Sweet deck, but it keeps me thinking on how awesome it would be to see Phil in a cEDH match. Hopefully some sort of colab or just straight up Thraben U cEDH games are on the horizon
@ 16:09 I was thinking the exact same thing. Tide Hollow Sculler also seems pretty mediocre if you aren't using it as a way to pitch cast grief and solitude.
Love that you love the 'Sword Of' cycle. I remember the Legacy Faeries/Sword of Feast & Famine days with fondness, and still make considerations for a Swords or two in most of my EDH decks (basically, my "fun of" card)...
I think Kaya's Guile might be a nice addition to the deck. Removes graveyards so helps when trimming the bog, makes evasive bodies to connect with gix & the swords, gains life to mitigate the life loss by seizes & Bob... and well, another removal included.
Just reiterating, as I do every time I see it, that I don’t think tidehollow sculler is remotely playable anymore. Not in this deck, not in scam decks. Its just bad.
Agree. Combo decks are often too fast to care and often don’t collapse to only 1-2 points of interaction; fair decks can generally just kill it and be on their merry way. Even if you can Ephemerate it, it’s far worse than Grief, taking only one card forever instead of three. I can perhaps conceive of an Esper Vial deck that defends it with Force or a WB Chalice deck that can blank removal in order to strand cards for longer while pressuring the life total, but 2 points of power just isn’t enough in current MTG to justify the effort.
I think it might be fine if you made the side grade to play this in modern since this is like, 8 cards away from being legal in modern. Good in modern? Idk, I'm not a meta analyst.
yeah I love Sculler but he's been surpassed by now. Cards like Elite Spellbinder and Anointed Peacekeeper are simply superior, even while costing more.
The Japanese deck author's name sounds roughly like ono-ey yo-hey. This name has a lot of long vowels - ou and ei represent long o or e sounds, not sound changes. Japanese syllables have very consistent length, so a long vs short sound can have different meanings. English syllables are less consistent, so I wouldn't worry about the length of the syllable if you're talking about the deck author's name in English anyway. Japanese's set of sounds is almost a subset of sounds you can make in English, so you only need to remember a few rules to get it right most of the time 1) letters don't affect the sound of the letter next to them. moe (a specific kind of cuteness) is pronounced mo-ey, not like the bartender from the simpsons. 2) other than tsu, all syllables in Japanese are one-letter vowel only sounds or two-letter vowel consonant pairs. If you take it one consonant at a time, you'll be able to read it well enough. Daigaku (college) can be read basically Da-i-ga-ku or Dai-ga-ku, as the letters don't affect each other's sounds. If you shuffled the parts of daigaku into say, ikugada(not a word, just an example), each bit would be pronounced the same 3) there's no -ou sound in Japanese, sound would be spelled sa-un-do. 4) (optional) a is pronounced like the attack, i is pronounced like see, u is pronounced like winnie the pooh, e is pronounced like hey, o is pronounced like ghost I'm not fluent so grain of salt and all that but you'll do better than most people trying to pronounce Japanese-origin words
Like this deck conceptually! Would love to see a more try-hard version of this. I played something similar in Modern, and I think there's room for a Orzhov tempo deck in the spirit of dead-guy ale in legacy. Unfortunately, it probably needs to run an initiative card or two, pitch elementals, and some Ephemerates, which makes it as much a BW version of initiative as an updated dead-guy ale.
After just watching the deck tech, i must say this deck rubs me exactly the right way! Hope it does well. Also, on the changes you made from the og : i've noticed too that people run incredibly cutthroat land packages without being ever punished. When i used to play in tournaments,if i ever run something fancy, i would never play a spell ever XD EDIT: yeah the delver matchup doesn't feel the best
Deadguy Ale my beloved! a bit surprised at the lack of dark ritual here, especially with gix, but i have got to take this one for a spin. i don't even care if it's good, resolving tidehollow sculler is its own dopamine rush
I am so hilariously in love with Sword of War and Peace. It's so slow for this format but everytime I see that trigger go on the stack it gives me the warm fuzzies inside.
Dauthi doesn't hit the grave before the spell resolves. State based actions are not checked mid-resolution, so dauthi exiles removal spells used on it or creatures it trades with.
I'm honestly tempted to splash a Starscream or 2 in this style of deck, just because he's an additional source of chip damage when you're the Monarch. He's probably loads better in a RedGuy variant with Queen Marchesa (and I may shift to that), but I just kinda wanna have some fun with it.
I really feel like this deck still wants Dark Ritual. You get so much velocity being able to t1 thoughtseize + two drop or t2 kick tourach. It may be bad with all the Chalice's running around, but the ceiling on the card is really high. I'll have to try the list -3 tidehollow and -1 emperor or verse. I may also cut the other verse/emperor for chrome mox.
Regarding the name - Onoue Youhei or 尾上洋平 - You should be able to put that in Google Translate under Japanese and hit "Listen" - But basically, "Oh no oo (As in moo) eh (as in way) Yo heh (as in head)" - Though he might prefer "Yo Hey" depending where he is from.
Didn't really think about how strong Trespasser's ward ability could potentially be in legacy. It's a 2 for 1 minimum, the ability to eat things out of the graveyard seems real good w/ DRC and murktide running around too.
Have you and Brian BoshNRoll ever done a head-to-head league? I know he's done the head to heads with some other creators. I'd love to watch many many videos like that
I was just wondering how Dead Guy Ale would look like in 2023, so this was a good watch. Still, with the amount of interaction legacy has now I feel like Tidehollow Sculler is just bad
I feel the issue with Gix is that very rarely are you going to hit 7 mana for the ability, if you do the game is likely over anyway. Gix is such a cool card but effectively becomes a draw engine.
Deck feels like it's pulled in too many directions and suffers for it. Gix seems like a lot of fun but it feels like you don't have the creature density to really make great use of it - stuff like Bitterblossom or Lingering Souls might complement that better. Dark Confidant with that curve, especially with 5+7 in your Stoneforge package, seems like a questionable choice. Lot of stuff that feels like it's just too slow/fair for today's Legacy like Sculler and Confidant, feels like you need to hit the ground running with like pitch elementals or something. At least it does look like fun.
It was certainly fun, but the "polish" of the deck felt not quite there. It needed a bit more mana, for example, and could have leaned in harder to synergy.
Jitte is banned and Swords to Plowshares has never been printed into Modern (obviously Scrubland too), but otherwise it is all Modern legal. The original list also had a bunch of Wastelands, but those aren't represented in this tweaked version.
Whenever Phil is cold and using his blanket, the deck is going to be fire
Sweet deck, but it keeps me thinking on how awesome it would be to see Phil in a cEDH match. Hopefully some sort of colab or just straight up Thraben U cEDH games are on the horizon
100% will happen at some point.

