A huge missed opportunity as well was including this iconic, real quote from Patrizia. When they offered her early release through a work program, she turned it down saying, "I've never worked in my life, and I'm certainly not going to start now." What a line.
Wow. Not sure how it works in Italy, but so many people in the US deserve to be in that program, or have committed much lower level crimes, and are never offered it. We're pretty inhumane here to the poor and the incarcerated & I wonder if incarceration in Italy is any better.
@@juancarlosfigueroaramon2015 I know right? People calling this "iconic" makes me cringe. She's a self serving murderer. It's as pathetic as the women falling over Ted Bundy.
House of Gucci should have been a limited series like ACS assassination of Gianni Versace, the aftermath of Maurizio murder was too important to just gloss over quickly at the end
Yes, I loved the ACS version, and you could tell that everyone really cared about Versace and fashion and wanted to tell the story respectfully and take time to tell it. Loved what Luke said about glamorizing Patrizia too, it’s disgusting, we should not be making murderers into martyrs, i appreciated that ACS told Andrew’s story without glamorizing him in the same way.
It just gets me how apparently Lady Gaga spent year living in Italy to prepare for the movie but never read the book or met the Gucci's. Like that's not a preparation for a movie, that's a vacation
To me, that proves that they want to keep the book and movie separate. Maybe legally as well, perhaps they didn’t purchase the rights and they want to avoid that anyone blames them of copyright issues.
I agree, the source material was so vast, and I think they got caught up in it! Gaga is brilliant, and I think she deserves a lot of praise for thrusting herself into the idea of the character, but it felt like she went rogue when it came to interpreting Patrizia as a person to me!
@@hautelemode I think if she portrayed the role the way the real Patrizia was it wouldn’t have came off as believable because that lady have quotes you would think was from a scripted series
@@frankieffbaby The film tries to portray her as a #girlboss which is the illness of the movies and series of these past few years. She was a gold digging, narcisistic monster tho.
Let's talk about how stupid it was to make the cast act in English with an Italian accent. It made the characters look like caricatures. The director decided to hire American actors? Let them act with a standard american accent. It's not like in real life these conversations happened in english with a strong italian (russian in lady gaga's case) accent.
@@janemelikova4318 to me, a native italian speaker, she sounds russian more than italian...but even if she sounded perfectly Italian my point still stands
@@Anna-ig6ql I see what you mean. Though, as a native russian speaker, I’d say that she sounds nothing like russian tbh. But yeah the portrayal of Italians in American film industry seems to be of a mocking nature (same goes for Russian characters). Guess that’s just their trademark or something.
@@janemelikova4318 Yeah, as a mixed American from a pretty diverse area, Brooklyn in NYC whose lived around a lot of immigrants especially slav immigrants (Brighton beach) I can guess that people in their home country act a lot different most likely in comparison to people living in America, but American portrayals of other cultures feel very caricature-esque. I wish we could just use subtitles and have actual actors from the culture speaking in their native language. It’s jarring and a bit offensive to me. The use of British/posh accents to indicate a foreign culture is annoying, I understand when the actors are British but badly done fake accents are a big pet peeve. Then again I’m trying to immerse myself in other cultures and languages, other people might just want a narrative that’s easier to follow in English.
I feel like House of Gucci would’ve been better as a series on HBO or STARZ or Showtime/Encore. I feel it would’ve been cool to follow the house from its inception to the demise of it being a family owned business.
Yes! I found they tried to cover way too much ground in 2 and a half hours. If they did a series like The Crown it would have been much more interesting
As an Italian, I found Jared Leto's accent to be so wrong and out of place, his performance was good but I couldn't get over that feeling that I was looking at a satirical and rather offensive impression of Italians. I preferred the almost nonexistent accent of Adam Driver and even Gaga's one. Also, hated the movie, they could've done a miniserie like that of the Versace murder and it could've been way better.
I agree! I think many went for Gaga's because she talked about her italian heritage and language training - the effort fell flat- but as much as I expected it, it's very annoying to see yet again another depiction of italians as stereotyped italian-americans. Gucci is very trendy rn, I don't think they cared about the story, it's just a money grab
In his review of the film, Mark Kermode describes Leto's performance as "Look at me I'm acting!" , and well he says, "I've never seen an actor take that many acting pills." (I reccomend watching the review if you wanna see Kermode's impression of Leto in the film)
Oh booyyyy just wait until you read the press statement Jared gave about “snorting lives of arrabbiata sauce” and “olive oil for blood”. The man was borderline transitioning to be italian lmao.
Agreed, I'm not italian ,but I thought his impression was a caricature of Italian, I kept waiting for him to say "Dis is a very espicy meata ball"(insert most exaggerated italian accent possible). I felt everyone's accent was terrible.
Ridley Scott was just the wrong director for this material. He seems to have no interest in the fashion or history of Gucci aside from the central conceit of the film and cherry picked moments. You almost with they would’ve embraced the camp of it and went full Scorsese with it. It’s also too damn long for having covered so little.
