I needed to replace the deck belt on my grandpa's Bronco Troy Bilt. I followed the instructions on how to replace the belt but I didn't want to take off the actual deck itself, so the only challenge was loosening the pulleys required. Got the yard mowed and it's great.
Great video, EXCEPT the dropping the deck. Detaching and reattaching the deck adds another hr! Using the lever to drop the deck to " low" gives sufficient access. The most difficult part is getting up and down with knees that hurt!

My RM is a (2024.03.13) Troy-Bilt SB 50 xp, 24 HP and 3 blades 50" deck, its very heavy and hard to move the deck that I have to work direct on the garage floor. Honestly, I really love that large RM that I named that beast "Black Widow" "(^ . ^)" ... I wanted a Cub Cadet (that I wanted to name "Bee") but since MTD owns everything, I just wanted to change. I am sure I will have that RM "Black Widow" for the next 15 years !
Remove guards Remove old belt Loosen 9/16 bolt on right outside pulley- using 9/16 socket on top and 9/16 wrench to hold on bottom - don’t remove just tilt it enough to get new belt over pulley. Remove belt keep med wire over front drive pulley - (9/16 bolt on left and other end slips into place through frame hole-route new pulley and tighten right pulley using socket and wrench. Test new belt with tension lever and use your hands to pull belt through its path for blades to turn. Use any adhesive tape to tape 9/16” bolt to the socket ( make hole for threads ) Mount wire keeper in place. I leave the tape and don’t put L & R guards back in place- I do put all 6 bolts for guards back on deck to keep grass out of holes Good luck
Local shop put the wrong size belt on the wrong way. It felt way too tight, so I took it apart and found what they didn't think I would thanks to these videos. I saved $200 by servicing my own deck belt and blades. (I just dropped the deck and took it from there!)
I'm having the same problem Ryan . Enough so that I would like to go back to an old Snapper Comet . Those were bullet and idiot proof . Not saying EITHER one of us are idiots but this troy-built makes me feel like one
Well I can't get the belt on because there's not enough slack to get it around every pulley and still have the deck line up with its connection points. Nobody addresses this everybody just throws that belt right around the engine pulley like it's got all the slack in the world. I've watched 24 videos and everybody has missed that to explain it.
@@katelynrauch5331 you can loosen the deck pulleys. Also make sure you have the correct belt. You can also have someone hold back the idler pulley for you to get slack in the belt while you loop it over the pto.
Basically I fixed mine This video helps but you don’t need to follow it to a T I did not slide out the entire thing And I didn’t loosen the inner pullies I just worked then in.
Same I learned how to "floss the belt" when I'm in a pinch saves me time I just grab the belt both hands and pull it alternatingly into it fits back into place instill disengage battery though and I lock out the power in case any residual power and I put PTO into ENGAGED because it won't start if PTO is on, it is added safety

We replace the belt with the right size but for some reason I can't get the slack out of it. Once it's Crunk and you engage the blades the belt comes off. What am I not doing?
Sometimes the belt comes off the track on the inside pulley the (silver ones on the video) just push it back in between the pulley and the metal guide that should do the trick I just had to do it to mine when I set the desk too low in higher grass.. Hope this helps
On one of the pulleys you have to loosen there is a plate attached, on the plate is a small oblong cut-out about the size of a vitamin pill 💊. It attaches there.

Waste of time. It takes longer to take the deck off than the belt replacement. Lower deck, remove the pulley covers, loosen bracket at motor pulley and remove belt. Install new belt in reverse order. Takes about ten minutes for the average person.
Not goofy at all. This dude must have tiny racoon hands if he can take all this off with the deck on. And it's nice to be able to clean and Grease stuff but I guess you don't take care of your stuff.@@strengthandhonor9334
The troy bilt I have is different. You have to remove pulley 2 and 3 and they are loose and move when you try to break the nuts loose because they are not brand new and shiny like this video. The brackets below them move constantly and I can't figure out how to fix it in place without damaging the metal of the pulley.
You guys need to fix this video. After a new belt lasting about 5 mows falls off and totally worn down, I finally figured out what was going on. I'm by no means a mechanical genius, thereby my having to use this video. You guys did not put the belt back where it was originally when you took the belt off. I paid attention to the putting belt back on part and you can see where the belt guard is rotated around to t he wrong place. Makes for extreme belt wear and my newest belt just snapped right off cause of it. Finally figured it out by seeing where it was located when you took the belt off. Being this is a TROY BILT video and not just some dude, you should at least take the time to do the thing right.
Guess you didn't notice that when they put the belt around the drive pulley it was loose enough to just fall off. I just did mine and I didn't even take the deck off, probably took half the time.
I should have taken a couple more pictures which is my fault...but I've got 2 springs and I'm not sure where they go. Manual or vid springs seem to be glossed over
this video is pointless,all you have to do is remove the 2 main pulley covers and loosen one idler pulley to get the belt off,without removing the deck and all that other crap!
Yea I did the same thing. It looks easier to work on and I think it’s a common practice but I didn’t want to do it this way. Shops do it all the time though because it’s faster if you know how to take it apart. People sometimes put it back together wrong though and screw up the factory deck height

