I have a 2020 Mx-5 soul red, flying miata active exhaust, Fm stage 2 sways. Okay I know it is dumb (it's only a car right?) but I'm in love with that car. Just absolutely pure fun. You can't drive this car without smiling. There's a reason everyone loves this car. If you are driver a real driver, this car is like an aphrodisiac. It's that good.
@@MadelnMachines sways and a proper alignment made a huge difference, it’s flat and aggressively digs into the corner. 2020 RF has a pretty good factory Bilstiens set up. Both the MX-5 and the MINI are fantastic! The MX-5 is one of the best and most beautifully designed sports car and I'm including Ferraris and Porches. However, I bought a 2 door 2022 MINI Cooper S hardtop because I need back seats and the storage room! In the hard top, there is plenty of leg room in the back and it's really easy to get in and out. It has 186 hp so it's fast enough and the handling is so tight, that is one of the most fun drives I ever experienced. I love the design of the MX-5 and if I could afford 2 cars I'd get them both. But the MINI is also the faster car as it often wins the IMSA TC Touring car races and one the constructors championship 2 years in a row. At 90% stock the John Cooper Works MINI regularly beats the MX-5 (The JCW even beat a Porsche Cayman once) on the race track. Not that I'd race against a Miata but I know I can if I wanted to. ;-)
I’ve owned two Miatas, a 1999 10AE and 2011 PRHT, and two MINIs, an ‘03 MCS and my current ‘22 JCW Convertible. I owned the 99 and 03 at the same time. Forcing a choice between the two can only be done based on how each meets your personal needs since each is fantastic and everyone sees each as a fit to their needs differently. I always found the Miatas a bit uncomfortable on long drives. Yet, many people travel the country in them. But, give me a Miata on a windy road any day. Brilliant. The MINIs are more comfortable for me and I love having the extra space in a smaller car. Give me the MINI for power, tech and comfort anytime. Maybe the answer is, get one of each :-)
I own a r56 Mini for 4 years now its fun in the twistys ok on straight line acceleration the MX -5 will out handel the Mini period ! the center of gravity is much lower on the mx-5 also the the 50/50 weight distribution of the mx-5 is the total game changer .then 1 last thing there is always a day when its resale time... you can't give a mini away and people will beg you for a used MX-5
Thanks for the feedback and insight into owning a Mini. Yes, the MX-5 is a very sought-after car, surprisingly, even here in Vancouver where it usually rains for 364 out of 365 days a year haha
Seriously...which one would I pick? Well, look at the Bug-Eyed Mini Cooper then look at the beautiful Miata. Sheesh, are you going to offer your girl a ride on your "mini" or take her away in your dream machine? Miata. Has anyone ever mentioned that you look like Mr. Bean?
Funny enough, nearly all of my female co-workers when i drove the Mini to work that week, said that they'd rather take the Mini over the Mazda. But like you said, most guys would choose the MX-5 (including myself). And yes, I have been told I look like Mr. Bean. I watched all his shows & movies growing up haha Thanks for watching!
@@MGReviewsBlog Hi, at the 12:00 minute make, you are looking back and I thought of Mr. Bean. Hey, I like your reviews very much and after helping my teenage son edit some of his videos, I now know how much work goes into creating a good one.
I drove both and the mini has so much better handling even if fwd, and the Miata cannot hold a 6foot male comfortably. Don't understand why most or more people prefer the Miata, the handling is crisp and sharp on the mini and I've driven f12 and 911 turbo s Don't get it at all, just me I guess I feel dumb to be on the minority of this one considering the mini is head and shoulders more roomy and much more fun, even if it's a bit slower.
It's not a problem to be in the minority of a discussion. I find myself there too with some of my reviews. We all have different tastes and that's why there are choices for us to choose from that suit our preferences. It would be a pretty boring driving experience if everything was like a Tesla or Model T haha
Miata is always the answer, doesnt matter how many other features in other similiar cars. Miata is always on top of the mountain, head and shoulders above the rest,. Slow fast is such a good quality in the right package
@@MGReviewsBlog we will keep the pure tradition of what the best sport car in the world ever is in our garages, beside our houses and on the road. It will never be forgotten as long as we exist ! Slow fast the ultimate fun, pure koolaide smiles
Its origins are in the UK and that's how most people know it. There's some BMW models made in the United States, you don't call them American. There are some Nissan models made in the UK but you don't call it a British brand.
I prefer mx5 if i travel with my buddy, but if i travel with a girlfriend i choose jcw for her stuff and to not to hear her screaming while i m drifting 😀
The Achilles tendon in the Mini is it's BMW linage. Expensive maintenance plus previous Chrysler influence of assemble in So America. The MX-5 is simply more refined. Both feature needless electronic crap to charge for, a shame.
lol the big circle in the mini IP that used to have the big analog speedo, now holds within it a rectangular screen. just get rid of the circle, you have killed the tradition already. it's just patronizing
I nearly did the same for that reason, but wanted to see if he would drive a bastardised MX5 as well. Fortunately he chose the manual which has always had a great shift, except for cold 1st-2nd, in my experience, which requires a thoughtful movement (this in both the NA, which I currently own and the 2001 NB).