I totally agree. In the end I was left wondering what I’d just watched and why I felt so little impact. If Scorsese had directed it, it would’ve been much more satisfying and had a core and a theme, not just this series of happenings
@@kaemincha I’m just saying that the director decided to focus the movie on how the family split and not so much in the fashion. I think that people were expecting to see their view on what Gucci is (fashion) , and perhaps because some were so informed on the murder and the story, they expected it to be told differently and have it include more family members. I personally didn’t know in detail the story, so I thought that the movie was directed fabulously and wouldn’t change the way the story was told or the plot.
you are absolut right, @emilypeterson , about his zero interest for fashion! but guess who is his wife. she is the producer of the movie and happens to be italian and she is trying to make this film since the 2000’s. in my humble homosexual opinion he would never do such a film. but he is a great artist. he made the story drama of it all the main piece of the film. and millions i’ll watch it like you did and probably will do it again and again!
@Nstink seem like your friend don't know much about the true History of Gucci then, which is fine, but also, maybe you should just explain to them why you weren't impressed? I personally did and my friends definitely had another eye on the movie. ♥
Honestly the movie completely different vibe from trailer. My friends who didn't watch the trailers and don't have much interest in fashion enjoyed it. I have more of an interest in fashion stuff, watched trailers and thought it would be much more of thriller, and ended up disappointed. I did enjoy the sex scenes with Lady Gaga and Adam Driver respectfully 👀👀
To be fair faithful movie adaptations are extremely predictable and genuinely terrible. The ones that are halfway decent always have significant changes in the story.
That was my main take away. Book readers have high expectations and are regularly disappointed when someone with no real interest decides to make a movie.
I just watched it yesterday and my main issue was the passage of time like if they didn’t have the daughter you could almost think it happened in like a week. So strange in my opinion
i agree. there was no character development to show the passage of time, their daughter just grew 4 years every minute. and they didn't give us a date until maurizio got shot.
Right ?? I watched it with my mom and I was so confused on how quickly he got over Patrizia, and my mom had to explain to me that it had been like. 10 years since they had been separated and I was SO confused
I’m not Italian but I have a lot of Italian friends and I have to say, there is absolutely no way to accurately portray Italian dialogue and culture without actual Italians. They just have such a unique and captivating way of communicating that It really takes away from impact of the story by having Americans do it in English. I totally agree this should have been a longer limited series in Italian with Italian actors - there’s no reason why We should continue to accept American portrayals of other cultures in this day and age
I don't think this is necessarily true. I'm Italian and in my opinion there have been cases of American productions with foreign actors portraying our culture and our way of communicating well. A good example would be "Call me by your name" (although the fact that the director is Italian surely helped). I think the problem arises when the movie and the actors end up portraying a stereotypical version of Italian Americans (whose culture and lifestyle is quite different from Italians'). I haven't watched House of Gucci yet but based on Luke's words this seems to be the problem with this movie.
Girl, it's acting. Their job is to portray other people. They don't have to be straight out of Italy in order to portray Italians. We don't need to gatekeep every little thing.
Adam Driver is incredibly talented from what I have seen of his work. He can do emotional scenes well. This sounds like he either wasn't invested in the role, bad directing or both.
I think that his character was way too simplified. He does an amazing job when the character has credibility, but Maurizio in the film was awfully dumb and flat, looks like a bot with a suit and tie.
The fact that he skipped the after party as he was so ready for the filming to he over, I don't think he was all that invested in the role. He just wanted to work with many cool actors but doesn't have any passion in the role
as someone who knew nothing about the people behind the gucci name, the trailer made me sorta think the movie was largely going to be about the murder but then actually seeing it, it's only a quick 10 minutes at the end of the movie... I would've preferred that to be a much larger part of the movie, as well as the court trial
Yes! All I keep saying is I was so looking forward to the trial and how they caught her/Italy’s perception of her afterwards, etc. it was such a slow born
Why ..do you really enjoy that much seeing someone's demise? Remember he was a real person, and walked away only because his wife became controlling and irrational.
Lady Gaga (love her) strikes me as too much of an artist to be a craftsman (actor). Actors are supposed to be able to 'mute' who they are or even tap into aspects of who they are to execute a role. Her not being able to set her views aside is understandable, but not her job as an actress... She is too fiercely independent as a creative to adapt to other characters that aren't already part of her, in my opinion... idk if this makes sense
this is not true at all. gaga did intense research and talked to many who knew patrizia. the producers have actually said they didn't want gaga to meet patriza as its disrecptful and unfair to the person she had killed. Patrizia is a manipulative liar she would of never been unbaised, she would of only told gaga how she wanted to be portrayed not how she actually was.
@@brooklynsbaby4367 "her not being able to put her views aside" that isn't true at all. how she portrayed patrazia was nothing like gaga so saying "she's to independent to adapt to characters that aren't already a part of her" is also not true at all.
This is a really great review from somebody who has read the books and has knowledge of the brand and its history. Hollywood never gets it right and this film is really flawed not to mention the awful "its me Mario" accents. Poor film and most critics agree too.
Apparently, Gaga was supposed to be narrating to, I guess, move the plot at least consistently and cohesively together but it got chopped cause the film was too long already. There was also supposed to be a like part of the film introducing Gucci, i forgot.
This movie felt like ten years long for me - it just went on and on and then the actual climax of the film felt like two seconds long and it was so anticlimactic. Also can we talk about how Patritzia didn’t age in like twenty years?
Lady Gaga said in an interview that the reason Mauritzio left her was because Patrizia lost her looks, but this was never alluded to in the film. She looks the same and this shows Gaga's lack of understanding of the character motivations in the situation. Didn't do a lot of homework for someone who spent 9 months in character.
