I’m on my second. I can tell you there are SO many subtle differences. My first was male, 150 pounds. Very dry mouth for a Mastiff. Protective. Had to neuter. My current boy is Massive. Slobbers like crazy. Sheds tons.. most gentle dog ever. Did not need to neuter. They are a lot of work.. plan for future vet bills.. you cannot leave them alone all day! My first cost 2000. The one I have now is show quality and cost 5000. You get what you pay for..
I own what I consider the perfect specimen. He’s a fit and trim 30” tall, 155 # and not an once of fat on him. I see others Mastiffs that are bigger and fatter for no other reason than people bragging about how big he is. Mind can gallop around the yard and exhibit a playful side. His personality is just perfect, strong, confident very undisturbed by other dogs, yet a little wary of stranger but quick warm up to them if I give him a green light. He’s very loving and wants to be at my side most all of the day and night. I see another in my future.
I miss my Zeus - English Mastiff. ❤ if I had the space I would have another one. They are amazing dogs. My best advice is that you have to assert yourself as the Alpha early and consistently with such a big dog. Zeus could knock me over by just leaning into me lol but he knew who was the boss. Gosh I miss that drooling fart bomb.
I’ve owed two.. You don’t train them. You negotiate. Land Manatee comes to mind.. My dog is the most gentle easy going dog I’ve ever had. Not sure about the guard thing.. I catch my mastiff watching possums eat his food all the time. He knows he’s a rock star.. I’ve taken him to local outdoor events.. He gets swarmed by people… Except from India… I think they think he’s a lion? 33 inches at the shoulder. 227 pounds.. I did not spade him. I think it’s unnecessary for most Massifs.. I don’t think he would wake up for anything except food and pooping if he had been cut. Plus they tend to get fat when cut.. you can’t bully a Mastiff into a walk.. if they lay down midway through? You are in BIG trouble.
Love my brindle mastiff Jolene! She’s a sweetheart but is always on watch. More of an alert and intimidator than a guard dog.
