@@theshire9173I honestly think a big part of it, besides the internet making connecting with other hobbyers so much easier, is our maximalist tendencies. We own a lot more things, tend to decorate more individually, and marketers see that as a way to sell you more merchandise! There’s a lot more stuff available to purchase for more casual enjoyers, I remember in high school anime and “nerdy” stuff was sold almost only at places like hot topic or specialty stores, and that meant they were expensive! I think part of the openness comes from seeing these hobbies reflected in everyday life.

I’ve had men get mad at me for saying the original Star Trek series did have some sexism and even for the times could have done better in a few ways, and it’s understandable if some women feel uncomfortable watching it. I agree she shouldn’t have brutally dumped him because of this, she should’ve have just asked his why he likes to collect them, so maybe she could understand him better but if she still decides not to pursue anything romantic, then that’s her choice and it’s fine, she’s not obligated to date him if she never likes him for him in the first place

Ok, you make a good point about the trope of nerds always being presented as the good, nice guys, when they can often be just as problematic as the jocks or bad boys, but you're neglecting the bad writing of these shows being the true problem of these nerdy characters' creepiness. The horrible way these nerdy tv & movie characters are written is the true issue here. It paints all nerds as being weird, creepy guys, who obsess over girls they are into, & who ultimately have no respect for them. That's total bullshit, & it's incredibly dangerous to paint any group of people, that way. Particularly today, in the social media age. As a nerd myself, though not the stereotypical kind, I take great offense to us being portrayed that way, or it being insinuated that we're all creeps, & therefore don't deserve love. It's also laughable that the writers of iCarly were insinuating that if he chose tools as his new hobby, that that would automatically make him a better dating choice. LMAO, it's not like, guys who are experts with tools, can't also be controlling, abusive, or obsessive creeps! Anyways, the real issue here is unrealistic, & shitty writing, & also fantasy archetypes of both people, & relationships. Also, the shitty writers on these shows seem to ignore the fact that girls can be nerds too, & can also be interested in collecting toys & replicas, playing D&D, etc. Yes, there are nerdy guys, like this out there, but you can find those kinds of guys, in pretty much any kind of groups or walks of life. In the case of Steve Urkel, I'd argue this his main issue is falling for the wrong girl, & letting himself become obsessed with her. Also, I got a big issue with the title of this video. It's incredibly misleading, & sends the wrong message.

And she never hated him after or had a problem with him as a person, she just couldn’t wrap her head around why a teenage boy would be so obsessed with something so strange, I do agree Carly could’ve taken the time to understand him better rather than brutally dumb him, I feel like the best solution is for them to talk more

  • @medtle1

I am not that familiar with iCarly, but that episode with Griffin proves that the show was written by men because in real life, no girl is going to reject a guy like Griffin for collecting beanie-baby-inspired stuffed animals (unless the guy prioritizes collecting and caring about the stuffed animals over her and their relationship, which seems like the show tried to do but did it so sloppily). The random nerd that tried to kiss carly without her consent is a much better icarly example of a misogynystic male nerd women encounter in real life. Big bang theory is a trash show and hits too close to home when it comes to portraying how sexist, cruel, and entitled nerdy guys can be towards gals (especially nerdy gals). I am not familiar with victorious, but seems like robbie was Dan's and the male writers' self-insert character, which makes it worse considering how creepy he was. Steve urkel's obsession with Laura was annoying and cringy to look at (made even worse when laugh tracks were added in). Didn't watch glee or good luck charlie, but the male nerd becoming a womanizer and bad boyfriend and husband later on after dating a girl that is conisdered "hot" is unfortunately a very common experience, along with gals being forced and pressured into liking and tolerating their male partners' interests and beliefs but never having the vice versa happen in return.

As far as Griffin goes, two things can be true. She dodged a bullet and she dumped him for having a nerdy hobby. I agree that his character degraded by the next time we see him but it's odd to include that as her reason for dumping him. She isn't Raven Simone, she can't see the future. She probably just liked the idea of a bad boy at that time and didn't like him not living up to the fantasy she had in her head of him.
I do agree that it doesn't mean she hates nerds, but it does mean that that wasn't what she was interested in at that moment. As for her being interested in a nerd later, she's a teenager. It's common for them to go through phases, mature and think differently year after year. What she likes when she's 14 may not be what she's interested in at 16. Anyway, people hating on a kid for having an emotional reaction or desire that doesn't make sense to them is silly. When I was a teenager, I thought a girl was cute until I noticed that she constantly said "Slap" in a weird drawn out way. "Ssssllllaaaap". No idea why it bothered me so much.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that what we do as kids doesn't always have a rational explaination. Either way, no one should judge people for dating preferences as long as they aren't hurting anyone.

