  • Are you too heavy for your horse? Here's an update of a visit where a young race bread horse would sit down down with its rider on board when pushed! He would also refuse to load and this left this owner deflated and close to giving up horse's all together! Charlotte persuaded her dad to go and see if he could help her!

Carly WAS to heavy for her horse’s frame but now she has the correct mindset to make riding pleasurable for the horse as well, well done for losing the weight

Such a light framed horse to carry so much weight AND to be frightened of the uncertain footing - sitting down was his only logical option! Clever boy 🤔

Thoroughbreds need the lightest and most athletic of riders - as do Arabs. It's sad seeing a horse even falling sideways under the heaviness of a rider.

I think the horse would prefer she didn't climb on its back, overweight, or not. There is a reason horses are not born with bridles and saddles.

@ottb.harvey Making such an obvious statement hardly requires education. Plenty of examples of horses and riders on TV. The size of the horse usually reflects the purpose, and the riders' weight is appropriate to the horse and the purpose.

I'm so glad you revise this video because there are so many people out there that are riding horses that are too small for them. I used to be one of those people I was 300 lb I'm down to 165 and I'm not embarrassed to say I was one of those people congratulations to her

Important subject. It angers me so much that on social media, I see sooo many comments about the weight of women equestrians....but I can't recall ever seeing a comment about a heavy man. I'm from the American West, and can tell you that every parade we have here, has some truly weighty MEN in the saddle. But, it's the women who are excoriated mercilessly. As you say, all riders should work on their fitness for riding.

    • @shadow14805
      @shadow14805 10 місяців тому +3

Yes! Precisely. I see this double standard often on social media. Another double standard i've seen in my personal life is muscly people who are too heavy for their horse, getting critiscied much less than people with a lot of fat. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat, so a good-looking muscly person can actually do considerably more damage in comparison to a fat person, and weigh much heavier, but people are more likely to let it slide because they physically looking good. Being able to ride a horse isn't just about how much fat you have, it's also taking into consideration your height and muscle mass, the last two of which people are more likley to disregard, unless it somehow contributes to someone looking less conventionally attractive.

@@shadow14805 and @ielektra: For the love of Pete, (Yes, that's a man's name), please stop it already.
Who cares what sex the rider is???
I can pretty much guarantee that the horse doesn't give two craps about who is on their back apart from the weight, relationship with and experience of their rider. Hijacking this video in order to further a social justice agenda only removes the focus from the intended lesson the owner and Steve are trying to help us all see here. Making a horse's life better, not worse.
Grow up and get a better helmet if this video "triggers" the issues you have with your scales.

    • @shadow14805

@@hazeltyler89 "Who cares what sex the rider is???"
Tell that to the people me and ielektra are critiscising, lol. That's literally our whole point. The only person getting unnecessarily triggered here is you. What's your problem? Do you _not_ want people to be fairly critisised? Do you genuinely think good-looking heavy people should be given more leeway on hurting a horse's back? We're not saying anything controversial. Get a grip, dude.
Your obsession against anything "social justice" is clearly rotting your brain to the point that you'll see someone say some pretty basic shit and get upset. It's the equivalent of someone getting so obsessed against anything politically opposing that they start accusing everyone of being communist. Put down the phone and take a breather. No one is saying anything extreme here. If you can't handle people talking about the reality of a situation, you can't handle reality.
Scroll past if you don't agree with what's being said or create a genuine counter argument, don't just throw a hissy fit. It's unproductive and gives you a bad look.

You might want to reread the comments you are criticizing. The point they were making is that it doesn't matter to the horse what gender the rider is, weight is weight, but that people tend to criticize heavy female riders and rarely criticize equally heavy male riders. I've seen that happen.

This type of message needs to be addressed much more often. With humans beings heavier than they have ever been in recorded history, I cringe to see the size disparity between horse and rider at times. The concern for their tendons, ligaments, growth plates seem to be a thing of the past. How can you say that you love horses if you don’t consider 😊the impact you have on them when you are overweight.