Mine stays loose , will engage and cut but throws completely off of pulleys when disengaging no matter how fast or slow you disengage . Forget about changing height while mowing or you're off on the ground putting it back on hot pulleys .....
+Beau Christopher Yes, for safety disconnect the battery but only the negative (black) cable is required as stated by Bill...why they would say disconnect the positive BUT BE CAREFUL is nuts...never disconnect the positive while the negative is still connected...
It sure it. This is my first belt change and I have 2 springs with no clear home lol and I've sweat enough for 2 jobs because its July and my a/c went out too lol
This was way better than staring at exploded diagrams, but lose the part about the key, spark plug, and battery disconnect. It's a mechanical problem, not an electrical one! The mower cannot "accidentally" start if you're not on the seat! All I needed to do was replace the PTO spring for which the local rip off mower shop would've charged me $200! Learn to fix your own stuff is the way to go.
I hava a 2011 Troy Bilt Horse XP with 46" deck (mod 13WX79KT011). The deck parts diagram specifies a 103.25"x .05" deck belt but this must be incorrect. I have replaced this belt 3x with different brands of v-belts of this recommended size, and ALL of them were so loose that blades would not engage after pto was engaged. All pulleys are good, new pto cable and spring, belts all routed correctly but still no joy. The recommended v-belt size of 103.25" x .05"is INCORRECT. Installing a 102.25" x .05" belt works just fine though, so if your deck hardware is in good shape, your "recommended" deck belt is new and routed correctly but after engaging the pto your belt is still too loose to engage the blades...go with a smaller belt than what the parts diagram shows. This problem seems to be very common to Troy Bilt mowers, and this will save you from endless hours of frustration!

