      yea they are tough because if they aren't then what are they gonna do when they are in high stress situations such as war? cause right now when people in the military encounter hardship they don't think its hard they think this isn't as bad as that hellhole of basic so I can easily do this

      @Aniwayas Song I know my original comment sounds a bit harsh but I said it in reaction to the lady in the video. She seemed shocked at how the soldiers were treated in boot camp or that racial slurs were used. These aren't pre-teens at summer camp, they are adults being trained to be Marines.
      I used the term 'obedient killers' in the same way you described it. They are extremely well trained to follow orders to get the job done. They use their intelligence and decision making to decide how to complete their orders in the best way possible.
      I used the word 'killers' as that is their main purpose but only to kill the enemy of course. Yes the military can be used in situations to help keep the peace or to deliver needed supplies to areas hit by natural disasters but above all they exist to kill the enemy. That should not ever be forgotten.
      I have massive respect for everybody who was or still is in the military. I'm sure the vast majority of them do not want to kill anybody and I know a lot of them suffer psychologically from the things they have to do but they do it because it needs to be done.

    • @k1llsh0t_87
      @k1llsh0t_87 3 роки тому +1

      @Aniwayas Song you do realize like all throughout boot camp you are basically taught they are training you to be killers right?

    • @Mr.Batsu12
      @Mr.Batsu12 3 роки тому

      @Aniwayas Song I'm glad I was able to explain myself, at least somewhat. :D I didn't want my original statement to come across as a negative in any way. Sure, in an ideal word it would be great if we didn't need a military for any other purpose than humanitarian aid for natural disasters but that's not the world we live in. There are evil people in the world, even if they don't see their actions as being evil, and a country needs to be ready to defend itself to protect against violent actions, incursion and to ensure it's freedoms.
      We do live in 'interesting times' and it's a shame. I remember it wasn't too long ago when you would never hear politicians endorsing terrorism or talking negatively about our own country. The seeds of communism have been planted far and wide in America and it's disgusting to see so many people being fine with that. Good talking to you!

    You didn’t grow up “in the military”, you grew up NEAR it. Soldiers have to be able to look at another human being through a rifle sight and be able to pull the trigger so the guy next to them doesn’t get killed. You have to dehumanize a person to some extent for them to be able to do that. This also makes them a team, they have a common focus. It’s all done for a reason, to keep them alive.

    • @rottytherottski522

      Old comment but yeah pretty much, they could feel comfortable and relaxed but die in a few weeks or months. Or they could feel very uncomfortable and push through it and be able to live 50 more years. It will also be a lot more brutal when those guys go from being relaxed with everyone talking nice to ten people screaming at eachother with explosions going off and seeing chunks of bodies or blood. If they aren't mentally prepared then you will see people completely mentally break and if they survive they will be fucked forever. This gives a chance for mental fortitude training so that they can hopefully stay strong and go home to a normal life after. Being eased into war vs throwing you into the deep end and seeing if you drown.

It teaches how to perform under stress, gives motivation, and forces them to learn to work together, almost like the DI becomes “the enemy” and they have to rely on each other the way they would in a real world situation. There’s no room for sensitivity in the military, despite what congress has been trying to do lately.

    Nothing personal but unfortunately it's that kind of sentiment that changed the way training is done in the military and has weakened it. I had 3 drills just like this and as tough as they were i wouldn't have changed anything. The military needs more drills like this. That's the best way to weed out the ones not mentally tough to be infantry and go to war. A platoon is only as strong as their weakest member.

    Think of it this way. Gunnery Ermey had a few weeks to get these recruits up to a level of training where they didn’t die in the first day in Viet Nam. Drill Instructors had to read reports of the guys they trained, dying over there. So if they felt that a punch in the gut or harsh language might get the recruit to focus and be better, that’s what they would do.