@@girlsofeastblock2545 im failing to understand how the movie's lack of proper story telling was gagas fault? There was definitely a scene that suggested what she said but again, it's not up to her to decide what's gonna be shown in the movie. Seems like you have a personal problem with her and try to find anything to criticize her for.
@@sina3602 Luke said it best. Gaga thought she could better capture Patrizia without meeting her. That’s says it all. I have no problem with her at all. She’s a fabulous musician. But like many have commented, I feel she has too much character IRL to disappear into roles and leans too much on her own understanding.
@@girlsofeastblock2545 I mean yeah? She also explained why so maybe actually listen to her?? How does that "say it all" Lmfao If yall genuinely think patrizia was gonna be honest without trying to paint a different and better narrative of herself, yall have lost yalls minds. That woman still believes whole heartedly that she's a gucci and you think she's just gonna let gaga portray her as anyone other than what she wants to be portrayed as? Please. Critical thinking. Do it. And what does her not meeting with patrizia have to do with the main point of OP thinking gaga didn't seem to age throughout the movie? You're just proving my point with more cherry picking.
OK so what you're saying is I should read the book lol. I totally agree with your thoughts on the movie, re: feeling rushed, shallow, weird Italian American caricatures (I am also Italian American!), etc. I was already intrigued by the source material, but you've bumped it up to a "must-read" for me!
@@anneneville6255 In all fairness, most renowned/groundbreaking films are adapted from written works. Even films that aren't explicitly adapted from written source material often borrow popular concepts or plots from them. Modern books do the same thing. There's really no such thing as an original concept at this point, but whether or not concepts can be adapted into a movie effectively is an entirely different matter. It sounds like this movie fell short, but the LOTR series, Jaws, Forrest Gump, The Godfather, and many others are considered some of the best films of all time, even with the creative liberties. Ridley Scott sounds like the biggest problem here. 🤔
@@DeMomentoEve It's a facet of our immigrant culture--a way that many communities kept a sense of roots and connection to their home countries after moving across an ocean in a time before phones and the Internet. Yes I agree!!! The movie was so long but everything went by so quick. For example when patrizia and maurizio had a child it happened so fast. One scene was patrizia telling him she’s pregnant and the very next scene they are holding a baby. Their child also had no screen time whatsoever which I’m not necessarily mad about because their child didn’t have that much importance but they never acknowledged her 😭😭
A simple and yet obvious change that is symbolic of the problems with the film is the color grading. For a film about fashion and greed instead of being bright and exciting, it looks so dull with a blue and gloomy color palette. And thats how I feel about the whole film, it teases an exciting story but presents something dull and washed out.
I am a 74 year old woman who enjoys your critiques and your vocabulary. Your talent restores my hope in our youth! I agree with you on Gaga needing to read the books and meet with Patrizia. Method actors and others do research and even live with types of people they portray in films. Such a missed opportunity!
Am I the only one that thought Adam Driver’s performance was extremely underwhelming and underperforming? He is capable of insane emotional scenes, but he really seemed like he didn’t want to do it or didn’t want to be in the movie. I felt like he can’t stand Gaga on screen at all. Awkward vibe
Whoever made the trailer did too good of a job of making the movie not look boring. Jared Leto and Lady Gaga were the only ones I felt like were at least having fun on set.
Can we talk about how the film also made it seem like Patrizia and Maurizio only had Alessandra as their daughter?! Like I didn’t know about the other daughter until this video lol
@@mrierie25 no no! Those two daughters allessandra and allegra were both patrizia's and maurizio's. Just stating that maurizio actually cheated on patrizia for years with Mclaughley before meeting Frankie

Just cause a brand is famous it doesn't mean you have to like it. I personally like Gucci (even if the only thing I own is a belt, and that was a gift people gave me) but I think you should at least don't like one famous brand or product. There are so many, it's impossible to like them all. People who like them all are probably just attracted by the price tag and have no personal taste of their own.
COMMENT CORRECTION: as i found out some of the things I previously wrote were not completely correct, i'm editing my comment to no longer be misleading. I apologize :) To me, as a native italian speaker, Lady Gaga accent doesn't seem really italian, it's more russian/eastern europe. This was also pointed out during a Daily Beast' interview by an italian dialogue coach, Francesca De Martini, who was helping Salma Hayek and was briefly asked about Gaga's accent.
She doesnt look Italian anymore because of multiple plastic surgeries. And before anyone attacks me: I am a big supporter of plastic surgeries and yes, she had many. Facts are facts.
Why does this make it sound like Lady Gaga in American horror story was more accurate to the real Patrizia than the Patrizia she portrayed in the actual movie lol
Meeting with the real patrizza would not have been glorifying her at all. I didn’t get that as her reasoning, but ig she found it necessary for her mental health. But then not reading the source material…she lost me there lol.
She did start reading the book but found it to be filled with opinionated narratives so instead researched every objective information that was available, including her interviews and real events.
@@heirloom906 Still feels a tad bit strange. The movie is still based on the book more so then the real life. While it might be more biased not reading the source material feels like missing a step. I mean imagine combining the book and objective accounts for research for the role. Why not do both
@@jamarsh09 It was what she chose as a professional and working with her acting teacher and she did a pretty good job so I don’t know why this discussion is even relevant. She is being nominated at almost every critics circle awards for god’s sake!
