  • The iodine value is the mass of iodine in grams that is consumed by 100 grams of a chemical substance. Iodine numbers are often used to determine the amount of unsaturation in fats, oils
    This video represents a complete procedure for determination of Iodine Value of oil samples.

    Thanks for your wonderful and passionate video. It's really useful for my work. I wonder some point that could you explain for me, please.
    1. Why we certain use Carbon Tetrachloride in this experiment. Can you explain in detail the reason why you use Carbon Tetrechloride? Can I replace it by other substane?
    2. I wonder if you put Potassium Iodide crystal around the stopped? Why don't we use the solution of Potassium Iodide?
    3. In the phase that you pour distlled water into the flask, you titrate the flask with Sodium Thiosulfate until the yellow is lighter before you add the starch solution in the flask. So I wonder the reason why you must to titration before adding the starch solution. Is there any theory in this phase? I really want to know.
    I truly appriciate your support and I am looking forward to hearing from you. Many thanks

    Hi, thanks for making this video! It is really helpful. I have been doing my experiment about how the number of times heating the corn oil till boiling will affect the oil’s iodine value and I realized that as I did titration, there was a layer of oil-like solution at the bottom of the flask. Do you know anything about this and why does it happen? Because it has became really obvious and disturbing since the oil darkened as the heating number increased.

    My question is not about AOAC but about AOCS methods, that before weighting the sample, sample must adjust temperature to 68 -71 celsius deg. I wonder what is the purpose of sample temperature adjusting?

    • @MicroChemsExperiments

      Chemistry is all about chemical reactions. Chemical reactions takes place differently at different temperatures. So the adjustment of temperature is very crucial for any chemical analysis of sample.

    • @MicroChemsExperiments
      @MicroChemsExperiments  3 роки тому +1

      The expected value of different samples is given nowhere at a place. You have to find one by one. Say for example, you want to test iodine value of soybean oil. Then search on google by "Iodine value of soybean oil".
      ***Google will show you normal iodine value of soybean oil.
      ***Another source is Published Journals about "Studies on Soybean Oil".
      ***You can also find the normal iodine value range of your country's "Standard Of Soybean oil"
      Search the value following above 3 ways and get the idea.
      NB: If not works above steps, then test your sample thrice considering medium, high & low value. Then you will get an idea about the expected Iodine value of your sample.
      Thank you.

      Ekin Gursoy, Thanks for your comment. Actually, when Wij's solution is added, it reacts with Iodine present in the sample to form slightly volatile compound. If we left open then loss of iodine may occur. That's why we keep the flask closed immediately after adding carbon tetrachloride and Wij's solution. Other two references for this test are: IS-548 and FASSAI MAnual.

      Not iodine value actually. Blank reading represents the chemical error for iodine value test

    Hii! first of all, your videos are very helpful. But may i ask something, why is blank titration necessary in the this determination(iodine value det.)? I hope you answer me ,thank you so so much

    After preparing sample in IV flask And during kept in dark for 30 minutes why we use KI Salt on the top of the cap of the flask ??

    • @MicroChemsExperiments
      @MicroChemsExperiments  3 роки тому

      Goutam Gupta, Thanka for your comment.
      According to AOAC method, you need to add KI. KI crystal is added on the top of the cap. The reason is: it prevents the transportation of volatile substance from the flask to the outside environment. Rather KI crystal absorb the volatile material from the cap and enter into the flask during washing with water.

    1. During titration, iodine flask should've been covered with the stopper throughout in order to avoid the escape of iodine gas.
    2. calculation should've shown the units also
    3. It should've been 126.9 g/mol, since that is the molecular weight of iodine.

    • @daniellekeller371
      @daniellekeller371 Рік тому

      Regarding 3.: Yes, but you have to divide by 10 to get the correct unit for the IV, which is g(I2)/100g(fat). It would have been obvious, if the correct units were used in the video.

    Why initial value sample of 25.6 ml and blank 2.7 ml take in burette

    • @MicroChemsExperiments
      @MicroChemsExperiments  3 роки тому +1

      We started titration of sample first. In this case, initial reading was 25.6 and the titration was finished when the final burette reading was 39.2.
      We refill the burette again and start blank titration when the initial burette reading was 2.7 and finished when the final burette reading was 39.1.
      NB: we did not refill the burette completely thats why the initial burette reading was started at 25.6 and 2.7 for sample and blank. There is no specific reason for it. You can start both titrations (sample & blank) from 0, 1 or any other initial point. There is no limitation in it. It's up to you that from which point you want to start.
