That's interesting that the medals represent the ages of man according to the Greeks, but that does make me wonder why gold was valued over silver. Was it just more rare? Or just prettier? I can see where bronze could be thought of as violent, since the bronze age is a real historical period...

I have a fake gold medal for being the only competitor in my age group for a ski race and not crashing in either run :D.

Interesting take on the history of Olympic medals. I have indeed stood on a podium (of sorts) in my grade school gym, as we were awarded plastic Olympic medals for our efforts in events like the scooter luge.

The current winners of "gold" actually receive a gold plated medals, whereas the second place receive a solid sterling silver medal and I think it's the same from the bronze medalists. The Beijing Olympic medals are the most beautiful medals because of the fine jade they have.

You should get your facts straight. The IOC was formed in 1894. Baron Pierre de Coubertin wanted the first Modern Era Olympics to play at the 1900 Exposition of his native Paris -- but he got overruled by his international committee; and especially because the Greek delegation had found financing to mount the Games in 1896. Also, what you show as the "medals of 1896" are WRONG. They were rectangular pewter medals. The primary awards in 1896 were a scroll; a wreath of laurel leaves. The "medals" were actually just for particpation -- NOT for the victories. Also, why so nervous and high-strung?
Also, you should clarify that the Chinese abused their position as hosts in 2008 with (1) adding jade to their medals; (2) including another sport (wushu) in the competition an tried to pass it off as an Olympic "sport"; and (3) they were so recalcitrant in writing and submitting the Official Report to the IOC. The IOC rejected their first attempt at the OR; saying it was not consistent with how all the PREVIOUS Official Reports were written. After 1.5 years' delay, again MORE THAN A YEAR behind schedule; the Beijing people hardly corrected the first rejected version--but keeping all the self-heaped superlatives about how it was the greatest Olympic Games, etc., etc., And the IOC was already so frustrated in not having an OR on hand that they begrudgingly accepted that OR. I don't know how Beijing and the IOC fared in that regard again, after the Bejing 2022 Winter Games?