This really made it easy to change the belt, but the belt is so loose that it won't engage the blades. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if the old belt was loose in the first place and that's why it broke and needed to be replaced. I really don't want to keep spending $300 at a time to have the mower towed and fixed but it keeps happening. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Did you put a new belt on? Did you reinstall the spring on the idler pulley bracket that's from the PTO cable? If you did and you loosened the idler pulleys, you have to make sure that the bracket especially the engagement bracket are in the correct position. Let me know if you got it fixed. I know when my belt got worn out it wouldn't engage until I turned the engine off, lowered the deck, reached over and manually moved the idler bracket till it put tension on the belt. Started mower, blades engaged, I knew then it was time for a new belt. After I finished mowing I replaced the belt without pulling the deck out. All you have to do is lower deck, remove belt covers, remove belt holder at the engine, loosen the idlers just enough to slip the belt out, install new belt, tighten everything back up. Then put the covers, and belt holder at the engine back on.
Anybody that might need to unhook and disable every part of the electric system before changing a belt on a mower that isnt running and the key is and no one sitting on the seat to disable that safety because of this way over the top , political correct, safety measure to prevent a thing that can't happen and probably never has , this person should put the tools up , shut the hood and call someone with common sense to just sit them in the corner and away from the key while they safely slip that belt on. I'd say for those who let them who direct there motions in matters of safety thru multiple fail safe steps so as to give credit to there communist training measures that are designed to train them to follow dictorial instructions by habit and adhere to the correctness , no matter how unnecessary and ridiculous it obviously is ! But your vid , showed me the routing pattern and I appreciate that!
Did you find out what size belt it is? It’s not on my mower at all. Not on the deck, not under the hood, not near the battery. No where. I don’t have the manual either. I went into Lowe’s, they gave me 954-0498, it is too short at 66.9 in., my local lawnmower place, they said that part number too. It isn’t as long as the one in the video.
I know of no way to adjust the speed of any walk behind aside from changing the pulleys, which would basically require re-engineering the entire assembly. Please understand that I don't know your specific model, but am just giving you information based upon the way the self-propellers are commonly engineered.
why did you rotate the belt guard 90 degrees (the left pulley as you look at the video) ? I believe there is a notch to seat it rotated 90 degrees right as you view it. Won't the belt jump off as shown? There must be some deleterious effect.
I have a question, maybe you can help me, Coincidentally, I recently changed the drive belt and I don't know if that will be the cause of my problem, I have a Troy bilt pony (2011), now I can only control the speed with the throttle lever, even when I put it in rabbit mode the motor goes at high rpm, but the ground speed is about half the normal speed; the (yellow on mine) speed control lever doesn’t work, it goes up and down without locking the notches, offers no resistance and does nothing. (however, the engaging of the parking brake action works fine). I opened up the mower and saw the yellow speed control lever attached to a connecting rod which is attached down there to the cupped metal piece in the correct position as the new Troy Bilt Pony I saw yesterday at Home Depot, but besides allowing to be put in in park position, I don’t see it attached to anything else, is it right? How does it regulate the speed if it is not connected to anything else? Thank you in advance.
The speed is regulated by another rod underneath that's attached to a bracket on the transmission, when you replaced the drive belt did you remove the transmission belt? Did you put it back on? Did you replace the transmission belt spring back on?
Do not follow this video. Never remove the positive terminal of a battery without first removing the ground terminal and if you remove the ground terminal you do not need to remove the positive terminal.
Way too much info, video is obviously made by someone in a shop who does this all the time, looses sight of the home owner that has never done this before. Mower used looks new, like 1940's model. Needs to update to atleast year 2000.
I have 3 Troy-bilt walk behind mowers and bought the Pony because I had good luck with walk behinds. What a mistake, this thing shakes itself to death from day one. After one year and a new deck, spindles, pulleys, belt, etc... it's no better but my pocket book is a lot lighter. Never again will I purchase a Troy-Bilt product. The only thing good I can say about the Pony is it has a nice paint job.

A Deck belt Should last us for years but they don't . The main problem with them is We have a single long belt, that has to drive multiple blades. Belt failure is inevitable But It not just cause by heat though it can be cause by friction As we all know, that if the deck belt come in to contact with any metal on the deck that not a roller that metal will soon chew though the deck belt, and brake it. The main problem is! That single little deck belt can be driving up to three blades. Imagine you have a term of 18 horses pulling on that single 1/2 " belt on most engines on a car or farm machinery they have multiple belts one for each load on a push mower we have 6 hp engine driving a single blade But with multiple blades we have three times the Brake hose power 18 hp to a 24 hp engine pulling on a single 1/2 " deck belt. It why After a while the over loaded deck belt will start to stretch. And then brake. On on a walk behind mower. on most mowers The engine shaft spins at 2900 rpm But on a ride on mower they typically spin between 2700 and 3200 rpm So that blade is doing over 200 mph plus, at the tip of the blade. In most countries The governments regulates the max tip speed of the blades on all mowers. There controlled though the engineering of the rpm of the engine. The key to long lasting deck belts is to cause let load on the blades. You can achieve this just by keeping the blades sharp. Once the blades go blunt they put more strain on the deck belt and can stretch it.
hey matt, me too. i've had mine 10 yrs and i just about to change my 1st belt. no other problems either. motor still runs great and uses no oil. i've taken decent care of it , but nothing special.
A new belt should last 5 years. Mine did and I live in south Georgia where you cut lawn 12 months out of the year! What pisses me off is that every time you need to back up you have to shut off the cutting blades or the "safety" shit on it kills the engine. Every time the blades are engaged it stresses and wears on the cutting belt, shortening it's life. I designed my landscaping so I never have to back up anymore! Also, though, an out of position pulley will wear out a belt in a hurry.
Simplicity is the way to go..the original deck belt lived 14 years and I can remove my 38" deck in 3 minutes for cleaning and blade sharpening..no joke!
That belt was loose af when he was done, no way that doesn't slip and burn up once engaged. Have one of these and someone threw the original belt away, out the replacement belt on and it will not cut, just slips on the pulleys. And yes all pulleys are free and not binding etc. Bought the belt number that is stamped on the deck and routed accordingly. About to scrap this troy bolt and buy a cc or JD.

you should took back sounds like you got a lemon cause my dad had one for 35 yrs never a issue one we have we have had for 9 yrs plus other one we have had for 7 yrs next time take back cause you got a lemon

Looks similar to my Huskee 46” which I bought used with mower deck detached. Owners manual has one diagram and no other directions. Wish the mfr would make a video like this.