My daily driver is a 2017 Mx5 ND RF Club with Michelin Pilot Sports one size up from stock. While it can be a challenge to get my 75 year old bones into it, I absolutely love this car! So much fun and cheap on gas. The last car I owned that was this much fun was a 1958 Alfa Giulietta roadster with a 0-60 of about 16 seconds and it was always in the shop. The Consumer Reports Buying Guide that I have on hand (2020) gives the Mx5 a rating 79, and the Mini a rating of 70. Historically the Mx5 also has much better reliability than the Mini. Don't want to rub this in, but I have owned a few British cars, and... well lets just say their shop time was about the same as my Italian cars.
this isnt real anymore, bmw/mini since the years 2016 is now in the top 5 most reliable brand for the last 6 years. the new minis are extremly reliable. (the older ones were horrible though)
The Miata is the only true sports car left. Very light, nimble and no gimmicks. Everything else on the market is heavy, compensating with bigger engines to make more power, and loaded with bloatware (tech gimmicks)... a shadow of fun cars of yesteryear.
I agree, although I’d say as of 2023, the Miata value proposition has really declined, imagine an RF Club going for $40k, then think of all the extra hardware and tech JCW includes for the same-ish price.
@@josephvincello8962 Don't get the RF; (unless you really just want your miata to be your only car and you commute on the highway) it's an absurdly expensive option for this car, and it's a compromise of the entire premise of a 2-seater convertible. MSRP on a soft top club is 32-33kish, 35k out the door for a new, reliable, easy-to maintain sports car is about as good as you're going to get. What else are you comparing it to in the same space that the value proposition doesn't look favorable?
I have to admit as a Mini JCW owner I am always tempted by the looks of the mx-5, particularly the mx-5rf, however when I did test drove the RF with the notion of switching brands I came away not wanting to switch. The Miata for me had too many downsides. The biggest, I felt much safer in the JCW on the highway driving 80 or 85 miles an hour. The JCW felt much quicker to gain that speed, was more stable and when trucks or large SUVs went by and the Miata seemed to be at their mercy and the JCW not as much. The next was space. When I travel for a vacation with my wife I like to go in a sports car not her luxury vehicle. Probably most do this in reverse but since I do all the driving I want the driving to be fun so the sports car and I could not imagine how one goes away with two people for a week or two in the Miata. Lastly as a mountain biker I need to be able to carry my bike to the trails. I thought I could use a suction cup roof mount bike carrier I saw on line. It was fitted on a mustang and this guy flew down a bumpy road and the bike was as stable as could be. Unfortunately the roof on the RF is not solid enough. Pushing lightly with you hand on the metal roof panel it depresses, so a suction mounted rack was not going to happen. Mazda has no trailer hitch mounting kit so that avenue, although not a great one, still would not work. Concerning the two cars on twisty roads, both are a ton of fun. My JCW is configured with the manual shifter. In this area it was a toss up. Of course I am very accustomed to front wheel drive vehicles and not rear. If I would have adjusted fully to a rear wheel car my feelings may have changed but in the test drive I took on along country back road with plenty of twists I enjoyed both equally. In terms of pure sports car looks, my vote is the Miata RF. Love its looks! On the other hand the mini is also a fantastic looking car but not as "pure sports car" as the Miata, which is why I had been eyeing them. In the end the JCW hit too many of my needs and just for a slightly more "sports car" look I was not going to switch cars and loose so much.
Ive had both and both are awesome! However, just purchased another Mini Cooper S convertible as they're slightly more practical and comfortable for longer touring trip! I would not rule out another MX5/ Miata in the future....both solid options.
Their not even in the same driving category. The MX5 is the best selling sports car on the planet, with possibly the best gear change . of any current production car, at any price. The Mini looks like a pram, used for some other activity, once your kids have outgrown its use.
To drive, it is. It gives you more feedback through the steering wheel & seat as to what the car is doing. Plus you can drift it if you want 😉 Thanks for watching!
Both are excellent. The Mini has more character. The Miata has excellent driving dynamic and way better reliability and cost of ownership in the long run.
Huh, I'm surprised that the MX-5 Miata is faster to 60 than the more powerful Mini Cooper. But like you said, I guess it makes sense since the mazda is rwd and its lighter.
Power to weight ratio. An F-650 has almost 1000hp but takes 20 seconds or so to get to 100kmh. Why? Because it weighs nearly 5 tonnes. And always remember, lighter is funner. The mini's extra bulk means it will never, ever have the live feel of the MX. RWD, manual, mid-mount engine, electric-assist steering, drive-by-wire acceleration, tuned naturally-aspirated engine, dedicated platform, ground-up design ... The list goes on. The Mini is an enthusiast car (and like all BMWs basically a computer on wheels). The MX is a pure driver's car. That's the difference and either you understand that or you don't.
A soul red mx5 with recaro wheels ( diamond) original, and some lower springs. Thats what I have on my 2021 model. No problem to take a weekend trip for two persons, if you use softbags.
The short chassis FWD Mini is super fun. But then so is the MX5 Miata RWD. Life is DEFINITELY TOO SHORT TO DRIVE BORING CARS! And BTW the review is nice and practical. Thanks for that little focus on the useable boot space and the legroom. This will help us Tall drivers. My 9 year old Cooper S Hardtop (R56) is actually a perfect car for two persons plus luggage for all sorts of road trips….