I come from a holistic view regarding health and healing---which includes the mental and emotional aspects, perhaps spiritual as well. Very sensitive people often pack on extra pounds (operating from insecurity as well) as a literal form of protection they put between themselves and the world. That's why "losing weight" is difficult. Yes, it does take discipline to change eating patterns and lifestyle habits---but that's only a portion of the whole picture. As pounds are shed, emotions are exposed. You have to have the courage and stamina to face what comes up and deal with it head on. This is HARD. Whether the issues involve fears, anger, betrayal, you name it. So---here is a journey of both Horse and Rider learning confidence and being brave. Well Done!

Congratulations Carli!! Your horse will appreciate it in the long run as will your back, knees and ankles, which feels that weight so much. I'm so proud of you!! And I agree with you Steve. 20% is what I shoot for. If I have a larger student, I always make sure that they are on a horse that can handle their weight. In our school, we have 4 draft crosses, that, depending who's riding, will either be a babysitter for a beginner, or a goer for anyone intermediate and above. They just seem to sense what kind of rider they have on their back. I've used them in flat work and in jumping lessons. Well done Carley, Seeing your last video i knew you were a capable of being balanced, and having the strength in the necessary riding muscles to do what you were doing on your horse, his body was adequately muscled on his topline to support you.The 20% rule is a good rule for pure weight on a horses back, but if the rider is unbalanced and rides heavy due to lack of knowledge and how to ride and so lacks the necessary muscles to be balanced it can and does do pain and physical damage to the horse.Riding horses is an athletic pursuit, and when you loose weight everything is easier in life, believe me i know.X

How could she honestly look at photos and videos of herself on him and not see she was too heavy for him 🤦‍♀️ And how many people saw it and said nothing because they didn't want to offend her? People are so quick to point out animal abuse but when they see a fat person on a horse that can't carry them it's tumbleweeds 🙄

As a 15 y/o girl with my first horse, she was about 975 pounds and I about 100 at 4-11 1/2. I was totally inexperienced but my mare had been owned by a sheriff's deputy who was part of the mounted unit, so she knew what I didn't. Years later, we acquired a trio of related horses that were cross-bred of registered stock for a youth riding camp that closed due to owner's age and health. Those wonderfully trained horses were just about perfect but I had gained about 40 pounds and not ridden for 25 years. The weight was OK for the horses but I was horrified of how differently I felt in the saddle, so much less secure in my balance and seat in general. I'm sure this dedicated woman is enjoying her riding adventures immeasurably more now--as is her horse. :-)

I agree with the comments about her weight, but one thing that impressed me was how calm she was when her horse sat down and refused to go through the water. She never gave up on him and let him work through it in a very calm manner.

Thank you for sharing Carly's story and addressing this issue head on. Carly was already an excellent rider with a nice secure seat. I bet her horse loves to go out with her now! I admire her hard work and am so happy for her!

I rode with a girl who was so heavy her horse began to drag its back feet. I asked her to trade with me to help get this poor horse back to the trailer as on a trail ride. It made me so effing mad and she didn’t even care. People are so stupid. This poor animal had a ruptured disc.
If you are heavy, please only ride draft crosses or draft breeds.

Not even those breeds. Horses backs are incredibly delicate. I agist at a riding school and the poor heavy breeds get all the overweight people on them. Their backs are destroyed and they’re still forced to work. 😢

I know I'll make myself unpopular here, but isn't it common sense, that a certain weight is just too much for a horse? Just imagine you can barely carry a 40 pound bag on your shoulders and someone gives you a 100 pound bag to lift. In my opinion its's animal abuse. Steve is a gentleman, always polite, but I say straight forward, please do some calculations before mounting a horse! Seeing those poor horses struggling with their riders weight is heartbraking!

Congrats to the young lady for making great advances in her health and confidence. It is a growing struggle I see in the house world and increasingly heavy people.

good job Carly. I agree with you. I am over weight myself and I would never put a horse who could not carry me through that. I love horses to much. Not only that I love animals period and their well being is always on my mind.
