Hello, Ian Brewing in monasteries dates back to medieval times when monks brewed beer for their own consumption and for visitors, as water was often unsafe to drink. The Trappist beer tradition began with the Cistercian monks, a branch of the Benedictine order, founded in 1098. The stricter Trappist branch emerged in the 17th century. Monasteries brewed beer to sustain themselves financially, adhering to the Rule of St. Benedict, which emphasizes self-sufficiency. In the 19th century, Trappist brewing as we know it began, particularly with the re-establishment of monasteries in Belgium after the Napoleonic wars. Currently, there are 11 recognized Trappist breweries worldwide that have been certified by the International Trappist Association. They are: Achel (Belgium): Known for its strong ales, particularly the Blond and Bruin beers. Chimay (Belgium): One of the most famous, brewing beers like Chimay Blue, Red, and White. Orval (Belgium): Known for its unique Orval beer with a distinctive hop bitterness and Brettanomyces yeast. Rochefort (Belgium): Produces Rochefort 6, 8, and 10, strong ales with complex flavors. Westmalle (Belgium): The origin of the "Tripel" style, also brewing Dubbel. Westvleteren (Belgium): Famous for its limited availability and the highly regarded Westvleteren 12. Zundert (Netherlands): Produces Zundert 8 and Zundert 10, noted for their spicy flavors. La Trappe (Netherlands): Known for a wide range of beers including Quadrupel and Tripel. Tre Fontane (Italy): The only Trappist brewery in Italy, producing a eucalyptus-infused Tripel. Spencer (U.S.): The first American Trappist brewery, known for its Belgian-style ales. Mont des Cats (France): Though brewed at Chimay, it has its distinct flavor, not certified but often associated. Trappist beers generally fall into the following styles: Patersbier (Single): A lighter ale, often only available within the monastery. Usually low in alcohol and served to monks. Dubbel: A dark ale, usually ranging between 6-8% ABV. Noted for rich, malty sweetness with flavors of dried fruit, caramel, and spices. Tripel: A strong, pale ale with higher alcohol content (typically around 8-10% ABV). Characterized by a dry finish, fruity esters, and spicy phenols from yeast. Quadrupel: The strongest style, with ABV typically over 10%. Full-bodied, dark, and often with flavors of dark fruits, toffee, and spices. Blond Ale: A lighter, golden ale with fruity and spicy notes from the yeast. Specialty Beers: Some breweries produce unique beers that don't fit neatly into traditional styles. Examples include Orval, which uses Brettanomyces yeast, and Tre Fontane's eucalyptus-infused Tripel. Trappist beers have influenced many modern craft brewers. The strong ales, like Tripel and Quadrupel, have become widely imitated outside of monasteries.
I believe Achel lost it's Trappist licence last year and unfortunately Spencer closed in 2022. In the mean time an Austrian (Engelszell) and English (Tynt Meadow) brewery did get a trappist licence in the last 15 years or so, with Tynt Meadow at the time being the 12th officially recognised Trappist brewery. We are down to 10 official ones now though and then Mont des Cats as a semi-official one.
I’m from Westmalle village, the trapist beers are secret recepies from the monks who make it. The company is still owned by the monks and the income let them buy the land and forrests in the village and neighbourhoods to protect them from being destroyed by making houses. So it’s really interesting! You should really try the westmalle tripel trapist, which is even a bit stronger :) delicious
1. Pedro is awesome 2. Zundert is Dutch 3. In Belgium we say "Schol" (in the dutch part), Sante also works and that work also in the french part (shout out to our bothers in Wallonia. 4. You tried the wrong Rochefort, the 10 in my (Belgian) opinion is that it is the best beer in the world, marginally better than a West-Vleeteren or a St Bernardus Abt 12 (which is a good option also, better than the one you featured).
Which part of the north are you from ? I never heard Schol. I'm from Brussels, we say Gezond or Gezondheid. Maybe it's a particularity of Brussels as the "echte brusseleir" talks a mix of dutch and french 🤷♂
In fact Zundert is a Dutch beer from the Dutch town of Zundert, but that's near to the Belgium border. For Americans every European country is probably near Belgium.
The tasting you were all doing, is actually something we Belgians love to do. Sitting with friends and family, eating some salami and cheese or some bread and tasting a new beer or going back to the known beers and enjoy the company around you. Beer tasting is so much fun. Schol!
Hi from belgium, i'm glad you like our beers, there are hundreds of them. Please keep in mind that the taste of a beer actually depends of the temperature and the glass you are using. 😘👍
One thing (as a belgian) to mention. Its best (like a wine) , if you don't use different glasses, best to rinse out the glass with water before you pour in a different beer. The lingering flavor of the previous one will stick to the glass.