I prefer the MX-5; it has looks, agility, and did I say the looks? I'm averaging 34.6MPG in my 2021 RF, Club with BBS, Brembos, Bilsteins and Recaro seats. So far my driving has been all in town, at 35 to 45 MPH, and sometimes up to 50 MPH in a couple of places. It's a tiny car...but for me it's awesome!
Enjoyed your review (and comedy!) I've owned a MINI Paceman S. Over the life of the vehicle, the MINI began to use more oil between oil changes and was no longer capable of making it the full 10,000 miles between synthetic oil changes. I'm told by dealer mechanics that this is typical of these BMW engines. As far as MINI convertibles go, I've never seen the point of the 4 seat convertible. Those rear seats look like only a place for small dogs or toddlers. Why bother??? The best MINI convertible EVER was their 2 seat Roadster, which they discontinued (along with my Paceman). IMO, they can ditch the 4 seat convertible and bring back the Roadster. It was truly the miniest MINI! As for me, my dollars do the talking. I own a 2017 Miata RF GT, and I'm very happy with it. I'd buy another. Former convertibles I've owned? - 2006 Mercedes SLK 280 - 2009 Audi TT-S Roadster
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed my video and comedic touches. Totally agree with you on those back seats. Best to just fold them and use the area for more cargo capacity. Is the MX5 your primary car or do you have another?
The Miata is my nice weather play car or emergency spare car. Primary commuter is a pedestrian Honda HR-V. In the past though, the TT and the SLK were my daily cars.
Fantastic review. MX5 all day long!!! I own the very same one only mine is finished in the rare Jet Black Mica (drop-dead gorgeous!). Not that the Black Mica is rare, but combined with the Sports Package, well good luck finding one! As you mentioned, the Sport Package will cost you an additional $4400 (Canadian) but if you price the BBS wheels ($7096.17), Brembo brakes ($5650), Recaro seats ($5551.13) and the Bilstein suspension ($1100.43) individually, that additional $4400 is a no brainer! I know those prices sounds ridiculous so please don't take my word for it, price them individually yourself and then add the 13% tax (Canada). I know that no one in their right mind would buy each piece individually, but it sure puts things into perspective doesn't it! In any event, my wife and I narrowed our search down to the either the Mini or the MX5 so your review is very fitting. After test driving both, the MX5 came out on top by a long shot! We are not rich by any means so almost $50k a very significant amount of money to spend on a summer toy "BUT", no regrets whatsoever! Our beautiful MX5 lives mostly in the garage. We take it out on sunny days, and only if the pavement is bone dry. So far, it's been driven 12,311 kilometers (7648 miles) and I can assure you that each one of those miles has put a HUGE smile on our face! I highly, HIGHLY recommend the MX5 with the Sport Package. It's pricey but when compared to "ANY" other new sports car, you won't find a better bargain, PERIOD! Take it from a man who actually spent his hard earned dollar to buy one. You won't be sorry man, I promise! Now obviously, this is not our daily driver. Mine is a Ram Sport (love it) and my wife drives a Malibu. Initially, we bought a new 2019 Can Am Spyder F3 Limited however we sold it last year after we bought the MX5. After covid, I actually sold it for the very same amount that I paid for it "brand new" tax in. Albeit, we only drove it 3900 kilometers. After riding 2 wheels for over 40 years, I was very leery about switching over to 3 wheels, but that was the only way that my wife felt safe enough to ride with me. I gotta say the F3 limited was a blast to ride. It's a completely different animal when compared to any motorcycle, but in a good way. I would go so far as to say that I should 'of bought one a long time ago. It really is THAT good! If I could afford it, I would keep both the Spyder and the MX5 but as they say, you could only drive one toy at a time. Again, the MX5 wins hands down! So kudos to you my friend for posting yet another FANTASTIC review. You're not afraid to call a spade a spade. You say it as it is, like it or not, no B.S. I also really enjoy your comic relief bud. Hat's off to you man, great job!
Nice, fair review. But I disagree about making the MX-5 bigger. Mazda worked really hard to make the ND smaller, shorter and lighter than its predecessor; it's one of the reasons why I bought one. You're 6'4". Dude, as Coach McCarthy told me when I tried out for the high school basketball, "sorry son, sometimes life's unfair."
I went from a 2006 Mini Cooper to a 2021 MX5 in Polymetal Grey color. That 2006 Mini was A LOT of fun, but the MX5 plays on a whole other league, and I plan on keeping it with me forever.
@@MGReviewsBlog I think it’s a combination of different things what make the MX5 so unique… steering, manual clutch, rear wheels, weight, etc… but for sure a JCW is a winner too. I’m also more into roadsters although the Mini is expected to be a better daily car. Oh, and the price of the Miata is also a bargain for how much fun it gives.
2016 MX 5 ND with 4 pots and Recaro`s. Also have a RX 7 FC Turbo and a CX 3 AWD for winter ... BTW, my German spec MX5 is doing 230 kph+ , would give the Mini also a hard time in straight lines. And I experienced here in Germany with 30 + years of MX 5 - experience, that most cars give up against a MX 5 after a very short fight... What is hard work in almost every other car is childs play in any MX 5 especially the 1., 2. and 4. gen`s.