This would have made for an excellent series for Netflix or FX. You could have still retained the star power but with better writing and rich character backstories. Patrizia came across as camp. In real life I imagine her as old world tough with a dash of socipathy thrown in for good measure.
This is my second time watching this because I subjected myself to HOG (heh) last week and I’m still annoyed at how bad it was. Your review not only validated me, but educated me. Bravo! Totally agree about Lady Gaga. I think it’s bizarre that she threw away/avoided all books with FACTS, and instead ran around Italy asking people, “What do you know about Patrizia Gucci?” She literally said that this was her process. So she ignored the truth to ask people who weren’t even there to base the starring role on? I can’t.
Totally agree with you. Also, as an Italian, I've never heard about Patrizia before this movie. Maybe older people know who she is, but she's definitely not famous or well-known, so asking random people what do they think about her is pointless.
Even if she didn't trust Patrizia's version of events at least she would know how to portray her properly, if she glorifies herself then that's how her character needs to be acted.
It's kind of odd how they needed to create so many fake scenarios and moments considering there is a lifetime's worth of content on the house of gucci book lol
Just finished watching the movie and as a film student it was a tedious bore that somehow made an interesting story laughably bad. Also how did every outfit look boring to me? Like it looked washed out most of the time, only gaga looked good. Edit: also also, the whole idea that this family had to "die" so that Gucci could live again was such a missed opportunity to capitalize as a theme but nooo we had to listen to Jared Leto's best Super Mario attempt
The movie isn't out in Italy so I haven't watched it yet, but if Patrizia's most iconic line ("I have one flaw: I can't shoot straight") isn't in it, I will personally complain to Ridley Scott.
I 100% agree with everything you said and would add I thought their version of Italy in the 70's and 80's was completely unrealistic and filled with americanised clichés (for example when they go to see the leather factory and end up in a dusty bar with no lighting... seriously this was taking the piss).
Honestly, what baffles me the most is how can anyone, in 2021, a year that has seen unprecedented focus on cultural appropriation, make a movie about one of the topical Italian houses like, ever, and for god's sake not casting one single Italian actor to play a prominent role. And before anyone says anything: no, Gaga doesn't count.
i feel like they went the lazy route- people are getting upset about the casting which have been avoided easily. but it seems they wanted big name actors and didn’t expect people to get upset ( which people did)
@@marya5925 People of color are raked over the coals constantly for wanting fair and accurate representation. Don't put this on them. You have capitalism and studios run by older white men to blame for this.

This film was just hyped for its academy award list of actors, and I love their other work, but this was definitely left wanting and confusing in the plot part, it’s nice to know some of the background now
The sucky thing is too I did think the cast fit their parts pretty well, but like you said, the cast felt like they weren’t pushed in any direction and I just think that’s pretty much where Ridley is at in his career now
Tbh I think Gaga's reason is bullshit. I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason is because Gaga is scared of Patrizia. I mean if the person I was portraying was not only a cold blooded killer and still alive, I'd be intimidated. I also read somewhere that Patrizia was pissed when she found out that Gaga was playing her. Gaga easily could've just read the source material and looked at tapes of Patrizia over the years and at least do a decent job. Ultimately I think Gaga liked the idea of playing a glamorous yet cold blooded killer but didn't want to do the dirty work.
I side with Gaga she's playing a wanna be killer who is clearly a horrible person and doesn't feel remotely guilty. She owns her nothing and I like Gagas portrayal.
Why would u be scared of Patrizia? Yea she had her husband killed but she is no jason or Michael Myers. I understand why gaga didn't want to meet her. Her explanation made sense
Gaga actually does state that she went and watched all the available interviews of Patrizia. Patrizia was happy about Gaga playing her until Gaga came out and said she wouldn't meet with her. And while I agree that it would've helped to read the book it is based on, I think she held her own on screen without it or studying Patrizia irl.
i left the theatre feeling so blah about it i was excited to see the growth of the fashion line, make it more about how they got their aesthetic and how they made it big, instead it was about two people who i didn't know or care about, who then weren't explained well in a way to make me care about either. I watched a two hour movie about gucci and still know next to nothing about gucci
one of my problems with the film is like.. it feels like there’s no definitive timeline, i never knew the time period or how far apart it was between events
I could care less about this movie. That being said ... WOW, this review of the film captivated me from beginning to end. Boy you are good!!! I can listen you tell a story for hours. Anna Wintour needs to hire you, PRONTO!
When I left the cinema I felt tired and disappointed but couldn't put it into words - but you have explained it perfectly. It's so sad to see all that potential wasted.
Probably much better review than any other film critic has/will put together, have had the book on my ‘to read list’ but haven’t gotten around to reading it, but now will start and likely not spend time with the movie, thank you:)
Genuinely grateful for your videos and breakdowns of fashion. You were my introduction to it and I can't imagine how much work goes into this channel especially during awards/fashion week season.