Realy nice to see again our beer getting some love. Nice video like always ! Cheers in Wallonia, the french speaking part of Belgium, is like in France "Santé" wishing a "Good Health" type of thing :)
So you have tasted donkey piss. How odd. The quality of a beer isn't in the percentage of alcohol but in the aromas. Or maybe, when it comes to liquor you prefer ethylalcohol to an Islay or an Armagnac.
Sometimes session IPA with a lot of hops and of course below 5% ABV can be OK. I think Ian has to try european strong craft beers. Barley wine, Imperial Stouts etc.
and then theres sahti, "the missing link in brewing history between Mesopotamia and today", according to Michael Jackson (writer), not the famous pop singer.
I am a belgians living in liege French area. So when i was a kids around 15 years old. A group of friend told me Joy you need to help us. We have a problem with one tough guy. I said yes but i was not very secure myself as a teens so we went to the vaudrèe a famous pub in my area. We sat. They teased me a bit with the guy and that i have to be ready for the fight My friend order some drink And the waiter bring a very huge glass almost half of the size of the bistrot table The waiter light the beer and a huge flamme light and dance in the glass. And my friend say while laughing And me so scared. That s the guy we gonna fight ! That vaudree pub is know for having a list of more than 1000 beers Cheers guys Santè
Same, ive been to Ostend twice for 4 days each for work. Not a single bad one out of many!! There is a pub there that has I think it was 2000 (might be less cant remember) beers and most had its own glass haha.
There are things that you have to learn to appreciate, if you don't like it the first time, give it a second or a third chance. Muricans think that mayo on fries is weird, first you don't have serious fries and second you don't have real mayonaise.
9:26 Geniet, maar drink met mate. Enjoy, but drink in moderation. Means we like to drink our 8% beer over 15 or 20 minutes, not chuck it down like a tourist and then drop into a coma. hahaa. In Belgian Limburg we say ' santé ' mostly , also 'schol'. 'proost' is a bit more dutchy but we also say that.
In the early 90s, one of our football/soccer clubs, Germinal Ekeren, played a European game against a Scottish team (Celtic Glasgow). The Scottish fans spent most of the day drinking the dark beers ... which are almost twice as strong as the ones they're used to. It was a warm summer day and many of the Scottish fans didn't even make it to the game. The cops had to go around and pick sleeping Scottish fans off the streets and move them to a safe spot to sleep it off.
Also, an uncle of mine was with NATO troops in Sarajevo. He had the night shift and shared his container 'apartment' with two Americans. One day after there was quite a bit of sniper activity, it bothered him that his bunk mates were so loud while he was trying to compile his report. So, he gave them a couple of Duvels, which look like regular pilsner beer, but are 7.5%. He got to write his report in peace and quiet after that.
As a Belgian, you guys got yourselves some great beers :) the glasses are also much better! the beers you got are beers to be savoured with some cheese and some sausage. Not the type of beer to pour down easily on a hot day. (rochefort -> rock fort -> fortress on a rock)
Im from Belgium 🇧🇪, I like Blue Chimay and Cherry chouffe It's also great for cooking. I miss drinking beer because i always done it, i like the taste and the high you get from heavy beers or just Jupiler by the campfire aswell, Cherry Chouffe is the best you should try those i really recommend it! Very fruity and sweet!
Rochefort 10 is my go to drink. A couple of these down the hatch, and then a 4 hour bike ride through the Melbourne CBD. On a cold winter night, there is nothing better. Salud from 🇦🇺 If you are feeling patriotic, try the Red, White and Blue Chimay beers. The Chimay Grand Reserve is a great sharing bottle 🍺
I never watched any vids on this channel before, but I like the content and the friendly laid back atmosphere. I feel like I'm sat in a pub with my mates, or at a bar with my buddies as you guys across the pond say. Subbed!
The Zundert one is from the Netherlands. It's from an all nun Trappist monastery, one of two Trappist monasteries in the Netherlands (the other one being in Berkel Enschot, all male). Both of these places close to the Belgian border though, and not far from Westmalle. There is different styles of Trappist, most of them being either a Dubbel (sometimes called and 8) - brown colour aprox 6,5%, Tripel (10) - heavy blond 8-9% and Quadruple (12) dark brown 10-11%. You can spend a many evenings exploring Belgian beers
Best Belgian trappists imo ( a Belgian man) - Westvleteren 12 - Rochefort 10 - Chimay Bleu - Orval But in every Belgian town you can find good local beer ...
I'm an American who's lived in Germany for a while, and I have to say that your videos are so refreshing as you go into all these sorts of situations trying European things (snooker, rally cars, beer, etc.) with an open and inquisitive mind, and in this one get your family and friends involved in the fun 😊. Keep up the good work.
