After Tesla, Elon Musk's Starlink could be all set to expand into India. Reports say, Starlink has received in-principle approval from India's Telecom Ministry for satellite communication services. This approval, pending final checks by the Home Ministry, marks a significant step forward after years of deliberation. Starlink could soon be issued a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license, essential for launching its services in India. The timing coincides with Musk's anticipated visit on April 21 and 22, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announce major investments, potentially up to $3 billion. Actually starlink is amazing, specially their mobile connectivity solution. The only problem is that it's still not affordable to avarage people. From a very highlevel, I believe it should be easy for ISRO to create a similar service.
It is currently completely impossible for ISRO to create anything even remotely close to the scale of Starlink. Even SpaceX is now struggling to put these things in orbit. In the beginning, F9 rocket could carry up to 60 sats in orbit. Now they can carry only 23. The reason for that is that Starlink V2 sats aare significantly bigger, heavier and obviously more capable with more functionality. Yet, this came at a cost. That's why Starship is so important. One of the first missions would be to carry these satellites in orbit. The paayload capacity woule be absolutely insane. Over 2x the Falcon Heavy, maybe even over 3x.
ISRO on the other hand launches only a handful of rockets per year. And it is not like ISRO has anything even remotely close to F9 in terms of payload capacity. F9 can launch nearly 23 tons in space. In reusable config, which are most launches, about 19 tons. In terms of price, a single F9 rocket costs upwards of 60 million USD which is not that far from more common mid-lift ISRO rockets. GSLV costs nearly 50 million USD, it is non-reusable and can carry only 6 tons to LEO which is 3x less than the reusable F9. Price-to-payload, SpaceX very far ahead of the game. This means that ISRO can't even hope to create something at scale of Starlink. If we take the GSLV rocket, you would need 3 of these and 150 million USD to match what a reusable F9 can do. So India would need to spend billions upon billions of dollars every years and hundreds of launches only to match what SpaceX is doing today. last year, SpaceX laucnhed 100 missions so we are talking about at least 300 launches just to match
@@napobg6842well, point taken about the launch capabilities at the moment. However, he's talking about the satellites. Launches can still be done by spacex. Like the upcoming GSAT20 launch. And it doesn't have to match the scale of starlink. Just covering India (likev what Navic does) or even part of the difficult terrain areas, like North East, Himalaya, Andaman, is good enough for starters. Point is to benefit the people of India, especially those living in remote parts where it's difficult to get internet. and we are getting there. Like Navic, we'll soon have broadband satellites network covering India. Could take some time, but not a lot.

India policy doesn't give full hands to any foreign companies (like 60:40) for which Tesla delayed in coming to India. Waiting for details of the deal with Elon Musk vs Govt.of India.

@@Reddylion We were paying about US $100/month for 5 mbps DSL (on a good day). Starlink was $500 for hardware (for a phased array dish and router, easiest installation ever). Monthly cost initially $100/month, went immediaately to 65 mbps, now averaging 160 mbps. Monthly cost now at $120/month. Dish uses powered ethernet and melts snow and ice in winter, a big deal where we live. Negligible outages. Hope that helps

What Tesla sees is India's discrimination against China so a golden opportunity in India where China cannot compete and its domestic NEV industry just beginning. It will be interesting to see what Modi offers Tesla to set up shop in India. India knows that it needs NEV to meet its Paris Accord obligations.

We are eagerly waiting for starlink satellite internet in India. In our area, neither Jio Fibre, Air fibre, nor airtel xtream fibre is available. So starlink is the only option. Waiting eagerly......

There is a huge non-urban population in India with slow or non-existent access to the internet. Starlink might just be the perfect solution for these people. But, if SpaceX wants to have real access to the Indian market, a $100 a month is not an option in India. They can sell the equipment at a significant loss, that's not a problem. How much they can cut from the monthly subscription is the real question

Starlink entering in India is like, Britishers entering Bharat to trade. In past British India Corp looted, created disbalance and cause havoc in the Bharat which changed social structure of millions of people. Imagine how much power they will have if we let American satellite entering in our region. Yes our people will be connected and everyone will have access to internet in cheaper price but compromising alot of our information. USA's enemy no.1 is China and our India will be sandwiched by the two nations because of their struggle.
