I actually met Kellyn a few years before she passed away. She was an instructor at my local Curves, and when my mom told me who she was, I was totally starstruck. We became friends, and we had burgers together at In n Out one time. She even gave me a book of inspirational quotes as a gift just because, and she adamantly told me that I should never ever let anyone dictate who I was or my own happiness. She stopped coming around to Curves suddenly and I only found out she was sick when my mom happened to get the news from another Curves member. Wagner voiced Mickey and Minnie as late as 1988/1989.
Very interesting. I know on the "Mousercise" record from 1982, Pete Renaday voiced Mickey Mouse; he was pretty much Disney Records's main Mickey voice. The same record also had Tony Pope as Goofy, and Clarence Nash reprising the role of Donald Duck.
I honestly thought that when Kevin said that the Steve character was narrating the Did You Know segments, that Steve was the off-brand stand-in Mickey voice just for this show because the official Mickey voice actor wasn't available for whatever reason... And then, Steve started actually talking. I can't believe they thought that knock-off falsetto sounded good for Mickey.
Kellen seems like such a good person, I work with young kids so I've really come to appreciate when you can tell someone else enjoys talking, interacting, and teachings them, far too many elementary teachers I've met seem to hate children
I'm sure there are teachers out there that genuinely hate children, but I personally believe that it might be less that and just stress from being overworked, underpaid, and underfunded. Doubly so since my sister-in-law is working to become a full-time teacher, and she's been a teacher's aid to preschool to elementary age kids, and she enjoys working with them, it's just the stress of the job, not making enough money, having to worry about whether or not the school she's working at will continue to employ her into the next semester or if she'll have to find work in another district that is 1) actually hiring and 2) will pay decently (she's shared stories of being severely underpaid working for intercity type schools because the district doesn't deem payment or proper funding for the classrooms as "necessary" because the kids are from low-income families and "most likely not go to college, if they don't drop out of high school first" so the schools are widely written off as unimportant compared to the more homogenized (dominantly white) schools in their district. Being a teacher can be a thankless job, and I really sympathize with anyone who chooses that career-- especially those who still enjoy it after all the shit they have to deal with.
My first grade teacher hated kids, or maybe she just hated me. I don't really know why she would because I generally stayed out of trouble and when I did get in trouble it was usually because I misunderstood an instruction. IDK but either way she was mean and I missed my kindergarten teacher a lot that year
YES, I totally agree. I also work with kids too and you can just tell when someone 'has it' and she definitely had it. Made to share knowledge and joy with children on a topic she was passionate about.
I’m hurt that Kellen is no longer with us. I literally woke up early to exercise with this show as a toddler, towel and all. This was those most fun I’ve ever had exercising in my life.
I can vividly remember waking up at 6:30 a.m. everyday as a 5 year old to never miss a mousercise. I loved doing these workouts and would get so giddy seeing the characters workout too. Now 30 years later I am still a workout fanatic. This is one childhood TV subconscious programming I’m actually glad did it’s job ✌🏽
I wish there were more fun workouts nowadays too! For adults as well. I’m 20 and I would prefer mousercise😂 lots of adult modern workouts are like “NO PAIN NO GAIN, SO GO EVEN IF YOU FEEL LIKE DYING OTHERWISE YOU ARE A P..SSY”. They are also now often made by people with serious eating disorders, etc, so they also start praising a bad lifestyle, strict diets, working out through pain and discomfort, and plenty of other negative stuff. Which always only pushes me away I’m not a huge sports fan but even this video and the mousercise positive vibes got me inspired and wanting to get more fit. I loved this friendly approach, where the trainer tries to make working out fun and actually makes you smile (instead of making you feel bad about yourself)
When I was in middle school I owned "Mickey UnRAPped." Which is exactly what it sounds like. With classics such as "U Can't Botch This" and "Whatta Mouse."
Despite being a fat little indoor child, I loved music and dancing and was obsessed with this show as a kid. Kellyn was such a good host, and I remember thinking she was so kind and pretty she must be a special exercise Disney princess when I was very little. Also, this video reminded me of "You and Me, Kid" which I had completely forgotten about until I heard the title, and went into full flashback mode.
"Kellen would imagine her body in various scenarios in an ethereal ritual that allowed her and the children to achieve transcendence" delivery was too good, almost didn't notice what you actually said
@@mikaroni_and_cheez He could've just taken out life insurance on Minnie. At least then he'd have a place to stay assuming he knew how to properly get rid of the body and the evidence.
I was a mouserciser when I was a child. At the time, it came on at 5 am and I remember rushing downstairs to exercise every weekday morning. I wanted a leotard and ankle warmers so bad!!! Thanks for the nostalgia, I completely forgot about this show.
Wow, this was before Eisner was head of the company. This has his MO all over it, jumping on a fad this hard. Cynicism aside, I’m glad this show didn’t look like it talked down to the kids watching. It gave them good fitness tips and even told them to take a break if they were tired. It’d be cool if they added it to Disney+ for kids stuck at home.
That'd be awesome if they did, though I wonder if they might run into legal problems. I mean, unless everyone of those kids is owned by the Disney corporation....
@@rhett8-u1n They would have signed contracts giving up the right to their likeness on all recorded video of themselves done for the show that Disney could do almost anything they want with it. fairly standard media contracts. The non Disney owned music label music rights are the real issue. The "popular hit tracks" segments would have to be cut or replaced because they likely only got rights for the tv airing.
I was in kindergarten when that original record came out. We had to do it as a way to encourage fitness. I guess it kinda worked as I got into weightlifting for a while as I got older.

