  • Loratadine (Claritin) - Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Loratadine, marketed as Claritin and other brand names, is a second-generation antihistamine used to alleviate allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, throat, and chronic hives. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, reducing allergic reactions without causing significant drowsiness. Common side effects include headache, fatigue, dry mouth, and stomach pain, with serious side effects being rare but requiring immediate medical attention. Standard dosage is 10 mg daily for adults and children over six years, and 5 mg daily for children aged two to six, with adjustments needed for liver or kidney impairment. Loratadine can interact with CYP3A4 or CYP2D6 inhibitors, other antihistamines, and alcohol, so it's important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications being taken. Warnings include caution during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in patients with liver or kidney disease.