Why would you disconnect the hot and not the negative? Good way to short out the cable and put on a light show...

Make sure belt keepers are close to pulley to keep that sucker from flying off. I find belts on mine tend to come off when you disengage PTO.

Belt is TOO lose, There is an adjustment ( three holes in bracket), the sound is belt slipping.

Never disconnect the red cable first (positive), ALWAYS negative cable first...
Not only that, but you could remove the negative cable only. Frankly it's an unnecessary step.

There is a hole on the idler pulley bracket.
This was way better than staring at exploded diagrams, but lose the part about the key, spark plug, and battery disconnect. It's a mechanical problem, not an electrical one! The mower cannot "accidentally" start if you're not on the seat! All I needed to do was replace the PTO spring for which the local rip off mower shop would've charged me $200! Learn to fix your own stuff is the way to go.
At the 1:34 mark, what kind of bolts are used for the outer deck covers? And how many?

I hava a 2011 Troy Bilt Horse XP with 46" deck (mod 13WX79KT011). The deck parts diagram specifies a 103.25"x .05" deck belt but this must be incorrect. I have replaced this belt 3x with different brands of v-belts of this recommended size, and ALL of them were so loose that blades would not engage after pto was engaged. All pulleys are good, new pto cable and spring, belts all routed correctly but still no joy.
The recommended v-belt size of 103.25" x .05"is INCORRECT. Installing a 102.25" x .05" belt works just fine though, so if your deck hardware is in good shape, your "recommended" deck belt is new and routed correctly but after engaging the pto your belt is still too loose to engage the blades...go with a smaller belt than what the parts diagram shows.
This problem seems to be very common to Troy Bilt mowers, and this will save you from endless hours of frustration!

This really made it easy to change the belt, but the belt is so loose that it won't engage the blades. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if the old belt was loose in the first place and that's why it broke and needed to be replaced. I really don't want to keep spending $300 at a time to have the mower towed and fixed but it keeps happening. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Did you put a new belt on? Did you reinstall the spring on the idler pulley bracket that's from the PTO cable? If you did and you loosened the idler pulleys, you have to make sure that the bracket especially the engagement bracket are in the correct position. Let me know if you got it fixed. I know when my belt got worn out it wouldn't engage until I turned the engine off, lowered the deck, reached over and manually moved the idler bracket till it put tension on the belt. Started mower, blades engaged, I knew then it was time for a new belt. After I finished mowing I replaced the belt without pulling the deck out. All you have to do is lower deck, remove belt covers, remove belt holder at the engine, loosen the idlers just enough to slip the belt out, install new belt, tighten everything back up. Then put the covers, and belt holder at the engine back on.
It's also possible you have the wrong belt.

Anybody that might need to unhook and disable every part of the electric system before changing a belt on a mower that isnt running and the key is and no one sitting on the seat to disable that safety because of this way over the top , political correct, safety measure to prevent a thing that can't happen and probably never has , this person should put the tools up , shut the hood and call someone with common sense to just sit them in the corner and away from the key while they safely slip that belt on. I'd say for those who let them who direct there motions in matters of safety thru multiple fail safe steps so as to give credit to there communist training measures that are designed to train them to follow dictorial instructions by habit and adhere to the correctness , no matter how unnecessary and ridiculous it obviously is ! But your vid , showed me the routing pattern and I appreciate that!
What size belt is needed for this mower? I have the exact same mower. What belt model number?
The belt number should be on a sticker under the hood. I have a bronco and that's where mine is.

Did you find out what size belt it is? It’s not on my mower at all. Not on the deck, not under the hood, not near the battery. No where. I don’t have the manual either. I went into Lowe’s, they gave me 954-0498, it is too short at 66.9 in., my local lawnmower place, they said that part number too. It isn’t as long as the one in the video.

For safety, insulate wrench handle with electrical tape.
Just disconnect the negative instead of the positive. That's actually the correct procedure.

