I'm going to a Plein Air painting on the Connecticut River between Colebrook & Pittsburgh, NH this morning. I've been watching your tutorials in hopes I can do a better painting than I usually do. Knowing this was painted in NH helps!! Thanks for your tutorials.
This is a favorite of mine, great sky ... great all of it, stream is beautiful. Not feeling on top of the world today so I needed to rest a bit and watch Rick!
I love to watch your videos because you take the time to explain each stroke and each color. This is so helpful for those of us that are in the process of learning. Thank you for the time you took to help your followers. This makes me so inspired to paint. Have a wonderful day😊
Thank you for generously sharing your time and amazing talent with this video. I love how you explain things in such a detailed manner, explaining the process thoroughly. Watercolor is hard to self-teach and I appreciate being able to learn from your videos. This painting is absolutely beautiful, I love the light and how it sparkles through the entire piece, and the colors that are vibrant but realistic. Wow!
An exceptional tutorial with detailed descriptions of why certain elements are painted in a particular way ....the result being a fantastic composition.
Not only is this a beautiful picture, this tutorial was really helpful with being thoughtful with the masking fluid and in setting up the washes prior to starting sections of the painting. Many thanks Rick!
Stunning! Beautiful! Perfect! It's amazing how you transformed all the splatter into tree leaves, sky and rock texture but that sparkling water is mesmerizing. I've seen people produce sparkle in ocean scenes by taking a brush filled with pigment and swiftly swiping across a rough canvas. I cannot thank you enough for sharing this method - for sharing all of it.
So many times in the painting, I thought it was perfect....and then you would change it again and it just kept on improving! It was such a pleasure to share the process with you. I enjoyed your constant explanations of not only what you were doing, but also why. Thank you so much. 👍
I've been watching your video's. I love your approach to teaching I've taken college classes that didnt teach half of what I learned from you. Cool style you are a great artist. Nice teaching style Very logical Thank you
This has been so helpful as I am in the middle of a similar landscape. Landscapes are not my forte and I really love this detailed teaching. Thank you!
Man, you are crushing it on your youtube page. Easily some of the best watercolor instruction on the web. I saw you in the latest edition of Watercolor magazine! Thanks for generously sharing your experience.
This tutorial is outstanding. Your generosity in sharing your experience and thoughtful instruction is appreciated. Your work is beautiful, as always. Thank you
BTW this is Lally. Please dont shorten or time lapse your videos we don't mind the length of your videos, because it is packed with valuable information for us aspiring artists I love the detailed instructions you so kindly give us. I am so glad I stumbled onto your video. Thanks again Rick
I love your videos. I finally found someone who likes to clean there pallet. Now I know I can with out thinking I’m all wrong. Can’t get enough of your great instruction!
We have a cabin on Lake of the woods which has a similar look. I loved this painting with all the light, it just sparkles. I'm new to watercolor and appreciate your in depth explanations and color choices. This one particular is so beautiful. Thanks
Hi Rick, it’s Julie! This is my favorite painting to date! And the length if the video is sheer benefit for all the learning we receive!! Thank you Rick. So grateful 🎨
You are extraordinary, your work is exceptional ... I love seeing you !!! Your UA-cam page, without wanting to detract from anyone, is the best structured and organized I've seen ... Thanks a million for sharing with us your work and your experience, they are a gift !!!!
Hello. Greetings from the Philippines. Thank you for sharing your wonderful video. Such a beautiful painting. Your talent is truly impressive. Have a great day.
Rick just finished this one and wow!!! my rocks look like they belong and for the first time ever I feel like ..hey this works. You are awesome and I can't thank you enough!!!!
I just discovered you and this is one of the most beautiful paintings I've seen! I love your narrating style and it's very helpful to see how you prepare your colors, use your brushes, and approach your composition. Thank you so much! I will subscribe now.
A really good and helpful tutorial. Everything seems to be quite natural and smooth, even that when you are alone in front of your painting things are not as easy. Anyway, it is worth to watch the video.
Thanks for showing your palette! A lot going on in this painting. I want to try it, but think I may practice some of the elements separately before putting it all together. The dark values you put in on the water on the left surprised me, but they were needed and worked so well! Very helpful tutorial. Thanks!
Longest tutorial I ever watched and never got bored for one second! Excellent instruction! I learned so much! I'm going to paint rocks and water for the first time today. :)
As a relative ‘newbie’ to watercolour, I find your tutorials so helpful. I am in an art group here in North West Durham (England) but feel I have learned so much more from you! Thank you for sharing your talent so generously. Lesley Hughes
I just painted along with you, and and was surprised to see only 8 minutes devoted to finishing this painting after the frisket was removed. I wish it was a little longer, because this was a really important part of the process.
Rick this is so packed with amazing information., I'm trying to work on this juxtaposition of Warms/Cools/Darks/Lights thank you for this very very helpful walk through.
Outstanding artistically and educationally. You impart so much info in a very inspiring, easy manner..Thank you for your generosity in sharing your talent, techniques, knowledge and years of experience.
This is one of the best demos I've seen. I really appreciate how you explain what you're doing and why. I had a Fineline masking applicator, but found it blew bubbles unpredictably. You make me want to give it another go - thanks!
What a fantastic lesson! Thank you so much for a really detailed lesson. This was really helpful and I learned a lot that will really improve my next painting! :D I especially appreciate the step by step explanations of not only what to do but why to do it that way and the color mixing is very helpful as well. As another person remarked, no this is NOT too long! :D For my acrylic tutorials, I regularly watch videos that are 2-3 hours long ( the longest I have watched was 7 hours. :)
Hi Rick, That was absolutely beautiful to watch. You are a very talented artist. Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us. I liked the color mixing and the names of the colors you used. Please can you advise what are the main colors to start with and what brushes I should have, without expensive ones like Kolinsky (sp) ones. Thank you again!
I would recommend a warm and cool version of the primaries (red, blue, yellow), a few earth tones such as raw sienna, raw umber. I also like sap green as a convenience green. As far as brushes, Princeton has a few excellent series of synthetic sable and squirrel that are reasonably priced (Aqua Elite and Neptune). I list these on the studio page of my website where I list all the materials I use. rsurowiczart.com/studio/
Thank you, Rick. I’ll need to pick this up again tomorrow. I’m 83 yrs. and need to retire, b’cause it’s getting pretty late for me. Will I be able to do this? A fellow painter.
You're an excellent teacher. This is one of my favorite paintings that you've done, although it's difficult to narrow it down. Great work! Thanks, Rick.

Great tutorial video! I'm also loving your palette. I like how big the mixing wells are. May I ask what palette this is? Thank you! Edit: found it in your website. Thanks again!
Thanks Michael! I have both the plastic and porcelain version. I use the plastic version outdoors and when traveling a distance. I prefer the porcelain version. It makes nice pools of color, cleans easily, and doesn't stain.

I want that palette. I don't have a clue where to put it on my desk as I know the size is huge :P But I want it it,lol I am still painting with my first dots on the mijello palette from ds. I know just how I would use it too. I would put my ds tubes in it but as that is 18 rest gonna be filled with my favorite gouache :D
