Small, Far Away - The World of Father Ted, pt 5.

- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- On the 15th anniversary of its launch, this documentary follows Father Ted creators Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews as they return to Craggy Island on a road trip across Ireland, taking them back to some of the key filming locations from the series.
Father Ted captured a specific Irish humour rarely seen on screen and its impact doesn't seem to have faded. The show is revealed as a product of a pair of ambitious writers, a brilliant cast and the gently confident producer Geoffrey Perkins, whose suggestion of turning a one-off mock documentary into a sitcom helped make it the much-loved show it is today.
Ardal O'Hanlon, Frank Kelly, Graham Norton and many others pitch in with their reminiscences of the show, the passion it inspired and their memories of the late, great Dermot Morgan. - Комедії
There will never be another show like Father Ted. It's with out question the greatest Irish program of all time.
But it wasn't Irish.
@@whitefeather7529 it was ?
@@whitefeather7529 written by Irish people filmed in clare, Ireland produced by British company hat trick its a fundamentally Irish program distributed by a British company get your facts straight. Its Irish.
@@MrMartindunne1 Its Irish/British, its wouldn't have existed without C4 production.
Not just Irish I'm English and love it, watched it from being a kid.
Graham and Arthur say they had no idea they were making magic…believe me they were were making beautiful comedy magic that will last for generations, they should be very proud.
I genuinely always tear up with the 'Night Dougal, Night Ted' scene in the last episode. I think this just means the writers and creators didn't just create an absurd, 2 Dimensional world - but a fully, rounded hysterical invention that plays very close to our hearts. The Ted household was a brilliant, warm thing and provided many, many a laugh for my family. RIP Dermot.
I have the same feeling at that moment
This remains so true 8 years later. I’ve been rewatching the series and teared up at ‘Night Dougal, night Ted’ last night. Perfect way to end the show, and RIP to Frank Kelly too.
Perfect summary i literally just rewatched the series for maybe the 100th time and that gets me every time 😢 possibly the greatest comedy sitcom ever made
@@mollyi5642 dont forget Dermot Morgan
2023 and I m still in love with Father Ted characters😊
I lived in Australia when Father Ted arrived, everyone went around shouting DRINK! And laughing no stop at the reaction they got from doing so!
Best comedy I have ever seen, and I have at age 67 seen them all!
Cultural Treasures!
This documentary made me sad. One of the things about Father Ted that people don't talk about is how it was a brief little star that came and went in a very short space of time. On the last episode when Dougal says "You're going to be with us forever and ever and ever" and then it segways
Such a Great Documentary 👍🎭 about a fabulous show, Genius comedic writing and a Brilliant cast throughout the series R.I.P Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly 🥀
Irish people have a natural talent when it comes to absurd comedy, Beckett did it and Father Ted has it in spades. Pure delight :)
I think it's something common to all these islands. But Ireland definitely has its own twist on it.
A ton of Beckett - and of Flan O brien . They're a nation of poets - and it's the poetry of Fr Ted that keeps it so vital. It doesn't age, even after a million viewings.
It really does have a magic. It almost breaks my heart to really admit it's not real, they don't all still live in that house on craggy island! I'd like to go into the tv sometimes and live in that hilarious world with them all 😏
I am late to the Father Ted party only having "discovered" it on BBC America a few years ago. Without a doubt, this is the funniest show I've ever seen. I know most episodes back to front and I still laugh my ass off. I got the complete series on DVD for Christmas awhile back and you would've thought I was a kid getting my favorite toy. My hats off to all involved with this show.
Welcome to our greatest show
Great !
Father Ted will be always missed ... I still enjoy watching reruns when I get the opportunity ...
What a brilliant show. Doesn't matter how many time you look at it, it's still better than 99% of what has been made since. RIP Dermot Morgan.
Fantastic programme. There will never be anything like it. The ending montage homage to Dermot was so poignant, I cried.
RIP Dermot Morgan, Frank Kelly, Brendan Grace and Mary.

