I am in reno for vacation now. It's still everywhere. I think the data is inaccurate.
Drugs play a key role in both city's homelessness. While San Francisco allows for open-air drug markets, the state of Nevada does not. Although Nevada legalizes the possession of small amounts of marijuana, the state still implements strict laws on the possession and distribution of controlled substances.
Right, it counter productive that it seems like the Californian politicians are not just open to allowing these drug addicts to obtain drugs, but it’s backfiring because they are pushing it. While it can be harmful to go cold turkey, it’s worse to encourage it in the first place. I swear no one running this state has basic common sense, over 10 years ago this state was prosperous for generations, now it’s a shit hole.
California has the same laws, for some stupid reason. The justice system has a catch and release mentality. So the problem with homelessness here isn’t going to be solved.
@@melviasheppard8466 There is no more room in the jails. All our money is going into the criminal justice system, and we keep building more jails and prisons. This is at the expense of everything else, which we used to have, such as housing subsidies, mental health care, and so forth.
I have a long memory. I remember that it was in1981, just after Regan got put in office, that the homelessness population started to explode. That was not a coincidence.
We can't imprison our way out of social problems. We have been trying to for 42 years now, and it still has not worked.
The drugs tend to happen while they're homeless (because homelessness is terrifying and people need an escape). Providing housing stability would make kicking the habit much more realistic.

Great work there in Reno. Unfortunately, SF is a corrupt city and nonprofits there need homeless people so they can continue to get grants from SF. Most of the money goes to administrators of these nonprofits. Very poor leadership in SF and no accountability.

There is a price to pay but it's clear they either have too much pride to admit their catastrophe or it was all intentional, a goal stemming from hate of this country & a want for destruction. People are not safe under democrats. I spent my life between California where my dad did his PhD at cal tech, and Massachusetts, and I lived in Arizona. When Arizona was run by Republican majority, they had a surplus that funded community college free for residents. It declined drastically thanks to illegals depreciating wages, overcrowding and bums from Los Angeles moving in for "cheaper" living. Bringing their destructive political crap!!! Massachusetts and California are obvious leftist hells with no hope other than God's return!!! Conservatives would have to be brought in to recruit better employers and business, to promote growth and rid of the drug coddling "culture" and welfare promotion. It is okay to support people, as long as they are contributing in some way, making an effort. Volunteering, taking courses, they have a goal. Our elderly and legitimately disabled should be cared for a lot better than they are!!! An they don't because the resources get stolen for illegals and drug addicts, that's got to change. My colleague who is a NYC investigator for the dept of homelessness tells me they are now having to "serve" illegal aliens instead of working cases for elderly legal citizens on the street!!! This needs to be criminalized. Any politician putting illegal criminals over Americans should be fined severely & imprisoned.

It's not the shelter beds alone, it's homeless people refusing them. San Francisco refuses to push people off the street who need to be in shelters. Homeless activists in SF have already demanded that homeless stay in downtown and they would lose their minds if anyone suggested they go into a metal tent. Activists are demanding a million dollar apartment for every person. No way this would fly in SF.

@@U4Eye Push the homeless off the street before there are shelter beds for them, as Reno's has done, and the homeless in the 9th circuit court States, that includes California and Nevada, can sue the state. San Francisco has not enough shelters to be able to clear the streets. Reno is able to go back to a time, before Trump's Supreme Court left the West with this mess, and ask people to not set up housekeeping in public spaces.
It's amazing to hear a city who really addressed this problem. I still don't have hope for CA though.
It's amazing how CA officials can't figure it out and have to look to others that have a better idea of what's going on in their state to solve our at least attempt to tackle the homeless/drug issues.

You can't ship people away from wherever they grew up and everyone they know just because you're uncomfortable. Solve the root problem, housing is too expensive and cost of living is too high and people don't get paid a living wage, health insurance is too expensive and there is no social safety net

I worked with homeless in Stockton, you’d be surprised how many homeless from Reno that were given bus tickets to Stockton with no means of support despite being promised some.
Also, Bay Area cities don’t get as cold, and the homeless don’t have as much of an incentive to tolerate and meet the rules of facilities and shelters.

What happened is most of those people left and came to California. Since they can’t pitch a tent on Reno, they moved along over the border.