Aw, Kellen looked like she was the perfect host for the show and really gave her all to those performances. I also love all the teachers exercising with their students virtually during COVID-19, great way to stay engaged and educate kids on healthy lifestyles.
I can’t believe how good a speaker Kevin is. He could put out an hour longvideo about the type of cotton candy they sell in Disney park and I’d be here to listen
Ugh, I was dreading you saying she had passed away. She seemed like such a genuinely sweet & upbeat person. Fantastic job again. You've really rekindled my love of children's entertainment

Kellyn really does seem to have been perfect for this segment because watching her move, she has so much energy that she almost looks like a cartoon character herself. What a brilliant personality
3:40 This kid must have either been the daughter of a drill sergeant or ate nails for breakfast, because when a grown woman complains of the difficulty in a class taught by a 9 YEAR OLD, you know it's tough.
Nope. Part way through adulthood a lot of adults develop back pain, feet pain, or just don't exercise as much. Kids. Kids are balls of energy. I'm only 20, but a workout my nephews could do that was full of action I'd probably fail
"Come on everybody let's watch Defunctland!" It's awesome to find out so much about this fun and energetic "magical" exercise series. Another informative and entertaining video. Stay safe and keep it up!
Another one from my child hood. I did this in my kindergarten class. But I remember in the morning I would get up with my mom and she would do Jane Fonda and I would do Mousercise. We would watch and excerise together. I remember loving it because it was my special time with my mom.
I remember this show. I always tried to take part, but I got short of breath. None of my doctors knew why despite batteries of tests on my tiny self. More than ten years later, I was diagnosed with asthma. Yay.
Yeah, I hate how there's so little Disney Channel Original stuff from the pre-2000s, except for the movies. I think today's kids would enjoy Mousercize, Adventures in Wonderland, Sing Me A Story with Belle, and other shows.
You know what Disney could have done to help So much with the distance learning stuff. Actually created all of the in universe captain America edutainment Videos for schools that must have been made.
Okay not even related to the content of this video but I got the notification and originally read it as "Defunctland: The History of Mayonnaise." I quickly realized that couldn't have been right and went "Wait what?"
I lost my first tooth at Disney Mousercise in Sherway Gardens Mall (Toronto). I was in the audience and it was already pretty loose, but I wiggled it enough while watching the action that it finally came free. I wasn't actually participating from what I remember (I was a shy, chubby, sedentary kid), but I still got that nifty certificate.
THANK YOU for this episode! I was a big fan as a kid of 4 or 5, watching the reruns in the early '90s. The show would come on at some ridiculously early hour on Saturday mornings (6 or 7?) and I would wake up before my parents to watch it. (I'm sure they appreciated my keeping myself occupied...) I'd always grab a towel so I could be like the kids on the show with their mats. I'd forgotten that was actually a suggestion from Kellyn and I'm glad you included that in the video. Great memories.
This feels fun and creative for kids who loved Disney. This also checks off another series from the original Disney channel that DefunctTV has covered, which is a real treat. Kevin's narration throughout the ants at a picnic workout part was so good! It's overall a good time!
Seriously, I remember this. My mom worked for cablevision. So we got all the early HBO, Cinemax and Disney entertainment. I feel sooo old, but I sure loved those leg warmers! Edit : I think it played at 6-7am. I knew it was early when it came on.
Exercise TV is just weird. I'm happy to have been born in the mid 90s where by the time I was old enough to remember anything vividly the trend was dead.
Every morning my mother would drag us out of bed to Mousercise when I was a kid. This brought back so many memories. I am so deeply sad that Kellyn died from cancer. That show was only as good as it was because of her. She was so amazing.
I recently was at Disneyland and rode Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway. Its queue with Mickey’s history was amazing and it was awesome to see Mousercise acknowledged in it.
I tried getting my 62 year old boss to do Richard Simmons work out tapes with me, and he counter offered with Olivia newton john. But i think i just found the perfect middle ground, so thanks Kevin.

