We really do not know what the fruit was. But, the Garden of Eden was closed to man, and guarded by angels.

The thought of a fig tree is there and God does give Adam/Eve animal skins so they are not covered in fig leaves but the reminder that Jesus cursed the fig tree made me think.
Maybe God was not happy with them wearing the leaves of the Tree of Good and Evil.

I kind of think the fruit was a hot pepper what else burns and causes pain like a thorn on the tongue.
