  • Guaifenesin (Mucinex, Robitussin) - Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Warnings
Guaifenesin, found in over-the-counter products like Mucinex and Robitussin, is an expectorant used to relieve chest congestion in conditions like colds and bronchitis. It works by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the respiratory tract, aiding in mucus clearance. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, and rash. Dosages vary by age, with adults typically taking 200-400 mg every 4 hours, not exceeding 2.4 grams daily. Guaifenesin can interact with other cough medications, antihistamines, decongestants, and alcohol, which may increase the risk of side effects. Warnings include avoiding use if allergic, and consulting a healthcare provider if pregnant, breastfeeding, or having chronic respiratory conditions.

very helpful! Thanks for sharing ❤❤. Btw, does expectorant=mucolytic?

No they are not the same. An expectorant helps thin the mucus in your lungs, making it easier to cough up. It increases the production of mucus, which helps move the loosened mucus out of the respiratory passages. Mucolytic works by breaking down the structure of the mucus itself, making it less sticky and easier to expel.