I know of no way to adjust the speed of any walk behind aside from changing the pulleys, which would basically require re-engineering the entire assembly. Please understand that I don't know your specific model, but am just giving you information based upon the way the self-propellers are commonly engineered.

why did you rotate the belt guard 90 degrees (the left pulley as you look at the video) ? I believe there is a notch to seat it rotated 90 degrees right as you view it. Won't the belt jump off as shown? There must be some deleterious effect.
I have a question, maybe you can help me, Coincidentally, I recently changed the drive belt and I don't know if that will be the cause of my problem, I have a Troy bilt pony (2011), now I can only control the speed with the throttle lever, even when I put it in rabbit mode the motor goes at high rpm, but the ground speed is about half the normal speed; the (yellow on mine) speed control lever doesn’t work, it goes up and down without locking the notches, offers no resistance and does nothing. (however, the engaging of the parking brake action works fine). I opened up the mower and saw the yellow speed control lever attached to a connecting rod which is attached down there to the cupped metal piece in the correct position as the new Troy Bilt Pony I saw yesterday at Home Depot, but besides allowing to be put in in park position, I don’t see it attached to anything else, is it right? How does it regulate the speed if it is not connected to anything else? Thank you in advance.
The speed is regulated by another rod underneath that's attached to a bracket on the transmission, when you replaced the drive belt did you remove the transmission belt? Did you put it back on? Did you replace the transmission belt spring back on?
My friend replaced mine never removed the deck.

Do not follow this video. Never remove the positive terminal of a battery without first removing the ground terminal and if you remove the ground terminal you do not need to remove the positive terminal.

Way too much info, video is obviously made by someone in a shop who does this all the time, looses sight of the home owner that has never done this before. Mower used looks new, like 1940's model. Needs to update to atleast year 2000.
I have 3 Troy-bilt walk behind mowers and bought the Pony because I had good luck with walk behinds. What a mistake, this thing shakes itself to death from day one. After one year and a new deck, spindles, pulleys, belt, etc... it's no better but my pocket book is a lot lighter. Never again will I purchase a Troy-Bilt product. The only thing good I can say about the Pony is it has a nice paint job.

A Deck belt Should last us for years but they don't . The main problem with them is We have a single long belt, that has to drive multiple blades. Belt failure is inevitable But It not just cause by heat though it can be cause by friction As we all know, that if the deck belt come in to contact with any metal on the deck that not a roller that metal will soon chew though the deck belt, and brake it. The main problem is! That single little deck belt can be driving up to three blades. Imagine you have a term of 18 horses pulling on that single 1/2 " belt on most engines on a car or farm machinery they have multiple belts one for each load on a push mower we have 6 hp engine driving a single blade But with multiple blades we have three times the Brake hose power 18 hp to a 24 hp engine pulling on a single 1/2 " deck belt. It why After a while the over loaded deck belt will start to stretch. And then brake. On on a walk behind mower. on most mowers The engine shaft spins at 2900 rpm But on a ride on mower they typically spin between 2700 and 3200 rpm So that blade is doing over 200 mph plus, at the tip of the blade. In most countries The governments regulates the max tip speed of the blades on all mowers. There controlled though the engineering of the rpm of the engine. The key to long lasting deck belts is to cause let load on the blades. You can achieve this just by keeping the blades sharp. Once the blades go blunt they put more strain on the deck belt and can stretch it.

hey matt, me too. i've had mine 10 yrs and i just about to change my 1st belt. no other problems either. motor still runs great and uses no oil. i've taken decent care of it , but nothing special.

A new belt should last 5 years. Mine did and I live in south Georgia where you cut lawn 12 months out of the year! What pisses me off is that every time you need to back up you have to shut off the cutting blades or the "safety" shit on it kills the engine. Every time the blades are engaged it stresses and wears on the cutting belt, shortening it's life. I designed my landscaping so I never have to back up anymore! Also, though, an out of position pulley will wear out a belt in a hurry.
Simplicity is the way to go..the original deck belt lived 14 years and I can remove my 38" deck in 3 minutes for cleaning and blade sharpening..no joke!

That belt was loose af when he was done, no way that doesn't slip and burn up once engaged.
Have one of these and someone threw the original belt away, out the replacement belt on and it will not cut, just slips on the pulleys. And yes all pulleys are free and not binding etc. Bought the belt number that is stamped on the deck and routed accordingly.
About to scrap this troy bolt and buy a cc or JD.
