The closest analogy to modular is putting together your own pc from parts. You get all the components you need, and plug them in to a power supply in a case. Maybe down the road you decide to add a component, or upgrade, it’s easy to swap out.
Synthesis is not the automation of sound (4:05 in the video). Now, to be fair, you did specify immediately after that proper synthesizers did not appear until the end of the 1800's, when electronic sound generation became a reality with the Telharmonium. Very well said. But the word "synthesis" itself means "to put together", and that is in fact what these instruments allow us to do: to put sounds together, to create sounds by controlling and combining all of their individual elements. And that's the definition of synthesizer: an electronic musical instrument that allows the user to author timbre. I know, I know, it's one big nitpick haha. But you know, even just finding out about the etymology of a word can shed some new light on how we see certain things, or on how we approach them.
As a guy making with sequencers and synths I surely don’t adhere the “honest handmade” and “unplugged shows real skill” BS. And as a FM owner I don’t believe that true analog is better. But…. No matter what gear you use… have fun and experiment.
I can’t believe I could tolerate just over 3 minutes of the jump/cut style of editing employed in the production of this clip. It feels clumsy and it wrecks any ‘flow’ that it began with.
