  • Saudi Arabia continues to challenge relations with its allies, including Canada and the United States, and appears more prepared than ever to take off the gloves for battle with Iran for increased control of the Persian Gulf region.
In this lecture Bruce Riedel discusses Middle East policy with a focus on Saudi Arabia and its evolving role in the region. Riedel is director of the Intelligence Project at the Brookings Institution. He joined Brookings in 2006, after 30 years service at the Central Intelligence Agency including postings overseas in the Middle East and Europe. Riedel was a senior advisor on South Asia and the Middle East to the last four presidents of the United States in the staff of the National Security Council at the White House.

It's a great lecture about Saudi Arabia. I agree with some part of it and disagree with the other. I just want to point out that It's hard to judge or understand any country without living and talking to the people of that country. No matter how much lectures and books you attend and read, it's entirely different.

    • @essa200911

+XOFMOXHD All people in Saudi Arabia are upset because people are talking about them and they are ignorant of their religion, their culture, their knowledge and civilization. If you want to know them go and talk to them. Not talking to books and lectures which don't include any saudis :)
I'm from saudi arabia. I will tell you that there is a huge mistakes in this lecture ! they are mixing the wrong and the right together !
Imagine yourself :) , if your name is john and you are 19 years old and you live in german and there is someone from other country is talking about you and he says your name is john and you are 30 years old and you live in china :|
      lol
Also, you can't talk about other people beliefs if your beliefs are conflicting their beliefs ! because you are going to put your opinion and you are not going to be explicit and fair !
The catastrophe ! :) , when someone talk about other countries with a bunch of fake facts, mislead and ignorance from his bags. And he is trying to hide and forget the corruption, homelessness, taxes and the lack of medical insurance for people, racism, civil wars and economic and livelihood problems ... etc. in his country :) ? there is a big question mark (?) :) .
I don't want to add more in my words. All what I want to say that we respect who respects us. Also, anyone who wants to know about us is welcome at any time at any place.
Finally, In the quran, god said :
      " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ "
      which means literally :
" O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). " Hucurat 49/13
Peace and Respect Thank you ;)

Just let them be. Every individual and individual society and nation can exist the way they wanna exist. Just like western viewpoint is one among many, Arab viewpoint is one among many. No viewpoint is good or bad or better or worse. If your viewpoint about Arab is not good in your viewpoint, Arab viewpoint about west is also not good in their viewpoint. They wanna live like that let them. Just like you don't want any intervention in your way of life, so don't they. They're okay with you living your lives as you want, you should reciprocate the same for them.

One of the main point was not discussed about the transition of power from the present King to next. Can the power struggle ensue with in the Royal family if the actions of present second in line Prince are not fathomable to rest of the members of the Royal family? what id Iran adopts a policy to fight Saudi Arabia through her proxies? How will the effect of slow bleeding be handeled by Royal family? Is there a possibility of rift erupting with in thw Royal family? If this comes to realization, what will geography of middle east look like. Can this also lead to break up of Saudi Arabia into oil producing part and rest of goes to managing the religious sites of Mecca and Madina? The worst case scenario will be middle east goes into all out sectarian violence which can also pull citizens of other Islamic nations into the war although they may be volunteers mujaheedeen fighters to defend the holy place. The information provided is not new but never the less it was presented in a very profeßional way and Q&A must have helped the viewers. For some reason I have this question about West led by USA might switch the side and allign with much more tolerant and educated country such as Iran, Iraq and Syria.

Mukrin didn't accept succession because plans for Yemen invasion were already being laid out and he wanted no part in such conflict, perhaps. And what Arab Spring us he talking about? Nothing changed with the so-called Arab Spring.. Saudi not only has top military equipment, it has world's best big data spy equipment from Denmark/UK. Mix that with the fact they have Chop-Chop Square (Public Executions), and you can see how the speaker misses some major points as to discussion of democracy and reason Syrians prefer Assad, even, over Saudia.

    • @alanconlan8337
      @alanconlan8337 4 роки тому

True, but the real purpose of the Arab Spring, a CIA operation, was to destroy the peace, trade and prosperity spreading across North West Africa led by Colonial Gaddafi's initiatives. This could not be allowed by the corrupted Western powers so Llbya was mercilessly destroyed.

    • @alanconlan8337
      @alanconlan8337 4 роки тому

To put everyone in the picture, the Arab Spring was a CIA operation controlled by the British Establishment and France. It's purpose was to break up Magrib, the economic alliance between North African countries piloted by Colonial Ghadaffi promoting better values and living standards for the people of these countries. This was viewed as a threat to the EU, UK and US powerbase. Clearance for the CIA's covert activities was given clearance by Obama and Hillary Clinton knowingly speakheaded the destruction of Libya for the Deep State, aka British Establishment. This makes her a war criminal, but still being sheltered from the truth by the spinning false narratives.

