Cruella (2021) Fashion Explained
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2021
- Cruella is a 2021 Disney movie that reimagines the history of 101 Dalmatians main villain Cruella De Vil, turning her into a budding fashion designer growing up during the 1970s London fashion scene. The movie tried to tap into traditional cinema tropes about the fashion industry, young ingenue has talent, gains favor with established fashion designer, and then decides to get revenge when wronged. I won't say the movie plot nor costumes were revolutionary, but they were a pretty interesting walk through 20th century British fashion history, which I personally loved. Cruella is meant to represent punk aesthetics, alla Vivienne Westwood, while her nemesis the Baroness Von Hellman represents the fashion establishment, like Christian Dior & Chanel. The movie is full of references to Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Charles James, John Galliano, Thierry Mugler and more but does that make it a good fashion film?

You missed how the "garbage truck dress"'s train was a bunch of the Baroness' dresses sewn together, signifying that the Baroness' dresses are trash
WHAT? Wow, I didn't catch that. To be honest, her designs are kinda basic, but some of it are alright.
But Cruella's outfits... ✨iconic behavior✨
😭 oh my gawd, I had a feeling but wasn't sure
🤯
I didn’t even catch that haha
Somehow, I caught that right away
They used punk fashion without making the character punk, she didn't want to rebel against the old hierarchy, she just wanted to get to the top of it
which considering this is cruella kinda works for me. we know how her future ends, she becomes the biggest designer & loses her mind wanting a dalmation coat. the punk looks and "i am woman hear me roar" set up her delusion. she thinks she's a rebel, but she's not, & she ends up the villain in the end. that's just me though
@@CrankDatJonasBoi that’s exactly it in my mind
@@CrankDatJonasBoi I love this interpretation
yeah, which is perfectly in character. your point?
@2freeIvX No, they're critiquing the appropriation of the punk aesthetic for personal gain.

I understand she's Cruella and Cruella equals fur but I think it made perfect sense there wasn't any. The plot sets up her descent into villainary, to the point where she disregards morals for fashion. This is a gradual process not immediate and we see hints towards this in the film
It better be in the sequel though.
What descent? She adopted the dogs at the end lol there was not a hint of any descend, if anything, she apologized to Gaspard and Horace for her behavior.
@@violettbellerose1173 something traumatic could happen that causes her to spiral. She’s a very manic person. Plus just because she has the dogs doesn’t mean that trauma won’t get to her and cause her to kill them. They left the end on a kind of cliff hanger
@@strifecloud6930 ... What? No they didn't? I mean sure, trauma can happen to anyone, doesn't mean that the story set it up, which was my point from the beginning. You are trying to address both points not realizing that in doing so you are contradicting the other.
You can't say something can change her personality from this movie to the next one (that would make something like skinning puppies realistic to this character), and then say they actually did leave hints or a cliffhanger, because that actually didn't happen.
There's nothing in this movie that suggests she is going to become the Cruella of the previous live actions or even the one from the animated movie, period.
@@violettbellerose1173 she says something along the lines of "I'm not a murderer yet, I'm still young with plenty if time for that" in a tongue and cheek way, that seemed like a major wink to the audience. But it seems like this a full reimagining of a classic character and they're going in a different route to skinning puppies. She even gave the puppies to anita and the lawyer dude whose name I forget
" And to the fashion freaks.....it's a Disney movie, what were you expecting?"
Best line EVER!!
you say this but cinderella 2015 slapped pretty hard. the first maleficent wasn't too bad either
@@alexiane250 You realize I was quoting him right?
I don't normally watch Disney movies personally bc I don't have children but I love Emma Stone.
Even though people got obsessed with the whole fur missing thing, i really enjoyed the movie and i respect Disney for trying something different. Definitely a better live action than those shitty princess ones with a cast that couldnt even act or sing.
Thank You same!
Something different? You mean the same thing they’ve been doing which is remakes 😭
@@beesknees5628 it's not a remake tho
exactly! thank you!
@@beesknees5628 A remake is a retelling of a story that already exists. Cruella’s 1970s fashion designer backstory didn’t exist until this movie so it’s not a remake.