I guess I'm the odd one of the bunch here. I've owed a 2021 MX5 for about a year and half but with my aging body and less lack of agility now, I recently sold it and purchased the Mini Cooper convertible. I very much enjoyed the Miata but the small size has made me re-think things and went to the Mini, where I am much happier now. The Mazda was well built and glad I had my time with one. Was fun and I think a very sexy looking roadster for the money. I do wish Mazda would stretch and widen the MX5 and probably add a turbo. I have to say I've enjoyed both cars but like I said already, age has pushed me into a much happier place for me in the Mini.
Understand as well that Mini has taken their vehicle and powered it and cut the top off knowing that there is a market for this (although the price!). Mazda has been producing the MX for 30+ years knowing there is no market, no economies. They do it for love and for the joy of there being such a car in the world.

Bought the MX-5 after only one test drive I had taken. :) No regrets!
Which one ? The Mazda MX-5 $th generation has driving dynamics that the mini just does not have. Its very light weight / naturally aspirated engine produces a flat torque curve & every gear gives you acceleration in the proper rev range. A super light clutch with a smooth 6 speed manual transmission connects the driver to the car. Just a toy ? A garage queen ? I bought a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top in 4 season Northern Illinois. My daily drive ! When the snow starts flying the winter tires go on & its almost as much fun when its cold. Going into year 5 with this little roadster & really impressed with its very simple effective design. Thru every weather condition this car has been solid & reliable. I do not drive it conservatively either !
@@MGReviewsBlog As long as the snow is under 7 " this car will make it any where ! When snow drifts were over 2 feet I waited for the snow plows & into work a couple hours later. No big deal ! I left my car stock height & have Michelin X- ICE 3 snow tires. Its a beast in snow ! Ice storms too it really didn't matter. I apply the 303 Fabric Guard to the soft top every fall to make sure its weather proof for the winter. Good to go ! Avoid parking under ANY trees though in any weather as the filters will clog & the interior could get wet if you don't. Traction in winter is good as the torque is not that great. I change / rotate the tires over each season myself & keep the out of season tires on a dolly stacked with cardboard / insulation between each tire in the garage. Its a great daily driver in all seasons ! I look forward to my drive everyday 365 days of the year ! So far there has not been a day I didn't make it to work because of weather. My experience with the 2016 MX-5 Club soft top after 4.5 years. Absolutely love this car !
If only Mazda makes it the size of Z4. I have Mazda 3 2021 and getting inside Miata is very uncomfortable. It's way too small and dangerous to drive on the roads full of SUV's. And the trunk space is pretty much none existent. Z4 doesn't have those problems having the same form factor.
I don't think the car needs to be as big as the Z4. Like I said in the video, it just needs about one inch or so of legroom and I'd be perfectly happy with it.
Honestly, that Mini is still expensive and fairly slow for its price. I would pick the Miata over Mini since it's about driver involvement so the lightweight, RWD and manual transmission is prioritized over a little bit more power. If I wanted more power, I would go for something completely different that is noticeably more powerful, like a Veloster N dct or a Golf R. I wouldn't go for a pure "driver's car".
Starting around the 8-minute mark when discussing storage in the MX-5, no mention of the cubby behind each seat was made. Utilizing those two for infrequently used items and moving the flat repair kit to the cubby in the trunk where a jack could also live greatly adds to the storage capacity of the Miata.
Love my 2020 miata. Adjustable coilovers would make it perfect. I had a NA which was fun stock for me. Had a NC which was soso but lowering it transformed the look and performance.

The Mini looks comical, the MX5 looks sexy. Mazda reliability is legendary, mini unreliability is legendary. Mx5 rides and handles better. No contest. MX5 is the clear winner.
@Kenny Kolodor So someone has one that has been OK (allegedly), and that alone trumps the entire car industry's verdict on them? Are you a nutter or what? Check the facts, not your mate's hearsay you dumbo!
JCW surprisingly not a bad value compared to Miata or Miata RF Club. More power, more space, much more tech. JCW also has a longer warranty and free scheduled maintenance. For some reason, Mini Convertible reviewers never fold the rear seat, space is a prime consideration among convertible intenders. FYI, Miata has additional storage in hidden compartments behind seats. PS - I like your no nonsense presentation, I especially appreciate the lack of the fake hoots and laughs most reviewers do during acceleration - it was fun when Top Gear did it 25 years ago, now it’s just fake and irritating. PSS - no more of the self-deprecating manboob jokes, no one is perfect, and once you said it, I couldn’t unsee it. And then you kept coming back to it. Otherwise keep up the good work.
I drove both, no contest the handling and sharpness of the mini is outstanding. I'm insulted that people prefer the Miata, it's unbelieveable. And no room in the Miata for a 6 footer. So much better the mini even with front wheel drive.
Neither thanks - now if it was the choice between a NB MX5 [miata] and R53 cooper s then we'd be talking! As a 64 yr old with dodgy knees I would (and indeed, did) choose the Cooper. I also believe the "rear wheel drive is better" viewpoint is often overstated - a sort of reviewers perceived truth that doesn't stack up in the real world.
Haha, it was actually the other way around. I booked the Mazda again this year and then the Mini came to the fleet and decided to compare it against the Mazda. Convertible vs convertible.
