- Amy Sherald, the artist behind Michelle Obama's portrait, reflected on what it was like getting the call that the National Portrait Gallery had commissioned her to do the former first lady's official portrait. Sherald also explained her artistic process to bring the portrait to life.
Sherald also painted a portrait of Breonna Taylor to grace the cover of Vanity Fair's September 2020 edition. She use the same style and symbolism that she described on our show in February.

The portrait looks nothing like First Lady Michelle Obama. It looks like something an 8th grader did. The grey skin, the ridiculously long left arm, and the overall lack of resemblance.God bless Mrs. Obama for being gracious. Amy should be ashamed and embarrassed.
I have to agree that it is not a classical portrait, and that the artist was not going for pinpoint likeness. Apparently Mrs.O sat for the portrait and was kept informed so she must have thought the direction was a sound one, but yes I agree I think the portrait is ho hum and that the artist got lucky. As long as she makes the publicity work for her God bless her. I'm not in the national gallery, even as a visitor. Are you?
Michelle’s portrait is a disaster. Even worse is the artist’s explanation for having her complexion greyscale. The first black American First Lady has her skin tone disguised and now looks like an alien. Young black girls won’t say that’s me, they’ll say whose the alien lady.
