    Just bought a 2004 Phoenix Yellow M3 and i figured an update should be my first task.
    Had a spare dvd lying around and already had IMGBurn installed. took me 10 minutes from download to update. really appreciate the work here.

    Hey Matt, I have spent the last coulple of years (1 or 2) making sure I have everything down pat when it cames time for install. This video is quit a few years old. I was hoping for new US maps here in the year 2023? I just order the MKIV4 computer, it will replace my factory installed MK3 Nav Computer. My Bimmer did come with the bigger display head unit from factory. I will also update the radio module so my 530i will accept the SiriusXM. I did find the SiriusXM insall kit the XM mounting bracket online. So, if you would please pass along any info on how to get my hands on 2023 US Maps, if available? Thank you...

    HI,
    Thanks a lot for a great video ! I followed the instructions and had no problem installing the new software ...except that I seem to have lost the choice of languages,and now I have no option but "English" embedded in the soft ! any way I could go back to French or do I have to live with the English version ?
    any help appreciated

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      Do you have a TV/video module in your car? Because this software should have nothing to do with the languages. This sounds like a compatibility issue you're having with the TV/Video module now. USA cars don't have that, so I can't be of assistance with it, but you probably need to have that updated as well.

    • @ivan30068
      @ivan30068 6 років тому

      Thanks a lot for your -very-prompt answer. No,I don't have a TV/Video module in my X3 ; I've just noticed that the Language Line in the Settings has disappeared and seems to have been replaced by a line offering to activate (or not) the Radar warnings. Another "mystery"of computer science ;-)))

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      That's extremely strange. I've installed that copy of the software dozens of times and never seen it affect the available languages.

    • @ivan30068
      @ivan30068 6 років тому

      When I looked carefully at some pictures of your video I noticed that the US version of the nav system is slightly different from the one we have in Europe -or at least in France .Is the line "Camera alert" standard in the US or is it part of your modified version ? I didn't have it before installing the mod version-which,by the way,together with the right nav maps, will be extremely useful here ;-)))
      My car is a 2004 X3 3.0 Turbo diesel (at the time no one would have dreamt of buying a gasoline X3 here !) and the choice of languages was English,German or French.
      One more question if you can find some time to answer : are radar detectors legal in the US or is just something of the past ?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      The modified version adds the camera alert function. Which doesn't function with the US map disks.
      Radar detectors are completely legal in all US states except Virginia. This applies to private vehicles. Radar detectors for commercial vehicles are illegal in many states.

    Not sure if you follow your comments here, but i did the procedure for the MK3 system. To start with, i had a hacked version on there, GB language setting was all russian. So i burned the stock mk3 version onto the CD as instructed, went to install, the screen popped up, the one before the "progress bar" screen and it stayed there for a good 15-20 minutes. I figured it froze up or something, so i tried to get the CD out, then cut the ignition off. Now when i turn the ignition into 1, it has updated the system, everything is back to english and all menu items seem to work, but the Navigation option has vanished and the nav-module refuses to spit the update disc out.
    What is up with that? Do i need to replace the module now!?

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  7 років тому +1

      That is very strange. Try holding the button for a while (maybe a minute or more) and it should spit out the disk. Also unplug the navigation computer (blue and magenta harness) overnight and see if that resets anything. Otherwise try the install / update again.

    • @UduLabor
      @UduLabor 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. So incase anyone follows this or has a similar problem, here's what happened. Basically, since it was late, and i couldn't get the disc out nor get the system to start the update process again, i left it as it was over night. In the morning, my wife drove to work (about 15 minute drive) and had the same view of the OBC as i had in the evening (everything worked but no nav option). Then a few hours later she went to run some errands and when she turned the car on and started driving, the "update bar" screen randomly popped up. She called to ask what the hell that was, so i just told her to let it run its course and not turn the car off before then (the engine was running, she was driving). After a few minutes, the system opted to accept the update, rebooted and now everything is exactly as it should be, all systems operational, the navigation is back and works, the module spit the update CD out and all's well. It even added some extra languages in the language section.
      I am not sure what happened and how it just decided to continue updating like that, but it finished it self. Meanwhile not me nor her, did any disconnecting or restarts to any of the system components.
      The car in mention is a 2001 X5 with MK3 nav system/OBC

      I don't even see the navigation option on the navigation screen any longer.

      TV is already in the software the rest is hardware. Mine has video input from 9" headrests with DVD loader. If I turn on both headrest I can then use the front headunit to display the DVD movie. Running blueray is hardware driven so you'd have to have a player to input to the front display but it wont really matter since the MkIV SatNav display is 16:9 and I think only 480p (maybe 720p but doubt it) and not HD or a 4K display. You can buy aftermarket touch screen headunits with the latest tech that are a direct fit for old E38/39 cars. I think they start at $250. As far as bluetooth goes my 01 740iL is wired for it (BMW ULF they call it) it's only for phone not music. Best just to buy an aftermarket headunit it you want all the latest stuff and don't waste your time with these very old mods.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      I know new aftermarket stuff can do a lot more. But for me, and many others, we want OEM components. I have Aux, bluetooth aux, and Sirius XM using BMW components (only aftermarket is bluetooth to aux dongle for glovebox). It works beautifully and is very clean.

    Just looked up the Mkiv navigation systems on eBay, and yeah no. I'll just stick with my phone for good navigation. No way in hell I'm going to pay $750-$2000 for it. Since getting my BMW, the main thing that's pissed me off about them is the massive price hike on everything for them. Even for simple shit that's $10-$15 for any other car is in the hundreds for my BMW. And performance stuff is even worse. $3,000 for 15hp. I really like my car, but this markup for everything is breaking my soul! lol

      Some parts are more expensive than others. Don't buy parts at the dealer, there are sites like ECS Tuning and FCP Euro that sell parts for these cars. The latter has a lifetime warranty on everything. And yeah performance upgrades can be a lot.
