  • Diane Carlson Evans was born and raised on a dairy farm in rural Minnesota and graduated from nursing school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Upon graduation, she joined the Army Nurse Corps and served in Vietnam from 1968-1969. She served in the burn unit of the 36th Evacuation Hospital in Vung Tau and at Pleiku in the 71st Evacuation Hospital. Including her one year in Vietnam, she completed six years in the Army Nurse Corps.
Evans envisioned the idea for a memorial to honor over 265,000 women who served during the Vietnam war. A former Army combat nurse and Vietnam veteran she led the ten-year struggle to complete the circle of healing with the placement of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. Although the eloquent wall of names at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. lists the names of eight women nurses who died in Vietnam, Evans felt deeply that the memorial, with its statue of three fighting men, did not acknowledge adequately the women. In her words, “…women are also soldiers. Women also need to heal. Their service is worthy of honor and recognition.” That recognition took place on November 11, 1993 with the dedication of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial.

10 years US Army Special Forces medevac veteran that did 2 tours in Vietnam. There aren't enough words to honor the Vietnam combat nurses that volunteered to go to Vietnam.

Thank you, Diane, and your fellow medical specialists. I was in the Signal Corps right next door to your 71st Evac Hospital, there at Tropo Hill, north of Pleiku City. That was from Aug68 to Dec68. While I was there my cousin was working with the 4th Infantry Engineers on the roads and bridges between KonTum and DakTo. He and I were both from Harrisburg, PA, and we are the same age. While I was up there my cousin was injured when his unit was attacked by the NVA near DakTo. He got shrapnel on his back and backside. He was taken to your hospital on a Dust-Off Huey. While your unit treated him for the next 8 or 9 days I visited him to make sure he was on the mend. Eventually, he was well enough to return to duty and we both made our way home, got married, and had families. He and I still get together during family events, and he thanks your Evac Hospital for saving his life from all the bleeding. Again, thank you for being there to take care of the men and women of our Armed Forces.

Such admiration for the women who were in Vietnam. America should be so ashamed of themselves for protesting against their men being in Vietnam. They did not want to be there
    You women are heroes
