I’d love a video on what’s “normal” with a new set up, ie what to expect and what will settle its self out. Vs stuff that’s normal but may require a few steps to fix. Vs abnormal things to look out for and need to be addressed.
I’d also love a video on buying second hand equipment. What to look for, what to avoid, how to fix minor issues etc.

is there a type of fish or aspect of fishkeeping you'd never touch again and what fish or part of the hobby do you think you'll "always" come back to even if you're taking a break right now? and why for both?

I once bought 20 neon tetras from Petsmart for $2 each here in Sarasota, Florida... That same day, I bought 20 neon tetras from Wet Pets SRQ for $4 each... I put each school of 20 into its own 40 gallon tank and waited two weeks... Both tanks received the same care and food... After those two weeks, I had 1 still living from Petsmart, but all 20 lived, and are still living about 20 months later... The solo Petsmart neon wound up living with a betta in a five gallon, but it died about 9 months ago... So it lived 11 months while the quality neon's are still thriving...

I have found over the years that some employees stress the fish way too much when they collect them. The only store that ever mentioned something was at a PetSmart. Lady turned and looked at me and simply just said that she was worried she's over stressed the fish and that she will hold the fish till the next day for me to come and get. I really appreciated that after fish keeping for the better part of 15 years I've kept my casualty rates are low and I'm proud of that. But honestly fish as hardy as they can be they are a gamble there are sometimes when I've seen fish pass for no good reason. When my partner was getting into Bettas he bought one it was fine in the store and a week later it developed a tumor and passed shortly after. To say he was bummed out and didn't want anymore tanks is an understatement. Eventually he realized it's a crapshoot and he went and got another Betta and he's had it the better part of the year and has more tanks than he probably should but he's happy with them and takes care of them.

as a beginner aquarist, i am really fascinated by the microscopic signs of life appearing in my tank even without fish living in it currently. copepods, detritus worms, different forms of algae - it's all super interesting to me. have you ever been particularly interested in the microorganisms in tanks & if so, have you ever found any particularly fascinating creatures living in your tanks? are you interested in viewing your tank under a microscope? i just think it's a cool "side benefit" of aquariums, how there's a whole layer of life forms barely visible to our eyes that are helping maintain the ecosystem.

Not sure if any one mentioned the ebbs and flows that come in the fish hobby from wanting to set up as many tanks as possible to getting overwhelmed and just best practices for how to make sure you don’t lose the true enjoyment for the hobby by having “too much of a good thing.” Creating too much work for yourself that it takes away all the time that was used just enjoying the tanks when there was less and so forth.

I'm always paranoid when transporting fish. Got some ember tetras today and then took like five minutes to get a beef and cheddar from the shop next to petco. Made sure to park in the shade and keep the windows open. It was still a harrowing journey even though I knew it was almost certainly 100% safe.

Speaking of corydoras, a few years back I had five albinos in my 55 gallon. All of a sudden, over the course of about a week I had little Cory Dora eggs all over the glass of the tank. No, I never dropped the tank temp, I never increased flow, I didn’t do a thing to encourage the little buggers! I separated them into a little 2 1/2 gallon, and ended up with 35 little hatchlings surviving …and it never happened again!

I tend to help out more and more in the fish area, as I keep a few fish myself. I sure wish we had a quarantine set up at our store. the fish come in, acclimate then go straight in our display tanks. it would be so awesome. We can get some really neat fish but its hard to receive them and keep them happy. without some sort of quarantine.

I don’t have a question right now but would like to hear what has been your favorite tank set up so far and why. What made you enjoy it? What made that one come together for you?
Personally I have 2 tanks now that I really enjoy because I had an image in my mind of what I wanted to accomplish and took the time to let it get there slowly. After 2 years they are looking like I imagined. One is a “flooded field” scene and the other is a pond scene. I feel like all the stages and the waiting to let it mature is what I enjoyed most about them. I love seeing all the little bugs (hydra, seed shrimp, cyclops, planaria and detritus worms…) and just observing how they all live with the plants and inhabitants of the tanks now.

