Very useful. Approaches and arrivals confuse me somewhat. This does help. I shall follow this tutorial tonight. Last time I tried an approach the autopilot had me going in endless circles. 😂
I'm sure you figured it out, but some approaches have a holding pattern on intercept. Once you intercept the approach, the GPS will continue to hold until you go into your flight plan (FPL button), select the next waypoint (below HOLD), and click the direct to button, then click activate. This will get you out of the hold and to continue the approach in case other people have this issue.
@@Huddison I flew it mostly successfully. I had some issues with the vertical navigation part. It seemed like it would work and then not work (MY issue, not the simulator). But I will fly it again. I just need to grasp all that is going on. All else was successful. Fun. I love learning this stuff. [UPDATE] - flew it a second time successfully. Both times the FLC turned itself off after takeoff. The first time I was behind the plane trying to get caught up. The second time I realized what happened and it worked great. Now a NEW route somewhere else! And with different planes! RedRuffinsore (Jim)
Another great tutorial vid' mate. My Cessna failed to descend on AP on the last leg approach to Heathrow but no doubt an error between the keyboard and the chair.
What a wonderful video thanks. Even after months of practice, I still get rusty on the correct 'order' of things with the G1000 ILS approaches (esp if I have a few months off the sim!). Question: there are an insane amount of options when it comes to flight planning (built-in World Map, Little Navmap, Simbrief, or even simply programming the G1000 approach in the cockpit like you did in this video) - what's your most effective goto method you find for an 'easy' flight plan between two airports? I often confuse myself (analysis paralysis!) when it comes to trying different approaches to flight planning. Everyone seems to have their own preferred method. Then ATC (whilst great for adding immersion) just gives you ridiculous high altitudes for an approach to a regional airport in the 172. It all adds to the confusion....(which is probably why you turn ATC off!) Sometimes you just want a simple flight (20-30mins) and you want a reliable goto method that is repeatable without having to spend 30 mins researching videos on how to use that tool, planner, instrument etc).
Thanks. Probably the easiest method to plan a quick flight, is through the MSFS World Map. If I want to plan a more complex flight plan, I tend to use Navigraph: ua-cam.com/video/PU311Zly3QI/v-deo.html Go with what's easiest for you and slowly migrate to the more complex flight planners.
The recent update from late June broke the magenta altitude readout on the upper right of the display. Along with the other VNAV and GPS low-altitude IFR issues I mentioned in the other video comments. 😢
Same here on Xbox version. As in previous video with the 172 the magenta altitude display still not appearing. Reassuring in a way that it’s not just happening to me!
Great video. Thanks. I saw that there were two fixes along the approach that had the same name, BIG9.0. Not sure why they would duplicate a fix name on the approach. Any ideas?
What knob did you use to change on Multi Purpose Panel to change your final fix attitude to 2500 feet? Brilliant flight planning with the G1000. I'm the guy that couldn't figure the range knob equivalent from X-plane to MSFS using the mouse wheel to do for the range. Rather than X-Plane using the the left mouse button to change. Hah! Same equipment, just different techniques. Flight sim programs do this but all the same. Thanks James
I move the switch on the far left of the Multi Panel to the 'ALT' position to change Altitude (then use the large silver knob to change the actual alt number) - hope this helps ;)
Another top notch tutorial video. I followed this exactly other than I was in the 172.. I meant to get in the Caravan but forgot so just went ahead anyway. The altitudes were slightly didn’t to yours though. What I found was that once I had taken off, got myself levelled out and switched AP and Nav on the plane just keep going round it circles.. it didn’t seem to be able to find the route at all. I took manual control but found the trim had gone nuts and was set to 69%!! I managed to wrestle it back under control and then manually got myself back towards the flight path at which point I switched AP and Nav back on and then all was good. It followed the designated ILS route perfectly and took me to Heathrow. It did seem to keep me too high for the final approach but I did manage to get it down safely in the end. Any idea about the weird AP behaviour at the start?
I went back to it and this time in the Caravan but it was a bit of a mess. Same problem as in the 172 in that as soon as I went into AP and Nav mode the aircraft just kept swinging left the right constantly as though trying to find the correct path. The trim went nuts just as it did in the 172 zooming up to 83% and sending the aircraft into a stall and I had to really struggle to get the aircraft back under control and stable. Eventually I turned the AP and Nav back on and it got it on track and was following the flight path to Heathrow but the VNAV would not bring it down to the altitudes at each juncture. Eventually I had to take manual control again and then quit out and will try again another time. Very odd behaviour.. This is of course in MSFS 2024.
@ Both flights were very odd after the takeoff and had exactly the same issue in the two different aircraft. I’ll try another tomorrow and hold off turning on the AP and Nav until a bit further into the flight. The Caravan although picking up the flight path once I got this under control never looked like it was going to change altitude at any point. The 172 was fine in that respect.
An update to this is that tonight I tried this again and the swerving behaviour at the start once auto-pilot was switched on happened again but not anywhere near as much. It just seemed like it was unsure of the start of the route and swerved a few times until it locked on. After that everything went very smoothly as per your video and ended with probably my smoothest landing yet. Very satisfying. I’ll try further next time using different airports.

But, my autopilot panel had no lights next to each button to show if anything was on or off. Also, my LOC didn't activate on final, I had to click the CDI button. And APP was shown in green but the approach mode button said it was off. Oh and the altitude did not want to know with the ILS. It stuck on 2500ft and would not change. Had to go back around and manually land. I'm thinking I might just give up with ILS. Cannot get it working no matter what. Hi, I have a problem with the mouse and my Thrustmaster, I also have the connected controller that I use only for free views, but I use more only the mouse and the Thrustmaster, the problem is that they conflict when I use them simultaneously, if as an example I have to click with the mouse any button of the plane and while I'm doing it I move the yoke or click a yoke button, the white dot of the controller begins to appear, and the arrow of the mouse disappears, Basically the movement I do with the yoke turns off the mouse until I touch the mouse again, and if I touch both all the time it starts to go crazy of course. I hope it is understood, do you know how to solve?
@ROOSTER_001 I had conflicts with certain controllers and my gamepad on my Series S. I suggest just using the mouse for cockpit interactions and your flight controller for aircraft functions.