This series is proof that once every hundred years it is indeed possible to capture lightning in a bottle! ⚡❤️
Father Ted is the best comedy series ever made.
Dermot Morgan was a great actor his death kind of reminds me of the late great James Gandolfini both men worked so hard portraying the characters of Father Ted and Tony Soprano that it killed them but they were put on this earth to portray these roles and they entertained millions of people around the world RIP 1952-1998, 1961-2013 🙏🙏
I actually cried watching this. Dermot, how I wish you were still with us.
Me too
RIP Dermot Morgan, RIP Frank Kelly. XxX
Truly wonderful show. Satirical, surreal, daft and hilarious. Even though several biting swipes were taken at the Catholic Church, it was done in such a fun and innocent way that it didn't offend anyone. Can't believe it's now twenty years since Dermot Morgan died, but still very missed. RIP Frank as well. I can't think of anyone I've known who wasn't a fan of Father Ted, and it'll go straight alongside a handful of other great sitcoms that gets funnier the older it gets.
Biting swipes richly deserved.
Such a special, special show. I was privileged enough to watch it as a child with my father (Mark, not Ted) when it came out. I'll always remember the moment I found out that Dermot died. I was 9 year's old in class, in "year five" at primary school and a friend told me how he died and I was so shocked and upset and I can remember trying to picture how it must have happened at the dinner party. I don't know specifically why, but that moment has always stayed with me. I absolutely loved Father Ted. It represented very special times with my own father (now dead), bonding and laughing our asses off. I'm 35 now (2022). Rest assured if I have children, they'll be watching it, too... It will absolutely stand the test of time and be loved for years and years to come.
This almost made me tear up. As a British child introduced to Father Ted at a very young age and not getting any of the jokes, I still loved this show to bits, and when I grew up, it grew a million times better now I knew about all the Christianity-based jokes and Ted humour. It's still my favourite comedy of all time and I don't think that would ever change, the remix of the Father Ted theme, and Eoin McGloves song at the end of this are PERFECT.
Love Father Ted R.I.P Dermot
And Father Jack
Graham said “see you in another ten years maybe” we’ll it’s almost 10 years now so I do hope they do/have done something for it
Sorry, past self, your dreams didn’t come true. Have fun before the pandemic won’t you? Lockdown is definitely getting now I’m talking to myself from a year ago.
Just last week (July 14, 2022) I took my daughter's dog to a dog park in Central Finland.
In the park, with their dog, were a very young couple aged 24 and 25 (I asked them their age). I explained I am English. The guy said to me after a small chat, "Drink! Drink! Arse, Feck!" I looked at him and said "Then you must know Father Jack and Father Ted?". They both answered "Oh yes, we sure do!".
They went on to tell me how they have had enough of Netflix, Disney, etc. because hardly any of it is interesting and funny any more. They told me they found Father Ted clips on UA-cam and fell totally in love with it. They bought the entire box set online and have been watching it over and over, ever since. Their friends, also. It was the most memorable time for me that I have had discussing with Finns.
They told me they would love to visit Ireland and The House. I explained that I drove around Ireland a few years before and visited The House, The Cliffs, The Very Dark Caves, etc. I told them some good travel info (car rental, etc.), and how to end up in Dublin, which is a must, especially O'Donoghue's pub.
So, Father Ted seems to be once again enjoyed by our new generation.
One of the best Comedy Classics ever made.
May Dermot rest in peace his memory will live on forever
Had my grandmother, the quintessential Irish-Catholic who "went to church twenty times per week, plus an additional three times on Sunday", lived a few more years, she would have definitely laughed her a** off, then flown (Aer Lingus coach) to Craggy Island, washed Fr. Jack's mouth out with Lifebuoy, forced Fr. McGuire to go to confession, had an argument with Mrs. Doyle on the right way to make tea (always use Barry's Red Label), then she'd have visited Dermot Morgan's resting place, said a quick prayer - and then would have thanked him for "giving life to a TV show which made her laugh".