Great review! As an Italian, i had heard that the accents were terrible, so i was considering watching it doubled in Italian, but after this video i think that i’ll just skip it altogether. I agree with your comments on Gaga, it seems hypocritical on her part (not meeting Patrizia, not reading the book-wtf). You should do more movie reviews! 😄
@@frankieffbaby but wasnt Gaga’s whole thing that she was trying to live as a Gucci and she was doing like method acting for preparation? But idk I don’t know either women and never will so it ultimately doesn’t matter. But yeah, it just seems sloppy
It’s interesting you touched on many of the same things I had issues with while watching the movie. The most frustrating thing is the lack of direction, like what kind of story are you trying to tell? I wanted to see more of the history, more of the rise and fall of the HoG, more of the behind the scenes creative aspects, more of the business. We’d get a scene of someone getting screwed over in a deal with no idea how we got there. They really thought their equation of Gucci + Gaga was a slam dunk and instead we got a dumb, watered down fiction. AND let me just say as a Gaga stan, I’m very disappointed in the lack of research and preparation she did for this role. It’s almost as if being an Italian American woman obsessed with fashion was her only prerequisite for this film.
I totally agree with your review, the film doesn´t even shows the reason with Patricia decides to kill his husband, just portays her as a sad and angry ex wife, but thats not enough drama in the writting to comit crime.
This movie isn't about Gucci. The brand gucci is a stand-in, it's not relevant to the story, and it doesn't have to be. It could have been any mega-corporation. It's a story about oligarchy. How wealth corrupts, and fosters egotism and cruelty in others. I really enjoyed it.
I didn't feel like Patrizia was shown as only money-hungry social climber; what I saw was a progressive corruption of ambition and strength into paranoia and obsession.
the distinction between Italian and Italian-American portrayals with Al Pacino is *spot 👏 on 👏* 😩. I think you're being kind, Al Pacino (while yes, a film legend, a short king) was straight up *goofy* in this portrayal at times.
I have not watched the movie but I was interested to hear your thoughts because I’ve been inundated with the trailer and was wondering if the wardrobe was accurate. After hearing your opinion it seems like this should have been a mini series because of the vast source material.
No, Americans always find more intelligent giving an awkward and stereotypical accent to the characters. Gucci is actually from Tuscany but these people sound and act like a mix of sicilians, Neapolitans and russians
Exactly. Here in France, several Yves Saint Laurent movies were made and I could never imagine watching his story made by American studios, making his character speak English in a forced french accent
I agree a 100% with your review! And also, the locations?!! Bitch, I lived in Rome, and the apartment where Maurizio lives and where he is shot in the film, is a famous roman quartiere, but in real life he was murdered in Milan. How do you have such a big budget and mess it up with location acurracy?
@@gabriellin6039 those are just crappy excuses. The reason is that the direction didn't care, just as they didn't care about giving the cast a cohesive accent, or an accurate accent. As an Italian, the movies felt like a poorly-done, or even offensive, cosplay.
My main issue with the film was that the actual story is so intriguing and the characters could be explored in way deeper and more interesting ways. I feel like Scott went for a lighter feel and missed out on the opportunity of giving us a compelling family and personal drama.
I hated Jared Leto's acting and everyone talked as if they were Italian and spoke broken English. Also, THE SCRIPT! WTF! Can these people form sentences? There was no rhythm in their speech, and in fact no good dialogues. It's as if Ridley Scott phoned it in.
My fiancée and I were looking for a movie to watch one weekend, and that one seemed the most interesting. So we watched the trailer. Everything you said was obvious in the trailer. Too many star actors doing their own thing, I was already lost in the video, and Lady Gaga looked like she almost didn’t want to be there or something. I don’t know, it felt off. We stayed home and watched tv instead. No regerts.
As an Italian myself, born and raised in Italy, the real, huge problem of this movie is the offensive and stereotypical portrayal of Italians and Italian culture. Hollywood always depicts Italians as uncultured mafia gangsters. Also, Italians are very different from Italian-americans, I would say the two groups have totally different cultures today. Yet, House of Gucci cast looks and act like a bunch of Guidos. All of this adds to the non-credibility of the movie to an Italian audience. I find it strange that Americans keep enjoying such stereotypical representation in 2021!
lol yeah the part about Gaga not wanting to "collude" with her but still glorifying her in her portrayal, and not wanting to read an "opinionated" narrative yet creating a character that is largely different from the woman irl is just so hypocritical (i also don't blame her entirely like Luke said, she should have been directed to follow the source more)
This is right up there with Tom Ford's review of the film. A lot of what he said syncs up with a lot of your points... the caricatures and phony-ness, as well as the sheer inaccuracy to key elements of how it all went down.
I liked it. I think they were going for a soap opera over the top dramatization because of how large the personalities involved were, and viewers went in taking it too seriously.I think people expected Foxcatcher and got Dynasty. I honestly thought it would be more camp and I was a little disappointed with that. I thought it would be super over the top. That would hav been so much better but I would watch it again, on stream. The Just the Gist podcast covered a large portion of the story and helped me fill in the gaps. I listened before I saw the movie so I think my mind filled in the missing chunks of the plot and that’s probably why I like it.
You made a good point in saying that not many people know the lore behind most of Gucci’s products. But that also applies to everything about Gucci. I feel like most people only know about Gucci as a luxury brand, one that may or may not make clothes. And I actually enjoyed this film as an entry into learning more about the Gucci family. I get that someone like you who probably knows a lot more about the source material-you said and shown plenty of times throughout the video you’ve read the books- so I can see where you’re coming from. Just wanted to share my opinion as I seem to be one of the very few who enjoyed the film in this chat lol. loved the video!
