Excellent work Mr. Low! I received my first deck about 20 years ago from my mother, which was the Waite/Smith deck. I wasn’t extremely consistent with my readings until about six years ago. Now I have about 25 decks. “Oracle” as well as (and mostly) tarot. I’ve heard some readers say that there are secret meanings in some of the images and colors on the Waite smith deck. I would love a video, that takes a deeper look into the intuitive meanings behind these symbols. Thank you for a very polished and educational piece on this amazing tools history.😊🙏🏼 - I just found your 2 new videos! Hooray🥳🥹🥂🧙🏻♂️
Colin Low I wanted to ask you what your book ‘Playing the Fool’ is about. Is it about Tarot in general or specifically Hermetic Golden Dawn style? I’m not sure from the Amazon description if it’s a novel or a book about the history of Tarot. Also, is there a kindle version going to be released soon?
It is a narrative with the Fool as the central character, and the Trump cards take on the attributes they had in the Renaissance period (as interpreted by me). So for example, the Sun card represents not only the day, but also kingship, the divine, refined culture, reason, right proportion. When Louis XIV was dubbed "the Sun King" it was because he wished to be seen as embodying these classical principles. The suits represent the four estates: the nobility, the church, merchants, and the peasant folk. Because the central character is the Fool, it is told "foolishly"; that is, the Fool has license to make fun of life, to prick the pompous, to turn things on their head, to tell uncomfortable truths (as medieval Fools were licensed to do). I hope that helps :-)
Thank you so much. This sounds like an interesting book. I will order it from Amazon for sure. Thank you again for your explanation. Please post more videos. The Tarot community need this level of quality.
This was amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed it :D Very concise, packed full of useful information and extremely well researched. Thank you for taking the time to share!
m getting back into tarot after getting discouraged and then finding a few packs that really resonate with me and kind of developing my own skill with them. Now I'm on a journey of possibly becoming a practitioner in that journey and want to know more about the cards not just how the read but where they come from historically and this was a great resource
Dear Colin, I have been enjoying your book The Hermetic Kabbalah and have similarly enjoyed all the material on your channel. You have a way of explaining esoteric concepts in a manner that is both scholarly and accessible to a newcomer like myself. Another Colin - the author Colin Wilson - opened the doors for me but your book, like this video, explores a much deeper tradition without losing any of the accessibility and sense of intellectual adventure.
This was such a good history. Thank you so much for the book recommendations, and the detail you went into this. It was a refreshing experience, and I appreciated the humor added in.
Interesting video on Tarot and it's origins . Whilst the source of tarot is believed to be Egyptian I find it fascinating that the tarot that has now emerged is developing as a popular belief system mixing together ancient religious practices and modern day fortune telling. Modern day aspects of tarot can become compulsive viewing for those who need to have their lives controlled and mapped out with a touch of magic but it can be misused in the hands of the unscrupulous. The strength of power that it can bestow lies within the interpretation of the symbols and images on the printed cards that a good imaginative reader can present with mis-placed conviction, possibly. The power of the reader albeit for entertainment purposes so called, can carry weight if directed in a certain manner, and partularly if the recipient is of an impressionable and disturbed mindset. This video is a valuable thing if only to be used as a cautionary item and to remind readers that modern tarot is an invented item for entertainment only.
Very good! Not only did I learn a lot from your talk, but you introduced me to a number of books that had previously escaped my attention. The story of how Francesco Sforza was able to "finesse his marriage" to the daughter of the Duke of Milan to become the new Duke reminds me very much of the film "Barry Lyndon" by Stanley Kubrick which I saw not long ago. It too tells the story of how a "jumped up" pleb named Redmond Barry was able to manipulate his way through to marrying into nobility and eventually to rise to take control of a hereditary estate to become Barry Lyndon (not that it turned out very well for him in the end). It makes me think that in that time of various wars and vying princely estates, such stories must not have been uncommon.
I've been reading about the NeoPlatonic - Hermetic Movement They believed that the human being was in essence a microcosm of the greater universe Self Knowledge of the soul. From the Greeks First dictum "know thy self" Carved above the door way of Apollo's Temple at Delphi . Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ❤ I really got a lot out of your presentation.
I've seen lots of these Tarot histories, and was therefore expecting this one to be yet another yawn .WELL DONE! This was really interesting and elucidating!
@@colinlow1167, the only thing I have not found yet, and this is clearly outside the scope of your video here, is non-divination uses for the Tarot. I keep hearing commentators saying that divination (fortune telling) is the least of the benefits, that contemplative/meditative uses of it is much richer and more powerful. If ever you came across descriptions/instructions to that effect, that would be wonderful to learn about!
