Thanks for the great video. You may not realize how good this turntable was back in the day. I had a demo of this turntable playing the Telarc 1812 Overture with actual cannon blasts recorded. If you looked at the record where the cannon blasts were, you could see a wide flat area with a single groove winding through it compared to normal vinyl where the grooves are tightly packed. This turntable played the track so perfectly, that you could feel the concussion of the blast in your chest. When I played the same record on my Dual ULM turntable, which had played everything else up until then perfectly, it was like someone had flicked their finger against the side of the tone arm, It actually knocked the stylus off the record. The servo controlled tone arm pushed back to keep the stylus in the groove on the JVC. Not even the CD version of this recording was able to reproduce the cannon blasts as well as the combination of this turntable and vinyl recording. I suspect that the other servo control decks of this era were probably just as good, but this is the only one I had experience with.
What a bizarre design. Your resilience despite the challenges of the repair project really makes these videos fun to watch though. Thanks for making them!
Good Job man. Not easy. The button mod was a great idea. I regularly restore turntables and only 2 have kicked my ass out of hundreds......Yamaha P-850 and Sansui FRQ-35.....both 80's electronic cheese. Awesome when they work...but the photo sensors (pulse width modulation) usually 3 or fried ic chips fail and then they are basically junk. Those large green caps always meter fine. When working on these tables you do not push buttons repeatedly ever when powered on. It is not a good idea. The guy on "12 volt vids" channel always claims the stylus is broken when he gets the turntable from a client...anyone that works on tables has a box full of fubar styli and I sure he keeps the good one and swaps on his broken or bent one and claims it happened in shipping...LOL. im glad you are honest. You should send this unit to Trevor's Bench and do a youtube xover mash-up.
Really interesting that you managed to get it running with modern switches in it. I've just resurrected a QL-Y7 and couldn't make it work with new switches in it. I had to dismantle the old ones, clean the contact and reuse them. Even when pushed they have a resistance of between around 200 and 400Ω. With modern switches installed the turntable just span as soon as the deck was powered up, and none fo the controls did anything. Weird.
Nice work on that JVC! I had the chance to pick up a JVC ql-y55f a while back. It needed work, a cracked dustcover and the complexity of the servo controlled arm made me pass on it. Great machines when they work.
Well done on your repair of this _insanity_ over engineered turntable. If you hadn't done that research i don't think it would have been repairable. A fantastic looking table however !

I have the same issue. I've had 3 service people look at it. Still haven't solved it. Still works manually. Considering I got it for a song I'm still happy with it.
you are on the wright way under the tone arm is a small pice of rubber whit 2 holes in it , i have pic of it , i think one tme thare was a pice of contact wire or lietze in thare.. . the lever i brucht up twiit same tin wire..
Great video. There's a lot of issues in these computer controlled decks. Give me something simple to fix any day. The limitation of lp playback isn't typically the turntable anyways.
I picked up this turntable at an auction for $15! To my surprise when I got it home it worked well. My only issue is that it plays quietly through my speakers so I’m not sure what to do. I can hear it playing the record but it’s just super quiet. Any ideas on what I need? I have modern speakers so I’m assuming that’s part of the problem
A far cry from the very simplistic AR turntables…a motor, a belt, an excellent suspension system, and a lightweight, properly balanced tonearm. The function of a turntable is very simple; they became too complex for their own good. Most modern turntables have reverted back to the “less is more” design similar to the AR approach.
Some of the late-70s to mid-80s Japanese quartz-lock, DD tables are engineering marvels with wow & flutter ratings a belt-drive TT could only dream of.
@@TurntableGuy real world data illustrates that a well engineered belt drive can offer similar performance. My point is that complexity comes at a cost. That said, I prefer a DD model.
Great video. Your discussion mentioned start location and return point controls but not how to adjust. I have this model that starts slightly before the record first groove so the needle drops off the record. Any suggestions?

The Towa caps measured OK. But, the glue had penetrated onto the legs and the customer did not want them reinstalled.

I admire your persistence and ingenuity to repair this turntable! But after seeing the complexity, I would never buy one of these.
The first thing I would have done was to obtain the service manual, do your prefer to search out the result blind which will give great satisfaction.

Do all these electronic components improve sound in any way? If not, I would skip a table with those extras.
The automatic functions serve no purpose other than convenience. The tonearm quality and quartz lock will affect sound.

You need to plug into a phono input or need an external phono pre-amplifier.

full tonearm must have 10k Ohm and need cleaning... yes this plastic is "resistor" ...

That is a weird turntable. But, I’ve seen Denons that are worse - meaning more complex.

3in1 regular (red bottle) is not great. 3in1 for electric motors is what you want. Blue bottle.