This got flack at first cause ppl are too attached to Glenn Close's Cruella but heck it wasn't as bad as everyone thought it would be. Remember back in the day when Heath Ledger got tons of criticism for being casted as the joker after Jack Nicholson?
i actually enjoyed watching this movie
no
it wasn't bad but was it anything else other than just fine? i don't get the comparison with ledger's joker lol no one is saying emma did a bad job, she did the best with what she could
@@serendipity-6715 1. Yep. I said it wasn't bad.
2. If you'll read my comment again, I never compared their performance. I was comparing the onset criticism of re-casting of an iconic role that was well portrayed by an amazing actor/actress and negative feedback new actor/actresses get just for being hired before the movie is even released.
it wasn’t bad but i just wish disney would stop making remakes. They’re just relying on our nostalgia for money, instead of coming up with original ideas :/
That inside out blazer moment was a direct lift from The Fresh Prince himself when he went to fancy prep school.
Exactly!! What were they thinking?
fresh prince didnt invented that style.... 🤦🏽♀️
literally so many British kids did this awhile ago lmao its not stealing if it were actually a thing in uk schools
@@Awzuki Was this before or after?
This is a common trope about punk fashion in schools with uniforms in both UK and Japan, etc.
I appreciate that pushback on Liberty being "the most fashionable" store in 70's London. My mother always dressed me in Biba, as a little girl. I may well have been the best-dressed kid in the entire 70's, and photographic evidence backs me up. There's no way any Liberty-outfitted child could have competed with Biba-clad me. Thank you so much for all the work you put into your content. You could just dial it in and rely on charming presentation, but you put in the extra effort to be educational, as well. Thank you.
OMG SO HAPPY TO HEAR THIS!!
That’s funny. I am a sew-er and always just thought of Liberty of London as a fabric maker…never knew it was a store!
Learn something new every day!!
@@jenyj89 You've reminded me: my mom had made us a mother-daughter pair of dresses using the same fabric - which, now that I think of it, must have been at least Liberty-inspired, if not Liberty, itself. I wonder whatever happened to those dresses, now. I hope someone's treasuring them, though it saddens me that that someone isn't me. I gave away so many clothes that my mom made for me, because I lacked the skills to alter them, as my body changed with age; I'd give anything to have them back, especially now that I don't have her, any more. She did make a point of leaving me her sewing machine. I need to honour her by learning how to use it.
Wait I thought Biba was an Indian brand lol
You seem like your were an iconic fashionista kid. That's so cool.
The fact that she didn’t wear a fur bothered me. Like that’s what was most impactful about her! I remember watching the original Disney movie cartoon and she had this gigantic coat that almost looked like a mane, it made her look so creepy cause combined with her posture it made her look almost animal like. People being scared of her sending a bad message by wearing fur… she’s literally a villain? Her name is Cruella ffs, why in hell would she be sending a good message? The whole animal rights issue could have been easily solved with synthetic fur. We see guns in movies all the time, I don’t like them I won’t buy one and the ones they use in the movie are fake why can’t the same basic logic be applied with fur as well
i actually think her not wearing fur was a good addition in way? like i think this was cruella's backstory of how she became how she was and in the animated film she tries to take roger and anita's dogs specifically so i think introducing her without it allowed her characterization to be better and maybe in a sequel she could become darker and don it. does that make sense?
Did you actually watch the film?
@@II-bn8gc i'm not sure if you were talking to me or the person above but both of us did for sure haha! it's one of my favorites this year and both myself and the person i responded to are entitled to our opinions :)
or the VAST amount of furs she wore in the first live action movie
Given how expensive furs are, I don't see how she could afford them.
It makes sense that she doesn't have them at that point in her life.
the trash costume was boarderline experimental but in reality, SO ICONic. cruella realy stitched up the baronesses dresses from last season and weaponized them, a cotton, trash, and newspaper blend, damn, so iconic.