I love very strong beers and only drink these. I don't find the lighter ones to be interesting, taste-wise :) My preferred ones : Duvel Citra, Rochefort 10, Chimay bleue, Trappe Quadruple, Triple Karmeliet, Chouffe.
Glad to see you like our stuff :-) Trappist beers are still being brewed by monks, we have 5 abbays that produce them: Westvleteren, Westmalle, Rochefort, Orval and Chimay if I am correct. Zundert is made in the netherlands but has also the trappist logo. These are special beers. Greetings from Belgium
This was fun watching you guys getting happy even though i don't drink,Pedro is such a sweetheart i was a daddy's girl also Danielle i was very lucky to have a beautiful father also.Love from❤🦘
Just a tip when you taste beer fermented on bottle is that there is still some yeast in the bottle so the person pouring the last drink will often have a less clear and more bitter beer
Depends where you live in Belgium. In Limburg (de Maaskant _Meuse Region) many say "gezondheid" or "op uw gezondheid" in either Dutch or the local dialect.
To say "cheers" in Belgium, it sort of depends on where you are in Belgium. Most people in the northern part, where I live, say "Schol". For correct pronunciation (because I know you care): the -ch- bit in that word is pronounced the same as the -J- in Spanish. Got some per-beer-comments for y'all: - Westmalle: one of my personal go-to's in summer. It's fresh and full of character. It's indeed a beer you take your time for, which you can tell without tasting or even reading the label. It comes in a brown bottle (unless it's on tap of course), like most dark beers, which allows you to keep part of the beer in the bottle on the terrace table. The dark bottle will keep a maximum of sunlight away from the beer, which would otherwise make your brown ale go stale much faster. - Zundert is actually a small village on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. I live about 30 miles away from it, but I've honestly never tasted the beer. I probably can't help you with the pronunciation, as the -U- sound in dutch is the same as -Ü- in German, and most native English speakers are notoriously bad at pronouncing it. No offense intended lol - Rochefort: I ike it, but don't drink it often. It's definitely not my favorite, but I can report is goes very well with a cheese-and-salami board on the side -St-Bernardus: I only drank it once when I was taste-testing a lot of beers, so no personal notes, because I simply don't remember enough, sorry LOL I do remember that I liked it, but that's really not interesting enough to mention. "Belgium, you make awesome beers!" - We know, it's the one thing we're definitely proud of! About the lambic, gueuse and other fruit-type beers: their alcoholic contents can vary between 2 and 8%. I suppose they printed it very small, but the producers are legally obligated to print the alcoholic content on the label. Generally they're enjoyed more by women than men. I'm not as well versed on fruity beers as I am with the heavier stuff though. That said, I have tasted some and must say that the brand you got, Lindemans, is imho one of the better commercial ones. Some of the lesser known lambics are still brewed in the exact same way as they were in the 13th century, which in and of itself is a good reason to try them. It's like a fresh glass of history!
Gueuzes aren't necessarily mostly drank by women - which is basically a way of saying they are more to the taste of people who don't drink beer as often. Fruit beers do have that reputation somewhat correctly, but gueuzes and even some krieks (cherry) are actually quite sour. While those are absolutely refreshing and a favourite of mine (the Drie Fonteinen Golden Blend comes to mind), they are definitely a bit of an acquired taste, something for pretty entrenched beer drinkers looking for something new, rather than for someone who just drinks beer every once in a while. (Edit: the last 5-10 years many other fruit beers also got the sour to very sour treatment, there's a lot of interesting tastes there. I myself don't particularly enjoy the sweet ones.) As you stated, some lambics are probably closest to what medieval beer would have been, also slightly sour, probably the taste wasn't as precise as contemporary beers. As far as I know, the oldest recipes still kicking around are from the late 19th century.
Schol from Belgium! 🍻 Just went this weekend to the Sint Bernardus brewery and had the tripel (Bernadetje) as well. Lovely beer. Love your channel and like I said before, welcome to host you guys whenever you want to visit Belgium
There are currently 13 Trappist breweries that are ITA approved to sell beer as an Authentic Trappist Product, the others are called Abbey Beers. Achel used to be the 14. trappist brewery until 2023.
I love how you guys get together to enjoy these beers that are all familiar to me. Also a very supportive camera lady. The enthousiasm you have is so nice to see. Proost!
