Great review Noel. Lots of great information in there. 👌 I like how you broke down the fins for the board and still touched on the design elements of the board. I personally rode the 5’5 and had the exact same experience. Tons of hold and grip from that double diamond tail... and lots of speed with that wide tail. (Maybe more hold than the sci-fi bat tail). I also found the tomo fins to be a bit stiff. If you get a chance to ride the powerdrive fins (Krypt fins) they go insane in that board. Great review Noel. Stoked. 🤙⚡️⚡️

It looks like it tends to surf pretty low. It goes fast down the face of the wave and yet still has good drive. It looked pretty stiff until you showed your third session. That mix and match with the fins was great! Thanks for the awesome review Noel!

Cheers Noel ! Ripping Mate !! . Just a side note: The Tomo Quads fins are One size fits all, making them a bit on the larger side for the 5'4 EL Tomo. ideally suited to a surfer 170- 200lb (roughly 78-95kg) or ET model 5'6-6'4. As a rule of thumb the QISC hull design gives you more grip than traditional bottoms and allows you to rides slightly smaller fin templates. Shaka :)

Thanks for another great review Noel. The fact that you take the time and effort to try different fin set ups and explain them is unlike anyone else. Your explanation of fins and how they work have opened the door and brought new life to boards that I thought were just not that fun anymore. Keep ripping and putting out these fantastic and informative videos. One more thing, you state that the Fishbeard and El Tomo have the same HP vibe but what do you feel is the main difference?

Delmo 1 The FB and El Tomo Fish surf Nothing alike. What I was saying about them both is their ability to shred the pocket due to their sleek performance outline. The nose on both models are pretty pulled in for a fish design and I love that. The nose doesn’t catch like a fish with more of a classic look. I could surf fish type boards like the FB and El Tomo Fish as my daily drivers. These two boards are epic and I’m sad the board reviews are over. I will be doing fin testing with the FB, El Tomo Fish, along with the Black Baron, Seaside, Akila Aipa Fish In the near future.

Hey Noel , thanks for the vids , they're really great and comprehensive for the board carcteristics !!
I posted this commentary on your puddle jumper hp review :
I was wondering if you could help me decide. I currently ride an All merrick sampler 29,7 L in 5'9 in french west coast waves, all seasons exept in cold winter days (mid novembre - march)
I sometimes get on top of the waves trouble getting that paddle speed and was looking at the puddle jumper hp or the El TOMO fish.
Intermediate surfer , 180cm tall and about 75kg.
Im looking at the 5'8 for both boards (33L for the PJHP and 31,9L for the TOMO)...
Wich board and what size would you recommend?

I've had one for a couple of months now and love it. But I'm not convinced on quad yet, maybe it's just me, but I prefer it as twin with a tiny knubster trailer on my heelside back quad. For the twins I've used the Album NVS and the C-drive NVS. Quads for me felt more tracky and sticky and I'm sure it's mostly my foot positioning but with the twin plus asymmetrical knub on my heelside I feel fast but still in control. Do you have thoughts on that @surfnshow ? What's the advantage of quad over what I'm describing?
Sizing is a little difficult and I never thought I'd get to the point where I could feel a difference in 1.5 litres but I get it now. I went oversized vs undersized mainly because a lot of my waves don't have a ton of power on average days and I have to battle longboarders and midlenghts out the back for the nicer sets. I got mine 5'7" and I'm 5'10" 155 lbs, intermediate. I could have gone 5'6" and sacrificed a little paddle power for maneuverability but learning to get my back foot farther back is a good habit. The glide through flats and getting in early from out the back maximizes my wave count. I've ridden it waist to a few feet overhead and felt great.