I own a Mini Cooper S (R56) and a MX5 ND. They are both a blast to drive in twisty roads. Very different cars, but driving them always put a big smile in my face. So much fun little cars.
You have the best of both worlds haha. How's the maintenance on the Mini? I'm noticing a lot of people in the comments of this video saying that it'll cost a fortune. Is it true or is it overblown?
@@MGReviewsBlog Only issue I´ve had so far was having the thermostat replaced a couple of years ago. About 200€, workshop labor included. Clutch is probably the next thing to be done. I Bought this car new 13 years ago, and that´s all the issues I´ve had. You should check regularly the oil level, as it´s quite an oil thirsty engine, but do the correct maintenance and it will be fine. Great little car!
@@MGReviewsBlog older minis were not reliable exept the R56 mini cooper S that were hit and miss, newer ones f56 are know for being extremly reliable, people commenting mini are unreliable just dont keep up to date, like people saying mazda are rust buckets.
I have a Mx5 NC 2006 and a Mini One 2006 for winter and rainy days. I love them both. The Mini is being replaced by a 2019 Cooper S Sport hardtop, the best of both worlds.. Miata is fun and reliable but our summers are short in the UK and the Mini easier to get the golf clubs in and better in the snow. You only live once, save up and get both.....
Being 6ft 1' I have test drived the Mazda and when i bend forward my head touches the top frame of the windscreen. I consider this a risk for serious injury in case belts does not tighten. In Mini there is much more space. Also, has anybody compared to road noise with top up?
A much better comparison would be the 2022 Cooper S with 6 speed manual transmission. You can't compare an automatic to a manual it just doesn't work. If you would've driven the Cooper 6 speed I can almost guarantee you would change your mind and like it better. Not just because of the extra leg room but because of how much fun it is to drive. It's the most fun I've ever had on 4 wheels, way more fun than the Miata.
I agree, it would've been a better comparison if the Mini was a manual. But I can't pick & choose which cars go in the media press fleets. I have to make due with what is available to me.
I have a 2021 MX-5 ST Club. It’s a great car, but it is not as high end as a Mini. The reliability is a true plus. Still, I enjoy driving it and look forward to getting in each time I have someplace to go. The Recaro seats make a huge difference and being short, there is more than enough room. I actually added a thick supportive seat cushion to boost me up a touch. To me the next step up would be a late model used Porsche Boxster or a Z4. I had a 2010 Z4 and it’s a close call in terms of which car I like better with the 10-yr old Z4 a more comfortable ride with high and better at high speeds, but the more nimble and energetic Mazda winning at anything below 65. The Mazda is also less prestigious of a name than BMW, Porsche or even Mini, but the fact that is more fun and practical reflectis how good the car is.
Oh? I obviously have the other problem. Is moving the seat more forwards not enough? I understand that the height might be an issue because the seat doesn't have height adjustment.
Was considering swopping to a mini cooper S convertible *great car) - but my MX5 MK 4 is just too good I can't find anything I like more. Will probably get a newer one with more powerful 2 litre engine. Great review thanks.
At 6'6 the JCW was really the only choice. But agree that if the Mazda had another couple inches of leg room it would have been a tough choice. The pops of the JCW exhaust make me giggle and I've always liked Mini's toggle switches. It's also surprised me with how much you can fit in it. Even a full Costco cart will fit with room to spare. Have had no problem taking a back seat passenger either as my wife is short enough to scoot the seat forward enough for some rear leg room. I'm glad someone is making a fun small convertible that works for tall folks.
@@MGReviewsBlog No problems. The 3rd gen F series are significantly more reliable than the earlier models. Has only had the included free maintenance so far.
The Mini looks so bloated and bulbous these days.. What happened to it??? When the 'New Mini' came out, it looked so trim and lean. Short overhangs, and it was like the body was taught against the underlying mechanicals. Was such a good looking little hatch... But with each new gen, it just looks more and more bloated.
It is more bloated. It's grown in size since its reintroduction in the early 2000's, never-mind the original Mini. But at least with its bigger size, it's become more practical (relatively speaking). Thanks for watching!
@@MGReviewsBlog Right, I'm sure its safer, more comfortable, quieter, etc.. But damn, it used to be cute, yet mean looking. Like a little bulldog!!. Now, it looks like one of those fat little goldfish. Y'know the ones, with their eyes often popping out of their heads?
The MX5 was heading down the same path with the NC series. I had a test drive through MX5 territory, and stepping out of an NB series, I christened the NC ‘fat boy’. The ND has gone back to the NA concept of low weight and tight everything. I now own a 1991 NA and love it.
Love the Miata. I have a 2018 GT, with a 6-speed manual. It has a Remus exhaust, but no Brembo brakes or Recaros. With its black paint, black leather Interior with red stitching, BOSE audio, and cherry red top, it gets a lot of looks, and will likely be far more reliable. While I don’t have the BBS RIMS, I do have nice 17” smoked chrome rims that look awesome. Also, at 5’8” tall, I have plenty of room.
I have a mini se and a fiat 124 spider. Love them both. I am 5’10 and my head is very close to the roof of my 124. Do not have that problem at all in the mini. Surprised you can fit at 6’4.