When I was a teenager, my group of friends liked anime, video games and the usual geek stuff. I didn’t have much in common with them, but I hung out with them mainly because my oldest best friend was one of the group. But as the years went by, they started becoming very mean. They had a lot of resentment for the posh or cool boys in our generation, but they would still buy designer clothes from the same brands they derided the cool guys for wearing. Neither had had a girlfriend (let alone sex, as far as I know) and were very bitter that the pretty, cool girls didn’t pay them attention…even if the geek girls were still available. They referred to women in very misogynistic ways, rating them by their boobs and butts…and I get that teenagers are horny and say dumb stuff, but the way they talked made them look shallow and awful. In one particular instance, they made fun of me for liking a pretty girl just because her boobs were small, “true straight men like big boobs” apparently.
Speaking of straight men, they also were very homophobic. The worst of them all, named Ricardo, once said something like “being homophobic means that you are afraid of homosexuals, but I’m just disgusted by them!”. Ironically, another guy named Alejandro was also homophobic but years later came out of the closet and is now a proud supporter of the LGBT movement, so at least he matured.
As for me, I was still unaware of my homosexuality, yet I was a special target for their bigoted jokes and humiliated me with their gross pranks. Once they recorded me in my sleep while staining my face with a mayonnaise-filled cucumber, pretending it was cum. In another occasion, they got on top of me and recorded me while they twisted my nipples and threatened me with uploading it on the then emerging UA-cam platform, but admittedly they never did.
And as friends, they really weren’t supportive, especially to me. At the time, I was part of the swimming team and competing at state and national levels. I can only think of one time when they congratulated me, and it was very coldly. They were never caring or empathetic as true friends should be.
As the time went by, I sought them out less because I felt uncomfortable with them, and they became very passive aggressive in response. Things eventually boiled up and I exploded and beat them and shouted at them. We didn’t speak for months. We tried to resume the friendship, but it was clear they hadn’t learnt anything and eventually I left in bad terms. Years later, we would kind of reconcile, but I avoided them from then on.
Looking back, I wonder if maybe they were going through tough times in their upbringing; if they had some sort of trauma they were processing; or if they too were closeted gays or bi, ashamed and coping negatively. I hope they matured and that it was just a dumb, adolescent phase. But they were the classic example that nerds and geeks can be just as horrible, if not more, as the archetypical popular men.

As someone who has a nerdy fiance, respectfully but firmly, I rolled my eyes through most of what you said. For nerdy guys, even genuinely kind-hearted and respectful nerdy guys that any girl would be lucky to have, most girls do in fact never even look their way because of their status as a nerdy outcast or because of how they look. Even nerdy girls are like that as well. As you said that's people's right to date whoever they want. But I don't like to pretend the world isn't extremely shallow. Smart people, both men and women are never appreciated. Of course there are smart people who are complete jerks and don't necessarily deserve appreciation. But smart people who are also kind and down-to-Earth are so deserving of appreciation. It's the geniuses who literally change the world. The ones who (usually) end up making the world a better place. Doctors, scientists, engineers, etc. They create all kinds of new amazing things, they save lives. And how many of them probably have the same story of having never found love at all or having found love but it took practically forever for them to because only one special person was able to open their eyes to how amazing those people were and give them a shot. Or even there were ones like me who knew how amazing someone was from the very beginning and wasted no time in jumping in head first and fell in love with them hard and fast. So no. I disagree with you. Nerds do deserve more love. They deserve all the love in the world. You can acknowledge and happily call out the rotten apples in the bunch that are jerks and even predators like some of the guys on your list. A widely heard statement in fandom spaces is that "X isn't really that bad, it's just that the fanbase sucks" and I feel like it holds true for the relationship between nerds as a collective and their interests, especially in this video where their interests include women.

nobody "deserves" love. Deserve implies there's some metric you need to accomplish before you're guaranteed to get something. Love for the most part is completely luck based. You can't "earn" it. Someone either likes you or not.
Now are you asking if everyone should have an happy ending where they find someone to love them? Yes, in fantasy. And since most stories are fantasy then sure, characters get their happily ever after. Fans are satisfied. The end

Fun fact a Nerd isn't just someone who is very into comics and games but is better defined someone who is very knowledgeable and geek out about their interests which means you can have:
    Sports nerds
    Video game nerds
    Manga and anime nerds
    Marvel and DC nerds
    Etc

Larp as portrayed in media is not even close to what it is over here.
The costumes here are cool as heck... and you're definitely not allowed whatever they were wearing in the video. Also, you never see the 400 vs 400 open field battle matches, or the ones in some french castle ruin with torches on the walls and you waiting in the dark for the enemy by an open fire. And if you can't actually fight with your weapon you'd better study on those death scenes.
You also never see the work the npcs do. Like, waiting in a bath of blood while it's hecking cold outside, just to surprise a bunch of players as you rise form the "water". Remember to hold your breath until you can hear them close by :). Or setting up a whole dungeon just for the group to walk past.
I don't think the people writing about these things have every listened to more than half a sentence about the subject.

