This is just about the only video on UA-cam that emphasizes that Amp Volume is essential to getting those famous unique Fuzz clean tones - and the reality that 98% of us can't play that loud at home. Subscribed.

    Great video!
My tone recipe would be to first max the fuzz and then lower your guitar volume until you achieve a bright hairy clean, if it doesn’t clean up enough lower your fuzz until it does, now EQ your amp to get the perfect “clean fuzz” sound that cuts. Now you can max your guitar volume and get the all- out fuzz tone. Fuzz should ideally give u 3 tones, clean, rhythm and solo

So..... when YOU (yes, in particular) play using a fuzz, you use it as you ONLY gain stage?
I've been trying to make a fuzzface work in my pedalboard, maybe im doing it wrong but..... I can only make it work if I:
EQ around it (using a pedal or the amp)...
Place it first in the chain...
Have no other gain stages.... or just slight boosts in front of it to "color" the sound.

I can recall watching Chris Buck changing tone with fingers and gtr ctrl . Just by trying to imitate him, i automatically loved my pedal. Goes from Roger Mayer to my ChaseBliss mk2 preamp. I find my Spitfire more forgiving. I've heard good thing about the elect ladyland one.
Go for the real deal. I communicated with Sir Mayer, i wanted to mod my Rocket pedal, though it was not possible, he's been a gentleman and took time to explain.
I love to use the spitfire as a boost, which is rare with me. I never heard a fuzz producing a modern lead sound like the Spitfire in my life.

Great video. I got into fuzz this year and love the way you can get so many sounds just by playing with guitar's volume and tone knobs. I run a boost (or two) after it. A bias knob or and trimpot can be useful if you like to starve the circuit of V (low battery glitchy effect). This sounds bad at low volumes but loud in a mix can make the guitar sound very present.

this is awesome content and really rewarding to dig into. When I get a new fuzz pedal I dont even judge it after first testdrive because after a while I sometimes found combinations that I really did not at all have on my mind at first and found in the end that that gave me some of the best tones I ever achieved. My latest example is that I have used a treble booster (Analogman Beano Boost which imo is very close to fuzz) in combi with JHS Angry Charlie V3 Pedal into Pedal Platform Amp and found that was absolutely amazing. The ExpressoFX Fuzz seems to be a stellar piece of gear !!

I think the one thing to mentioned that I only just figured out is to keep the volume knob on the guitar itself lower. I keep mine at 3, turn the fuzz on and slowly raise the volume. It goes from cleanish to great tone that’s fuzzy but still getting dynamics. If I have the knob at 10 it’s too hairy and just sounds muffled. It’s great to be able to control the sound without having to bend down and tweak knobs all day. 😁

Very helpfull insight about a very deep topic, getting fuzz right is like the biggest rabbit hole on the internet when it comes to guitar.
What's your thought about all the before / after boost debate for fuzz ? I'm currently using the Russian Big Muff with an overdrive before to sharpen the tone a little bit and fixing the dull sound with no middle you discribe and it seems that putting a boost after the fuzz just makes it noisier.
    Cheers from France !

  • @kadeemward

I tried cranking my Laney LX12 and it didn't work. It's a 12 watt 6.5" speaker combo. However today I increased the drive on my Joyo American Sound, which is a Fender Deluxe amp in a box. The tone for my MXR Blue Box & Joyo Voodoo Octave (I bought a second one, since I found out the hard way that destroyed the previous one with a power adapter with lower voltage) were MUCH better, and I figure with a little more experimentation, I can get better tones.
I hope readers don't get fooled by the small amp im using now, but it's much brighter and louder than the 100 watt bass head I was using in the past.
I think I may be on to something also. I usually listen to vintage rock through that amp, Hendrix, Zeppelin and the stoner metal band Sleep. So I was wondering if it's possible to get a cheap solid state amp (or tube for that matter) sounding as 'professional' as the tones on those recordings played through the amp. I'm sure with the right gear you can penetrate those barriers quite easily! I mean you play through a 12 watt too Sasha, and the tones are killer, but then there's a concern about headroom. I'll be honest, I know nothing about headroom, because Barbados is a third world island, and tube amps in this country are extremely rare, and most people can't afford high end gear. I do however want to save for a Fender Champion 100 that's for sale at a local music store. It will cost me around $1050 Barbadian ($525 US), I'm mainly buying it to experiment with loud tones. My neighbours actually don't complain much when I play loud, so it's all good practice for future live gigs and a mental investment for my future professional career in music.
I still want a Dominion Fuzz or Isle Of Tone Haze 69 out of curiosity and also as a treat for myself. I hope Erin can build a fuzz that sounds like that low E string slide on '1983' right after he sings "I can hear Atlantis full of cheer" in the right channel.
I also hope Erin can build one that sounds like The Stooges' Raw Power disc 2 live tracks, particularly 'Head On'. 😎
Thanks again for your brilliant insight Sasha!