I think I was about 6 when my brother and I got my first fish tank from pet-co. We set everything up and added fish the same day (stupid now that I look back). It was a cold water tank with 3 common goldfish we got from the feeder tank. After buying them, the pet-co employee told us to put 3 table spoons of salt in the water. My parents knew nothing about fish and neither did we but we were so excited. Assuming the employee was a knowledgeable guy we said “ok thanks!”
We get home and add the fish and shrimp and salt (table salt might I add because nobody explained anything about aquarium salt or even told us such a salt even existed) and immediately something wasn’t right with the goldfish. They start swimming all funny and we jumped into action and did a complete water change. After that the fish were thriving. My one goldfish lived for about 5-6 and got HUGE!
Fast forward 27 years, now that my knowledge about fish and the aquarium hobby is much more extensive, I’m wondering if that employee did actually mean aquarium salt and if so, is there a reason he would have recommended putting salt in with the goldfish? I know salt can get rid of some infections in small doses but is that something that people tell people when buying new fish? Is it a standard practice for feeder fish or just fish in general?
    Love your channel BTW!

I always enjoy listening to you and seeing your business expand to new levels. I have questions about the chemistry of dechlorinators. I have heard opinions from everyone in our local fish stores, heard opinions on UA-cam but I have never heard anything that I felt was truly knowledgeable from a real chemist. All of the dechlorinators we see now are super concentrated which is really nice ($$) for my koi pond and large community tank but it is impossible to not overdose when doing a 10% water change in a ten gallon tank. Too much of a good thing becomes poisonous, right? And, how long does excess dechlorinator stay in the pond/tank? If not used up by reacting with chloramine in the added water, does it remain until more water is added to react with or does it degrade with time/sunlight/bacterial activity, etc? Chloramine eventually breaks down to ammonia and chlorine; the bacteria convert the ammonia and the chlorine outgasses to the air. So, how important is it to fully dose (or overdose) every single water refill? Perhaps Jason from PrimeTime Aquatics might have some insight on this. I look forward to your opinion.

So far I have not had fish dying on the way home luckily. But I was a bit worried when I got my bandits. I live in Utrecht City and there are plenty of good fish stores around, but none of them had bandit corys (Corydoras Metae). But in January I was at an aquarium fair in Oosterhout and checked with a well known fish store there (which also had a big booth ar the fair) and they had them so after the fair I went to their shop to get them.
From there it's about 50 minutes to drive home and since that highway is overdue for a renovation (they're getting on with that soon), it has some actual bumps. I reckon the bumps are from irregular settlement of the road's foundation because of typical Dutch low land soil conditions. So I was worried about them perhaps getting too stressed.
But they're fine and they even bred some while in my quarantine tank, doubling their number! Bought seven, got seven more. 😁

My Molly had a fry 4 or 5 weeks ago that has no eyes. When I saw it, I was sure it wasn't going to survive but it is free swimming now and still comes to the top when i put food in. it's still living in a breeder box, but I'm hoping it will live a long, normal life.

One thing I can't fully wrap my head around is putting a sponge filter in a tank to seed it to be used in another tank. I was always told you only have enough bacteria in the tank that is required for that tank. With that being said, if I have an established tank, the existing filter, substrate, and whatever else already has enough bacteria to support the tank. Now, I add a sponge filter to pre-seed it. How does bacteria get on it when there shouldn't be any extra bacteria needed? Does bacteria leave one surface and jump to another? If so, how do we know it jumped to that need filter before taking it out to be used in another tank?

Why do 80%-90% of Electric Blue Acara have sunken bellies ? Almost every picture you see of them they have some degree of sunken belly.

Jason at primitime aquatics brought up a good point one day about acclimating new fish. He mentioned that the sudden rush of fresh air introduced to a bagged fish can spike the ph levels. That's why once a bag is up to temp its best to get them from the bag and into the tank quickly. 🤷‍♂️ especially if they've been bagged a long time.

