Blake Stone was a game I played for hours. I was a recent high school grad. Buying a game was an investment. The budget for games was very small. So playing a game over and over to find secrets just meant more bang for the gaming buck.
That's why that game, or the Dark Forces titles, or TIE Fighter were solid choices. God only knows how many hours I spent replaying missions to accomplish the Secret Order objectives. Wouldn't you know it? Last week I found out there were cheat codes for TIE Fighter.

And look how spoiled we're today. I've more games than I could ever play. Granted most were purchased on various promotions, through special offers or in bundles, but still, times have changed. xD

@@OldAndNewVideoGames I definitely will. I was trying to remember the odd sound the first, silent gun made when you used it. It has been years, so I dare say I've forgotten most of it. Graphically, it isn't all that dissimilar from Dark Forces.
That's a habit of mine. I'll not touch a game I enjoy for years so I can look at it semi-fresh again. Haven't played Skyrim in 8 years for that reason.

Alpha Storm was an absolute gem; I spent more than a decade finding a working version after seeing a review in a magazine and becoming enamoured with the idea :) It's one of those one-of-a-kind games that nobody really tried to follow up on.
Only two of those I haven't seen before; I guess that means the FPS market was a lot sparser with good unknown games :D

WW2GI was actually sold as the sequel to N.A.M., another Build Engine FPS, though, obviously, it should be prequel, since WW2 happened before the Vietnam War. But it's not even a prequel, because you're playing as a different character. Anyway, NAM is difficult, but plays much more straightforwardly, there's no "morale", at least, as far as I know, and a lot of people complain that it's unfair, because enemies tend to spawn out of nowhere at all times, and there are traps and explosions everywhere, so you die cheap deaths. True that may be, but it's kinda authentic, no? Hehe. Also, I remember seeing a total conversion mod for Duke 3D that put you in the shoes of an American soldier in Iraq. Don't know who made it, but I imagine someone was a fan of NAM or WW2GI.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Місяць тому

On the plus side, no enemies spawn randomly in WW2GI, but the difficulty is something else. At least when compared to most other Build-engine games. xD

Great video, as always! You keep finding cool games for each genre. I like that some of them have a bit of other game types mixed in and often a story.
I've heard of Blake Stone before and I keep thinking it has a certain appeal for me and that it's too bad I didn't play this instead of Wolfenstein 3D as a kid.
I really like the story about the bank account items in Witchaven. :D Also, it looks like you've got an endless supply of pike axes to throw at enemies who seem to just not want to sit still long enough to get hit. XD
Wolfendoom... wow, I had no idea this thing existed. :D Did I miss a story point? I don't see you shooting any hellspawn, just a lot of marines...

i can immediately answer that initial question: NOPE, nowhere near close even.
(justification being: KKnD, Earth 2140, or for shooters tekwar, blake stone - all four games being very simillar to the leaders of the genre but all of them falling quite short in many ways. sure i may like half of them but i recognize that they are considerably weaker take on genre than c&c or strife (okay thats barely FPS genre, more adventure doom so maybe rise of the triad).) . but i do concieve that there are quite decent games even on the undercard its just that they are drowned out by likes of capstone.
(corporation) that is one perk of pre - ID first person shooters (and ones that went their own original way) detached aiming crosshair DOSE sound like an interesting idea allbeit overly complicated to control (hence it not being used in the aforementioned stellar games by ID).
shame it is not on GoG for i would've loved to play it myself it has certain appeal to me as someone who barely remembers that era of gaming and was getting computer year after its release i would have likely loved it.
(thermixator 2029) before they hired the greasy randy eh? also this dose sound like it laid foundation for their remarkable future shock and Skynet ... and not just by the way of licencing either. interesting.
ouf that bad part completly caught me unaware. yeah that would cause major problems gameplay wise for me.
(Blake Stone) i do happen to be amidst playing blake stone dulogy and at least one of them has mandatory secret in one of their levels :/ you have to find a slidey wall to get to lazer barrier off switch.
Some of the enemies are still breathtaking visualy tho, given that i did play wolf 3d i thought i knew limitations of the tech but those water enemies and energy ball ones are great. sure roster is relatively limited but most enemies look quite desinct and that is very good point in game's favour.
There is alas only like one good song in the game :/ i guess they had yet to master how to do it realy well. (appogee i mean so they did realy well in Duke3D)
Other than that it is still bit too heavy on maze dessign (yes i know thats due to Wolf engine, all games on it had that problem stemming from limitations of the technology leading to limitations of enviroment). decent action, decent storyline and good enough reward keep me playing the game series tho so i do recommand everyone who dose want to see Wolf 3d engine used well goes and gets rise of the triads... it is far better game in every single way .) only get Blake if your tolerance for this particular era of shooters has been previously trained or if you grew up with them. you would otherwise not leave satisfied camper.
(witchaven) i am long term contemplating weather to or not get the Witchaven bundle. on one hand it is capstone but on the other these are probably their best games.
there are a lot of bad things that capstone did and while it was long time ago i am not very forgiving person. anyone hexing gaming world with Tekwar must be scroutenied heavitly. i expect to eventualy give in (like i did when getting what i think is driver 5 - paraller lines).
(GI) interesting so this was just before the wave of world war 2 shooters hit the scene? and on dos? i had no idea this existed but the huge arsenal promised dose sound appealing even to me in spite of never being into WWII that much.