I think a more relative comparison would have been the MX-5 vs a MINI S. The JCW is a pocket rocket. I should know as I currently have as a summer toy a 2021 MINI S cabriolet, but I owned a 2016 MINI JCW for 3 years as my daily. That was my favorite car of all time. It’s more performance oriented than the S. Having said that, I’m on the verge of switching out my 2021 cabriolet S for a 2023 Mazda MX-5 RF. I think it’s more playful and toss-able than the S (I’ve also owned a 2001 and 2009 Miata, so I’ve also had a soft spot for them as well). Both MINI’s Aand MX-5’s are great cars!
@@MGReviewsBlog To the best of my recollection, the only annoyance with my 2016 JCW during my 3 years of ownership was due to the low profile run flat tires. 4 tire changes due to hernias as a result of potholes on our fine streets of Montreal. The 2021 Cabriolet I’ve only driven 2,000 (😳) or so kilometres, so no issues there. I also owned a 2019 JCW MINI Countryman for almost 3 years; no problems of any importance.
@@MGReviewsBlog yeah…I picked that up in your video , I just ordered a new BRZ - I owned convertibles in the past and if I lived in an amenable climate I might have considered one this time but they’re too damn frustrating in the mountains of Colorado
Had a 2006 silver Mini convertible and changed that for a 2016 1.5 MX5 icon edition in same grey colour as the review car. This review spot on and agree with comments. Mini better for space as can use back seats. MX5 can surprisingly carry a lot but you do need to plan your packing! Interior - MX5 very minimalistic; Mini - very retro. You are tighter in the MX5 obviously. Driving - MX5 better on every level. Looks - the MX5, being rarer on the road gets more attention and looks like a proper sports car. Mini - liked the look of the first gen model, the front end of the new gen doesn't look right. Just a personal opinion though. Finally, my partner's opinion 😁? She wished I kept the mini as more space but she cannot drive so will never understand ITS ALL ABOUT THE DRIVING DYNAMICS. If we were to afford 2 cars i have said we would get a 2016 Mazda CX3 Sport Nav so we can put potatoes in the boot or be a taxi service to appease the civil powers.. 😀
Do you still have the MX5? After driving one nearly every year now for the lat 3 years as a demo car, I really want to buy one as my personal car. But I can't comfortably fit in it cause I'm too tall :( Thanks for watching!
I most certainly do, don't want anyone having the benefit of the depreciation! Have no kids either which is the biggest factor in still retaining it. The biggest deal breaker is whether you can fit comfortably, it's such a shame but you cannot cut your legs off...
You know which one I'd pick, but which would you like to drive around in? The MX-5 Miata or the JCW Cooper?
Miata 😅
Absolutely the mx5!
The Mazda Miata MX5 is the ultimate shift it yourself Roadster fun to drive machine.
I have the MX5 RF. ❤️ IT
Mazda MX 5😍🍷
Absolutely MX - 5. I like its design more and more and I didn't drive a more fun car, it's excellent.
How loud is the active exhaust? What make is it?
Do sways make a big difference with & without coil overs?
@@MadelnMachines sways and a proper alignment made a huge difference, it’s flat and aggressively digs into the corner. 2020 RF has a pretty good factory Bilstiens set up. Have not been in a hurry to change that. I also added the frame reinforcement from Paco/FM over kill probably for me but racers with sticky tires and sways have actually damaged the ND frame.
@@MadelnMachines sways we’re HUGE… the Bilstiens on the 2020 RF are not bad, suggest you do some poking around on the Flyin Miata website and you tube.

Not that I'd race against a Miata but I know I can if I wanted to. ;-)
Good points. Wondering if the JCW is worth the extra $ over the S.
Maybe the answer is, get one of each :-)
Pretty much my thoughts haha. But getting both sounds like an expensive proposition, lol.
Thanks for watching!
Mazda Mx5 for me. In fact I just ordered an RF GT Back roof edition :-) .... although I haev abit of a wait, looking like Feb at the earliest
Whoa!!! Wait until February until it arrives??? That's insane! I knew there were waits with some brands but I didn't know it was this bad with Mazda.
I like both but I got a F56 model
S. I have wanted one for a while, and also because the 4 seats.
I'm curious, how has maintenance or any unforseen breakages been for you? I'm noticing a lot of comments on the video about poor Mini reliability.
Bean. I watched all his shows & movies growing up haha
Thanks for watching!
@@MGReviewsBlog Hi, at the 12:00 minute make, you are looking back and I thought of Mr. Bean. Hey, I like your reviews very much and after helping my teenage son edit some of his videos, I now know how much work goes into creating a good one.
@@richardflaherty2373 thanks Richard!
Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Hello! How's the weather over there this time of year?
I drove both and the mini has so much better handling even if fwd, and the Miata cannot hold a 6foot male comfortably.
Don't understand why most or more people prefer the Miata, the handling is crisp and sharp on the mini and I've driven f12 and 911 turbo s
Don't get it at all, just me I guess I feel dumb to be on the minority of this one considering the mini is head and shoulders more roomy and much more fun, even if it's a bit slower.
It's not a problem to be in the minority of a discussion. I find myself there too with some of my reviews. We all have different tastes and that's why there are choices for us to choose from that suit our preferences. It would be a pretty boring driving experience if everything was like a Tesla or Model T haha
👌😎
Miata is always the answer, doesnt matter how many other features in other similiar cars. Miata is always on top of the mountain, head and shoulders above the rest,. Slow fast is such a good quality in the right package
I love my NC, an hopefully soon , he will be joined by his brother ND, I also have the NA. My eyes are tearing!