As a Muslim and a citizen of America, I am ashamed of you giving an absolute wrong image to Shias GOD. As a Sunni practicing Muslim Shias are the same among Muslims as Baptists, Protestants, Lutherns etc BUT not Mormons or Jehova Witness among Christians. For all the Muslims follow the 4 major Imams Wahabis are misguided as well as Shias but unfortunately, Wahabis have captured the Holy places with the help of their British and American Masters. Dear viewers and listeners please make a note of my explanation. Remember Mr.Ridel does not know about Islam. Ask a Muslim in "free Muslim World" but not from a Saudi, Emarati, Bahraini.etc.

  • @craigkdillon

Interesting. But, I want to see a discussion about the long term pressures and trends that is impacting Saudi Arabia.
First - oil is now known to be a common resource with huge fields on the continental shelves around the world. Oil prices will likely not recover - ever.
Secondly, oil is losing its status as a strategic resource. In 30 to 50 years most electricity will be sourced from renewable energy, and cars fueled by that electricity. Oil will lose its function as the driver of economies.
Thirdly, with the loss of oil as a strategic resource, the rest of the world will stop caring what goes on there. If there is revolution or violence, it may be of some interest, but no one will really care. Similarly, when there was disruption in Columbia, or Seychelles, or Yemen, the world did not, does not, care. There will be no Desert Shield or Desert Storm to rescue a future Saudi Arabia emergency. Not yet, but I believe that will happen in a few decades.
Fourthly, I believe there are great pressures for social change in Saudi Arabia. In history, I have noticed that when a country recognizes the need for change, they rarely get the pace or style of change correct enough to prevent wholesale change.
For instance, need for change was finally recognized in both the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires, yet both were swept away.
I think the Saudi Monarchy will not survive the next 20 years. It may, but I doubt it. I would like to see a discussion on these broader trends.

I enjoyed this lecture I used to live in Saudi Arabia. He is right lots of wahabbis don't want admit the theological mistakes in their definition of " Tawhid " . The Tawhid in their definition is divided in two parts.
The Tawhid of God as the sole Lord and the Tawhid of God as the only one deserving worship. With this simple definition they feel that theological tracts are the only legitamate source of knowing the unification of God as the one who deserve the worship.THEY claim that they are the only group in the history of Islam that achieved this goal because in their theology the first part was established. They explained with simple definition
That they are the only true, pure Which is monotheists which is not true Lots of Wahabbis now gave up this definition.
They are joining a more inclusive definition of Islamic theology as if the rise of the internet and satellite TV helped deplete their brainwashed base. Wahabbis now are a small faction. Their dogmatic books need to be contextualized, enlightened and histrocized.

It seems to me that the dynastic politics and struggles in SA are as pointless to analyze as were the dynastic machinations of the Ottoman Empire before WW1. Struggle as they may, they are in decline, and will soon be gone.
Now "soon" is a relative term. Ottoman Empire was the sick man of Europe for a century before it caved in. So, I do not mean to imply that the Saudi dynasty will end now. But, in a few decades.
Besides all the other pressures, remember that the Saudi Monarchy was established to control a country of only a few million. Now it is a country of many millions. A more sophisticated flexible resilient form of government is needed - like a democracy, or republic, or at least a constitutional monarchy.
Of course, that can be said for every country in the Middle East.

Mr.Riddel, You don't know your facts. Let me explain to the viewers. I am a Sunni ( Hanafi) who strictly follow the anti-Shia faith.
I (as other Sunnis) consider Shia about 50% misguided. But you are telling that as you said in this speech " shias give Ali the position as important as to be worshipped" Totally false and wrong. The difference between Sias and Sunnis is about "Imamat" It means who will be the spiritual leader of Muslims after Prophet Muhammad." peace be upon him" . Apparently another action arising out of the fear of a military coupe is that the Saudi royals foot soldiers are Pakistani mercenaries.
While this greatly reduces the risk of a military coupe it means the motivation of their foot soldiers is very low. Hence, the Yemeni army beat the Saudi (Pakistani mercenaries) who surrendered because they were not fighting for Pakistan.

