Merzow once said "I abhor meaning." Advertising and whining and light conversation are the real noise. This is an antidote to all that.

As a musician, I've been looking to inform myself with all sorts of different kinds of music. I've loved every different genre, until I managed to stumble upon Merzbow by chance. I respect the composer(s), because well, they took the time to make this music. But of all of the genre's I've ever heard, this is by far the most frightening. I guess that's okay, as the point of music is to convey emotion. But this is something else. When my mom used to tell me that stuff like "grindcore" wasn't music, I'd assure it that it was. I would back this genre up if she made that claim here, but I would have a much harder time doing it. It's almost as if these songs are unintentional -- that they exist on accident. While I can't bear to listen to it any longer, it's is quite intriguing to get inside the minds of the people who enjoy it. Could someone leave me a reply telling me what they like about noise music like this?

I can't speak for everyone when it comes to a reason for enjoying noise music, as I've heard plenty of explanations that go so far as to make it into a kind of nihilistic ultimate form of music due to the pointlessness of such standard traditions as "melody" but quite frankly I don't buy it. That's the kind of explanation you'll get from someone who cannot stand traditional music and can only listen to noise. As a fan of all forms of music, I can say that I enjoy noise, specifically this album, and even more specifically the first track, for the intensity of the sounds, the sound design, and the progression (specifically the first track) from light hissing at the beginning to the overwhelming wall of sound near the end. In a larger sense, the album as a whole progresses in a similar way, from the light accessibility (I use that term as loosely as possible) of the first track to the harshness of the second, the confusion and fear in the third, and the overwhelming intensity of the final 30 minutes or so.
If you are willing to call noise "music" than you would probably understand that asking why people like noise has as wide a variety of answers as asking people why they like rap or drone or country or pop or metal. It's all music, it's all subjective, it's all very very personal.

I understand your vew on noise, and I agree with you.I also thank you for you open mindedness in not calling something you dont enjoy trash. To tell you the truth I dont really classify it as music my self, more sounds to convey feeling though I can tell you why I listen to it but I assure you everyone reason will be different. I listen to it because I hat my self, and though this I try to sort trough my own mess to find a reason for my existence, it helps me see clearly in a way. and also helps me escape the dark parts of my mind for a while, thats me at least.

It´s strange how noise music affects differently everyone. In my case is some kind of mental freedom that I achieve through the unthinkable structure of sound beating my brain. Is like something that surpass my analytic abilities and then drown me into unconsciouss. I listen to a lot of progressive rock, hard rock, jazz, and to be honest I think I´m used to overanalyze music since I´m musician and philosopher, I mean, I feel music but I know more or less always whats going on in terms of music structure, noise music is just too much to be analyzed in those terms although Merzbow knows he´s not building randomly, he knows perfectly whats going on next, and that´s pretty impressive after all. So I think it works as an irrational power to free the power of pure sound above all, where timber meets organic growing.

I listen to noise to expose myself to sounds that I don't get to hear often, or in everyday life and music. I, myself can't listen to it for TOO long, but every once and a while I feel the need to get it out of my system.

So basically, he's arranging various tones and sounds with musical intent. It's music. You may not hear it as music, but some do. We perceive music differently. It's nothing to do with some kind of elitist psuedo-intellectual mindset. I just happen to particularly appreciate some of Masami's works. Their sounds that I like at an extreme variation. If you're interested, check out the history behind noise music itself. It's very detailed and helps explains some of the confusion you may have.

You might want to consider a different way of listening. This music is not concerned with the typical parameters of music like melody, harmony, and rhythmic periodicity. Instead, it's concerned purely with specific musical elements like timbre (the quality of a sound), texture (the compositional layering of various sounds), & spatialization (the direction and distance from which you experience these sounds). In the case of Merzbow, the result is particularly visceral and intense [no space left]

I've had plenty of similar experiences with music before, as songs that initially just sounded like "noise" began to leave a more musical impression with each listen. It's just that this is so extreme and abstract that I can't help but be sceptical about it. Some people surely do like it, but when it comes to this type of music, I sometimes hear a piece and wonder if it's even possible for a human being to enjoy it.

I have to say I really have enjoyed this so far
I heard merzbow a long time ago but heard a different sound from him it was a track where there were two beats going on and everytime it seemed like they were going to come together and actually make a melody they would restart and end up not ever making music just sound that almost came together it was interesting and what I think I have liked about this so far is it is so intrusive it makes me zone out which helps me cope with my anxiety and I find it interesting
I don't think I could listen to it all the time because I enjoy music too much
    All types
Jazz, grindcore, hip-hop- techno, classic rock, classical,
Math rock though is still my all time favorite genre

Discogs lists 1980 as the year of Merzbow's release. 33 years later, people are still arguing. I question whether there could even be an understanding between the people who hear this style for the first time, and those who've been into this (and probably many other alternative things) for more than 30 decades.

Sure, you can use some argument of analogies but that doesn't stray away that Merzbow's creative output isn't music. His process of making this music is pretty cool, actually. He uses various pedals, samplers, synthesizers, built patches within Max/MSP (I'm presuming that's what he used because later in his career he started incorporating software into his music) and his own little piece of metal strapped on to him that's used like a guitar. Check out some live videos, you'll see what I mean.

if one is willing to accept that the ambient sounds of an auditorium over a 4 minute 33 second interval is music, which i do btw, then the soundscape crafted by merzbow for 49 minutes 39 seconds is music as well. you don't have to like it or even appreciate it but simply declaring "this isn't music" does not mean it isn't.

"Avant-Garde" doesn't actually specify what something sounds like, so it neither appeals nor alienates anyone. You're completely right that I'm a metal-head, but there is plenty of metal or metal related music which is similarly abstract when compared to something such as this, or other non metal related music which I'm interested in that does. For instance, I enjoy Sunn 0))) and even Boris, who have collaborated with Merzbow. Who knows? Maybe I'll hear this again in a few years and like it.

If you like this check out a band called Mudsuckers. Apparently they don't exist on youtube at all, but I'm sure you can find them elsewhere on the interwebs. Stylistically similar to Merzbow, but better, I think.