Belgium is trilingual actually. While Dutch (in the North) and French (in the south) are nearly on par, there's also a small German-speaking community in the easternmost part of the country, bordering the German city of Aachen.
On par ? Abt 60 pct Dutch speaking , 40 pct French and 0,7O (76000) German 🇩🇪 speaking is not on par , but obviously much more languishes are spoken only in Antwerp it’s said 170 ?!
Belgian here, the nice thing about our beer, having craftsmanship for centuries, made it to this point in time where you have multiple Belgian beers for every flavour preference a person can imagine. like 'proost' or 'cheers', we say 'Op de gezondheid' (in English 'For your good health'). Amazing seeing you try these!
Among my favorites belgian beers, if you can get a hold of them there is the GuldenDraak. It's a brown beer and , it's strong in the same wheelhouse as the Rochefort in terms of strength. Also I love the Carolus Classic, it has a really thick consistency almost like milk. It's also a brown beer but has a much smoother softer taste to it compared to most brown beers. And then there is the Deus (god in latin) this one I don't even know if they still make it, it's very expensive compared to other beers and only comes in Champaign size bottles and what's special about this one is somewhere in the process of making it, they actually use some of the technique used to make Champaign to brew it, pretty unique.
Trapist beer you can recognize from the emblem. The requirements to be called a trappist beer are actually very strict. One of the requirements is that they donate part of the income from the beers to charity so in a way you are giving to charity by drinking trapist beer
- The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. - The brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life. - The brewery is not intended to be a profit-making venture. The income covers the living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Whatever remains is donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need. So you are correct, they have to donate their profits to charity. I learned that from you. Thx.
The major requirement is that the beers are produced inside the walls of a monastery and by or supervised by monks. They missed one of the best Trappist beers: Orval. As well as the strongest: Westvleteren 12%. And of course, Zundert is not Belgian, but from Holland.
Well done guys, Trappist beer, careful now, these are strong, I hope you've eaten before consuming so many, check out if these are double tap or triple tap, the darker once are generally the stronger ones, my father is from Belgium, I sort of grew up on this stuff
Dubbel = double, tripel= well triple:) When drinking full glasses or bottles, do take your time yes. I am from the Netherlands but Belgian beer rules all. Try bokbier some time? Bok=male goat;) With beers like these the taste and thickness?? comes with the way it is fermented??? Some are from the top, some are from the bottom up. Crafted is a proper way to describe these brewes:)
My favourite Belgian beer is Duvel Tripel Citra (9.2%) but my favourite beer hands down from anywhere in the world is Kanon from Grolsch (11.6%). Nothing comes close to that. I hammered it for 20 years when I lived in the Netherlands (sometimes 10 bottles or 6 cans in an evening). I never once had a hangover from it, and the buzz from it is like no other!
@6:25 The Zundert beer, you almost pronounce it perfect the first try. It is pronounced like 'sun' and 'dirt', replace the s in sun for a z and there you go!
Rochefort is (in my family at least) a cheese/cooking beer. Its got a super strong flavour and goes really well with our cheeses and in our stews. :) Glad you guys liked our beers! We've got plenty more to try!
Each Belgian beer has its own glass. Some are really weird and need a separate stand to hold the glass. There are some great and unusual tastes as well.
proost is dutch, salute is espanol. and schol is belgian! also those glasses look better then those buckets i saw in another video from you. my guy is learning! 🙌 like we Belgians say, Ik hoop dat het gesmaakt heeft! schol!
Trappist beer are in 3 (much more complicated but in general) brews divided, Triple the Blond light, Double the dark brown more heavy and the quadruple less populair. It's always easy to remember, a Trappist Double has the D of Dark or Donker in Belgium, so if you buy Double you get a dark heavy beer and with a triple a more light blond beer
@@cellevangiel5973, yes dear, we definitely also use "santé" both in parts of Flanders and in Wallonie. I think "schol" is only used around Antwerp, maybe also Limburg? Don't go telling someone who is clearly also from Belgium that they are wrong just because it's not the word you use in your dialect/region. In Flanders we also use "gezondheid" or "tchin-tchin" although I've only heard those from my grandparents and their generation (generation born in the 1920's). In Wallonie it's "santé", "à la vôtre", "à vôtre santé", "à la tienne", "tchin-tchin", "à la nôtre".

