Card machines are like every technology, they can break down. One friend of mine put her card into a ATM and then suddenly there was a power cut. Her card stuck in the machine and no power. When the power returned 30 minutes later, the card wouldn't come out of the machine, and luckily one of the shop assistants had access to the machine, opened it and looked for her ID card to make sure she was who she said she was, and got her card back. 30 minutes of utter hell in a small town in County Donegal in Ireland for her.
