I picked up a used RT 84 in mint condition for $20. It appears to never had programmed. Sadly, it's missing both the programming cable and I Can't LOCATE the Code plug or any software for this radio. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.
RF Hardware is slightly better in the RT-84, as it has separate full RF sections for VHF and for UHF. RT-3S aka TYT MD-380UV only has one wide band RF section, plus a filter near the antenna.
Questions. Does the rt84 have a protected battery like the rt82 ? (Live voltage at contacts, like the Baofeng have) Have you used the Retevis Contact manager that can switch between OEM and EXXT firmware as this seemed to work for my rt82. Cheers for the short vid, looking forward to more on the rt82 !
Thanks for the video. Nice stuff. I have the RT 84 and I am very happy with it, but could you explain the Scan function to me (in digital mode), this mode still remains a mystery to me. 73 de M6VMO.

Maybe in future reviews it might be a good idea to mention if a radio has these items available or not. It will certainly be a question I will be asking from now on. Live and learn.
I've been getting lots of questions about the RT84 lately and frankly I don't understand why. There are certainly much better "cheap" radios out there. But for whatever reason, the RT84 seems to have become popular overnight. Who knows. But good info about the battery. I will have to disagree with you about MTC though.
@@HamRadio2 Jason whether you disagree with me or not the radio I bought was a Christmas special and like the RT-84 I bought it because it was a cheap radio that had a couple of good reviews. MTC informed me via email 2 weeks afterward that the company had no plans to make any accessories and they just "got a good deal" that they passed on to customers. This is bad business and it may seem harsh but I've gotten to the point in life where when I'm deceived once I don't give a further chance on business deals. This Retevis radio business has soured me to the point that I plan to not move forward with any further plans on DMR or any other Digital radio that involves internet linking. Done.
Well it is your decision to do whatever you want to do, of course. I wasn't even aware that MTC ever sold the RT84. I thought you were talking about them in a separate situation. But you are seriously limiting yourself if you are dismissing ALL internet radio linking modes because of 1 model of radio that is new and untested. It doesn't make sense to judge the entire DMR mode, or any other mode, based on your bad (and limited, honestly) experience with 1 model of radio. I would say that for ANY 1-model of radio that you might try. But again, your choice...just know that there are thousands of users on DMR/Fusion/DSTAR and others that use it daily with no issues because they are using tried-and-true radios.
Hi. Does anyone know how to factory reset the retevis Rt84 radio without the pc software? A factory reset that can be done on the radio itself? Thanks. I'd appreciate the info.. 73's from ZR2CIA
Hi there. Is there a reciever that can pick up digital signals for emergency services. I use to have a uniden scanner which was analouge but now the emergency services have gone digital.
I just bought it and it's on it's way. Should be here by the 25th. Retevis has a new firmware & a codeplug to download. that was just added to the down load page last week. I'm looking forward to trying out my new radio. A note on the Retevis RT-84 which for some reason looks just like the New BaoFeng DM-1701. Take a look at the new DM-1701 and see for yourself. Izzie
We'll both radios has 3000. I read about the Baofeng DM-1701 B4 I looked at the Retevis RT-84 & ordered the Retevis in December. In the second week of January Retevis released a new firmware plus a codeplug wirh channels they collected.
I've never been able to get a good contact list downloaded for this radio. Using Contact manager and amateurradio.digital/ the formats don't work correctly. I don't like the way the screen looks because most of the data is missing. The CSV file will only give me name and callsign. Missing is the city, state, and country information. I have downloaded contacts from the ailunce website we will see if that works.
I've heard that this radio has had issues with getting codeplugs to work. I may need to do another video on it and try a deeper-dive into the codeplugs.
hey Jason, has anybody tried to upgrade their firmware for the RT-84 yet..? i didnt have one of my RT-84's in DFU mode and i dont know if i can get the english menu settings back again..
Are you saying that you tried to upgrade the firmware on the radio while not in DFU mode? If so, I am guessing you now have lots of lines on the screen. Upgrade the firmware again, this time in DFU mode, and it should fix that issue.
@@HamRadio2 yeah Jason all i had was the Menu tab in a different language but i got that all back to English. I'm good to go again :-) KC0CCB South Dakota
A friend of mine bought one of these on Amazon. He charged it and turned it on to find out it needed to be programmed. He gave it to me to take a stab at it. I'm an Extra class but have been out of the hobby for a while. New to DMR and this looks very interesting!. The problem I am having is if I try to connect via the RT84 software it is asking me for a password in order to connect. I am pretty sure my friend did not put in a password since he did not have the software. It wont take a blank password or 0000 or 1111. I see nothing in the manual about a default password. Has anyone else come across this issue? Or did I get one that some wiseguy returned?
Retevis tech support is excellent. They gave me the hack to get around this issue. Someone definitely had made changes (in chinese). I was able to recover and delete the very detailed passwords on the radio and the usb and then install a factory codeplug. Now I can try the things in the video!
@@HamRadio2 that does suck because I usually know where I am at but rarely do I know where I am going. Jason, I'd love to see a review on the Baofeng 1701. All the info out there is in a foreign language.
It is the same radio as this one - but I do have a 1701 here, so I am planning to do a video on it.

I'd like to see a review of the Alinco DJ-MD5T/TGP.

I'd like to see the battery compartment open, to see if this has FCC blessing printed there. (FCC cert. number)

The form factor is different on this radio than others, so batteries aren't interchangable.

Question can you program code plugs on the Fly from the keypad field programmable can you do that from k2csx Mark
RT84 cant program codeplugs on the keypad directly. It can edit channel information on the keypad.
