Nah, he was only a maniac 4:23 who'd do anything to achieve his own goals and he'd do anything for survival and part of that it was being with Lori. Only because he was right about what happened to Carol's daughter and he insisted about it through the season, people treats him as "the one who was right", his character had to take that role, doing that aligned with his own interests, too. Alone he'd have been a crazy ruthless survivor, in a group, he was a danger.
They didn't think they needed it cause the farm had wells, and they were basically only thinking about finding Sofia. But if they had more screen time, they each should have put a bottle in their vehicle. But most likely didn't have enough screen time. That's all

No Daryl was the most able person. He was abused his whole life, but also learned how to survive on his own. Lori being so two faced is why I hated her as a character. She's what drove Shane insane & drove a wedge between him & Rick. Since leaving the farm he functions as like a morally neutral person but in the war he joins ricks group because he wants to protect Judith, who he believes to be his biological daughter but after disputes with Rick it leads to the same result; Rick having to stab him over leadership disputes regarding dealing with the saviors
At the end of the day Shane was the one who could drop his emotions to protect what was right in front of him. He wasn’t a bad guy he was a SURVIVOR Lemme tell u somethin’

The show eventually shows that he is right but having Rick become Shane when they reach Alexandria

The thing about Shane is every crazy act he ever made he always had serious remorse on his face afterwards or just before doing it but he knew it had to be done and after making so many tough decisons it really set him apart from everyone. Shane also wanted Rick to kill him at the end thats why he never shot at Rick and asked him to "raise your gun" he wanted to bring out the guy he knew he needed to be. Shane didnt wanna be apart of the group anymore but even tho he loves lori he cares about rick like a brother still and gave the last bit of his life to make Rick start to crack open his potential to survive in the new world.
I feel like Shane truly did care about everyone, but it was the combination of Lori getting into Rick's head plus none of them handling this situation like adults plus Lori screwing with Shane's emotions definitely sent him over the edge until he had no humanity or self control left.

So Shane did kill Otis but he didn't do it out pure selfishness considering he offered to be left behind and let Otis live. The main problem with Shane was that he adapted to the new world way too quickly. Instead of giving people hope of finding a little girl, he’d just assume she’s dead and expect everyone to get over it immediately. That’s not how humans work and even if the dead were to walk the earth, the living would continue to grieve.
Shane was a great character but a very loose cannon. The barn scene when he goes off on one and finds the girl as a walker was a shocker. Even my jaw dropped.

14:34 This interaction with Carl speaks alot why Shane couldn't let go of the group, he was too attached with Lori and Carl, he had the feeling he was their protector, and to a man that means everything, and seeing Carl step up for what he thinks it's right really made him proud. Good scene.
And also keeping Carl on the right path. Shane was focused on survival... but he wasn't a bad guy. He knew Rick's heart was in the right place but he began to border on delusion. Their wanting to see Sophia alive was just their want. He knew Sophia was bit and it was only a matter of time.

Since leaving the farm he functions as like a morally neutral person but in the war he joins ricks group because he wants to protect Judith, who he believes to be his biological daughter but after disputes with Rick it leads to the same result; Rick having to stab him over leadership disputes regarding dealing with the saviors

Shane wasn’t a villain. He’s exactly the type of man that is needed to survive in the immediate apocalypse. All he wanted was family loyalty and those he loved to be safe. He was willing to do things that are totally reprehensible in our world but in a world overrun with flesh eating freaks he is doing what has to be done. Protecting his tribe at all costs. The show eventually shows that he is right but having Rick become Shane when they reach Alexandria

The thing about Shane is every crazy act he ever made he always had serious remorse on his face afterwards or just before doing it but he knew it had to be done and after making so many tough decisons it really set him apart from everyone.
Shane also wanted Rick to kill him at the end thats why he never shot at Rick and asked him to "raise your gun" he wanted to bring out the guy he knew he needed to be. Shane didnt wanna be apart of the group anymore but even tho he loves lori he cares about rick like a brother still and gave the last bit of his life to make Rick start to crack open his potential to survive in the new world.

In all honesty, I think Shane was just confused but determined in keep his people safe. Lori f**ked with his mind by constantly giving him mixed signals (e.g., pushing him away and then warming up to him) that he began to see Rick as an obstacle between himself and Lori & Carl

Killing Otis changed him, and he felt the need to think what he did was necessary and continues to believe so. Lied to others to prevent them seeing him as a monster.

Also yes, in terms of survival he made the right call. Problem was he evolved too quickly, and he intends to harm others if means for his plans to be in motion. He also almost attempting to kill Rick, which he had no reason to do that. Dale saw it.

So Shane did kill Otis but he didn't do it out pure selfishness considering he offered to be left behind and let Otis live. But him being involved with Lori has no excuse and that was his biggest problem.

The main problem with Shane was that he adapted to the new world way too quickly. Instead of giving people hope of finding a little girl, he’d just assume she’s dead and expect everyone to get over it immediately. That’s not how humans work and even if the dead were to walk the earth, the living would continue to grieve.
