  • Viking Rhine River Cruise on the Viking Kara, things I didn't know until after I took a river cruise and ways to save some money for the Optional 2 night Lucerne extension in Basel. ( I did say three night in the video but the 3 night extension is to Lake Cuomo)
    This will be part 1 of 2 for this cruise, it is an 8 day 7 night cruise and there are ways to save money, keep in mind that these cruises book around 1 year out, so waiting for the air sale is the biggest way to save money.
    These longships carry around 190 passengers and has open dining in the evening so you could meet new travelers every night. Be sure to check out the Viking Daily newsletter to plan your day and your My Viking Journey after you book online.
    Seeing so many UNESCO World Heritage sites in one trip is hard to do but Viking makes it easy, prepare to be amazed by the history and architecture.

    Just did Christmas market cruise of the Rhine. Food is exceptional.
    3 tips, be prepared for 'forced interaction', luckily we met good people and stuck with them.
    If you have heated floors you can wash clothes in sink and dry on floor overnight.
    If breakfast is included (or not) make rolls from the cold meat and cheese platters to stick in your pocket for later.👍 Might eat out locally, might not, depends on your day.

    Stacking happens rarely. Veranda is the way to go.

      Agreed. Plus when you are moving night or day, having the veranda allows you an early morning coffee at sunup or a night cap after dinner.

    Nicely done! I noticed leaves on trees turning fall colors. What week of what month did you take this trip?

    About the verandas, you make it sound like the ship stays stack-docked the whole time.

    • @travelwithtiffa7626
      @travelwithtiffa7626  3 роки тому +1

      No not at all, but when you depart they are stacked and when you port in smaller areas they will also stack. So really when you would want to use them the ships can be stacked. The verandas do have a few more sq feet in the cabin and a chair. The upper deck is so much nicer to use, booking a French balcony can be a way to save money

      We took to the Rhine cruise and we were stacked more often than not. There's nothing like paying a premium so you can look straight into the state room of another ship tied up 3 feet from you.
      This is only one of a myriad of things they don't tell you before you book.

    Get an explorer suite and don't have the problem when docking.

    We have prepaid cruise staff tips but what did you do about cash for tour operator, bus driver tips and purchases from smaller vendors? Did you buy euros or use U.S. dollars?

    FYI, docking side by side is called rafting, not stacking.

    May I ask what type of restrictions were required due to COVID-19 both on and off the ship if you don't mind sharing?

      Viking has not sailed since the Pandemic started, my cruise was pre-covid. But Viking will be the leader in sailing policies, the new update on Viking was on Feb 17, 2021 and says they are set to sail on May 31, 2021. Viking has set a Healthy & Safety Program in place:

      I paid my booking for June yesterday, they haven't decided when they're starting cruising or what their rules on vaccination are going to be. Their rep said they'll have more info in the next couple of weeks. Interestingly, they sent an email survey out on this issue today.

      My trip was a few years ago, but Viking has been a leader with their health & safety program. This is a beautiful journey, try to stay up late one night to see the transition thru the locks.
      Take some binoculars if you have a set, there is so much to see, many of the castles and wineries are high.
      Have an amazing journey!

    You didn’t mention about Food on Viking Cruise which count as one of the enjoyment of the Cruise. Did you enjoy the Viking Cruise food they served to your expectations? It was an agony to eat food they serve on Cruise ship.!!!

      The food is very good and changes with the countries you are in, I was willing to try everything but sauerkraut, :) so in Germany I just tried everything else and had plenty of wine haha. Dessert is always amazing. I guess it depends on what cruise ship you have been on, this is definitely smaller and less rushed.

    • @dougmacmillan1712
      @dougmacmillan1712 3 роки тому

      We found the food to be acceptable, but nothing to write home about. I don't know how you would calculate what portion of the very expensive cost of the cruise goes to food, but I'm thinking you're paying a premium price for an average meal. Also, the kitchen is tiny and everyone eats dinner at the same time. Your plate may be room temperature by the time it arrives.