@@robintropper660Ah! I take the position, as explained in the video, that the Tarot existed as a card game long before it was appropriated into the general trend of post-Renaissance Hermeticism. To wit: there is an ancient wisdom of Egypt, from which the Bible (via Moses) and Greek philosophy (via Pythagoras etc) derive much of their core wisdom. This was discredited in the 17th C, was revived again with Freemasonry in the late 18th C, and was in continuous development in the 19th C, culminating with various occult versions of the Tarot that merge the imagery of the card game with esoteric notions, creating "The Book of Thoth", the original reconstructed wisdom of the Ancient Egyptians (TM) (previously hid from the plebs in the guise of a card game). This has all been traced in tedious detail by Dummett, Decker etc. The contemplative advantages of the cards come from assimilating the worldview of later authors who merged large quantities of esoteric material and included with it the Tarot. An excellent example would be the merging of the Tarot and Kabbalah by members of the 19th C Golden Dawn. These ideas have had two centuries of development, and there is a substantial literature that treats the Kabbalah and Tarot as deeply and intrinsically connected. If you wish to explore this I would suggest something like John Greer's Paths of Wisdom. Or just type Kabbalah and Tarot in Google and go weep :-)

Thank you for such an informative video! The history of Tarot is fascinating!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)
Colin Low I wanted to ask you what your book ‘Playing the Fool’ is about.
I do plan to ... I have the content. Thanks.
Awesome! Super informative and interesting. Thank you!
I love tarot💞
Thank you for this video!!!
Excellent. Thank you for sharing the knowledge in such a straightforward presentation.
TY :-)
This was amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed it :D Very concise, packed full of useful information and extremely well researched. Thank you for taking the time to share!
Thank you, and I am glad you enjoyed it!
This was absolutely brilliant, thank you Colin! So informative and in depth!
Absolutely brilliant. I very much enjoyed this history lesson on the tarot. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!
Glad you enjoyed it!
m getting back into tarot after getting discouraged and then finding a few packs that really resonate with me and kind of developing my own skill with them. Now I'm on a journey of possibly becoming a practitioner in that journey and want to know more about the cards not just how the read but where they come from historically and this was a great resource
Thanks - I'm gradually adding to it by making videos on individual Trumps.
Lovely swagger through tarot history, voice and visual poetry.
Thank you :-)
What an amazing video! Mr. Low, thank you for being such a good teacher, I didn't want the video to end. Can't wait for the next class 🙂
Thank you!
I'm glad you are finding my stuff useful. I should have another video out in a few weeks.
@@colinlow1167 Look forward to it. I've subscribed to your channel.
This was such a good history. Thank you so much for the book recommendations, and the detail you went into this. It was a refreshing experience, and I appreciated the humor added in.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I could listen to his voice for hours lol. David Attenborough type of shit. LOVE IT
Me too!!! David Attenborough style!!!
A fantastic lesson, thank you! I learned more from this than any other instructional video I've seen. Quite a gift!
I'm pleased you found it useful. Best wishes.
Very good! Not only did I learn a lot from your talk, but you introduced me to a number of books that had previously escaped my attention. Thanks to the miracle of the internet, and Amazon, I actually ordered the books while listening to your presentation. And so, your teaching and influence will go on indefinitely in my household. I only wish I could have gotten a closer look at that earring you're wearing!
Thank you. I bought the earring in Seattle in 2003 :-)
Interesting and beautiful. Thank you !
Thanks! Great video. I tried other sources, but it was a bunch New Age rambling that had clearly not been researched at all.
Wow, such a great talk. The attention to detail is very welcome and rare. Really hope you can get into regular video making 🙏
Such a strong lecture, hugely appreciated 🙏
TY!
Was recommended and pleased I came across to watch it! A series is required....
Thank you. Watch this space. I'm currently writing a book set in the Renaissance, but plan to spend some time this winter on Tarot videos.
@@colinlow1167 it’s cost a fortune and it’s the most I’ve ever paid but I ordered “Twelve Tarot Games” & the equally costly “A Wicked Pack of Cards”
Look forward to seeing/reading more
@@Richard_Boo Ouch ... it looks like the price has gone up, and by a lot :-(
@@colinlow1167 it’ll be worth it :)
I was already loving your video and then you said you feel sorry for the poor lion, I was like yeah I knew I liked this gentleman lol. hope to see more from you!
your video presentations are BRILLIANT! Thank you! I need to get some of your books now, as their reviews are fantastic and just by the way you have presented here, it's no surprise either
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this wonderful talk, I’ve learned a great deal 👌🙏
Thank you!
