    I will never forget the day I met Paul for the first time. He was our local go to repair guy and I went to the shop with my 1976 Martin D28 for a set up. I knocked and he said come in. I entered and he was alone in the shop, sitting with his back to me at the opposite wall at his bench. I stopped and without turning around, he said "See that guitar sitting on the dresser next to you"...it was an electric 12 string with no strings on it. I said "Yes, an electric 12 string, that's beautiful." He said, "Well, it WAS!" He was very agitated and as he continued he got louder and louder and angrier. He went on to explain that he had built the guitar for Nancy Wilson of Heart. He said that he told her guitar tech a specific gauge string set to use to preserve the neck. He then said "And what did he do? He put heavier gauge strings on it and warped the neck!!!" At this point he was really yelling! He also had yet to turn around...I was still looking at his back! He went on to yell about how he was going to fix it but it was going to cost them...a lot. Those were not the words he used, but that was the gist of it! LOL I totally felt for him, mostly because I loved the guitar so much and I could understand why he would be mad, mo matter who it was for. Anyway, he suddenly stopped, turned to me, I guess realized what was going on, and said, "Hey man, What do you need?" We became friends after that. Anyway, I will never forget everything about that moment. I think the next time I went tot he shop I met John, who we called Orkie. He was sitting cross legged on top of a stool that looked kind of shaky on those old wood floors working on "BIG", the doubleneck!
    Another time I got there and Paul had accidentally left his wallet in a bar venue his band had played the night before and he asked Orkie if he'd go and get it and then asked if i'd go with him...and we did. He once asked if I'd like to do some inlay work for him, I was flattered but I couldn't have done it then. I remember a guy came in once while I was there and he had taken a pig piece of driftwood and was trying to make a guitar out of it. He was having trouble and brought it to Paul to help him out! Another time I spotted a 12th fret bird inlay he had sitting on the bench with a hole in the birds head. He told me his friend Jude Van Dyke used to make jewelry from bird inlays that, for whatever reason he didn't like for a guitar. He said this one was too dark in color and said I could have it, and I still have it to this day. My wife made Christmas cookies shaped like guitars and i always took them a batch, they liked that. This was really the old days...pre factory years!
    I saw him regularly and brought him guitars of mine to work on and sent him friends to him. When he moved to Virginia Ave. we lost touch. I still see him now and then. I think Paul was amazing, still is amazing, and worked hard for what he got. Cheers Paul, and thanks for the memories!

    The more I learn about the way that Paul has run his business, the more I'm endeared to him. The story about Ted McCarty is a tearjerker.

    I totally appreciate everything Paul has done in his career. His instruments are, IMO, the best available today. There are many things I never knew about Paul (and PRS in general) that these videos have taught me. Thank you for this series! Keep up the great work!

    It's so amazing, after 40 years in the business, to see Paul speak with an "aura" around Him that is impossible to describe. PRS has always been the best choice for me, nothing feels like them. It's always the right sound for the job.

    I first met Paul in 1987 or 88. The first PRS I played belongs to my friend Warren Haynes. Then maybe In late 1989 they made me an Artist with a Tune-o-matic bridge & Stoptail. No Trem.. I loved it. I ended up ordering a Standard with the same setup but after a bit I had it converted to a Stop/wrapover bridge and had binding around the top and gold finish only on the top ( Like a 50’s Les Paul) and had P-90’s. This was like late 1991. But I was having issues with 24-fret guitars as the neck pickup sounded “off” to me. Paul sent me a box full of various neck pickups to try in my Artist model.. never found one I liked so I sent them all back... a couple of years later they came out with the Custom22 and that was right up to my liking. I got to try David Grisom’s new guitar at NAMM that Paul made him to sound like Duane Allman’s darkburst. I flew out to D.C. on a family get together and drove over to Annapolis and Paul showed me their factory and they were right in the middle of building the new one out in Stevensville which was basically Jack’s project! But Paul took me to lunch at a little eatery out there and the two of us sat out on it’s back patio and ate and talked! Paul is one of the nicest and smartest guys I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. There was never enough time at NAMM, but I always treasured it. The one thing about Paul & his company, the people he hires are some of the nicest people and anytime I’ve ever done anything for him he acts like it was the greatest thing anyone ever did for him.I always wished I lived on the East Coast as I would have loved to go to work for him. I love working on guitars and I would imagine working for him would be like a Masters Class or getting a Doctorate in how to build a guitar! Besides, he’s an amazing guy and I love him and a couple other guys there like Brothers! Thanks Paul!