I found a home for Sword of Hearth and Home in my Preston EDH deck and was very happy about it.
@@ThrabenUniversity I love it. I celebrate it.

"My knowledge of legacy just saved by butt." lol nice
good boy, sword of war and peace, good boy!
I am so hilariously in love with Sword of War and Peace. It's so slow for this format but everytime I see that trigger go on the stack it gives me the warm fuzzies inside.
Put it on a Mirran Crusader to really feel something!
@@ThrabenUniversity I remember these ancient texts
"Tidehollow Sculler: probably not keeping up with FIRE design"
-Phil, after getting 2 for 1'd by a card older than Sculler by a significant margin
Besides the relevant protections, what I like most about SWP is how fast it finishes the game
Yeah, it does NOT F around.
Great video!
6:57 Why was the Unholy Heat exiled after killing the Dauthi, shouldn't it go to grave, since Dauthi hits the grave before the spell resolves.

I'm very skeptical that that card is good enough for Legacy.
@@ThrabenUniversity you're probably right, but I can't help but want to try.
not for nothing but what about blue does makes it deserve a flying 3/2 for 1 ?
I do miss the minor bit of acceleration that the deck used to run, but this build looks cool as hell and I'm excited to see how well it goes!
This deck either needed a few more mana sources or some acceleration. So I feel that.
in the current meta would that 1/1 changing that can't be blocked be good
In a shell that supports it (e.g. Ninjas), yeah! In a deck like this? Probably not.
it also looked like contagion might have been ok 👍 at points in this game
This deck would pair nicely with Grief, Solitude, and Ephemerate.

Rit isn’t a bad choice, by any means. I think I’d prefer a stickier mana source like Mox as a deck that has to play control against Initiative, though
@@alecwoodard9464 That's a good point.
Yeah, the deck needs more mana in some way.
The name pronunciation was pretty dang close. I believe the last name is said "Yo oo hey"

It's a hard that I'll have on my "brewer's radar" moving forward.
How well do you think this could be translated over to modern? Seems like nearly all the cards are modern legal
Swords and jitte seem to be all that isnt legal.
Very easily.
This is my only complete legacy deck in paper, and Tidehollow Sculler has been miserable for me also.
Yup, I think it needs to go!

I was just wondering how Dead Guy Ale would look like in 2023, so this was a good watch. Still, with the amount of interaction legacy has now I feel like Tidehollow Sculler is just bad
I think zealous persecution would be nice in these fair matchups
That's a classic!
I feel the issue with Gix is that very rarely are you going to hit 7 mana for the ability, if you do the game is likely over anyway. Gix is such a cool card but effectively becomes a draw engine.
Yeah, I don't view that final ability as existing within the context of Legacy. It's flavor text that might be relevant once every 100 games.
