  • In this episode of Garden Talk, I interview BluegrassGreenthumb. He is big into the natural farming approach and he’s also big into plant science. In this episode he talks about a lot of plant science that isn’t really taught or even talked about much. What plants do you like to grow? Peppers, citrus trees, house plants, lettuce, carrots, let us know in the comments section below. If you enjoyed this video please click that thumbs up button :)

I'd really love for you to get another DWC grower on the show. I'd also love to hear you have growers talk about seed banks and what to avoid. One of the hardest parts about getting started is finding the right genetics. I spent lots on my lights and grow tent and skimped on the genetics and it's something I want people to avoid without having to call out any particular brand. Thanks for your content!

It's interesting to hear y'all talking about adapting a particular cultvare to a new environment (41:22). I remember back in the early 70's when these cats in Southern California had imported a certain Indica strain to grow locally. It proved to be kinda difficult bc the latitude, elevation, soil, and climate were all so different. It took a while, but soon enough that original "bloodline" was growing, in different hybrids, up and down the state. From Fallbrook to Humboldt, and many, many other locals, growers had created new strains for their particular microclimate. It was an amazing time to be part of the "community". It's very cool how this "community" has evolved into a much more scientific approach to growing.

And was kind of confused that some don't believe epigenetics.. I mean what's not to believe it? And it's kind of not a debatable wether you believe or not. Animals are driven by epigenetic factors, it's big part of evolution and it has big role how genes expresses itself in different environments.

I was once in a large field of natural weed in Bhutan. The main use for it there is for animal feed they say it keeps the pigs happy, but some hash is made too. It was early summer so nothing was budding except one plant. It was really sticking out above the rest and of course I needed to investigate. I dried and smoked it and I don't recall if it had seeds but it stoned me real good. I have wondered about the one plant in a field of thousands, why was that one and only that one blooming early.? Genetics most likely.

Ground up plain oats can be sprinkled into transplant holes - sparingly though - it’s supposed to act as a rooting stimulant - although only anecdotal, no hard science on it. As mentioned, sparingly shouldn’t be a problem. It’ll help promote fungal growth regardless, so that in itself should theoretically increase the uptake of nutrients to encourage more roots, cos they’ll attach to the fungi like how Mykos and Great White work (inoculation).
There’s also people that say it’s useful for soil dressing keeping pests away, it’s alleged to expand when ingested - but, not many bugs would eat it anyway, they’re after live plant material. Only the soil microbes would be affected… but not negatively depending how much you use. But again, oats usually become a fungal/mold ‘enhancement’
Just for the record, I’ve sprinkled some into holes. Can’t say I noticed a growth spurt but it didn’t do any harm to the plants.

I've had some issues with sugar ants and root mealybugs in my grow before, so using Knf recipes, which all use brown sugar, seems like a risk to me. How do you manage that in an outdoor potted grow?

You always use FPJ and vinegar 1:1 for this reason. Also the dilution is 1:500. So just under 8ml per gallon of water.

Insect Frass is basically broken down decomposed bugs. That’s sold as a soil feed. Bugs die all the time in nature and fall to the foot of trees. Coincidentally where rainfall soaks it into soils. That’s natures tea right there. Also, even precipitation affects certain species. Sea water helps produce hydrologic cycles that contribute to earth’s water cycle. That water is chock filled with minerals and (micro/macro) nutrients.
So yeah, food for thought. Keep that in mind.

All good. It’s like when people use banana teas, that’s the same as over ripened bananas falling out the tree and fertilising the ground. The same as dead leaves (ex: compost tea). There’s also certain auxins and acids that plants produce, that we try to mimic all the time. Those are essentially just concentrated plant juices plants normally produce. Not so much a “tea” per se, but still a natural concoction of minerals. Something we copy on the regular. Too many examples to name

KNF to me is people basically saying "I can't tell you exactly how this works but trust me. Just follow this process exactly and don't question anything. Any and all questions will be answered by either 1. Its microbes 2. The soil knows what its doing 3. Nature knows better that you." To me it's more faith based than science based and I'm an atheist

    • @bluegrassgreenthumb
      @bluegrassgreenthumb 2 роки тому +6

I can explain the science behind any part of KNF if you have specific questions. It’s generally taught with more basic analogies because the science is deep and is more to grasp than the average person can keep up with on top of everything else at first. The system works when it’s done correctly, regardless if you know the exact science of what’s going on. I have spent the last 5 years unpacking it all though and more than happy to talk about it!

Pretty much - very little actual chemistry knowledge involved. When people say things like "nobody fertilizes the forest and look how lush they are" it's a good sign their understanding is very surface-level. Why? Because Nobody is harvesting the forests, so of course nobody needs to fertilize them. When you harvest a field of crops you're removing biomass and all the atomic elements they have accumulated and will have to replenish the system somehow.

Love the show and hope to see many more but so many episodes just focus on "recreating nature" and organic nonsense.
What makes you think nature is the optimal setting for growing plants? Plants grow with what they are given... poor compacted soil, too dry, too wet, too little sun, too cold at night, too hot in the day... Thats natural, it's not ideal, but that nature... Not ideal.
People put a plant under artificial light, stunt their root spread, unnaturally provide nutrient sources/waterings/co2... But still trying to recreate natural, what if you tried to create OPTIMAL growing conditions not just natural.
You aren't trying to make a plant that can survive nature's harsh conditions, you're trying to make a plant fat and happy during it's short lifespan. You can go be happy outside, play in the dirt, be one with all the bugs, but just because that's where plants were born doesn't mean that's where they need or want to be 🤷

@@GardenTalkwithMrGrowIt Great I'll definitely check it out. And not trying to be too harsh on the organic stuff, I've done my fair share, but it's often pushed too hard like it's the "right way to grow" when it's just ANOTHER way to grow.
Seems like so many people have misconceptions about "hydro" or "synthetic nutrients" because back in the day they got some mass produced mildew smelling garbage Beasters. It really but a bad taste in people's mouth both figuratively and literally.
Now the very best stuff is grown with care, indoors, under strict environmental conditions while constantly being fed nutrients. It's not the only way, but in no way should be frowned on or ever thought to be inferior either.

Sustainability and and overall genuine care and appreciation for all life on our planet. These methods described also aim to make the Earth a healthier place for all of us and those after us. 💚