The MX5 is one of a kind car. It's too bad it is the last of its kind :(

Haha, I think you know
Miata is always the answer.
For family Mini is better, if a stroller has small size
True but I imagine a car seat will be very difficult to fit in the back seats.
Thanks for watching!
You show the Union Jack (British flag) for the Mini but the convertible is actually built in The Netherlands.
😆
The Achilles tendon in the Mini is it's BMW linage. Expensive maintenance plus previous Chrysler influence of assemble in So America. The MX-5 is simply more refined. Both feature needless electronic crap to charge for, a shame.
lol the big circle in the mini IP that used to have the big analog speedo, now holds within it a rectangular screen. just get rid of the circle, you have killed the tradition already. it's just patronizing
Yea, talk about fitting a square/rectangular peg into a round hole haha
A sports car has 2 seats. So, the Mini with 4 seats is a sports sedan.
What about the Mustang, Camaro, GT86, Porsche 911? Those are 2 door coupes with 4 seats
Stopped at 0:40. Automatic….
The Mini? If you kept watching I would've told you that it is available with a 6-speed.... just not as a convertible. Hardtop only.
Miata for the win in my opinion!
Miata all the way!
What else are you comparing it to in the same space that the value proposition doesn't look favorable?
delusional fool
I’ve had both , current car is MX 5 but as I’m now in my seventies I suspect my next car will be a return to a MINI .
MX-5 for sure, no contest.
I own and prefer the MX-5. I wanted a true roadster and the maximum fun they provide.
Ive had both and both are awesome! However, just purchased another Mini Cooper S convertible as they're slightly more practical and comfortable for longer touring trip! I would not rule out another MX5/ Miata in the future....both solid options.
Miata is always the answer ✌🏾
Their not even in the same driving category.
The MX5 is the best selling sports car on the planet, with possibly the best gear change . of any current production car, at any price.
The Mini looks like a pram, used for some other activity, once your kids have outgrown its use.
Lmao mini coopers have definitely lost their respect.
mx5 by faaaar... Excelent Video!
Thank you!
people that say the MX-5 is better, have never driven a JCW.
To drive, it is. It gives you more feedback through the steering wheel & seat as to what the car is doing. Plus you can drift it if you want 😉
Thanks for watching!
@@MGReviewsBlog Haha well its subjective. I definetly think the JCW is way more fun to drive (and sounds better). Great video mate, cheers.
Nope i did tune JCW to 300ps. Mx5 ND RF better
Both are excellent. The Mini has more character. The Miata has excellent driving dynamic and way better reliability and cost of ownership in the long run.
I would also pick the MX-5 . Not to mention the much better longterm reliability of the Mazda mark .
MIATA is always the answer!
Thanks for watching!
My main mode of transport is a brompton folding bike. My back up is a 2018 mx-5 rf. I love them both. I’m a lucky man.
Which one do you use more often?
@@MGReviewsBlog the car! Over the last 6 years, i did more miles on my bike, but since I’ve had the mx-5…😍
i prefer the mx5 without a doubt.
If you have a dog, the choise is very simple, the mini jcw all the year around!!!
The Mazda is much sexier and much more engaging to drive with rear wheel drive and better weight distribution
- 2006 Mercedes SLK 280
- 2009 Audi TT-S Roadster
@@MrBTRDAYZ I like the HR-V! Great little car.
Wow, thanks for your owner's insight! And I'm glad you enjoy my videos. Hope you get to watch some of my other ones.
Agree 100%. Perfect as is for us five teners!
I went from a 2006 Mini Cooper to a 2021 MX5 in Polymetal Grey color. That 2006 Mini was A LOT of fun, but the MX5 plays on a whole other league, and I plan on keeping it with me forever.
Congratulations on your purchase! What made you decide the MX-5 over a newer Mini Cooper?
@@MGReviewsBlog I think it’s a combination of different things what make the MX5 so unique… steering, manual clutch, rear wheels, weight, etc… but for sure a JCW is a winner too. I’m also more into roadsters although the Mini is expected to be a better daily car. Oh, and the price of the Miata is also a bargain for how much fun it gives.
Good to know. I have an 03 MCS and love it but am looking into a MX5 as my next car. Have not driven one yet though. That will be the true test..
Looks, RWD, slick 6 speed. Miata all the way. Yes, I own one. Buy the Cooper for the wife.
How has the MX-5 treated you in terms of reliability? Just scheduled maintenance or have you experienced anything worse with the car?
Thanks for your ownership feedback!
As a kid I loved the Mini series cars, but Miata is always the answer, especially the NA/ND
Nice, congratulations on your purchase!
Seriously, how is this even a question. The answer is very clear.
I'm curious, how does the MX5 fare in heavy snow? Can it still get traction with the snow tires?
@@MGReviewsBlog Absolutely brilliant, snow and steep hills for a month last year..
Mazda is the best, the Cooper will STAY IN THE REPAIR SHOP. Consumer Reports.....don’t lie. GREAT REVIEW!
Thank you!
yeah .... if it mini, better to rent then own.
Dammit, I knew I was forgetting something! Thanks for the feedback!