Excellent post... this will help many in our community if they take the time to read through these valuable comments. The Twin set up your running sounds fun and interesting. The Nubster on your heel side makes sense as it would slide out a bit without it. On another note... it's good to hear that the El Tomo Fish is not too loose as a Twin Fin. I also think because you went with a little more foam and sized up that it works as a Twin Fin (Extra Rail Line for hold). It will keep it loose, responsive, and the little Nubster stabilizes it so you can push through your backside turns. I am keeping my El Tomo Fish and I will continue to run different fin set ups when I have time. Cheers

Hearing good things, I usually run futures f8 or mayhems lrg but used to run FCS H2 on my OG Rocket and thinking about going back to fcs so I can try a Rocket Redux with H2. Only thing is the H4 area is considerably less that the fins I've been riding and my rocket dimms have grown several litres since then as well. I wonder if the design of the H4 will offer extra hold to compensate for the lesser fin area I am used to. I know you ride large fins and can't wait for your review, love em all. Thanks N!!

The El Fish is a bit easier to surf and it will crave good and still get into the lip pretty quick. If your beach break wave gets really hollow then the Fish will struggle a little. The Fishbeard and El Tomo Fish have a similar High Performance vibe in the outline.... more in the nose of the board. (however they do NOT surf alike) They are both free from catching through quick transitions and big carves compared to the Seaside. The Seaside is fast and quick in tight transitions but the nose will catch a bit if your not surfing it off the tail hard. The Seaside is faster than both the FB and El Tomo Fish down the line but no match for FB and E. T. Fish in the pocket for top to bottom surfing.

I keep finding reviews how this "fish" has such great hold and actually performs better in bigger surf. Given the amount of hold, and the fact that it's a dedicated quad, how do you think it'd go for riding barrels? Seems like a good combo.

Great review, ripping surfing Noel!! So tempted to pull the trigger on the Tomo Fish based on this review...5-9, 165lbs Intermediate that surfs mostly lackluster beachbreaks - but sounds like this board could handle or step up on overhead days as well - which is a huge plus for that rare occasion when surf gets good near me and already a Quad fan - but couldn't imagine surfing this board at 5-5...what would be a good size board based on specs if I'm not looking for the tomo fish to be a groverler?

Looked a bit like your in slo mo to me. Maybe that shows how much time this boards gives you or maybe thats the release it was missing and making you look slower in the turn?. It looks like a fun board, Id defo give it a go but at $AUD1400 its an expensive try out. I have Tomo’s hydro short round and its an amazingly lite construct and a great shape, I love it apart for the 4 or dents, or chips in my rails. Where these chips come from I dunno but Ive been surfing for 30yrs or more and never seen a board chip away with such ease. Tomo needs to look into the integrity of his eco surfboard construct, I’m happy to pay the extra 30% $$ per board for dynamic & innovative shapers like Tomo but cant help feel ripped off by the lack of integrity in the construct.

Hi Noel, amazed about the review. Some time ago you recommended me to buy the seaside at my usual volume( 31,5L), and i can tell that im totally addicted to that thing even though im 6.2 tall.
But sometimes when im in well overhead surf with the seaside i think i should have something bigger( i still surf it in 6ft. Decently), but then i think about an HP board, which for me would be around a 6,1 or so and the idea of jumping from a 5.5 seaside to that, doesnt attract me at all. So now after listening carefully to your review i understood that you can surf some Performing surf in bigger surf.
Would you recommend me this board as complementary to the seaside for bigger surf?? If so, you still would go for the same volume as the seaside?

I have a question though.. I love riding quads on a skinny tail like the Seaside and when I used the El Tomo Quads, I felt so much slower. I couldnt make sections I usually would make and sometimes I would just lose momentum. I tried switching to the Rob Machado Seaside quad fins and they flew, only thing was that the turns felt super tight and everything just felt really drawn out.. Is it because the seaside keel like fins are just too fat or do I need to just adjust? Or combo it somehow with the el tomo quads like you did? Any suggestions?

I bought this board largely based on this review, and I couldn't be happier. It is definitely the most pivoty quad and most high performance "fish" I've ever owned. I ride it it almost anything up to about head-and-half high, including barreling waves. I can't pretend to understand how/why everything works on Tomo boards the way they do, but it's got all the speed of a quad yet more control like a thruster. I think it has to do with something about the quad rears being noticeably closer to the center line than other quads I've owned. Also, with the board being only 5'4", it has less swing weight up front and turns on a dime. I'm a Tomo Whore now.