Hi gang. It’s a pity you don’t have Welsh beer, our equivalent is “Iechyd Dda” difficult to pronounce but iechyd is “yekid tha” pronouncing the k as ch in chap and the dd as th in the. Literally means iechyd, health with dda meaning good. Iechyd dda means good health, have a good night, get the Tylenol in! I worked in The Netherlands for nearly 5 years and we used to get Belgium Trappist beer in most bars. In the better bars you get a matching glass, some are incredible. Kwak comes in a chemistry type glass with a wooden flask holder, the there is also the beer Delirium Tremens in a glass with Pink Elephants, the DT’s is alcoholism. In the Dutch & Belgian bars you get much more froth/head. If there's too much they have a plastic strip to level the froth off. in the UK the froth counts as part of a pint, the legal measure. Too much froth, less beer in the UK.
Tip! Don't poor the whole bottle at once! Keep 2 cm in. Drink first and add the last 2 cm when your glass is half full. You get 2 different tastings. In the last 2 cm is the hop residue that adds an extra taste to the beer. Another tip, use red wine glass if you don't have trappist glasses. Enjoy the beer! Greetings from Belgium!
glasses need to be wet for sure. Ideally also in its proper glass, they all the same shape more or less. Chimay Bleue is my fav trappist. Other Belgian favs are Brugge Trippel and similar Leffe Trippel.
Dutchman here! Fun to see you love those Belgian beers, I love them to. We can purchase them at local supermarkets. Make sure you check out Brugse zot, Afflichem and MAREDSOUS BEERS. You'll love those as well. The Afflichem double is my favourite.
As a belgian I would like to share my very own personal list. 1) tripel karmeliet 2) tripel d’anvers (anvers is french for antwerp the city) 3) paix dieu 4) bootjes bier The so called best beer in the world is called Westvleteren, no export, not even sold in supermarkets in belgium, you have to drive to the abby of westvleteren and you have to buy it there (max 1 crate which is 24 pints). It is so exclusive that they even scan your license plate for any wrong doing (black list) or buying too often.
Heb vorige zomer nog ne Westvleteren gedronken en het is idd wel een heel lekker biertje. Persoonlijk blijf ik bij de eerste 2 van je lijst...een karmelietje smaakt altijd😋👌🏻
One advice: taste it at the temperature it needs. A good rule of thumb is: alcohol percentage = drinking temperature. But some bottles state the drinking temperature. Also the right glass shape for the beers. Also some beers even taste better a moment after pooring.
Belgium has over 800 Different brands of Beer. Most Hand craftet by Monks too. So yeah you Started something of. Next up the triple beers. Up to 12‰. And try something to neutralize your Taste. because some beers don't mix up. Espacially those beers. You even got Places where you get a certain Beer offered to Different dishes.
As a Belgian it was too funny watching you going "wow" for a 8% beer, I'd even say anything below 7% would be considered a light beer for many of us. Beer is really our craft, glad you enjoyed it.
I need to try these. Your video randomly popped after seeing your other belgian triple beers a couple of months ago. I've tried the zundert before it wasn't really my favorite
Lindemans is a range of Belgian fruit beers based on Lambic. The beer is brewed at the Lindemans Brewery in Vlezenbeek. Hello, Ian
Brewing in monasteries dates back to medieval times when monks brewed beer for their own consumption and for visitors, as water was often unsafe to drink.
They are:
Achel (Belgium): Known for its strong ales, particularly the Blond and Bruin beers.
Trappist beers generally fall into the following styles:
Patersbier (Single): A lighter ale, often only available within the monastery.
Leçon d'histoire :) c'était instructif , Merci
Wow. Great Information. Well researched. Thanks for passing on this knowledge