I watched this movie recently and when I left the theatre I was still wondering if she ever actually loved mauritzio (idk how to spell I’m sorry) in the first place or if she was just in it for the money the whole time, I think being confused about the main plot line isn’t the best way to leave a movie
Also, I like moral ambiguity in movies, but when you can't root for anyone at all, at any point, the movie becomes so arduous to watch that you get excited to just go to the lobby to get a 10 dollar pop refill. I gave it a fair chance though...
Thank you for your honesty! I was mortified by the clip played on Fallon that put Jared Leto's bizarre accent on blast. Glad I'm not missing anything. I don't have time to pay to be tortured further by his performance.
Wonderful in depth review. Appreciate you expecting some actual quality and research from these famous actors and movie professionals. We want more passion projects and less cash grabs! I never understand bad fictionalised stories that leave out most of the fascinating lives of their real life counter parts - similar issues with Bohemian Rhapsody and the Turing biopic.
I don't think Gaga was trying to glorified Patrizia, she was portraying her as an evil but realistic woman hunger of power. Also the main problem of the film was the high expectation as if it was the new Godfather movie and we get a camp version.
Personally I didnt mind the film. I watched it in cinema opening weekend and i found it rather enjoyable- perhaps because I'm not to critical of films generally. Saying that i still completely agree the pacing and storyline was very strange... my mum who didnt know much about the HoG legacy or brand previously was constantly confused about the constant jumping of story to story. Also as a fashion buff, the clothes were SO underwhelming lol. Also I hated the fact that the trial was completely skipped over. Maybe I retract my initial statement but i didnt mind it, defo could've been better and could've been worse.
Everyone hyping up the movie without actually knowing anything about the characters, family history or Gucci as a brand and its history, needs to watch this video.... And also just read the book, as will I!
Tom Ford is so talented it’s insane. For his debut film to be A Single Man and his follow up to be Nocturnal Animals… What I wouldn’t give for an ounce of his talent. I’m sure he would have made a great film but I’m guessing he wouldn’t want to do it.
@@meggy0 agreed, would probably hit too close to home for him. But he would definitely be a better choice than Ridley Scott, who truly shines when he directs scifi movies.
[SPOILER ALERT] I loved the movie, and I didn’t know anything about Gucci other than it was renowned worldwide. I was able to understand perfectly, for example, that cheating on your taxes was a very different matter culturally for Italians than for Americans. It was also made clear that the Gucci family had always been veeeeery complicated. Lady Gaga not reading the book has an interesting parallel with Ridley: he didn’t finish reading “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” when he did “Blade Runner,” either, even though the latter was based on the former. Here’s also something else to keep in mind: there’s a dramatic thrust and plot twist around which all of Ridley Scott’s changes revolve. Patrizia looks to be conniving and out of control, but at the very end it turns out she was right all along! And thus justified in her actions. And then there is the irony: by the time Mauricio realized it, Patrizia had already put a hit on him. And it was too late for him to reconcile with her. As for Lady Gaga’s clothes: I was too caught up in her eyes to notice. Other than she loved to make the most of her booming bod. Weaponized sex? Yes, please! (And I say this as a gay man. I knows it when ya gots it.) I’m watching this movie again. And then I’m buying it. Looooved it. And this makes two movies in a row I’ve seen made for grown ups! The other was “Dune.” Truly an embarrassment of riches.
As an Italian, the movie felt like a poorly done cosplay. The accents were all over the place, like having a native American character speaking in a Scottish accent. The fashion wasn't highlighted as it should have been, like in devil wears prada. The timeline was poorly done. Jared leto is probably the worst, felt like Super Mario. The movie is horrendous. But to each their own.
Adam can say so much without barely moving his face, that's his acting and why he's so good. Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea but I think he was the best thing about the movie
Fabulous review. I suspect in some way that LGG had fear of Patrizia. She preformed her idea, clung to her idea, and meeting her in person might have upset those notions. Not even reading source material, again, she was already fixed on her own opinion of P. Lots of raving about her accent, a person who is Italian American? LGGs reasoning was off in many ways, if you don’t want to glorify a murderess, don’t play her in a movie. So much to work with, not used.
A huge missed opportunity as well was including this iconic, real quote from Patrizia. When they offered her early release through a work program, she turned it down saying, "I've never worked in my life, and I'm certainly not going to start now." What a line.
Honestly that line is so damn iconic !
Yes!!!
Wow. Not sure how it works in Italy, but so many people in the US deserve to be in that program, or have committed much lower level crimes, and are never offered it. We're pretty inhumane here to the poor and the incarcerated & I wonder if incarceration in Italy is any better.
Are we sort of celebrating this?
@@juancarlosfigueroaramon2015 I know right? People calling this "iconic" makes me cringe. She's a self serving murderer. It's as pathetic as the women falling over Ted Bundy.
House of Gucci should have been a limited series like ACS assassination of Gianni Versace, the aftermath of Maurizio murder was too important to just gloss over quickly at the end
This is a great idea! I’m sad this wasn’t what happened
I thoroughly enjoyed the ACS Gianni Versace series. What a shame this film fell so short when it could've been done so well.