They can pitch a tent in Reno because Nevada is part of the Ninth Circuit and bound by Martin v Boise as of 2018. However, 90% of homeless people in California are from California, and 75% are homeless within the same county as when they were housed (USCF California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness)

Absolutely zero verification is done on those claims, and they think it makes them seem more worthy of funding help.
Over a 2.5 year period in my CA County/City the count was 2500 to nearly 4000 and they insisted 80-90% were locals...
But I myself was out and near the largest homeless zones nearly every day and many evenings-
I watched, listened, and directly engaged.
I came across TWO homeless that were actually even from this region, let alone locals to the city they were in.
Many MANY are not. But they will say they are to get help or qualify for services

Not that it was right, but at least it made more sense. Going somewhere with a lower cost of living and better chance of getting by. Not so of shipping folks from Reno, NV to more expensive areas in California. If I remember right, these Reno homeless were mental patients sent with only a few day's worth of water, food vouchers and medication. So shameful.

There is more homelessness in Reno now. But the people are nicer and very respectful. Back in 2020 winter, while I was there I tried to give sandwich and cookies to an old lady. She was shivering in cold.she was old and frightened but her smile and appreciating I will never forget. Winters in Reno is extremely cold. Glad the city of Reno and the county is doing something.

I live in a different region in California but the transients here are spoiled, entitled, rude, and nuisance. Everyone in the region has given up trying to help because of how it just contributes to encourage more transients to abuse the goodwill offered to them. The region is an area that was heavily affected by a horrible wild fire that caught a portion of the city on fire, there’s a huge difference between the attitude of those who lost their homes in that fire compared to this in as toon of transients.
I’d say Reno ironically is more relatable to the area I’m from culturally than any other area of the state, more down to earth attitude that pushes back when a line has been crossed. Reno is at least in a state that is working to focus on helping the community and citizens of those they represent, unlike California that imposes so many unnecessary legislation that any chance to improve one’s life goes through so many hurdles to get 1 job done. Screw the politicians and the idiots who put these people in the position to abuse the power that is supposed to help the state, not be a leach.

Was going to say did Reno deal with the homeless like many areas of the midwest do? Just give the homeless a one way bus ticket to San Francisco? I also want to know do they also have a constant barrage of special interest groups (aka homeless advocates) suing the city every time they attempt to clean up an area or move people into housing? One benefit of having an area where it regularly gets deadly cold is that the homeless are more willing to accept housing too, not to mention I got to imagine the cost of land around there is cheaper as well as much more available so also a lot easier to do this sort of thing like building shelters.
My family works with a lot of homeliness here, and no they do not give ticket to other states. If people need help or shelter we help, humans are not trash to us !

I think they sue only if the homeless are harassed and prevented from camping if there's not enough shelter beds. I think the vast majority of homeless people *want* to be housed. Those that don't have probably long since given up, which is sad.

Reno has changed in the last 6 yrs for the better. I'm a frequent Reno visitor from San Francisco and the difference is night and day. But the anchor said something stood out, Reno has the intend for change.

A lot of funds have been going to homelessness in SF. Those funds are just being “mismanaged”. 😒 Hopefully they are getting job placement and training to get their life on track and not just sent to a shelter…
And in march there's another ballot initiative to float another bond issue for more funds. I'm voting no.,

Grew up in SF, living in the peninsula now. My family goes to Reno for so called long weekend vacations a few times a year.
Washoe County is not corrupt like SF County. Huge difference.
Reno looks like a nice place to retire if you don't mind the four seasons of weather. Property tax lower, no state income tax, stricter homeless policies, buffets, gaming, shows, not too far from the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe nearby, a bit of remote work, etc. Probly tougher on crime, too, than in SF. Interesting.
I lived in Reno 2011-2013. Lot's of really nice people, but It had a real down and out vibe. Even in nicer neighborhoods. Maybe things have changed since then.

I Live in Northern Nevada, but I feel your problem is real estate. You value cost of your estate more that its people. Until you value human life and dignity over real estate and valuation assessments, SF will continue to have that problem. Yes, our city/county has been proactive about homelessness. It does take working together to get real results. Don't agree that Virgnia Street was riddled with tents or even other busy streets downtown Reno. Those were more centered towards the east side of the Truckee River, along the freeway, and other areas. We have ambassadors that walk downtown who will help the homeless get resources and off the streets which has been a great service for the homeless, the public and businesses.
I used to live in Reno. I don't think many of the Bay Area commenters here appreciate how bad the homelessness became in Reno (and probably still is - I haven't been back in five years).
Everywhere in downtown Reno, I'd always come across three or four panhandlers. Some people would sexually harass and follow my ex girlfriend. I was robbed and violently beaten once. You couldn't enjoy the waterfront, because the only people out and about were creepy as shit.
I hope this video is actually true, because Downtown Reno was honestly downright scary. I wish the bad Winters scared dangerous street junkies away. It did not.

