rēzekne! Latvia stand strong in support of Ukraine! ✌
Won't be beautiful much longer if Russia destroys it.....and that's exactly what will happen if you don't fight with the Ukrainians. Put together all the countries touching Russia. They are more powerful than Russia. They are just to close thinking to the Chinese and Russian communist thought.....team up with the West. Or lose your identity as a people/country. -it’s sad that people can’t at least try to learn the language of the country that they live in, but if the russians aren’t happy in the country that they live in, i don’t see why they just don’t move back to russia
That's a question latvians often ask as well. Short answer is russians think they own us. Very many russians consider latvians as lesser humans, as something they own, they still call our native language as "dog" language, they basically don't see as equals. Their stance is very agressive, entitled. The older generations teach this same mindset to their children and grandchildren. They go around saying that we don't matter, that our language doesn't matter + internet comments are a total cess pit of hate and propoganda. Even in daily life it's not hard to find very entitled, xenofobic russians acting out for the dumbest things, for instance, you saying "good day" to them in latvian in a medical facility.

DW, stop parroting Kremlin propganada yourself - Latvia was NEVER part of the Soviet Union, itvwas illegally occupied by it..
Russian-speakers outside Russia love the image created by Russian TV.
Question is WHY they do not move to "promised land=El Dorado" in Russia? Nobody is keeping them with force under NATO umbrella. They do not move, they prefer to love Russia FROM AFAR.
Latvia belongs to the Russian speaking residents as much as it does to the Lettish speakers. Why should they have to leave?
@@ssir5927 A shallow pretense for land grabbing former Soviet territory. They are living as a Russian minority. They should move to Russia, and stop demanding war for their enclaves. It doesn't matter. Russia as we know it is done. Russia always self-immolates. Always. It can't accept its status as a pauper nation. Every time it tries to punch above its weight, it gets knocked down. Still, it never stops killing its neighbors, or its own people. The East only knows death, and dysfunction.
@@ssir5927 It isn't so much about the language itself, as it is about where people's political loyalties lay. Native Russian speakers in Latvia who actually consider themselves to be Latvians should obviously be treated as equals and should speak whatever language they want. But native Russian speakers in Latvia who are nationally Russian, or at least consider themselves to be, can be a problem if they are loyal to the Kremlin. They can serve as an excuse for Russia to invade, using the exact same "liberation" rhetoric that they used in Georgia and Ukraine. So if any of them really want to live in Russia so badly, it would be infinitely easier for all sides if they simply moved to Russia, than it would be for Russia to come to them. After all, it is only an hour drive from Rezekne to the Russian border
I have never understood why being Russian speaking is assumed to be pro-Russian. I'm English speaking but see the UK as a foreign country.

Not much to compare with, if they have never left the country. Those that do, don't come back.
Latvia and the Baltic countries seems to be very nationalist after having been under foreign occupation and seeing what war, communism and slow ideological takeovers of society can do. They're doing what it takes to protect their peace, their traditions and their cultural heritage from anyone who tries to steal or get rid of it. The more western and northern european countries could learn a lot from them.