It just gets me how apparently Lady Gaga spent year living in Italy to prepare for the movie but never read the book or met the Gucci's. Like that's not a preparation for a movie, that's a vacation
it's even funnier when you remember that she's Italo-american herself
To me, that proves that they want to keep the book and movie separate. Maybe legally as well, perhaps they didn’t purchase the rights and they want to avoid that anyone blames them of copyright issues.

I agree, the source material was so vast, and I think they got caught up in it! Gaga is brilliant, and I think she deserves a lot of praise for thrusting herself into the idea of the character, but it felt like she went rogue when it came to interpreting Patrizia as a person to me!

Let's talk about how stupid it was to make the cast act in English with an Italian accent. It made the characters look like caricatures. The director decided to hire American actors? Let them act with a standard american accent. It's not like in real life these conversations happened in english with a strong italian (russian in lady gaga's case) accent.
wdym russian?
ESATTO! BRAVA! Pieno di stereotipi. 😥😪🤢
I feel like House of Gucci would’ve been better as a series on HBO or STARZ or Showtime/Encore. I feel it would’ve been cool to follow the house from its inception to the demise of it being a family owned business.
Yes totally😍it’s a story that has a lot of build-up before things go the way they do
Yes! I found they tried to cover way too much ground in 2 and a half hours. If they did a series like The Crown it would have been much more interesting
Yep I agree ! Better off as a series not a movie
it could work like a american crime story season of ryan murphy. This looks a type of movie Ryan Murphy would do
Would have been an interesting 2-3 season show
As an Italian, I found Jared Leto's accent to be so wrong and out of place, his performance was good but I couldn't get over that feeling that I was looking at a satirical and rather offensive impression of Italians.
Jared Leto such an overated actor.
Ye ok but the movie is not focused on fashion, it’s focused on the story and the family.
@@Sol-vj4bg yes, the family of an extremely famous fashion brand??

Now you understand how us book worms feel about movie adaptions!! “Oh we decided to skip a plot changing point and important points? Okay”

To be fair faithful movie adaptations are extremely predictable and genuinely terrible. The ones that are halfway decent always have significant changes in the story.
That was my main take away. Book readers have high expectations and are regularly disappointed when someone with no real interest decides to make a movie.
@@carlosandleon and MANY who change the original books storyline are absolutely horrendous.

That's very true, the way Italians talk is so particular! Even in other languages they carry that cadence and that energy, it's very cool
Lol whut
Girl, it's acting. Their job is to portray other people. They don't have to be straight out of Italy in order to portray Italians. We don't need to gatekeep every little thing.
YES!!! THIS THIS THIS!! A MILLION TIMES THIS!!
This just proofs that Riddley Scott is an awful director.
Same goes with Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino, they're amazing actors but I feel like no one had the chance to really to they job right besides Gaga.
Yes! All I keep saying is I was so looking forward to the trial and how they caught her/Italy’s perception of her afterwards, etc. it was such a slow born
yeah I thought it was actually gonna be a big part of the movie then it just ended lol
hell no. I want to see a movie about a fashion empire and a family behind it. If you want a murder movie with a trial, there are plenty.
Apparently, Gaga was supposed to be narrating to, I guess, move the plot at least consistently and cohesively together but it got chopped cause the film was too long already. There was also supposed to be a like part of the film introducing Gucci, i forgot.
That explains why the narration didn’t continue through the end
@@frankieffbaby Right? How are you going to start the movie with provocative narration, then end with a summary on the screen?
This movie felt like ten years long for me - it just went on and on and then the actual climax of the film felt like two seconds long and it was so anticlimactic. Also can we talk about how Patritzia didn’t age in like twenty years?
Lady Gaga said in an interview that the reason Mauritzio left her was because Patrizia lost her looks, but this was never alluded to in the film. She looks the same and this shows Gaga's lack of understanding of the character motivations in the situation.

My biggest issue with the movie was the timeline. It felt like everything happened in a month.

I bet the answer to that is that Gaga isn't the only one that didn't bother to read the whole book.
She didn't create fake scenarios and the book isn't completely real.

It is in it! I remember it and I just watched the movie last night
I 100% agree with everything you said and would add I thought their version of Italy in the 70's and 80's was completely unrealistic and filled with americanised clichés (for example when they go to see the leather factory and end up in a dusty bar with no lighting... seriously this was taking the piss).
The fact that Patrizia new lease on life just gave her more motivation to take revenge. Damn, that says something.
Becouse people care about accurate representation only with people of colour, it seams.

I support this statement.
You think lady gaga didn’t do her research? Watch at least one of her promo interviews
They lost me at "Bawnjournow"
I could care less about this movie. That being said ... WOW, this review of the film captivated me from beginning to end. Boy you are good!!! I can listen you tell a story for hours. Anna Wintour needs to hire you, PRONTO!
When I left the cinema I felt tired and disappointed but couldn't put it into words - but you have explained it perfectly. It's so sad to see all that potential wasted.