    You guys have some good conversations regarding what goes in in the clip and both of you make good points. As a Marine (84-90), I can tell you that two of the main reasons the drill instructors speak to the recruits the way they do is 1. Instant response. The goal is to condition the recruit to respond to and obey a command from instantly, without hesitation. Every aspect of boot camp is presented from the point of view of, "what if this situation comes up while you are on the battlefield"? Even a second of hesitation could mean your death and/or your fellow Marine's death. And 2. What if you're captured. From the very beginning of the Marine Corps (the Corps is actually older than our country!), it has been considered the "tip of the spear" of our military. We are almost always the first to go into enemy territory (especially when it comes to ground forces). So that increases the likelyhood of capture. Marine Corps philosophy is to "toughen you up", mentally and physically, in order to increase the likelihood that you'll survive capture. And history has proven that to be true; Marines have statistically been shown to be more likely to live through being a POW.

    This is the way they should still train, my Drill was just like this and he weeded out the ones that wouldn't make it. If you grew up in the military it couldn't have been in the ARMY or Marines, cause up to the 90's they still trained this way. It became pc and went to shit because everyone suddenly got they feelings hurt. Nothing but pu**ies nowadays.

    Yeah you need to make it as stressful as possible so when recruits inevitably end up in a combat situation they are a) desensitized to chaos and b) have been equally abused and have built up a comradery, respect and trust amongst themselves so they can fight in a more effective manner.

      By not starting wars that need this kind of training, where the "tough" ones make it through just to kill innocent people, and people who question or feel shame are weeded out or worse like with Pyle. By keeping our "defense" budget limited to actual defense. If there is ever a military attack on US soil people will be motivated by the need to save their families and actually defend the country, not just to continue meddling overseas, I have no doubt.
      For now though kids are far more at risk from problems at home than any foreign power, they go to school with Pyle type kid who has access to his dad's gun and is bullied just like you see in the movie, these are the risks today. Sure we should still thank our veterans for our safety but if this "freedom" means bombing kids overseas then what are we really doing here? They complain "oh you've gotten soft," well then let us get hard again, stop starting wars overseas and let's see what happens, I mean it, the day we are truly under attack and not the aggressors is the day we will see unity and everyone backing the military. We can thank our veterans without condoning the horrors of war or the inhumane tactics used to get young men to fight unjust wars because the causes were not motivating enough in and of themselves.

      Thank you for your response. Diatride continues here...
      1) We are absolutely soft and over-consumptive, and the military industrial complex enables it like an entitled parent spoiling its child. Countries and peoples fear the U.S. and our allies, allowing us to exploit them and control a disproportionate amount of the worlds wealth and resources, which leads to, among other things, "guzzling soy lattes."
      In a true crisis though I stand by the ability for people to adapt and change very quickly. My great grandpa was textbook "soft" guy on paper- a sociology professor at a small liberal arts college with no military training. He ended up willingly and enthusiastically joining WWII and dying for his country though, uprooting his whole life to do so very quickly.
      2) How you prepare depends on what war you are preparing for. Also, we aren't just "preparing" and in wait, we are attacking constantly, causing 310K+ civilian casualties alone in the last two decades. The US been at war for hundreds of years with next to no break.

      @@emmabrown2746 Apologies if the "diatribe" comment ruffled any feathers. I do agree with you on one level.. I do believe we have fought too many wars for too long. And frequently for the wrong reasons. I just believe the world is unendingly dangerous and we have to be prepared and vigilant and carry the biggest stick.
      I do still disagree with you however on the ability of the present populace to rise to the occasion if necessary. Obviously there will be a core of competents, but the %ages have declined since the days of my grandparents, parents and my own era. I have to refer again to the 17 18 & 19 yr olds who need safe spaces crying rooms stuffed animals and counselors if someone says something that offends their delicate sensitivities. Unfortunately their numbers are legion .. and they are not the type to run to the sound of battle if our land is invaded. They would be more likely to collaborate with the invaders and turn on the resisting citizens. (I'm sticking with your defense-only scenario here).
      We may just have to agree to disagree on some points here.

    In Marine Corps boot camp, most platoons have a Senior Drill Instructor and 2 to 3 other DI's of lower rank. The DI is doing everything he/she can to make the recruits not only hate but fear them because it forces the recruits to learn to work together with each other, whether they like each other or not.