God I loved this show as a kid. My mom even has some old VHS tapes of ME working out to it. So many great memories. The Disney Channel I remember was so wonderful to grow up with. Thanks for covering this ❤️
I remember watching this while eating a bowl of Froot Loops in the morning before school. I never danced along with it. Just was waiting to leave for school after watching Mr. Wizard...
I like all the silly clips of Goofy from the bonus segments. He definitely does make a good accidental sketch character! The scene with Mickey and Minnie breaking up also gave me a good chuckle as well!
The concept would work again today. And the idea at it's core, to get kids to have fun excercising and moving, is really good. Heck, as she said: It's not just for the kids, the parents can join in! As someone who is really into fitness I can see the benefits of this program.
I had that orange audio tape back in the day. It's kind of funny that Disney had orange audio tapes in the '80s and Nickelodeon had orange video tapes in the '90s. God, I'm old.
That orange cassette tape was called the “Disney Songtape”. They put out a series of albums with a booklet that came with it. This ran from 1979 and into the 1980’s.
Lol. That movie would not fly today also, it's pretty dull and boring except some Animation segments and soon Splash Mountain would be rethemed to The Princess and The Frog.

@@cannibalisticrequiem It's 2022 and teachers are still not given the salary and care they deserve. It's such a shitty world we live in.
I love how Kevin treated the idea of all those children being ants desperately trying to avoid drowning in ice with the serious tone it deserved
Reflected in the kid's face on the zoom in.
I’m hurt that Kellen is no longer with us. I literally woke up early to exercise with this show as a toddler, towel and all. This was those most fun I’ve ever had exercising in my life.
“Her hair was noticeably larger and more 80s”
Sounds on brand for the 80s
I can vividly remember waking up at 6:30 a.m. everyday as a 5 year old to never miss a mousercise. I loved doing these workouts and would get so giddy seeing the characters workout too.
Now 30 years later I am still a workout fanatic. This is one childhood TV subconscious programming I’m actually glad did it’s job ✌🏽
Same. My Mom actually has pictures of me with my blanket and sippy cup doing the exercises.
Which always only pushes me away
I’m not a huge sports fan but even this video and the mousercise positive vibes got me inspired and wanting to get more fit. I loved this friendly approach, where the trainer tries to make working out fun and actually makes you smile (instead of making you feel bad about yourself)
Sad it’s lost media. Would love to have this for my son.
@@pb542hey I know I'm late to the party but internet archive has quite a few of the episodes!
I could have gone my whole life without hearing a Disco song from Donald Duck.
You could have, but then would you have truly known joy?
And what a truly unfulfilled life that would have been
When I was in middle school I owned "Mickey UnRAPped." Which is exactly what it sounds like. With classics such as "U Can't Botch This" and "Whatta Mouse."
At least it wasn't Disco Duck.
@@wstine79 A small comfort sure, but it is something.
"Special exercise Disney princess" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I forgot about you and me kid too!

I was a mouserciser when I was a child. At the time, it came on at 5 am and I remember rushing downstairs to exercise every weekday morning. I wanted a leotard and ankle warmers so bad!!! Thanks for the nostalgia, I completely forgot about this show.
Like literally up at 530 am in Colorado. Lol why?
Wow, this was before Eisner was head of the company. This has his MO all over it, jumping on a fad this hard.
Cynicism aside, I’m glad this show didn’t look like it talked down to the kids watching. It gave them good fitness tips and even told them to take a break if they were tired. It’d be cool if they added it to Disney+ for kids stuck at home.
I agree, wish there'd be more programs like that sometimes
That'd be awesome if they did, though I wonder if they might run into legal problems. I mean, unless everyone of those kids is owned by the Disney corporation....
@@rhett8-u1n They would have signed contracts giving up the right to their likeness on all recorded video of themselves done for the show that Disney could do almost anything they want with it. fairly standard media contracts. However putting on Disney+, if they are anything like my nieces, and nephews they would skip by it, and go EWWWW 80's!!! yet sit through Stranger things, and other 80's stuff without even knowing it. Go Figure 🤷♂️
RIP Kellyn, she was amazing and I wasn’t even alive for this originally. What a captivating woman. You cannot buy hosts like that.

*In clinical trials, a small number of patients using Mousercize reported symptoms including dizziness, fatigue, abdominal cramps, headaches, shortness of breath, restless leg syndrome and uncontrollable body odor.
Aw, Kellen looked like she was the perfect host for the show and really gave her all to those performances. I also love all the teachers exercising with their students virtually during COVID-19, great way to stay engaged and educate kids on healthy lifestyles.
Disney: If we include our popular characters in this new tv series, it might cheapen the brand.

Kellyn really does seem to have been perfect for this segment because watching her move, she has so much energy that she almost looks like a cartoon character herself. What a brilliant personality

Nope. Part way through adulthood a lot of adults develop back pain, feet pain, or just don't exercise as much.

No, and as a matter of fact, the big cheese got kinda pissed that the voice of Donald was on that record.

Every morning my mother would drag us out of bed to Mousercise when I was a kid. This brought back so many memories. I am so deeply sad that Kellyn died from cancer. That show was only as good as it was because of her. She was so amazing.
10:28 Kevin's sense of humor is so great, I love the dryness in telling a joke simply by showing the awkward silence you show.