Probably much better review than any other film critic has/will put together, have had the book on my ‘to read list’ but haven’t gotten around to reading it, but now will start and likely not spend time with the movie, thank you:)
I know right! I'm going to crawl into a dark cave now. 😆
Gaga said she didn’t want to meet someone who wasn’t remorseful for murdering someone. I can’t be mad at her for that but she could have read the book
@@frankieffbaby but wasnt Gaga’s whole thing that she was trying to live as a Gucci and she was doing like method acting for preparation? I feel like if you’re making the effort to live in someone’s life for a role you should at least meet the person. Especially if she wanted to understand the woman’s perspective. But idk I don’t know either women and never will so it ultimately doesn’t matter. But yeah, it just seems sloppy
@@oliviadinesen9677 Maybe she just wanted a payed stay in Italy lol
@@skepsisnowhere lmao 100% and I would probably do the same if given the opportunity tbh
To be fair her accent wasn't just supposed to be Italian, it was supposed to be specifically like Patrizia's, and so for that it was quite good
It’s interesting you touched on many of the same things I had issues with while watching the movie.
They should’ve invited you to the NYC premiere
Keeping everything aside why was it made in English? It's a film based on family from Italy, make it in Italian as well.
No, Americans always find more intelligent giving an awkward and stereotypical accent to the characters. Gucci is actually from Tuscany but these people sound and act like a mix of sicilians, Neapolitans and russians
The only way would have been to hire Italian actors.
The movie is made wherever they are willing to pay for it...if the film is paid for by USA why should they speak italian
@@crookedbby would have been better if the spoke normal English - the accents are just ridiculous and embarrassing
Exactly. Here in France, several Yves Saint Laurent movies were made and I could never imagine watching his story made by American studios, making his character speak English in a forced french accent
I'm really glad I'm not the only one who thought this was botched. My friends are too committed to Gaga to have a civil conversation.
Probably due to pandemic restrictions?
It seems like they didn’t have much time shooting the film
@@gabriellin6039 those are just crappy excuses. The reason is that the direction didn't care, just as they didn't care about giving the cast a cohesive accent, or an accurate accent. As an Italian, the movies felt like a poorly-done, or even offensive, cosplay.
My main issue with the film was that the actual story is so intriguing and the characters could be explored in way deeper and more interesting ways. I feel like Scott went for a lighter feel and missed out on the opportunity of giving us a compelling family and personal drama.
I really need a list of must read books about fashion and history!!!!!! Plsssss
I just didn’t take it seriously. Due to the fact that the people who made House of Gucci didn’t either. Like an overcooked ham.
I can't believe no one is mentioning the fact Salma Hayek is in this film...whose husband owns Gucci
The real Gucci family didn't like how it was from Patrizia's perspective and that says enough.
No regerts.
No regratsss
No rugrats
As an Italian myself, born and raised in Italy, the real, huge problem of this movie is the offensive and stereotypical portrayal of Italians and Italian culture. Hollywood always depicts Italians as uncultured mafia gangsters. Also, Italians are very different from Italian-americans, I would say the two groups have totally different cultures today. Yet, House of Gucci cast looks and act like a bunch of Guidos. All of this adds to the non-credibility of the movie to an Italian audience. I find it strange that Americans keep enjoying such stereotypical representation in 2021!
bravo 👏👏👏
Bravo 👏👏👏👏
Finally, a review that focuses on the storyline and not just the accents - thank you!
lol yeah the part about Gaga not wanting to "collude" with her but still glorifying her in her portrayal, and not wanting to read an "opinionated" narrative yet creating a character that is largely different from the woman irl is just so hypocritical (i also don't blame her entirely like Luke said, she should have been directed to follow the source more)
Lady gaga: *I dont want to glorify patrizia*
Also Lady Gaga: *Father Son and the House of gucci*
You know whats hilarious? Tom Ford is actually an amazing director. He directed Nocturnal Animals, an amazing movie. He should have directed this🤣
Only a real Staten Islander would say “I grew up ON Staten Island” and not “IN Staten Island” 😂😂
The “Judas” clip actually left me clinging for life 💀
I want you to interpret every movie about fashion, ever. Love this channel!
So happy I watched your review before the movie. It is obvious you know much more about Gucci than anyone involved in the movie!
"I grew up on Staten Island" I KNEW there was a reason I loved you so much that went beyond the commentary!!! We are both SI escapees!!!!
This literaly just droped.. BTW can you do a video on virgil abloh?
working on something as we speak!!
Whoever edited this is hilarious. Thank you.
Everyone hyping up the movie without actually knowing anything about the characters, family history or Gucci as a brand and its history, needs to watch this video.... And also just read the book, as will I!
House of Gucci would've worked better as a mini series to allow the complex web of storylines to breathe and be fleshed out.
Hollywood is so out of touch, particularly Ridley Scott, present drivel and expect the public to be grateful and impressed.
This was masterful, the audience demands more fashion movie reviews!
Thank you for your sacrifice. Now, it’d be interesting to see what you think about “ The Gret “ costumes
That show is great 👍🏽!!
@@msandoval8027 ikr, elle fanning is fantastic in her role
Luke I think you've sufficiently convinced me to read the book!
Tom Ford is a movie director too. Loved Nocturnal Animals. I think he would have done the story more justice.
[SPOILER ALERT]
I loved the movie, and I didn’t know anything about Gucci other than it was renowned worldwide. I knows it when ya gots it.)
I’m watching this movie again.
I can't believe Patritcia was the one who started that iconic crying saying
We need an org chart with all these characters!! Great video!
Adam can say so much without barely moving his face, that's his acting and why he's so good. Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea but I think he was the best thing about the movie
Yeah, he was good, but the movie still sucked. Kinda sad about it, I really wanted to like it.