I max out my MXR Blue Box and stack it with either an 808 Tubescreamer clone or the Boss DS-1. The DS in particular gives you an amazing tone. I have the level at noon, tone at 9 o clock and the distortion at 12 o clock when stacking. I also use an amp sim based off of a Fender tweed amp, it's a Joyo American Sound. I use that pedal as an always on boost. It gives my 12 watt Laney LX12 amp more character. I'm still not sure why some solid state amps need a preamp pedal to sound better. Maybe you can explain why Sasha? Are some solid state amps built without preamps or is there another factor involved?

I dont know if people really understand why Boutique pedals cost as much as they do. It depends on what you're buying but let's take a vintage style fuzz for example. To produce the sounds that us players are looking for, the caps, resistors and transistors must be chosen, and taken and replaced if they dont match up in the circuit. If it's certain vintage parts that it takes, it's gets exponentially more difficult. The scarcity and degradation from time and elements is just another contributing factor of the price. So it may take months or years just to source the parts and they have to be in large batches for tuning the circuit. So time + labor + parts + skill = a costly but beautiful sounding pedal. Now, grant it, some of the builders are taking advantage but you'll know them when you research their rep. For those of us that just want that ONE, I'd say go for it. You'll spend the same amount buying this one and that one and being disappointed over and over.

  • @KahruSuomiPerkele
    @KahruSuomiPerkele Рік тому

Yes, the transistors need to be matched (on a fuzz face/tone bender) if the builders just copy schematics from the internet.
If they know what they're doing, then transistors don't need to be matched.

I really can't crank my 50W 12'' tube amp in the room (around 70dB) max), so I combine the use of boosts and ODs after the fuzz. My chain is : Fulltone '70 Fuzz > 535Q Wah (true bypassed) > MXR Super compressor > Vibe > Fulltone FD II Mosfet > Fender Engager Boost > OCD > Boost > BOSS DD7 delay. All of those are true bypass except the MXR compressor, two 10' cables, almost no tone loss. The boost at he end is a buffer too. My fuzz is almost always on and I get it to sound right using the Fender boost and OCD after it, all 3 knobs on the fuzz cranked to the max. I have great tones but with some noise and fuzz oscilation which I tame down using the guitar volume knob. The fuzz also cleans up nicely even with the Fender boost and the OCD after it. Raising the overall noise floor is unevitable if you're shaping your tone on a ''quiet'' 50W tube amp. Using analog pedals and tube amp to capture some great vintage tones always coms with some compromise in terms of noise or being too loud or both...it wasn't easy even for Jimi, too.

And I found that it sounds great wherever you put it. My DOD Carcosa fuzz sounded just a little thin (not as thin as Big Muff or Fire Red Fuzz by Mad Professor. I put the Møller into the fuzz and it was fine. And I don't know why, but I tried the Carcosa fuzz into the Møller and it sounded great. It made the fuzz just sound fatter, heavy AF. So it depends on your overdrive and other pedals, it depends on the combination. The T-Rex Møller works almost with anything and almost anywhere.

@@7thheaventruth T-Rex Møller is very transparent. Some say it's like a Tube Screamer, but it's not that nasally and mid pushed, and it had more low end. I like it as an overdrive and stacked into other pedals.

Hm, sounds like you’re still struggling here yourself.
Firstly, the fuzz sounds way better into a slightly cleaner amp (the famous edge of breakup). This way you get more „personality“ out of it. When cranking the amp or putting an additional gain stage after it, you make every fuzz sound the same since the 2nd gain stage is always dominant. (But to be honest this pedal doesn’t sound too good to begin with).
Secondly, absolutely DO crank the fuzz knob(!) and lower the vol knob on your guitar instead to control gain. Good fuzz pedals will work wonders this way.

If you want distortion buy distortion pedals not fuzz.
Fuzz isn't nice and that is why it's great.

You are putting too much mojo mysticism into the fuzz design! Stop sniffing corks!
Only Germanium transistors needs to be matched, but it is only in a few circuits where matched transistors are required, and not all of them.
Silicon fuzzes does not require any matching at all…

Hello Sascha, Which fuzz pedal would you recommend for the early Jimmy Page sounds...I've already tried a few, the newer models have always only been compromises and the good or praised older ones are extremely expensive and hard to come by... do you have any tips? I would also like something older, preferably with OC81D transistors... regards