If it's just a housing issue (it's not, but argument's sake let's say so), why not rezone some of the now-empty office buildings as residential and convert them to very small, individual living spaces. At least that aspect of Reno's solution could be reached I think.

@@catmer9460 Homeless are immune to all non violent laws in california. dozen camps around me are built out of 10 plus shopping carts. that being felony possession of stolen goods, and cops wont even confiscate them. death threats, arson "accidental fires" as the cops call them. pulling knives and machetes' on people, nudity and pissing and pooing out in the open and the cops just say they cant do anything. or the district attorney wont press charges so they wont bother.

What SF has learned about homelessness is that it is a huge revenue stream keeps increasing every year. That much money creates myriad opportunities for corrupton and influence which the SF government has become dependent on and is loathe to reduce or lose. Clearly the homeless spending - $90K or so per person per year - is more than enough to take care of the homeless. But the government continually cries poor, wrings their hands, and raises the budget and taxes.

A blueprint for California, take the abandoned lots and build the centers, end open air illegal substance markets, keep the housing centers safe, track what cities and states the homeless are coming from. Los Angeles just cleaned up a house that had 2 tons of trash, citing it was a health, safety, environmental and fire hazard. One can say that applies to most of our streets in Los Angeles. The funding is there, we need real, consistent action
So this requires a massive push for infrastructure change, because its not just about creating the living space. San Francisco, and Oakland have both have done this heavily creating "liveable" space for the homeless, the issue it policing the space once its been created. By putting a concentrated amount of homeless into a space you create a hotspot for pushers and dealers, and if not heavily monitors even the "security" will get in on and basically becoming tax payer funded security for these dealers.

Yeah I find it hard for California to ever be able to pull something like this off. My guess is in Nevada they probably spent the money they were given on what it was supposed to be spent on and in California the money just gets wasted to companies that are friends of the politicians!

As I recall they tried enforcing a no camp policy in California but a judge said you can't enforce it unless you have enough shelter for everyone? So since they have enough 'beds' they can keep people off the streets then? So is this just a matter of space?
Yes, the ruling is Martin v Boise (2018) and applies to many states (including Nevada) which are part of the Ninth Judicial Circuit (a ruling from a circuit binds all states within the circuit, but not the entire country)
You got it correct, the ruling says you can't enforce camping bans unless you have shelter available for ALL the homeless individuals.
Reno doesn't actually want to offer support, and should not be celebrated for doing so. They're not doing it out of compassion. If they had done it in 2010, 2011 etc when homelessness was spiking from the recession, then you could celebrate that, but now, they're only doing it because their hands are tied. It's cynical.
Previously, Reno handled the homeless by bullying, intimidating, abusing them, and shipping them out of town. Nothing changed wrt to their compassion....it's the legal landscape that changed, with Martin v Boise

Why do they have to follow unreasonable rules, like no guests? Why not make them permanently housed right now by guaranteeing you won't take their homes from them over a two night stay at the hospital or something? Reno's made a good step forward, but are they aware that they're dangling homelessness over the heads of vulnerable people, for very, very stupid reasons?
What I'd like to know is what if you're a married couple? Shelters usually split you up, and who would want to be separated from the person you depend on? Also, what if you're disabled and/or elderly and you can't climb up onto a top bunk? Anyone know anything about this?

The problem is that every time there's a proposal to open a new homeless shelter, or build affordable housing in SF, the locals fight it tooth and nail. They're super in favor of helping the homeless, but just not in their neighborhood! A lot of homeless camp on the Railroad tracks/ right of way. Union Pacific does nothing. It doesn't clean tracks either.- Ed in Reno

Once I saw in TV inteview in skid row: the main reason they do not want to move in is because there is a No drugs no alcohol rule.

San Francisco is like a spoiled rich kid. The more money the kid has, the worse they behave. The kid who has to grow up poor (ie. Washoe County) has to learn to be resourceful and make the best of what they have. Almost always the poor kid succeeds in a meaningful way far more than the rich kid. This is all to say that money is not the problem here. It's simply a matter of will to solve the homeless problem. I'd argue that if SF was less funded, they'd start acting more resourcefully and actual solve the underlying problems instead of throwing money at everything into oblivion
I kind of agree - I feel finger pointing and fake it to make it's run your state a little bit not really knowing how to fix things or get along to make real change just doing what congress our government does argue over things and accomplish nothing and pay real people to solve their problems.
That's interesting perspective.