Love my 2020 miata. Adjustable coilovers would make it perfect. I had a NA which was fun stock for me. Had a NC which was soso but lowering it transformed the look and performance.
I still prefer the older mx5 styling on the front lights area
The one from the 3rd generation?
So I'm guessing you got the mini for a review and decided to create an excuse to drive the mazda again. I'd do the same thing
@@Kgonros77 awesome, thanks for your feedback!
@@MGReviewsBlog older minis were not reliable exept the R56 mini cooper S that were hit and miss, newer ones f56 are know for being extremly reliable, people commenting mini are unreliable just dont keep up to date, like people saying mazda are rust buckets.
Love this Mazda Miata. It’s a must buy at some point in one’s life.
Japanese > British “anything”
i choose mini cooper. it love classic although modern technology built in it.
An owner of r52🎉🎉❤❤
A much better comparison would be the 2022 Cooper S with 6 speed manual transmission. You can't compare an automatic to a manual it just doesn't work. If you would've driven the Cooper 6 speed I can almost guarantee you would change your mind and like it better. Not just because of the extra leg room but because of how much fun it is to drive. It's the most fun I've ever had on 4 wheels, way more fun than the Miata.
I agree, it would've been a better comparison if the Mini was a manual. But I can't pick & choose which cars go in the media press fleets. I have to make due with what is available to me.
@@MGReviewsBlog Makes sense. That said great job and loved the video!
@@BarefootVlogger thanks!
I’m in the market. This was excellent. Mazda MX-5 RF, here I come!
You won't be sorry!
Problem with the MX 5 if you are petite like 5ft the drivers seating position is too low and too far from the pedals.
Oh? I obviously have the other problem. Is moving the seat more forwards not enough? I understand that the height might be an issue because the seat doesn't have height adjustment.

Jcw's mine car. Wonderful car 💕💕
In track mx5 is history
Was considering swopping to a mini cooper S convertible *great car) - but my MX5 MK 4 is just too good I can't find anything I like more. Will probably get a newer one with more powerful 2 litre engine. Great review thanks.
How long have you owned the MX5? Any major issues or just regular scheduled maintenance?
MINI! MINI! .Enjoyed your in depth comparison!
Thanks! I also compared the Cooper S against the Mazda 3
Mini😍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
At 6'6 the JCW was really the only choice. But agree that if the Mazda had another couple inches of leg room it would have been a tough choice. The pops of the JCW exhaust make me giggle and I've always liked Mini's toggle switches. It's also surprised me with how much you can fit in it. Even a full Costco cart will fit with room to spare. Have had no problem taking a back seat passenger either as my wife is short enough to scoot the seat forward enough for some rear leg room. I'm glad someone is making a fun small convertible that works for tall folks.
What kind of Mini do you have?
@@MGReviewsBlog '19 JCW Convertible
@@RT-jr9en nice! How's the reliability & maintenance on it? I'm noticing a lot of people are mentioning that in the comments of this video.
@@MGReviewsBlog No problems. The 3rd gen F series are significantly more reliable than the earlier models. Has only had the included free maintenance so far.
Mazda + reliability mini is awful reliability
@@bliglum haha, yea I know exactly the ones you're talking about
The MX5 was heading down the same path with the NC series. I had a test drive through MX5 territory, and stepping out of an NB series, I christened the NC ‘fat boy’. The ND has gone back to the NA concept of low weight and tight everything. I now own a 1991 NA and love it.
What kind of stupid comparison is this. The mini isn't qualified to shine the mx5's shoes.
Too bad UA-cam doesn't allow for pictures in the comments section. Would love to see your MX-5.
I have a mini se and a fiat 124 spider. Love them both. I am 5’10 and my head is very close to the roof of my 124. Do not have that problem at all in the mini. Surprised you can fit at 6’4.
Fit, yes. Comfortable, no. Haha
MX-5 and manual for me!
Detailed, factual, informative, and boring for the most part. The bra portion got me laughing in a rather weird way, though.
Not everyone has Top Gear budgets. But thanks for watching.
How has the reliability been with your 2016 & 2021 Minis?
@@MGReviewsBlog To the best of my recollection, the only annoyance with my 2016 JCW during my 3 years of ownership was due to the low profile run flat tires. 4 tire changes due to hernias as a result of potholes on our fine streets of Montreal. The 2021 Cabriolet I’ve only driven 2,000 (😳) or so kilometres, so no issues there. I also owned a 2019 JCW MINI Countryman for almost 3 years; no problems of any importance.
The Miata wins just because it’s way more reliable then the mini.
For me, can't even compare a 2 seater with a 2+2. Something about the way a 2 seater feels in the curves.
The MX5 is a truly unique car. I can't wait to see the next generation of it.
Thanks for watching!
Ouch is right…MX5 is a no brainer for a normal sized human
But I'm not a normal sized human being :( sigh
But I can't comfortably fit in it cause I'm too tall :(
Thanks for watching!
I most certainly do, don't want anyone having the benefit of the depreciation! Have no kids either which is the biggest factor in still retaining it. The biggest deal breaker is whether you can fit comfortably, it's such a shame but you cannot cut your legs off...
Kind of a flat affect here...is this a crash test dummy that survived and got promoted to marketing?
Hey nice videos that you make... oh wait...
