Interesting fact about this game: it was one of the very first games to be broadcast in HD. Would love to see that footage if it's out there somewhere.
Wow I hadn't heard that. Interesting considering there weren't many flat screen TVs around yet. I do remember that an OSU basketball game was one of the first televised in HD and it threw me for a loop, it almost looked 3D!
Ohio State could have won at least a few national titles in the 90s. This team definitely should have. Cooper was an incredible recruiter but always seemed to lose a game that was a head scratcher.
Great game. Hard to believe how talented that '98 squad was. Coulda shoulda woulda, if only Cooper didn't let them slack off in the 2nd half of so many games, then they wouldn't have dropped the ball against MSU Watching this again, Dee Miller was such an under-appreciated WR at tOSU. Boston (deservedly) gets all the attention, but Miller made some great catches that season.
So true very talented should of won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Checkout my youtube channel show BUCKEYE VINNIE, please watch my vids and sub to my channel thanks GO BUCKEYES !!!
That was the best CFB team I have ever seen, they won all their games by 2+ scores, and even the game they somehow managed to lose they were up 24-9 in the 3Q about to get the ball back on the short side of the field for another score and routine beatdown. Still can't believe that game got away from them. Had they gotten into the title game they would have destroyed Tennessee. Coop might have even bought himself that extra year he wanted to get to 200 wins.
@@loufancelli1330 lou, that might have been the most bizarre loss in tosu history. 5 turnovers, 3 in the 2nd half directly leading to sparty points. seemed like msu had possession of the ball the entire 3rd qtr (11:00 to just 4:00 for the bucks). offense finally wakes up in the 4th, a long drive but joe montgomery gets stuffed on 4th down on the 25. we get the ball back under 2:00 left, 2 big passes put the ball on the 15, then 3 straight misses and a pick ends the game. we walked out of the shoe that night like we were leaving a funeral. incredibly talented team that had 1 bad game leading to a 4 pt loss. i think we would have beaten the vols, but i know ohio state deserved to be in that title game more than florida state, who lost to n.c. state 24-7 that season.
@@jamesmarkscott6202 I have to agree with you. That was the most bizarre loss I've ever witnessed in person, and it did feel like a funeral walking out the stadium that night.
@@loufancelli1330 More so than 2015? Another coulda woulda shoulda with talent everywhere. To think Joe Burrow, Cardale, and Dwayne were all watching from the bench as JT missed Braxton and Michael Thomas open all day, while Zeke just ate bon bons as JT ran for negative 2 yards.
Emblematic of that 98 team. Lots of boneheaded mistakes, fumbles, miscommunication and still dominated a very good WVA team on the road. All of that would come back to bite them against MSU.
I counted 3 drops on one possession... i wonder what his numbers would have looked like if he had been the full time starter in ('97) like he should have been and maybe a few less drops. He was the best drop-back QB ever at Ohio State, at least until Haskins
@Mathew Bryant when was the last time wvu played for a national title?... oh yea I forgot they are in national title contention year after year after year and then the kickoff happens and reality sets in
CBS had Big Ten/Pac-10 rights in 1985 and '86, then switched to the CFA (basically all the other major teams besides those two conferences). OSU appeared on CBS a few other times as the visiting team (the LSU game in '87). CBS lost college football rights after the 1990 season, and got them back in 1996. From 1996-2000 they had both the SEC and Big East, which is where West Virginia was at the time.
Was at this game with a fraternity brother. WVU fans were nice but very dilutional. Spoke more smack until we were up 17-3 and then they got very very quiet. I kept asking why are quitting on your team. Got no response from them.

Buckeyes and the Mountaineers need to play again in Football.
Eric Barth I agree
It wouldn't be much of a game. The Ohio State Buckeyes do not play intramural football.
Bradley Arthur Ohio State has higher rated players than WV, that’s true. I still think it would be a good game, especially in Morgantown.

Used to be commonplace. When I was a kid in the '80s pretty much all the televised OSU games were on CBS. And not every game was televised back then.