If cruella wins oscar for Best costume design, she's gonna do a rant like she did for little women lmao
@@anpatman IF it doesn't, cue her rant video. Which I am excited for.
@@anpatman off topic but is cruella's hair a cause of inbreeding or just her genetics?
She wore a ‘fur’ for those who said she didn’t wear fur. It was when she wore dalmatian spot tops as mockery for the baroness that she killed her dogs (which is a fake fur and just mimics the pattern)
She also wore a fur early in the movie when Estella, Horace and Jasper were conducting heists at a store.
yeah but the fact she wears faux fur goes against her entire character
@@dingobaby9617 true i think this Cruella is not the Cruella in the original. I think this is a version were story misinterpreted to make Cruella look evil but she simply doesn’t care. (Im talking as if the orig book was the slander to Cruella) like the story of malificent were the orig is that shes evil but in the new ver is that she was just bitter from betrayal.
@@J-R-2000 omg that actually makes so much sense
@@dingobaby9617 i just like to think that a “nobody” like cruella who somehow tried to have beef with the baroness.. peoppe will try to slander her especially she was seen wearing baroness’ pet’s “furs” and that she was mad when it comes to fashion.
Honestly loved the looks in this book, Emma Stone did a wonderful job portraying Cruella and Estella. The costumes that Cruella wore were amazing in my opinion
I feel like I’m the only one who noticed the costumes kinda reflect events in her childhood, like the first red dress she wore that was the baroness’ mimics her birth, where the baroness forgot about/got rid her (like how she did the dress) the Garbage dress mimicking the garbage scene and her running away, etc
And that massive red tulle skirt underneath the military jacket references the baroness’s red skirt with the large front opening with the massive front slit leading downwards.
I lovee the fact that you called out the fashion history mistakes, just goes to show that filming studios now just ride on the name of the cast and ignore a lot of important details like the LV bag timeline, the Chanel haute couture mistake, etc
or it's a conscious decision? creative liberties can and should be taken in movies, this is fiction after all.
@@poonywooon %100, fashion is a very subjective and creative universe! I just thought seeing as the story of the movie is telling a story of a girl who loves designing and most of the costumes are from the 90s and before, as Luke has mentioned in the video the studio could have hired a fashion historian to avoid any possible mishaps.
@@poonywooon Exactly! Not only is it fiction, but fantasy at that. The movie presented a surreal version of a time and a place, it by no means attempts to be considered anything close to a period piece nor do the same constraints apply. Cruella isn't like "Marie Antoinette" and those Converse sneakers (or the entire wardrobe choices in "Little Women" ) and neither should its fashion analysis since world-building operates under a different set of rules for its creative choices. The Oscar was well-deserved in this case.
Now that Luke’s talked about cruella maybe he could do an Eurovision 2021 review ?
I'm still hoping too!!

Girl, same. As someone who fiercely despises Disney live action remakes, I didn't hate this movie which is saying a whole lot.
@@tatianamelendez490 Same! went in with no expectations which made it so much better
@@vilina5331 Lol, when it comes to Disney live action remakes, I go in with negative expectations, so I was somewhat pleasantly surprised. As a standalone outside the source material, it's good. As a prequel informing Cruella's future character, it really failed.
I had one of the greatest moments in my life, going to visit Charles James while he was living in the Chelsea Hotel in NYC. Being interviewed for Warhols Interview magazine.I knew I was in the presents of a genius. The "moth dress" inside of the vault reminded me of Alexandrr McQueen's Spring/Summer 2001 Collection- VOSS, when in the finally
the four glass walls smashed onto the ground, revealing a naked Michelle Olley wearing a mask with moths all over her body.
One of the most divine moments on that geniuses stage!
I tots agree; that it doesn't take that much to have a fashion historian on your movie set for accuracies, in a movie with so fashion is included in the plot.
A trapeze dress with a bias cut does mimic an A-line (and is comfortable while still maintaining a tailored look, it’s my favorite summer office go to with a blazer thrown on to push it further towards business and away from casual), but the Baroness should know there is a difference between the two of she’s claiming to be a classically educated fashion designer. I do have designer friends who wouldn’t know the difference between a trapeze cut and an a-line, but they’re self taught and it’s not like a lot of the fashion terminology for cuts and styles is part of the normal high school coursework.
An a-line can have a minimal waist in the cut while a trapeze will just go straight from the shoulders and tends to have a more voluminous skirt. A-lines can lean on tailoring to give it shape while a trapeze cut leans on fabric type or manipulation to give it shape (jersey and bias cuts being particularly dominant). I think you could argue a trapeze cut is a type of a-line, but not all a-lines are trapeze cuts.
Luke, you look really good in that blazer! waist is snatched 😍😍

Considering that I've never seen any of the other 101 dalmatians or cruella movies and I went in with low expectations...I actually really liked this movie and the fashion didn't really care about character accuracy or anything I just thought it was really fun and actually well crafted but I guess if you're a long time fan of the series youd probably feel differently.
I was just happy the movie wasn't a snooze fest or had a incomprehensible plot....minus that ending where spoiler
she falls off a cliff and manages to not only dry off and get out of the water, change clothes in time to make a appearance as Cruella as the baroness is being dragged off to jail....plus the CGI right there was trifling
Lol, I definitely agree with the bad CGI, but she never went in the water, she had a parachute
@@j.ptracey2769 She landed in the water and then swam to the boat
the biggest issue: WHERE WAS THE FUR
i honestly think the lack of fur was a part of the punk aesthetics they tried to wedge into the movie. punks especially wouldn’t be okay with fur being used, especially because it’s not only cruel- but would make cruella seem more higher class bcuz of how furs have always been used in character portrayal. so all in all furs wouldn’t fit in with th punk ideology nor the fashion within th movie !!