So, when I got into Angelfish with my liquid rock water they would never breed and often not live more than a few years. So, I bought a RO unit (not rodi) but the whirlpool brand that makes about 10 gallons in a storage tank that we also drink. It takes TDS down to double digits from triple digits and lowers the PH initially. I have three tanks running on this water and the rest the hard water. I have often considered changing my pea puffer tank back to hard water but I have seen UA-cam videos about people killing fish by changing perimeters. I seen one that said even half RO half Tap (dechlorinated of course) will kill fish bc they can't handle the perimeter changes. Is this true? Also, is it okay to have Puffers and 'scale-less' fish in hard water or are they healthier in Softer / more neutral water?

THIS WORKED WELL FOR LONG-DISTANCE MOVE w. fish!!! Years ago I moved from one province [Canada] to the next, about 14 hour drive. I had 30 tropical fish and 3 babies, from 5 tanks. I divided them into several bags [new bags, bread size basically, about 2/3 full water their tank water] tucked in together - blankets around to help with temperature - and would stop where I could find electricity every couple of hours with an aquarium pump and a few inches of hose attached. I'd let it bubble into each bag for a minute or two each time I stopped, about 6 times. IT WORKED! I only lost the babies/ fry but they were really young - had them in their own bag, would have been nice if they made it too.
It made sense to me at the time so I tried it. Now it's easier to learn online [that was 1997] that it's "lack of air first" for what will kill fish the quickest [notwithstanding dramatic temps or other trauma I'm sure]. Maybe this will help someone, first time I've shared it publicly - just back into fish again after about 20 years and loving it :-)
THANK YOU for your channel, I'm enjoying it :-)

You've probably spent more hours watching more fish in Aquariums than most humans on earth. What are some.of the funniest things you've seen a fish do?

I’m wondering if terrestrial plants oxygenate the water if only the roots are submerged. Does the oxygen only get released from the stem-up?

Amazing content as always cory!! Inspirational !! Maybe you can help me !?!?!?!
5 years on and still dont know the answer so this series has to help me and my local shop figure this out !! Pleassse
Ive been a private breeder in the uk now for 15+ years. I Sell to my local shops with the massive help from your "breeding for profit" series
One day i had a very large order from my local of 50 blue electric rams , 50 gold rams and 100 mixed livebearers i had at the time.
Bagged them all headed down to my local shop to do the transaction.
While the shop accumulated the fish i do my usual what do i need while im here walk around.
An hour has passed at this point and the shop let the fish out after around 40 mins of accumulating them.
To which the employee came out and told me and the manager who i was talking too at the time all my 7/8 month old rams were dead.
All 100 rams had been released and within 20 minutes they had all died.
Honestly at first i thought he was joking. Werid joke but okayyy ..... But no .
So me and the manager did water checks on his tanks , the water in the bags and i even went home to grab more fresh samples of my water for him to use his fancy water testing unit on.
Too all of our suprise nothiing shown out of the ordinary. 7.4 ph . 55 tds . 0 ammonia 0 nitrite . 20 nitrate. From my transport bags and my fresh tank water i went back to grab .
His water was also the exact same with 7.2 ph being the only difference. With both of us in communication with temps mine being 84-86 Fahrenheit which i drop to match his 82 Fahrenheit 4 weeks in advance.
None of us to this day have figured this out but losing that many fish over 20 mins is baffling as i never have experienced or heard of anything like it and neither has the shop owner . It was devastating. Heart breaking that all those fish i had cared for were gone jusg like that .
It was a huge blow to both of us . We still are doing buissness 5 years on but never have had it happen again or do i ever think it will happen again ?
But you maybe the only person i know that might even have the slightest clue ..
    Thank you in advance
Sending fishy vibes from the UK keep it up !!!