Very informative and contextual. Great explanation and thank you for including your sources!
TY!
I am grateful to learn this history sir Colin. You have cleared much confusion with this video. You peak interest beyond the simple meaning of the cards . Thank you so very much for sharing this valuable research. Your generosity is amazing
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you! This was exactly what I was looking for, and I’ll be recommending it to others who want to know more about the Tarot’s origins
Enjoyed this immensely well researched and understood. For the people in the comments as well looking for more well curated content, Esoterica is a very good channel :) Thanks Colin enjoyed this a lot.
Thank you! Yes, Esoterica is excellent, I listen myself. Best wishes,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful travel through tarot history. I enjoyed this so much - great research, great examples, great storytelling. You're a gem. 🖤
TY!
I really enjoy this video❤ Thank you for putting so much work on this. Looking forward to more🌷
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Let us please keep this person's knowledge and video alive
Thank you so much for this wonderfully researched and delivered history of the Tarot. Absolutely fascinating. I'm an artist toying with creating my own version of tarot - among so many others. It's amazing how accurate the cards can be with a gifted reader. I know this is purely looking at the history - which is wonderful, but I'd love to know your thoughts on the divining powers of the cards and how they work with the subconscious. Thank you so much, I'm humbled by your knowledge and excellent eloquently delivered talk.
I am glad it was useful for you :-)
Awesome expo - kudos! And the glowy green screen effect makes you look like a Welsh jedi. Jedi Master Andunie!
Scottish ... I am most definitely Scottish :-)
This was phenomenal! I hope you continue to make videos!
Oh, I will, I'm just enjoying summer atm
Thank you for your scholarly explanation on the history of tarot. I would love to learn more! I wish there were more videos to listen to
Hopefully in the future you would consider creating more. There is so much misinformation out there, for those seeking truth, it is refreshing to hear a well researched snd documented account. Thank you sir.
Hi, I added a video on the Death Trump fairly recently :-)
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, sir.
This video is so informative it basically saved me years and years of research, especially because I’m such a slow reader. Incredible work!
You are welcome, glad you found it useful.
I wish you made more videos. You are so nice to learn from.
I hope to make more.
Absolutely fabulous explanations on the Tart.Thankyou
Thank for sharing your expertise. I have been reading long enough to want to plow deeply into this literature. I look forward to any more work you share and have subscribed and liked.
Glad you liked it 🙂
GREAT explanation of the taort's history. A lot of information I've never heard before. 👍 Very knowledgeable.
You are very welcome ..
Hi, thank you for this video. I got myself a deck recently and started exploring 😎
I think it's a great way to discover yourself 😃
I've got this Journal (Journaling with Tarot: Self-discovery with Tarot Cards prompts by Nicholaus Sherkha) I don't know if anyone used it, but I'm happy to recommend it- I'm already few pages in.
Does anyone have other books/journals to recommend?
Xoxo
I 🥰 Barry Lyndon
This is fascinating. Ty. Those hand painted cards, the time that must've taken
The best history of Tarot on youtube. Thanks.
thank you for this video Colin, thank you for sharing knowledge in a way that is easy to understand!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I've been reading about the NeoPlatonic - Hermetic Movement They believed that the human being was in essence a microcosm of the greater universe Self Knowledge of the soul. From the Greeks First dictum "know thy self" Carved above the door way of Apollo's Temple at Delphi . Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ❤ I really got a lot out of your presentation.
I needed this video. I'm looking toward making a video game utilizing the tarot heavily
I've seen lots of these Tarot histories, and was therefore expecting this one to be yet another yawn .WELL DONE! This was really interesting and elucidating!
Thank you!
Loved it sir.. it's a blessing to have you share the details n intrigue facts about tarot.. have saved Ur video n will always refer to it..
Thank you, glad you found it useful :-)
finally something i can understand and its lovely how you presented this thank you

Absolutely adore the location you shot this in.
ah .... the study :-)
@@colinlow1167 that's THE STUDY!? oh my word... Now I have to fly from South Africa and come and spend time with you in your study! Pretty sure it’s green screen haha
@@vegancoastie9630 Agreed. But it is stunning and a perfect choice. I've been thinking about how I could add some morphing furniture that could be hidden away so I could live there and still get a library out of it, where I then would host Colin Low in a series of (definitely paid) lectures.