I agree with you about many nerds often being just as misogynistic or disrespectful as other dudes. But I disagree that social awkwardness merits chastisement. When I say social awkwardness, I don’t mean the over-persistence and stalking that Steve Urkle and Robbie Shapiro do. Those things are awful. But rather their lack of social skills. Urkle’s obnoxiousness is unintentional and well-meaning and while the Winslows do have a right to be annoyed by it, they don’t have a right to ridicule him for it since they see that he only wishes to help them. Instead they should have at least tried to kindly notify him that his attempts to bond with and help them don’t have the desired effects and that they, in fact, do more harm than good. As a person with autism, I could have used this a lot more growing up. But instead people ridiculed me for it.

Peter Parker’s a nerd and look where he got in life. Not all nerds are horrible, and terrible. You can be a nerd and still be a genuinely good person deep down. The only character type that doesn’t deserve love is the Neckbeard stereotype. The Neckbeard stereotype is the opposite of a nerd and are more unpleasant, disorganized, and less intelligent than nerds are. As long as you’re not hurting anyone, you can enjoy whatever you love doing. No one has the right to judge you for that. Also, having girls love men for their muscles and appearance alone is shallow and really stupid. Nerds do in fact deserve love because they are smart and are capable of learning from their mistakes, and are very intelligent. If all men were the same handsome looking and muscular guy, it wouldn’t just be boring, but there would be a lot of problems like there not being any form of medicine, inventions that help us in life, heck, even technology wouldn’t exist! They don’t get enough appreciation for that and the kind of person they are outside of being intelligent. Tails is a nerd and he’s one of the best video game characters of all time. Just because sitcoms portray them as weird and creepy doesn’t mean all nerds are, which is like saying that all girls are weak and helpless.

Girls are not obligated to pretend like they're attracted to anyone. They have their preferences just like guys do. No one "deserves" attention, and no one is a victim. Attraction and love don't work like that, they're just feelings.

Yes, irl male nerds are pretty toxic and horrible. Especially to female nerds, unless you yourself are hot, you get dismissed pretty often. Even if you are good-looking, you're pretty much just sexualized.
But, just like how all jocks aren't just meat head bullies. Some nerds can be pretty nice. Not all male nerds are socially awkward creeps that are incels. Most but not all. You just have to weed out the bad people and find the good ones.
Just like what you have to do with everyone on this planet. But i just wish media would expand on the nerd character. Have some be girls, have some be poc, have some actually be likable. Like in actual nerd groups these days.

Okay, but I don't quite understand what you're trying to do with this video. Your leading question is whether nerds deserve love, and then you show a series of examples of fictional nerds that behaved in bad and sometimes misogynistic ways. But that tells us nothing about how nerds behave in real life, only how screenwriters believe nerds should behave - and it's not a secret that TBBT wasn't as much a celebration of nerd culture as it pretends to be. In the screenwriters' minds there might exist this image of the good natured nerd who deserves love but gets overlooked because girls are not into that, but then they get to interpret what good natured behaviour looks like (and that isn't exclusive to nerds; eg Ted Mosby is also portrayed in a very positive light), or on the other hand, turn up someones obsession to show that yes, actually a niche interest is a good reason to turn someone down. Fictional characters behaving badly is absolutely not a reason to say real life people don't deserve love, but then again, of course, it's not like problems with misogyny or generally shitty behaviour don't exist with real life nerds. This is actually a point where media criticism can come in handy, because what is the message that popular media sends to nerds? That girls will not be into them, but that they deserve love more than the jocks, no matter what they do, because they are just generally kinder people. I think we are in agreement here, and I can see how such depictions of nerds can lead to things like the 'nice guy' phenomenon.
But then the appropriate thing to do would be to criticize the media and cultural attitudes that create such mindsets (perhaps a better ending to Leonard's story would have been him cheating and belittling Penny, and her breaking up as a result, teaching the right lesson that you can't get away with being an asshole just because you are a nerd), not to criticize fictional characters, say they had it coming and call it a day.
Oh, and one last thing. Regardless of how media portrays nerds, and how things have changed in the last decades with more and more girls getting into nerdy stuff, the trope that girls don't look at the geeks probably didn't come out of nowhere either. Many nerds probably DID have a hard times finding romantic partners, though the reasons may be more that people who have very niche interests are also often not the best at socializing and communicating; so the cause for girls (or boys) not looking at nerds may not have been what they interpreted it to be. We can only speculate. But there was a social climate that made movies like Revenge of the Nerds possible. And I do think a lot has changed since then, with nerd culture being practically mainstream now (though socially awkward people still struggle with dating, naturally).
So to answer your question: Do nerds deserve love? Yes. All of us do. Just not unconditionally.

