Off Grid Log Cabin Built by One Man: Log Gables and a Bushcraft Mystery

  • This is the fourth part of a series of short videos on my successful attempt to develop a totally wild and secluded place. In this episode, I will show you how I topped the side log walls with full log gables.
    Also, a strange thing happened while I was filming this episode. I was absent for only an hour at the cabin's construction site but found a canopy tarp torn through the reinforced seams. A human couldn't do that, a large animal wouldn't be able to get through the fallen trees to the construction site. I didn't hear any noise. The question is, who did it? It's a bushcraft mystery...

      You may find this an odd question but the media here tells us nothing about how people live in Russia;
      Do you own the land that your beautiful cabin is on or is it built on public land or National Forest.

      one comment, He is very tented but when you made the comment that he is just smarter than the rest of us is only half right... We all can learn but as humans, we have those who we (as a society) need to build roads, clean blocked sewer pipes, and plant trees and other plants. We need people from all walks and all levels of intelligence or what kind of world would we live in if there were cafes full of Einstein's and Teslas, (not the car.) Who would punch out the metal, who would build the cylinder head for a 1920's Bugatti or a hand dining room table? Did I make my point? It was friendly and not sarcastic, I hope that came across. Reminds me of “Alone in the Wilderness “ filmed in the 1960’s by Dick Proenneke, who did a similar thing in Alaska. He was about 50 years old when he started and lived into his 80’s in his secluded cabin. He documented the building and his life on film, decades before compact video recording was possible. It’s now preserved as a historic site by the state.
    Just because someone did something similar before does not diminish the accomplishment presented in this series. Both stories are great and are worthy of our attention!

      Brian Taylor A guy named Shawn James on the UA-cam channel My Self Reliance built a 2 story log cabin with only hand tools, alone. He’s also built a covered outdoor kitchen (with an earthen oven!), outhouse, and is finishing a separate sauna/bathroom while also starting on a traditional American Indian longhouse (this is the only project he’s ever had help on). Again, only with hand tools... He documents the entire thing in amazing detail and production value, whilst providing commentary and insight to his every decision. It’s absolutely amazing and very much worth the watch, if you’re not familiar with his work already. Again, that’s My Self Reliance

    I would use a wedge. A lever needs a constant, equal and opposite force. Whilst a wedge just needs the strength of the material it is made from.
    Thank you for asking this question... I've been thinking that I had to have a lever to lift my sofa to get bricks underneath by myself but couldn't figure out how I was going to hold down the lever and slide the bricks at the same time. Wedges are the answer. 👍. 💖🌞🌵😷