I'd have cancelled her cable before allowing her to watch Mrs. Brown on the Beeb.
Into an altered version of the theme song, with a montage of moments of the show, it was really a very sad and moving thing. Like watching your life flash before your eyes on your death bed. Ted carries a symbolism, and that symbolism is of the bittersweetness of something pretty which cannot stay forever.
I am no lover of TV or films or canned comedy but Father Ted was unmissable and to this day ( 2019 ) easily the best written and funniest comedy I have witnessed. Thankyou to all involved either side of the camera.
As an 18 year old I have only recently got into Father Ted but it is one of my favourite comedies of all time. It's just such a shame that I never got to see Dermot doing anything else...
I think Linehan is close to the best comedic writer I've seen/heard in a lifetime of watching comedy. His column on Klaus Kinski in Neon magazine still makes me laugh 25+ years later.
And here I am the weird american who loved this damn show. I didn't learn of it until the oughts and ... My god, you guys have a treasure over there.
Thanks for uploading this. I'm a huge fan from far awaaay..from Czech Republic.:)
One of the best comedies ever! I've must have watched it beginning to end at least 5 times and laughed each time. So sad that Dermot Morgan passed away when he did and couldn't be in this documentary. Now we've lost Frank Kelly too makes this more poignant. RIP Dermot and Frank.
Wonderful, wonderful TV.
Great programme. I always feel emotional when I see these parts of the series. One day I plan to go to the Parochial House. I looked it all up. Great series. Balance of everything was right and you could watch it all again in any order. Thanks for uploading. True pleasure to see.
I love Father Ted, my mum loves Father Ted, my young cousins from Ireland love Father Ted. It's the most beautiful, hilarious show ever, and it appeals to every generation. Dermot is the man.
Father Ted will go on and on for many many many generations because it is fec'n timeless.
Great watch, thanks for uploading! I've seen every episode a million times each but, when it was first released I was just a young kid watching it, strangely, watching this was very nostalgic. Those who fill us with laughter leave a legacy that can never die, Dermot will live forever!
Yes, thank you for sharing this.
Looking for my next UA-cam fix, I came across a show I had never seen or heard of . . . Father Ted. Initial reaction was cold-to-lukewarm. Then the characters swamped me and I loved them all. The scenery, the music, the boyish humour.
Each character and its actor was familiar, human, altogether hysterically funny at times, often quite honest, true to the human race I lived with as a child.
Art and artists to be treasured. In the name of Ireland!
Thank you, from one who found Ted late, on DVD or VHS, 2008. Such happy memories! Still watching. You bet!
Seeing all those behind the scenes clips made me tear up. They all got on so well with each other...
this was lovely! Thanks for uploading :)
Lovely Eoin McLove outro. Father Ted is an exquisite show. I can't begin to count how many times I've seen all the episodes. I never get tired of those lads and all the wonderful guest stars. A bonafide classic.

It warms my heart that this has over 70K views and no dislikes :)
In December 2023 ...1•5K likes and still no dislike. Exceptional for sure ...the legend lives on.
Completely forgot this comment
They really nailed it with this one. Comedy with heart.
Thank you for posting these!!! ❤
As I watch this ten years later, it's still a great story.
in a very morbid way: the fact that ted died the night of the wrap party, after the final scene of Dougal saying that he'd: "be here forever and ever and ever and ever.." does fit as an ever so slighlty comical final note. RIP you massive legends
Thanks you guys ! You made an old cynic laugh. And me too !
Easily in the top ten greatest British comedies of all time. And that is a TIGHT list. I love this show very much.
The greatest sitcom of all time.
Dublin ireland, still watching Ted all of you still laughing 😆😆😆😆😆😆😄😄😄😄😄THANKS
I'm so happy I found this show, love it. It's really sad about Dermont... Didn't know until after I watched the last episode :(
It was a shame Dermot died so young. Even if he never worked on Father Ted again. He could have gone on to become. A sort of Irish "version" of David Jason. 😔
I got so emotional watching this. So great to listen to the writers. I am deeply touched and grateful to everyone who brought this artistic vision to life.