    John "Orkie" Ingram did the refret of my '87 Signature model (#106) back in 2007 and he was such a pleasure to deal with and remembered the guitar! His work was impeccable and you can't even really tell the guitar was refretted. Probably plays the best of any of the PRSi I own!

    When the guitar maker becomes as legendary as the people that play them. It's a mixed bag when I think if it wasn't for these terrible times I would have never got to see Paul tell these terrific stories and see these terrific guitars. I have three, one Custom 22 from '85 that I purchased from Jorge Santana (PRS can't verify if it was made for him, but it has some unique writing on it not seen on any other PRS) with the original moon inlays, and another one of a kind Santana model made for a NAMM show that I rescued from a collector. It's just a coincidence I bought the one from Santana's brother, I bought it because I liked it. The Santana model was a retirement present to myself. Both are incomparable, and it's all I can do to not buy a Custom 24, but I'm afraid that prices may be dropping to the point I can't pass one up.

    Paul, I was good friends with Rick Kennel who purchased an early PRS custom bass. Rick traded in his '74 Rickenbacker 4001 you modified it PRS style for $400. I purchase it and still have it and have your vintage style calling card in the case.
    I also have a '90 PRS 4 SE bass that I purchased new.
    I remember us talking in your garage/shop. You wanted my '55 Les Paul Jr pickup and pickup only, which you offered me $300. That was pretty expensive for those days. Paul Tallent

    I fought jumping on the PRS bandwagon for a long time. In the Spring of 2019 I was gifted a S2 Studio; I took it to a bar gig and I was hooked, instead of tuning every other song, I only tuned after breaks. Since then I have picked up a Custom 22...I wish I would have made the switch a long time ago.

    06:38 that's not Santana's first main guitar, it's a 1982 SA prototype. Look at the headstock. The holes for a volume pot and a rotary switch.

    Why does the ce 24 model cost more than the s2 model ?????

    • @nathonalexavier1505
      @nathonalexavier1505 4 роки тому

      La Calle Nicaragua the CE’s have a core model top calve (violin calve), they are all American just like a regular core with no import electronics. The only difference is a bolt on neck.
      The S2 have a bevelled edge/top calve. Also the electronics are import like the SE line. The S2 is essentially an all American body with import electronics whereas the CE is closer to the specs of a standard Core Model.

    • @lacallenicaragua2903
      @lacallenicaragua2903 4 роки тому

      So the CE 24 model is a little better

    • @nathonalexavier1505
      @nathonalexavier1505 4 роки тому

      La Calle Nicaragua well here’s the thing. It depends if you prefer the traditional core model body calve. If you are not bothered then you could just get an S2 and upgrade the pickups. If the different body calve bothers you then don’t bother with the S2 just go for a CE. Especially as they are cheaper than core models but still are very close in spec.
      The only thing I will say about S2 though is that electronics wise, PRS tend to try and duplicate on them what they do on the core models (just cheaper) whereas the CE models tend to get a bit forgotten about and don’t get as much focus on their electronics

    • @lacallenicaragua2903
      @lacallenicaragua2903 4 роки тому

      But the CE 24 model costs two thousand dollars and the S2 around seventeen hundred dollars.

    • @nathonalexavier1505
      @nathonalexavier1505 4 роки тому

      La Calle Nicaragua that’s because the CE24 is just closer in spec to the core models. Even if of late they don’t get many factory upgrades and variants. Me personally? I would choose a CE over an S2 everytime due to the CE being closer to the core models. The bevelled edge and import electronics on the S2 just kills it for me. Even if the electronics now have TCI pickups.