They save it for the sequel.
Apparently their making a sequel so maybe ithere will be a topic about how she started obsessing over fur and they'll explain all those plot holes the movie left us with
@@miyauchislove9164 So... basically this movie is completely pointless then?
I'm surprised people are actually angry at Cruella for not being evil and not killing Dalmatians.
This was not supposed to be backstory for Cruella from the book! This is just a story, based on the book. Have you all seen Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix?? He wasn't the Joker from comics as well.

Could you also discuss the 90’s Cruella fashions? I think camp was more of the aesthetic for those? Are there also fashion nods/ influences that came into the imagining of those looks?
I love your videos and it’s always fascinating to hear from you the underlying references, nods and inspirations that helped shape the fashion you are discussing. And, yes, that last Cruella look is to die for🤯
For anyone who may be confused as to why she didn't wear any fur.....The movie is supposed to be Cruella in her younger days, before She was the evil Ms. De Vil. She doesn't develop her obsession with fur until she's much older. Also, they end the movie with a cliff hanger, if they are planning on making a 2d one I think that's when they will show Her passion for "The ultimate fur coat!" I hope that makes sense, stay safe everyone :)
When I watched the movie, I gathered that the moth scene was a nod to Mcqueen's Spring/Summer 2001 Voss show. With the vault door dropping to reveal the Mcqueen-style dress and the moths flying out while the audience was kept waiting all called back to that stunning show. Although it's obvious they didn't make this movie for fashion-lovers, I still got adore all the nods they managed to slip in!

You're so well researched that I'm having to stop watching this in certain moments to go and look up what you are referencing. Great video
Spoilers:
In my opinion they did cruella dirty just like Maleficent. She is supposed to be a villain not an antihero.
They just kept throwing in stuff like her mum dying and her real mom wanting to kill her to make her likable and explaining why she's evil and so made her too relatable.
On top of that her acting evil just was cringey because you know the movie isn’t on the side of being evil.
This is why Disney sucks at making villain movies, they’re so used to making good guy/girl movies that they fail the villain movies.
They dont suck at making villain movies.
Its just not what people “prefer” nor is it what THEY want to make.
The main reason shes evil is because she has blood of someone “evil”.
Not because her mother died and her real mother wanting to kill her.
At the end of the movie no one with a half decent brain thinks cruella is someone nice and good and relatable.
“Antihero” is and always will be a better route when making a good story about someone who mostly has a “negative” personality.
Because villainy like serial killers, psychopaths, animal cruelty made for the sake of villainy is boring storytelling wise.
People aren’t born villains. Seem you don’t understand this. Most times people become evil because of trauma - much like shown in Cruella. Nothing wrong with humanizing female “villains.” You’re viewing evil as so binary, which it’s so not. It’s incredibly nuanced.
Plus, this video is about fashion which this film *KILLED*
Also, spoilers much? Lots of people haven’t seen this yet.
And the last movie this director directed was I, Tonya, which is about humanizing someone the public much made into a villain when the truth was much more complicated.

The military jacket was also a huge motif of the punk music movement - very much a repurposing and reclaiming of a symbol of authority. It’s also symbolic for Cruella in her almost Napoleonic conquering of the position of it girl.

Both Emma's slayed their performances and every time a new outfit showed up I had to gasp
Also the story was much better than I had anticipated
Nice job with all of the explanations!! 👏👏 I can tell your content is evolving with the amount of research that goes into garment construction and history. A nice addition to the video (maybe a part II or podcast episode?), would be a focus on the swirl of conversation around industry licensing. The costume designer Jenny Beavan made it very clear that she was not involved in any of the Cruella licensing (e.g. merch), even though she was involved with the main film production. There are two sides to this, and it would be worth discussing both the creative side and the business side. I've got so many notes!! 😱
Don’t forget the great sound track. Thanks for info on all fashion origins. Love, love, love this movie.
VERY ready for this, you icon

Absolutely brilliant video! The depth of your knowledge is truly appreciated and now I'm even more excited to see this movie now knowing even more of the background of London fashion and the other fashion references in the film. Please do more videos like this one!!!
I love the history you include! Much of the specific modern stuff goes over my head but it is still all enjoyable and interesting. I'm also glad you like the movie- I thought it was fantastic in many ways and was worried you'd rip into it a ton as a fashion expert but as you said- it's a Disney movie.
I love how you made the algorithm fit your channel. Clever little sassafras you are
Everyone needs to realized this is her origin story. Not a live action remake.
Yessss. I was thinking the other day that the fashion style reminded me of Vivienne Westwood.
Luke , the props to Charles James are most appreciated! Speak of the master in hushed tones always. He may hear you!
This is wonderful, educational, set in context content. Well done 🙌
I knew the golden “moth” dress reminded me of something but I couldn’t figure it out. When I saw the Alexander McQueen outfit everything made sense😍😍😍