Hi, I've had difficulty keeping Cherry Shrimp in my Fluval Flex tank and wondered whether the substrate or beach rocks (some with fossils showing) could be affecting them. I'm based in the South East of the UK and our tap water is really hard. I've tried removing all of the stones & replacing them with aquarium ornaments, which seemed to bring the pH down a bit and the water is otherwise really clean ( my local fish shop tested it & said it was better than theirs! I was so chuffed with myself) but again only 1 out of the 3 shrimp I brought home has survived. Help! I love the little guy/gal & would like to get them some friends but feel like a serial killer if I can't figure out what the issue is 😭

Ok, no one is talks about how to capture the prolific hill stream loaches- I tried the net and wait with food( that works for about 5 and then it's over), I tried the old school idea of reverse trap - first time I got lots, second time one of the adults ended up in there a long with ding dong cardinal tetras- I lost two juveniles in 20 minutes as I stepped away). What is the best way to thin my beautiful babies so eventually I could bring in other adults for breeding again. Helpless in hill streams.

Hmm, staff at Pet Smart, at the checkout, process/handles flea & tick treatments for cats & dogs, then some de-louse product for birds & chickens, then go any put their hands in a tank to catch your fish! Probably why fish do better from fish only stores.

Should I replace my substrate? My 32.5 Fluval Flex has sat dry for 2.5 years, with the original substrate. I bought a new home October 2021 and have installed a whole home water filtration system, finally! Now I am ready to bring it back to life. Would you suggest total replacement or partial replacement of the substrate before I order all the gorgeous plants, from Aquarium Co-op, of course!

Btw, corydoras metae are known to be shy fish and the ones I bought certainly are. They do like to come out at night when it's dark to forage in the foreground. At day they stay hidden in the back and they get spooked easily.
But they had a couple of kids and these are in the foreground like all day. Is it possible the parents were wild caught? I didn't have time to ask at the store since it was very busy. A lot of customers came from the aquarium fair that was in the same town that day. And I wasn't entirely sure parking was free that Sunday and was afraid risking a fine.
I'm just wondering if tank raised bandit corys tend to be much less shy.

@@boristheamerican2938 I don't think the parents are that old yet, but I enjoy your suggestion.
When I got them, they weren't fully grown yet, but they were already of breeding age apparently. I did feed blood worm every other day since my new blue dreams were also in there with them and I intended for those to start breeding.
And I was feeding them Bassleer Forte to help them recover from transit stress.

I have a male and female apistogramma macmasteri as a breeding pair in a 10 gallon planted tank. They haven't spawned yet but have been in there since Jan 14, 2024. Recently the male has turned almost completely dark purple almost black. He is staying in the front of the glass where I can see him and he keeps displaying mating behavior with the female but he seems to be shaking more vigorously than in the past, Is this normal or is it something I need to take action on?
    Water Parameters:
    Ammonia 0
    Nitrite 0
    Nitrate 0
    PH 6.4
    GH >301 ppm
    KH 0

I purchased about 12 guppies once at a LFS. All but one were dead the next morning. They were added to a community tank and actually took a few other fish that were already in the tank with them, but not many. Not sure what the issue was. The remaining 1 guppy got pregnant and had fry, is still alive but has scoliosis since giving birth.
After this experience, I do quarantine 1st, although I haven't had many new additions from external sources to a tank that already has stock. I also am squimish to purhcase fish from this store now as I have another LFS with better expierence from purchases.

I've watched several videos on why you can't keep different Cichlids together. Like Mbuna and Peacock in the same tank. I know they have different diets, but if they can live in the wild together why can't we keep them in the tank together.

I went to petsmart yesterday and the girl told me I couldn’t put a pleco in with my guppies or in my mollies tank. She said it would eat the guppies. Also she said I would need a 125 gallon tank for the pleco. They had 15-20 in that little 5 gallon tank. I understand they grow but she didn’t say as it grows your tank will be to small and you would need to get a bigger tank. So will it eat my guppies? I have multiple tanks and they are all live planted tanks.

Where did my fish go after it died? Bones and all are gone. Does a well seasoned tank take care of it? Or did the other community fish eat it?

Ive seen at my LFS, people saying their not going home right away, or they live far away, at no extra charge they will bag them with oxygen instead of air and offer and insulated shipping box if its cold out. So make sure if your in this situation, you let the store know how long you think it will be before you get home