Exactly what i was thinking. The Rochefort 8 is shitty compared to the 10.
Which part of the north are you from ? I never heard Schol. I'm from Brussels, we say Gezond or Gezondheid. Maybe it's a particularity of Brussels as the "echte brusseleir" talks a mix of dutch and french 🤷♂
Belgium is trilingual actually. In some parts they speak French, in others Dutch and there's also a German- speaking community in Flandern/ Vlanderen.
St. Bernardus Abt 12 is one of my favs.
In fact Zundert is a Dutch beer from the Dutch town of Zundert, but that's near to the Belgium border. For Americans every European country is probably near Belgium.

Hi from belgium, i'm glad you like our beers, there are hundreds of them.
Please keep in mind that the taste of a beer actually depends of the temperature and the glass you are using.

It makes me sad when I see guys holding those beers on ice and tasting not from proper glass....I think that's why the gave low rating to Rochforte 8
@@Viperl-er2bfand maybe if they wouldnt drink them in one go they would get much more out of the beer
Indeed. Your rochefort needs to be warmer than a pils. keep it in a cool environment but not in the fridge.

This was very amusing to watch. Glad you like most of them.
Greetings from Belgium!
For beer, the Belgians are the best. It's not up for debate.
I am French.
beer below 5° is donkey piss.
I'm only here to say that I wholeheartedly agree, as a fellow French.
Belgian beer rules all.

Joy you need to help us. We have a problem with one tough guy. I said yes but i was not very secure myself as a teens so we went to the vaudrèe a famous pub in my area. We sat. They teased me a bit with the guy and that i have to be ready for the fight
My friend order some drink
And the waiter bring a very huge glass almost half of the size of the bistrot table
The waiter light the beer and a huge flamme light and dance in the glass.

And me so scared.

When drinking (beers) with different alcohol percentages, it is recommended to start with the lowest, finishing with the strongest.

Whether it is sante or plaice, after a few hours half of it ends up in the toilet 😉

Their mayo is not the same as our mayo though, it's more of a dressing.
Always fun to see the tourists here downing some Duvels or other heavy beers and saying they can take it. Then they get hit with the hammer.

But they drink it way too cold. At that freezing temperature 90% of the taste is lost.

The guys really stepped up their pour this time. Nice work!
Best Belgian trappists imo ( a Belgian man)

Glad to see you like our stuff :-) Trappist beers are still being brewed by monks, we have 5 abbays that produce them: Westvleteren, Westmalle, Rochefort, Orval and Chimay if I am correct. Just a tip when you taste beer fermented on bottle is that there is still some yeast in the bottle so the person pouring the last drink will often have a less clear and more bitter beer
I am from Belgium. In Belgium we don't say "Proost". That's from thé Netherlands. In Belgium we say "Schol" or "Santé" !
Depends where you live in Belgium. In Limburg (de Maaskant _Meuse Region) many say "gezondheid" or "op uw gezondheid" in either Dutch or the local dialect.
I'm currently visiting Belgium and intend to try as many of these as I can.
To say "cheers" in Belgium, it sort of depends on where you are in Belgium. Most people in the northern part, where I live, say "Schol". For correct pronunciation (because I know you care): the -ch- bit in that word is pronounced the same as the -J- in Spanish.
Got some per-beer-comments for y'all:
- Westmalle: one of my personal go-to's in summer.
No offense intended lol
- Rochefort: I ike it, but don't drink it often. It's definitely not my favorite, but I can report is goes very well with a cheese-and-salami board on the side
-St-Bernardus: I only drank it once when I was taste-testing a lot of beers, so no personal notes, because I simply don't remember enough, sorry LOL
I do remember that I liked it, but that's really not interesting enough to mention.
"Belgium, you make awesome beers!"
- We know, it's the one thing we're definitely proud of!
Most people just say santé
I myself don't particularly enjoy the sweet ones.)
As you stated, some lambics are probably closest to what medieval beer would have been, also slightly sour, probably the taste wasn't as precise as contemporary beers. As far as I know, the oldest recipes still kicking around are from the late 19th century.
Schol from Belgium! 🍻

Amazing seeing you try these!
those beers that ladies drank (Lindemans) are 2.5% alcohol - peach and raspberry ones , and 3.5% - apple and cherry
Lindemans Pêche is a young lambic enriched with peach juice - 2.5% ABV
"Lambic" means natural fermentation without addition of (beer) yeasts.
"Zundert" ia s dutch town on the border with belgium
I've been donating to charity several times a week for many years then it seems
Rochefort 8 is my favorite in Belgium. When we are drinking a Trappist, we often eat squares of cheese with