Nerds deserve some love. They may not be fit or good looking, but at least they’re smart, funny and understanding of a girl’s feelings. Do most girls like the ones in these shows love to go out with some moody serious guy who turns out to be a really bad boyfriend in real life? I guess Abe Simpson was on to something about the concepts of love, “Women like jerks”.

  • @WolfsDE
    @WolfsDE 2 місяці тому +2

Obviously, yes...there are problems with any nerd in media. However, this is usually written by comedians and jocks on their perspective of what a nerd is and is not.
A lot of nerds are left out of that process within those comedies.
Nobody denies that some male nerds can be as horrible as some of the jock assholes.
As a nerd, I know how terrible the jocks are. I know full well what flaws I have. I don't deny that younger me, especially made some mistakes in dating in part because of how socially awkward and shy I am.
I have self awareness of my flaws. But, as I have matured into a middle aged adult, I have gotten a lot better when it comes to how I address someone I am interested in dating.
It is all a matter of growing up and trying to do better.
Nerds need help with social skills a lot of the time. Jocks often need to remember to seek intelligence and not just athletic abilities.
But there are also nerdy women and other people, not just nerdy men.
Steve Uerkel, improves a lot as the show goes on because of his relationship with Myra. Still a little clumsy and annoying, but one can see he is trying to be a decent person and only wants to be a good guy. He fails at it sometimes, but he keeps trying to do better. Eventually he figures out that there needs to be a balance between his ultra nerdy self and Stephon who is way more attractive to women, but is even worse than Eddie as a playa.
He find confidence, but stays true to himself... allowing him to grow and mature. That results in Laura finally finding Steve Uerkel the guy she wants to be with.
Screech from Saved By The Bell. He can come off a little stalkery towards Lisa Turtle, but one does know...he means no harm and unlike Zach Morris, actually has a good heart. He just isn't self aware of his behavior towards women. Sometimes it takes someone to point it out in order to see it.
Revenge of the Nerds... nobody in their right mind can excuse a lot of their behavior. They take it too far. But, so do the jocks in the movie. It makes the women out to be a prize won in a claw machine instead of a person.
It takes a balance of nerdy and normal to really get a person to have interest in you. Come across as the stereotype of nerd or jock with sexism thrown in..most women are just going to be turned off.
But, Eddie...a guy who tends to attract a lot of women, never really sees that growth from high school playa to adult as he goes through college. He just continues to see women as a disposable play thing.
I am just saying...there are flaws each way. The key is knowing which people are the ones who keep trying to get better vs the ones who never learn.
Leonard progresses a lot as the show goes on in the Big Bang Theory, but still has his flaws. Howard goes from demented sex freak to a family man because he realized he was being a creep. Self awareness can help a lot as a person grows and matures.
This goes for anyone who wants to date someone else. If you hope that they will like you back, show them who you are and why they should want to be with you. If they tell you to shove off, listen to it.
This doesn't mean in a year or two you can't approach again and see if things have changed. Sometimes with enough time, feelings do change. But, be respectful of their boundaries, period. If they say no, move on. Take the time to get past those feelings and move on.
If you need advice on what you are doing wrong, most people I think would give good advice on how to do better in the future when asking someone out. But some people are assholes and will just destroy you. You have to be prepared for that as well.
Love, it has always been and always will be a complicated thing. But respect should be a constant thing no matter what.

Leonard definitely has some issues with his relationship with Penny. But at the end of the day I did feel the two worked well together and we’re a pretty good match. I will never forgive the writers for having Leonard cheat on her though. That is massively out of character. Though I do feel the show is not only about nerds finding love. But also showing them as normal people. They can be just as flawed as anyone else and the challenge for them is to work past their flaws… or do what Bernadette did and never do that instead opting to be worse and worse to the point the guy who started out as the biggest creep in the world is the guy we feel bad for being tied to your verbally and emotionally abusive ass.