I’ve watched since a kid at home. Still my favourite and I’m 48.
I cry watching father ted now.im miss that time in my life and father ted was part of the great time sad.rip ted and jack 😢 💔
R.I.P Dermott Morgan and Frank Kelly may both of ye bask in God's perpetual light for eternity never forgetton loved and missed by so many
Comedy at it's best... Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for uploading this!!
The Ted House, its a special place here in Ireland. I finally made it there in 2019 after watching the show over 20 years. Honestly I hope it becomes a national monument to Irish comedy and the show eventually.
An absolute gem of a show!!!!
Thank you thank you sooo much for sharing this with us. This was so beautiful, just a joy to get to watch. I can't thank you enough.
My favourite comedy !
Still love it. Genius in a bottle.
i was only 3 and a half when dermot morgan died, but i understand he was a well respected comedian
My name is Tracy. My best mate is Darren. We met Father Ted years ago and now have nicknames; me Doug (thick as shit), and Darren ( Jack) pisshead! My husband passed away who we called Ted.....Rest is history. We're still Jack and Dougal!!! Have a great night everyonr xxxxx
wow I enjoyed that immensely!
timeless comedy!
Brilliant doc brilliant show
The show has pure magic.
This show was absolutely fantastic. Im sorry it ended and even more saddened that Dermot Morgan passed away after. I still watch it and laugh as tho i watched it for the first time.
emotional hearing about filming last scene and his passing rip dermot our comedy entertaining hero
I just got transported back in time to a make belive island. I was more interested in the logistics since I had been employed to move the cameras here and there for Paramount. You really had a good team is all I have to say.
Dermot was a naturally funny man but I didn't know of him before Father Ted. I watched some of his stand up and his appearances on chat shows on UA-cam and he is fec'n hilarious . What a tragic loss at such a young age.
This will always be my favourite show, I probably know every line from every episode, drive my friends mad! Its just unbeatable, nothing will do it like Father Ted did!
i love this doc. thanks
Such a bunch of legends 💚
R.I.P Dermot Morgan, he made us laugh so.
Well said and spot on.
I absolutely LOVE father ted, it was a REAL shocking program when it first aired, everyone here in Ireland loved it the whole family watched and laughed, nobody made fun of the church and Ireland like father ted and it was brilliant. One thing I will say and ive not heard anyone ever mention this, im a huge bottom fan and i can tell the writers of father ted were aswell, i don't wanna say completely copying but their is ALOT of scenes in father ted that were originally in bottom. Both shows were phenomenal.
Fargo Boyle ........ f****** hell, that scene always has me in bits.
Almost ten years so do another please!
I love this show :(
Some people giving Pauline McLynn a hard time because she didn’t feel comfortable taking part in the documentary 🙄. It was entirely HER choice, so we should all respect her decision! She also stated in interviews that it wasn’t possible either as she had other work commitments, and was away whilst the ‘Small, Far Away doc was filmed.
Father ted is the best show ever. Where else have you ever heard of "ARSEBISCUITS"
The British Army.
thank you ;)
To the one person that disliked this, I would say, "careful now"
Probably Bishop Brennan.
Down with that sort of thing.
great upload ty
RIP Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly.
I was sitting in that very kitchen when the producers showed up to discuss making this show with the family that live there
Mad
Odd, that having watched Father Ted on yt since practicing day 1, this never popped up in the recommended till now, December 2023 fekkkin algorithms
you are Legend
2:29 very much caught me off-guard.
7:19 laughed at that sheeps bah so hard
Love from Pakistan . Careful now.
Still beautifully funny. Always will be.
I wonder how weird it was for the cast back then to go inside the actual house and then shoot the interiors of the fictional house within the studios...?
it's like that with most TV shows. Actual real houses aren't big enough to fit a cast and film crew all into a room. None of the houses in Coronation St or Eastenders are filmed on the inside, all done in studios.