Yup, you go it right. At least when it comes to FPSes. B-listers could not hold the candle to triple-A stuff. But, it doesn't mean that some of the games were not playable and fun. They were, just not as much. xD

@@OldAndNewVideoGames i do concur with an opinion i have heard in someone's video - you do not need to revolutionise the entire space to make something worth while. If everything is end of the world stakes than nothing particularly stands out. doing good game with solid mechanics well has its own appeal, and should in fact be the expected default from any new game.
      (almost certain i para phrased)
but yes i agree with you agreeing with wholy disagreeable nameless fella .P
No game is perfect and doing good game well is infact something that we are lacking.
AAA games dissapeared up their own rectum years ... decades in some cases ago.
AA games (new blood, NightDive - quality products for great prices) are basicaly my personal default AAA , because they actualy do care about customer and lay in oodles of quality touches. and i adore them for bringing back many amazing games for idiot like myself.
A games are usualy indie teams or individuals - strong singular vission and focused development of the main pulls (possibly undertale and such its fantastic but noticably not that huge in scope or team, meaning even smaller budget and even nicer price range)
      - interjection if you could play the "is your battery big enough" video to see what i did above that' be good .) altho i did it in reverse because i am backwards -
i would love it if focus of game development was on AA and A titles. i think that way we would get most interesting cross section of creative's vission and quality, and hopefully grant those making games enough financial levy to make a decent living as under AAA(A) they are basicaly enslaved. and since they do bring me a lot of joy with their games i do think it would be good time to go for that niche market.
Than again i do remember that something simillar was happening in 90s and not only it fizzled out but in most devastating way for those of us who care about burrying the corporate crap under concrete slab. SHAMEFUL that SME, UMG etc. survived the MP3 rise.

I love Blake Stone. It holds up pretty well for an old FPS even today, and did certain things better than Doom. Its main problem was that it came out just before Doom (like a week or so) and got overshadowed. A shame, because had things been just a bit different, maybe today we'd have had Blake Stone Eternal instead.

you know that Night Dive did few very interesting game remasters, not just the obvious ones but they also did powerslave (and not too long ago dark forces 1).
maybe we CAN get Kex engined blake stone duology who knows.
I do agree that it is quite remarkable game and much like my beloved, similarly afflicted, rise of the triad (the original not the 2'013 remake ... also remastered relatively recent hmmm). what i am pointing out is that there are few issues with it that do scare off more modern gamers no doubt. and few problems i have with it that are likely down to me being... me.

I tested PCEM17 for emulation of DOS and Windows 98 games. Its far superior to DOSBOX emulators, because its a hardware emulator. Games look as on real machines. DOSBOX distorts them. FPS is much more consistent then on DOSBOX. Only drawback is you need a strong CPU, Ryzen Zen 2 core minimum. I have 3500X and it can emulate a Pentium 1 on 200 Mhz, a bit more in DOS. DOSBOX distorts the video output. When you putting all this effort to make this try PCEM it looks so much better, and it supports MIDI output directly to MUNT in Windows host. It also supports .vhd virtual disc which you can mount directly trough disk managment in Windows, Its fantastic and super convenient. I even managed to use Sound Blaster AWE32 with custom vawe sound fonts with onboard memory.

@@TeaAndTankControls Its difficult to explain, you have to see it. First big thing is FPS jumping all over in DOSBOX. PCEM17 is stable. Second thing as you change video cards you get different output. DOSBOX very often has kind of cardboard appearance, screen tearing, latency. It has some strange lack of graphics effects compared to PCEM. Emulation is not exact. PCEM17 does no software emulation, it emulates hardware. I just played Quake 1 "GLquake" with voodoo 3, shadows look different on PCEM, color composition and texture sharpness too, latency is fantastic. When i try DOSBOX it does not look like on real machine for me. PCEM triggers that "wow this looks good" i had when i first saw it on real hardware.
