- The aria "Mentre dormi from Vivaldi's opera "L'Olimpiade," Christopher Lowrey, countertenor. Live, 4K ultra HD video from the Voices of Music "Art of the Countertenor" concert, March, 2016.
In Vivaldi's manuscript, the composer calls for mutes on all the bowed strings to create a serene atmosphere for this sleep aria. We have retranscribed the "B" section of the work based on our reading of the composer's abbreviations for the repeated notes in the strings, or "semicrome."
Vivaldi's opera premiered in Venice in 1734.
Text and translation:
Mentre dormi, Amor fomenti
il piacer de’ sonni tuoi
con l’idea del mio piacer.
Abbia il rio passi più lenti;
e sospenda i moti suoi
ogni zeffiro leggier.
While you sleep, may Love give comfort
to your restful sleep
with the idea of my own contentment.
Let the river flow slower and slower,
and all motion cease,
even to the slightest breath of air.

I just love Christopher Lowrey. He is an amazing singer!
Hi Bill, so nice to see you here. Hope you are both well
@@VoicesofMusic Well, very much missing concerts and especially music workshops and our weekly recorder and monthly loud band playing sessions. But I am getting out at least once a week to hike and do some photography. How are you both weathering this disaster?
Mainly staying home...being extra careful. Stay safe!
@@VoicesofMusic You stay safe too!
You are absolutely incredible Christopher! I love your voice! 😁👍👏👏👏💖
Thank you so much 🤗
What I needed to hear today
I’ve never heard this vocalist before. He’s wonderful.
Vivaldi + Lowrey + VM : Miracle, a gift from Heaven. Greetings from Belgium
Thank you from California.
Beautifully performed! It would be fascinating to hear a performance of this complete opera with these performers, because they do it so natuarlly!
Many thanks!
This music is truly food for my soul, it's so beautiful and uplifting. 💙💚💙
:)
This has got to be one of Vivaldi's best arias, so beautiful. So well performed by Christopher and Voices of Music.
My favorite counter tenor.
Move over, Philippe, I have moved on! What a wonderful singer. It really gave me a sense of how it would have sounded on stage in the 18th century.
Beautiful instrumentation and vocal performance...
Thankyou for sharing this with us all...
Many thanks
Wonderful, beautiful, musical bliss! Words struggle to describe the heartfelt eruption of emotions, which this display of collective musical talent and breathtaking vocal performance, ignites within the very soul of the listener ! 💖
what i like about Christopher lower, is his breath control so that every notes comes out clean and clear!
Beautiful piece! And so lovely Katherine Kyme.
We love Kati! (And all the rest)
Just what I needed after a long day! The amazing Christopher Lowrey and your very talented musicians! Thank you so much for helping to get us through this live music drought!
Thanks for listening.
Beautiful voice!
Reminds me of Paul Esswood 30 years ago
:)
have i gone back in time? this performance , the orchestra, the singer oh my world! i feel like i'm listening to it back in 1734. just breathtaking
This is so beautiful, it takes me away to another place when I listen to it. I absolutely adore Vivaldi but I mainly listen to instrumental pieces. It's performances like this, however that let me experience the beauty of his vocal works too.
Великолепное звучание оркестра и Лоури. Это чудесно.

I love his voice as well as Orlinki's but for me, Lowery's more mature and flawless in terms of control and breathing
Vivaldi was the Master !

6:22 - 6:35 wow!!!! what a beautiful line!!! I never saw a singer modulate like that alone in an unaccompanied line!! just wow!!!!
This gives me faith in a slightly struggle some time.
wat een schitterende verrassing, heel blij mee ! !
Siento que viejo a otra época al ver y escuchar este vídeo, realmente impresionante.
Wonderful voice Christopher!!
Love you all!! 💖
Thank you, Sara
Great to see a fellow Aussie!
I didn’t know that! What a superb rendition of this masterpiece!
This orchestra is the best at playing baroque music
:)
HELLO i can't wait
It's really lovely, see you soon :)
Mr. Lowrey's voice just sails through the air! Really beautifully sung - not an easy piece to sing, especially for a countertenor. The orchestra is perfectly balanced behind him and doesn't overpower him. Look forward to more by Mr. Lowrey! Where is this venue?

Great job, beautiful colors and impeccable recording. Only pay attention to the pronunciation, like the E is pronounced like an I in Italian and instead is pronounced E: "Fomente" not "Fomenti" also"piacer" is not "piaccer".
I have never heard Italian singers sing Fomente instead of Fomenti, like the recording of Vincenzo Capezzuto, for example. And many others.
It's 'fomenti' because it is the subjunctive.