I wonder, what role does the US shale oil industry play in the order of Middle East...
In the old times, the US and the UK needed just enough chaos in the Middle East that their defence industry could benefit in arm sales but not too much chaos that disrupted oil production would negatively impact their economies with a high oil price, or that would encourage global terrorism.
Now that the US is more energy independent and could very well become an exporter, wouldn't a chaotic Middle East mean more revenue from arm sales and less trouble from nuclear countries like Iran (for the US)? I cannot help but wonder about the premises on which the US build its belief that a multipolar Middle East is more stable than a hegemony under the Saudis.

If Saudia Arabia did not have petrol, nobody will care. The only other matter that matters is that without Saudia Arabia selling its oil using petrodollars, the American dollar will collapse before you can blink, which is the reason why "only" al-Saud can wield power being protected by the Americans government, a fact which he decided to overlook. Another skimming is the fact that the princes killed and murdered each other to get to the throne.
As for Mecca, the Shia have fatwas that visiting Imam Hussian (son of Ali who was martyred) shrine is as good as visiting Mecca.
The oil "crises" was precipitated by them as a way to bankrupt Russia, Iran and Venezuela but eventually backfiring in their face because their coffers ran empty to the fact that they had to borrow $100 billion dollars recently. Their stunt in Yemen has failed against a ramshackle army, they had to ask the Egyptians and the Pakistanis to come and do their fighting, how they intend to fight Iran who has an origanised army is difficult to fathom? Al-Saud are the source of terrorism, they came into power terrorising and murdering whoever stood in their way using Wahabi fanatics so much so that ibn Saud himself decided, in the end, to eliminate them all because of their atrocities. They hated Saddam, no love lost to him, to the point of exposing their backside to whoever can get rid of him because he understood exactly who they were, now they are doing the same in Syria because long ago, the British-french shafted them and denied them Syria. No harm in trying again with the help of 'U NO who' because "the poor people of Syria are being killed and tortured by a dictator that does not give a hoop about human right", just as much as the Saudis care about the catastrophe in Yemen because they want to restore democracy in the country and place someone to dance for their tune.
Yah looks how good is MBS is, he let women drive while hundreds of thousands if not millions of people are dying, starving and homeless. Let's open the champagne bottles for him.

How can all Muslims love the same one God called Allah are killing one another? I asked this question from the Muftis to the man praying facing Mecca. No cares to reply? Few said is Allah's will. Before oil was developed by the Americans with the help of Britain, Persian the whole of Middle East Arabia and the Muslims in Africa lived in peace side by with non-Muslims. Nobody heard of Jihad before the oil for US dollars were handed to the Arabs. Before oil was exported the whole of Arabia, including Saudi Arabia was just a sandy village. The Arabs were nomads, moved on camels to trade and for new pastures for hundreds of years. When the oil money came pouring in millions from USA, all the Nomads Arabs praised Allah to help Islam to dominate the world under Caliphate. All the Muslim leaders demanded to Arabia that the oil wealth to distributed to build mosque and schools to promote in every country on earth. Ever since oil was found there is no peace in the Muslim world. Jesus was right when he told 2000 years back, "Money is the Root of all evil." His prediction has come true. Once there are no buyers for oil, that will be the end of Islam and its followers. What goes up, always come down to crash into dust.

I think Suadi will think of ways to generate other ways of making money. i think The U.K will help and be great partners with the Saudis in inovation and investment in renewable energies and oil wells will be replaced by wind turbines and solor pannels. tourism will increase for the Gracious Saudis and may be even agriculture in the desert will take place i just hope the loving blessed Saudis will adopt some more of our Western ways and increasingly relax the laws on females. I think the Loving Saudis will enjoy eternaldom but will have to allow the flow of evolution in tearms of inovation, laws, we jus need a decent succsesion of two kings or princess that addopt Western ways but retain their Glorious devotlion to God, Mecca and Islam, Medina. The Prophet Mohammed, Praise be upon Him. Instructs us to worship One God and rightfuly so, there are many Gods, in the Hindu pantheon there are 85 million Gods know as Demi Gods all doing their various tasks in keeping the whole of creation going untill every thing falls back into equilibrium, Lord Brahma being the one God, in the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krisna is The One God, now God has been kind and Gracious in allowng and giving us many different names descriptions and Prophets and stories for all the Varied people personalities and Countries of the world for our understanding and diciplunes. God has been so kind we can even live a life of being an athiest if we so belive and this discipline is called Bhudisim. See God is so kind he has gave us all these options to live a life of piouty depending on the living personality. But..But evolution has to happen, devolpment has to take place now i think the Saudis will become one of the most advanced and Glorious places in the middle East, of course, they will be pious Western friendly. We just need that two, maybe, succsesion of decent kings or princess the current one incuded.
